Noise

Since the Wright Brothers first achieved powered flight near Kitty Hawk, N.C., in December 1903, aviation has transformed how people connect, conduct business and explore the world. What began as a single 120-foot flight has grown into a global transportation system that supports communities and economies nationwide.

Each day, at approximately 5,000 public-use airports across the U.S., over 3 million passengers now board commercial flights for business trips, family vacations or new adventures.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is one of the busiest airports in the world for aircraft operations, with 1,800 daily arrivals and departures to over 190 destinations. The airport plays a vital role in the Carolinas’ economy, generating an estimated $40 billion in economic impact and supporting nearly 185,000 jobs annually.

In September 2027, CLT will commission a new fourth parallel runway (1C-19C) designed to improve safety, reduce delays and enable more efficient aircraft operations. As with all major infrastructure improvements, operational changes — like potential updates to flight paths to distribute aircraft noise more predictably — will be implemented in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and airline partners.

Aircraft noise is a reality of any busy airport, and CLT recognizes that it can impact nearby communities. CLT remains dedicated to transparent communication about overall noise levels and to minimizing noise impacts when they occur. Our commitment to being a good neighbor includes proactive communication by providing residents with relevant resources and updates through various channels.
