CLT Runway 5K Run/Walk

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Charlotte Douglas International Airport Runway 5k run 10th Anniversary

The 10th annual Runway 5K Run/Walk was held on Saturday, October 29, 2016.  The event attracted more than 3,000 registered participants.  The overall winner was Mike Mitchell of Charlotte with a time of 16 minutes.  Paula Pridgen, also of Charlotte, captured the top female spot, crossing the finish line in 17:45.

The 2017 event will take place Saturday, October 28th.

Saturday, June 11 - Monday, October 17: $25

Tuesday, October 18 - Friday, October 28: $30



Awards for the Ninth Annual Runway 5K in 2015 were presented in the following categories:

Top 3 Teams
Top 3 Male/Female Baby Joggers
Top 3 Male/Female in each age group: 7 and under, 8 – 10, 11 – 14, 15 – 19, 20 – 24, 25 – 29, 30 – ​34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, 45 – 49, 50 – 54, 55 – 59, 60 – 64, 65 – 69, 70 and up.

Event Details

The Runway 5K Run is a certified run that takes place on a smooth, flat surface at one of the nation's most unique locations and busiest airports. A portion of the race course is on one of the Airport's taxiways and provides up close and exciting views of planes landing and taking off, the terminal complex and a scenic view of the Uptown Charlotte skyline. The course is wheelchair accessible and baby stroller friendly.

A variety of activities will be available for children.

Please note:  For safety reasons and because of the Run's secure location, bikes, rollerblades, inline skates, dogs and/or other pets are not allowed.

​​​​​Directions and Parking

​The starting point of the Runway 5K is at 5020 Hangar Road. Participant parking is free and available in designated areas near the event. Parking attendants and signage will be strategically positioned to assist with parking. Please refer to the Runway 5K Run event parking map for directions.


  • Leave enough time to park, walk to the race area and sign in.

  • ​For safety reasons and because of the Run's secure location, bikes, rollerblades, inline skates, dogs and/or other pets are not allowed.

Race History 

In year's past, local celebrities and athletes have participated in the event including Charlotte Bobcats Kemba Walker, former Carolina Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker and Mrs. North Carolina USA Debbie Miller. The Runway 5K has raised more than $193​,000 for LIFESPAN ​since its inception in 2007.​​​
