
Planes aren’t the only things that make their way onto CLT’s airfield. From deer to birds, to coyotes and more, keeping wildlife off the airfield is a daily job.

To help ensure Airport safety, the Airside Operations Wildlife Management Team relocates and discourages animals from seeking out the airfield. The group includes __Airport Wildlife Programs Supervisor David Castañeda__ and __wildlife coordinators Cory Davis__ and __Tayler Caudle__.

“The program is to ensure FAA compliance for wildlife hazard management,” Castañeda said. “Our responsibility is to mitigate those risks as much as possible to create a safe operating environment for aircraft.”

Recent stats show how busy they are:

- CLT had approximately 42 wildlife strikes per 100,000 aircraft movements in 2024.
- 71 different species were identified in CLT wildlife strikes in 2024. Of these species. 88% were birds, 10% bats, 1.6% terrestrial mammals and 0.4% reptiles
- The Airside Operations Wildlife Management team has worked with the United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services to trap/band for ID/relocate over 174 birds overall since 2021.

Birds are the biggest issue, but other wildlife can be problematic too. While Castañeda oversees the group, Davis and Caudle address wildlife concerns in and around CLT. Castañeda also assists them when necessary. “I look at a lot of statistics and numbers and try to just direct them in the right direction like, maybe we need to look at this or maybe we need to focus really on this species and or this problem,” Castañeda said.

He has worked in his current position for 13 years. In 2018 Davis joined him and Caudle became the newest member of the group in 2024.

“I’ve been building up this program and they’ve (Davis and Caudle) have made it really awesome,” Castañeda said. “I want to continue making it bigger and better and to contribute more to making this Airport a safer place,” Castañeda said.

A normal day for Davis and Caudle involves monitoring wildlife, addressing any concerns and responding to any immediate wildlife issues.

“I typically do a circle around the Airport a couple of times depending on the time of year because certain things change depending on the season,” Davis said. “I might also go outside the fence looking for geese, ducks, things like that in the ponds nearby. Those are the birds that are the most dangerous for airplanes because they have big mass and weigh more so they can cause more damage.”

They also pay attention to small spaces around buildings where birds and other animals make homes. The goal is to not only safely remove wildlife to avoid hazards on the airfield, but to also discourage animals from wanting to be at the Airport. Tactics the group uses include approaching animals with loud noise-making tools to scare them off, physically catching and removing animals and other options are sometimes needed.

One hard part about their work, according to Davis, is seeing the same animals continually return, which can be frustrating but looking at the data they collect regularly, the work they do is making a difference. “I said, 'I don’t think these birds are ever going away' and Castañeda pulled out the paperwork and said, 'You've been here three years — look at the numbers. See how many birds you saw this year compared to last year? You've seen only about half as many as four years ago. You are making a difference,'" Davis said.

For him, the job differs from day to day. “We’ve been out here at 3 o’clock in the morning chasing deer off the airfield before. That’s the kind of thing that fascinates me,” he said. “It gets into a routine sometimes, but an odd day pops up every now and then that you weren’t expecting.”

One of those days happened recently when Davis found himself covered in muddy, swampy water. while working to remove birds from Airport property. While doing so, his boot got stuck in thick mud, and he ended up falling into a creek.

“I didn’t see that on my calendar that day, and there I was in the creek and it’s cold,” Davis said. “You can’t predict this stuff, it just happens. I just got out of the mud and my boot stayed in the mud.” (He laughed about it and made sure to ask Castañeda for more boots after.)

Another interesting aspect of their job is the unique animals spotted near the airfield. For instance, once someone saw a peacock, but the strangest call for Davis was about a beaver.

“They said it was over at the gate by an airplane, and I was thinking there is no way, but sure enough there was a beaver,” Davis said. Along with a beaver, a woodchuck was found taking a nap on a hot day by an airplane tire a few months ago.

Caudle is the newest member of the group. While Davis works the morning shift, Caudle can be found in the late afternoon and evening. Their work is similar, but she feels Davis sees more bird activity due to the time of day he works. She usually sees more mammals in the evenings and is also heavily focused on studying the ecology aspects of what they do.

“My big thing I am really passionate about is wildlife behavior and the ecological relationships,” Caudle said. “This includes looking at what plants are attracting what animals and what animals are attracting other animals. It’s a domino effect.”

Caudle is currently in school training to become an airport biologist. She enjoys the variety and challenges of her daily duties at the Airport. 

“This job has been so frustrating but in the best way to me because it is like playing chess every single day,” Caudle said. “I am constantly trying to figure out the patterns of these animals and what they are doing next, how I make it stop and what can I do to get two steps ahead.”

Nature’s Caretakers: Wildlife Group Helps Protect Airfield


Whether it’s man’s best friend, a feline companion, or an unconventional type of pet, they all have one thing in common. When “nature calls,” traveling animals have the same needs as their human companions!

At CLT, the Airport has reimagined its indoor pet relief areas as clever pit stops decorated with custom wall graphics by CLT senior graphic designer and Charlotte native Chris O’Malley. While not exactly private stalls, they certainly feel like one.

“The concept derived from coming across a stock image of a dog reading a newspaper,” said O’Malley. “And I thought of the idea of dogs doing human things in the restroom. And what is funnier than toilet paper unwittingly sticking to the bottom of your shoe when you exit the restroom?”

__An Artful Approach__ 

O’Malley, who says he loves dogs but admits he doesn’t currently own one, has worked at Charlotte Douglas International Airport for nearly nine years. His primary duties include visually communicating Aviation Department content both internally and externally, as well as branding, presentations, environmental graphics and apparel design. A graduate of UNC Charlotte’s Art Program, O’Malley says he loves to “create” – whether it’s art, cooking, or even making cocktails. 

“The process consists of coming up with an idea, creating a composition, and then searching for stock dog images that can fit the composition,” said O’Malley. “Then I mask them out in Photoshop and use some techniques to make them fit naturally in the space, like depth perception and shadows, as examples.”

The result is a “paw-some" oversized creation, complete with artificial grass and a bright red miniature fire hydrant, guaranteed to make passengers smile when they visit with their pooch or another pet.

“I like it – these are bigger than at other airports, and at least they have a sign,” said Carly and Seth West, who popped in with their beagle, Dunn. “And the murals are fun!”

Charlotte’s Heather Turner said she did a double-take at the mural during a recent visit with her puppy, Jack. “I noticed them (through the window), and then I could see the dog. They’re very realistic.”

__Passenger Convenience__

CLT wants to meet travelers and pets where they are.

“The Pet relief areas offer customers the convenience and opportunity to keep their dog inside the facility, as many travelers do not have time available to exit and take their animal outside,” said CLT Customer Engagement Manager Lauri Golden. “Identifying a specific location for pet waste helps prevent accidents from occurring in other areas of the terminal, which can negatively impact the experience of other travelers.”

Pet Relief Gets Creative “Lift” with Graphics 

For Andrew Aiton, the journey to a career in culinary arts started at home in California, growing up in a large Scottish-Catholic family. Aiton is now Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s (CLT) Chef de Cuisine for HMSHost by Avolta, the Airport’s food and beverage concessionaire. 

“I am from a family of nine, and cooking was not a necessity but a requirement. I didn’t know what leftovers were until I moved out at 16,” joked Aiton. “I enjoyed cooking with my grandparents. We always ate dinner together as a family, and Sundays were always a big meal we would cook all day together.”

Chef Aiton is the third oldest of seven kids, and most of his siblings also work in the service industry.

__Cooking Up Star Power__

After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America and earning a business degree from Cal State University in Long Beach, Calif., Aiton served as the executive chef at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and worked in several other restaurants. Fun fact: He says the late singer and actress Whitney Houston was probably the biggest celebrity he had the pleasure of cooking for. 

“Whitney once visited the fish restaurant I worked at in Seal Beach with Bobby Brown and their dog,” recalled Aiton. “We reserved the entire upstairs for them, and guests could hear Whitney singing while enjoying our signature Caramelized Salmon. Over the years, I also met Justin Bieber, Sandra Bullock, Oscar de la Hoya and many more.”

__Joining HMSHost__

In November 2021, Aiton moved to Charlotte and joined HMSHost by Avolta at CLT, where he manages food operations, overseeing between 1,400 and 1,700 team members and more than 60 Airport restaurants—including the top-performing 1897 Market (named after the year HMSHost was founded).

“I do refreshes for multiple units throughout the year,” said Aiton. “1897 Market was different. I changed 95% of the menu based on local, fresh, home-cooking ingredients to nourish travelers and make them feel at home.”

The new menu features popular dishes like the mouthwatering “1897 Burger” – a beef patty, fried bologna, pimento cheese, onion strings, shredded lettuce, tomato and mustard. Other favorites include the “Chicken ‘In’ Waffle” and the “Pork Shank” with cheesy grits, crispy Brussels sprouts, braised pork, gravy, arugula and pickled onion.

CLT was recently named one of the ["10 Best Airports for Dining"](https://10best.usatoday.com/awards/best-airport-for-dining/ "10 Best Airports for Dining") in the *USA Today* Readers’ Choice Awards 2025; Aiton was honored but not surprised. “I never put much thought into a ranking,” said Aiton. “I know CLT HMSHost is far superior to any airport out there, and I stand by our execution.”

__Other Palate Pleasing Duties__

Developing recipes and menus is just one part of the job. Chef Aiton is also responsible for food safety, guest service, brand relationships, compliance, training and national support. He participates in numerous CLT events, such as the Runway 5K, the Charity Golf tournament, American Airlines collaborations and HMSHost Associate programs.

Aiton said his favorite dish to cook is anything he hasn't mastered, and his favorite restaurant is “every restaurant in France,” he admitted, “where local is a way of life.”

For those of us eager to become better cooks in our own humble kitchens, Chef Aiton offers this advice: “Try anything, start simple, and expand,” said Aiton. “In today’s world, you can get anything delivered, but don’t. Cook from your heart. Julia Child once said, ‘The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking, you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.’”

File it under things about CLT Airport that you probably didn’t know or may have missed:  Where is Gate C-1? 

In this edition of the CLTea blog, we spoke with the Airport’s original architect to discover the story behind the missing gate: 

__The Mystery of the Missing Gate__ 

For passengers boarding their flights on Concourse C, it only takes a quick look around at the gate numbering know something is awry. You aren’t imagining things! You won’t find Gate C-1 at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) because it no longer exists. 

No matter how hard you search, C-1 is not one of the 19 gates currently located on Concourse C. You will only find Gates C-2 through C-19. 

If you’re wondering why, it’s a bit of an architectural anomaly. 

When construction began on the new CLT Terminal in 1978, the original project included the terminal building and connectors to Concourses B and C, each featuring ten gates. Five additional gates were added on Concourse C before the terminal opened in 1982.  

However, according to Roy Johnson, the architect and former project manager for Odell Associates, Gate C-1 was removed to accommodate the construction of the terminal's Atrium addition, which opened in 1994.  

“The building (Atrium) was added to the south side of the terminal, and with the new connectors and the depth of the addition, it no longer allowed space to operate a loading bridge and a plane to and from the original C-1 gate,” said Johnson.  

So, gate C-1 was taken away.  

__Phenomenal Growth__

Since then, Johnson has closely observed the growth and development of the Airport he helped design and construct. 

“The much-increased space and more exciting finishes, such as the terrazzo floors and the art, including Queen Charlotte, were not possible in the $17 million budget in 1978,” said Johnson. “And the 3 million passengers in 1982 didn’t need the facility that the nearly 60 million passengers require today.” 

In 2024, CLT set a record, welcoming 58.8 million passengers, marking a 10- percent increase from the previous record of 53.4 million passengers set in 2023. 

CLT Airport continues to grow as part of the $4 billion Destination CLT project. In September 2025, the Airport completed its Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE), which added 175,000 square feet to the lobby and renovated 191,000 square feet of existing space. The new fourth parallel runway is under construction and is scheduled to be finished in the fall of 2027.

When you think about the Airport, it’s easy to focus on your suitcase and vacation plans, but cargo is everywhere—probably even below the passenger cabin where you’re seated. 

In 2024, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) handled 205,700 tons of cargo, a 7.3% increase from the previous year. In the first seven months of 2025, those numbers rose by 14.1%.

Air cargo supports just about everything in our daily lives. That prescription your doctor just sent over? It might have flown in overnight. The part your mechanic needs to get your car back on the road? That too. Even things like event gear, rescue animals or time-sensitive mail often arrive by air.

In this edition of __CLTea’s “Five on the Fly,” Alishia Nugent, CLT Cargo Properties Leasing Coordinator__, joined us for five questions:

__1)	Who ships the most in Charlotte?__

Amazon is currently our most active operator, handling about 60,000 tons in FY25, although FedEx was our leader for several years. Our FY25 data shows UPS and FedEx each handling between 35 and 40,000 tons.

What is being shipped is just about anything you can imagine! When you track a package from Amazon, UPS, or FedEx and see that it arrived in Charlotte overnight, chances are it touched down right here on our cargo ramp.

*Note: American Airlines' biggest cargo customer is the United States Postal Service.*

__2) What is the longest distance our cargo travels to CLT?__

Our dedicated cargo flights usually stick to shorter, high-frequency routes. For example, Amazon runs six flights daily—three inbound and three outbound—connecting CLT with Cincinnati (CVG), Wilmington, OH (ILN) and San Bernardino, CA (SBD). Of those, San Bernardino is the farthest, but even that’s under five hours of flight time.

That said, most people don’t realize how much cargo is carried in the belly of passenger flights. In 2024, American Airlines transported 21 thousand tons (42 million pounds!). Anything from high-value packages and mail to medicine and even family pets can be riding in the belly of a mainline aircraft. Regional jets usually don’t have room for that kind of freight, but our mainline flights do.

For a long time, Munich was our longest nonstop route, at about 4,590 miles. American Airlines launched the seasonal Athens route (June 2025), which added about 1,000 more miles, making it our longest haul. But next year (May 2026), we will surpass that with Etihad’s new nonstop to Abu Dhabi. That flight will cover over 7,400 miles and significantly expand CLT’s global reach. It will be exciting to see the changes that come with this.

__3)	Can you explain how cargo fits into the larger picture of CLT’s success?__

Cargo tends to be the much quieter and less glorified partner to passenger service, but it’s just as important. It helps ensure airline profitability, especially on long-haul routes, and helps keep Charlotte connected to major logistics and distribution networks.

Amazon alone operates over 40 flights a week through CLT, quietly making it one of our top-performing carriers, even without a single passenger onboard. While cargo might not be as exciting as terminal expansions or the latest restaurant to open, it offers a lot of potential, especially considering how the Airport can stay resilient and diversified in the long run. We saw the important role of cargo during the pandemic; passenger traffic dropped off, but cargo kept moving.

We’re also well-positioned geographically to expand, especially with inbound goods from South America. Think tropical fruit, fresh flowers, produce and pharmaceuticals — this kind of freight needs to move quickly, and CLT is in a prime spot to serve as a gateway for it.

__4)	Discuss how our love of convenient, online shopping impacts CLT.__

E-commerce is BOOMING and only continuing to grow! People have become very reliant on their next-day or even same-day shipping now, and companies like Amazon Air are the ones making that happen. CLT plays a big role in their network, which means we’re helping ensure those deliveries arrive on time, not just across the country but right here in Charlotte to you and me. 

And it’s not just Amazon. Retailers like Shein, Temu, and others are part of this extensive global logistics ecosystem that’s growing so rapidly. The more prepared we are to handle that growth, the more competitive we will be as a destination for these operators.

__5)	Are there any new technologies on the horizon you are excited about?__

We haven’t rolled out much new cargo-specific tech here at CLT yet, but I watch it closely. Other airports are testing some exciting things, like autonomous ground service equipment, which is basically self-driving tugs that move freight around the ramp.

One of the innovations I’m most excited about is the scanning technology now used in some warehouses. Instead of having to manually flip every box to find a barcode, these systems can scan any side of a parcel automatically. That kind of efficiency is a game-changer when you’re moving thousands of packages an hour and can enable a much larger throughput within the same amount of space.

Freight in Flight: How Air Cargo at CLT Delivers Essentials

In Aviation City at the Sullenberger Aviation Museum (SAM), history doesn’t just sit behind glass — it soars overhead, surrounds you on all sides, immersing visitors into Charlotte’s captivating aviation history.

Visitors encounter firsthand an authentic 1930s letter from Charlotte’s first Airmail stop, get a close-up view of historic planes towering overhead and even explore vintage menus, Morris Code magazines (the on-base publication from CLT’s time as an Army Air Base during World War II) and other fun items from throughout aviation history. 

“Aviation City is all about the City of Charlotte, the Airport and how they have grown together since the 1930s. It’s a chronological story that really focuses on the beginnings of the Charlotte Airport and follows it through time. It highlights the expansion and the growth of over 100 years of progress, but it’s not only about where we have been but where we are going,” said Vice President of Collections Katie Swaringen of SAM.

The exhibit, which opened this summer, is free with general admission and planned to be a permanent fixture. Current features include a real-time flight tracker for CLT’s airspace, two flight simulators located in a real World War II-era jet trainer, a historic Piedmont Airlines DC-3 plane with connections to CLT and much more.

When entering the exhibit, an arrow on the floor directs you where to start your journey. As you move around, it’s like walking through a history book, but instead of static words and pictures, immersive visuals and hands-on displays transport you to another place and reveal the stories and people behind each piece. 

The lighting in the exhibit shines down on different sections, making you focus particularly on what’s right in front of you before progressing to the next station. One section is devoted entirely to the early days of aviation, delving into Charlotte’s many golden age barnstormers, while another highlights key moments of the Airport’s evolution, such as the deregulation of the airline industry and Piedmont Airlines’ rise to prominence at CLT. There is also a dedicated display honoring the history of the North Carolina Air National Guard. 

__A long time in the making__

Aviation City is the result of years and years of planning and dedication. CLT had a team dedicated to restoring the 89-year-old historic hangar, which once housed Eastern Air Lines aircraft and now serves as a home for the exhibit. SAM staff has been working since 2019 to plan what the exhibit would look like  and make it a reality.

“In March we started moving all of the aircraft over to the hangar. It’s really all the planning that goes on before that is time consuming. Once you get to the exhibit install piece, it goes quickly,” Swaringen said.

Opening weekend, the museum saw around 1,000 visitors of all ages tour Aviation City. In addition to being among the first to explore the exhibit, visitors also were treated to discussions with people connected to Charlotte’s aviation history.  Special guest speakers are planned to continue. Be sure to check the museum’s calendar for updates of who may be stopping by soon.

“I encourage people to come out and make Aviation City one of their destinations for this summer,” Swaringen said. “It’s an interactive, fun experience. It’s really an exhibit about the Charlotte community.”

__Fun facts: Did you know?__

- Air Mail, which predated the modern mail services, arrived in Charlotte for the first time on April 1, 1930.
- Eastern Air Lines was the first airline to offer passenger service in Charlotte, beginning in 1930.
- From 1941 to 1946, CLT (then known as Douglas Municipal Airport) was a World War II Army Air Base named Morris Field used to train pilots, gunners and maintenance crews.
- The Airport’s original hangar was moved from its original location in 2010 to make room for expanded taxiways. A steel beam from the original hangar is on display in Aviation City.
- Before computers, teletypewriters were used to communicate messages in the aviation industry. You can find an example of one of these used by the North Carolina Air National Guard in Aviation City.

Soaring Through Time: Aviation City Journeys into Charlotte’s Airborne Past

The popular saying, "Cash is King,” may seem outdated, but it still applies to traveling overseas.

Yes, even in the age of credit cards, debit cards, mobile payments and digital wallets, carrying some foreign currency in your pocket is beneficial when visiting another country. 

Just ask Susan Druckman, the CEO of SDI, which operates the Currency Exchange at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) under the brand CXI-Currency Exchange International. CLT Airport has two locations: one in Concourse D and another in the Atrium, which has been updated with a fresh look and feel.

“Not every destination has widespread card acceptance – especially in rural areas, small towns, or local markets and transportation hubs,” said Druckman. “Also, having local currency ensures travelers can cover essentials like taxis, tips, food or other small purchases without hassle. Additionally, many markets and souvenir shops prefer local currency.”

__Overseas Cash Spending__

Recent tourism statistics from The Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT) indicate that travelers generally use cash for 10-20% of their total spending outside the United States, which amounts to $300-$600 per trip. 

CXI offers more than 80 currencies, covering over 100 countries. The most popular are the European euro (EUR), the British pound (GBP), the Japanese yen (JPY), the Canadian dollar (CAD), and the Mexican peso (MXN). 

“Cash can be a backup in emergencies or when technology fails—whether it’s a card being declined, a lost wallet, or an unreliable ATM network,” added Druckman. “It gives travelers peace of mind and flexibility. Exchanging currency before departure often means better rates and fewer fees than withdrawing cash abroad, relying solely on cards, and/or being exposed to fraud or scams.”

Chicagoan Leah Simonds recently passed through Charlotte en route to Madrid and stopped at CXI to exchange dollars for euros. “I know there are some power outages in Spain right now,” Simonds said. “And I wanted to get some physical cash just in case.”

__Two CLT Airport Locations__

Claudia Parisi manages CXI’s two locations at CLT Airport. The company employs nine staff members who speak several languages, including Spanish, Serbian, Hindi, and English Creole, also known as “Triny”—a dialect spoken in Trinidad and Tobago—and they often act as unofficial CLT ambassadors.

“We are not just the currency exchange but the go-to for everything— flight information, food information, security, lost and found, translations—you name it, we have done it,” admits Parisi. “In essence, we are part of the CLT community with the same mission to help every single passenger irrespective of whether they are using our services or not, while delivering the same level of excellent customer service.”

Flight crews and pilots are regular clients, although most customers are leisure travelers. No reservations are required; anyone can easily walk up to exchange foreign currency. 

Currency Exchange International at CLT Airport is open seven days a week, 365 days a year, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at both terminal locations.

Currency Exchange at CLT Airport Debuts New Look

This year marks the 20th anniversary of CLT’s Volunteer Program – a milestone made possible by the incredible humans in blue vests who greet and guide travelers every day. A lot has changed at the Airport over the past two decades, but one thing remains the same: the dedication of our volunteers.

They’ve seen it all – construction detours, traveler upgrades and even celebrity sightings (sort of). Meet an original trio of volunteers – Liz S., George F. and Sandy B. – as they share their stories, memories and why they still love showing up in those iconic vests.

__So, what’s changed?__

> __Sandy B.__
“There is so much construction. We have to pay attention to what’s going on at all times because a couple of times they move the exit and we have to think, ‘how do we leave?’ There’s a lot of changes. You just have to pay attention so that you will be helpful to travelers and yourself too.”

> __George F.__
“Travelers have changed. “When I started, they didn’t have the electronic devices that they have today. The Airport is also changing tremendously. The departure and arrival boards are now more prevalent, and there have been many, many, major improvements with the recent Terminal Lobby Expansion.”

“We have more clubs now. It used to be just the Admirals Club. The Airport is also getting larger.”

__Why did you join the Volunteer Program, and what made you stay 20 years?__

> __Sandy B.__
“Probably because I love to travel, and I was looking into doing more. I had done some other volunteer work and that sounded interesting so when I saw that they were looking for people, I called.”

> “You never know what the day will bring. You know, it could be very boring, or it could be very interesting. It’s always a positive experience. The people we meet are mostly happy to be traveling and friendly.”

“My background is in the railroad. When I retired, I volunteered at Amtrak for five years and rode the trains. I grew tired of the trains often not running on schedule when coming back to Charlotte, and I saw an ad in the Charlotte Observer about the Airport Volunteer Program. So, I went out to interview, did the training and I have been there ever since.”

> “What has kept me at the Airport all that time? Just being around people who I’m not normally around. I have a nature of helping people, and all you have to do is stand at your location in the Airport and people will ask you questions. You give them the answers, and sometimes they just want to stay and chat.”

“What got me into it? I am a retired schoolteacher, but I was still teaching at the time. I got back from Spain one year and it was so, so hot here. I was like, ‘what was I going to do, this heat is just unbearable.’ I was opening up bills, and when I opened up a water bill, I saw an advertisement for the Volunteer Program. I taught Spanish and since I like to travel and I speak Spanish, I thought that it might be helpful. So, I went and did the training and the orientation and liked it. I also thought, why not because I would be walking around in the Airport getting a little bit of exercise, and it was air conditioned.”

> “What kept me there? I just really enjoyed it. The program was started initially I think to try to be a face for Charlotte and the area for southern hospitality and just to be nice and helpful to passengers. It was fun. I got to meet other volunteers, and I was able to use my Spanish language skills.”

__What are some fun Airport moments or memories you have from volunteering the last 20 years?__
> __Sandy B.__
“I remember the only time I really had an upset person. This man was very upset, and I asked where he was from. It turns out that he was from the same area in Pennsylvania where my mother-in-law lived. I found out his daughter went out to smoke a cigarette, and he was angry she wouldn’t get back in time to make the flight. Just talking with him calmed him down and by the time his daughter appeared, everything was fine. It was satisfying to know that this man who was so frustrated and angry was now calm and comfortable.”

“It was probably 15 years ago. I had served in the Air Force many years before and had been stationed in Canada. While there, we lived near this couple who was from Slovenia. The husband worked in a nearby coal mine. We became close, but lost touch over the years. While I was in the Airport one day, this person came up to me and asked about finding a currency exchange to convert Canadian money. I told her where to find it, and I mentioned I had lived in Canada and told her the town we lived near. The woman said she lived close to the area, so I mentioned the couple from Slovenia I knew there. She said she knew them, that she was also Slovenian and had immigrated there with Julia, which was the name of the wife in the couple. She then named the couple’s children, so I knew we were talking about the same people. It was unbelievable that she knew them too, and she happened to just come up to me at the Airport all those years later.”

“None in particular stand out, but a lot of times on Sundays you can tell if there is a Panthers’ game or some other sporting event in town because you see people, and they’re all sporting their T-shirts for particular teams.”

__Have you seen any celebrities while working in the Airport?__

> __Sandy B.__
“No, not really. A few years ago, we used to see Steve Smith a lot from the Panthers. Other than that no.”

> __George F.__
“The only one that really stood out was Bill Cosby’s wife on the Cosby show (Phylicia Rashad, aka Clair Huxtable). I got to meet her. I’ve also seen a few local politicians.”

> __Liz S.__
“If I had, I wouldn’t have known. There’s a lot of people who I see who I thought looked familiar, but I wouldn’t go up to them. But having taught at Charlotte Country Day, I often run into parents of some of my students, and I’ve seen some of my actual students traveling through over the years. So, that’s fun.”

__What are some common and unusual questions people have asked you?__

> __Sandy B.__ 
“’Where’s my gate?’ is a common one. Most of the time it is not on the ticket, and it depends on how far ahead they are of their departure time because it may not be on the boards either. The most unusual was when someone told me they had to find their gate because they couldn’t eat without doing so. I was like, OK?... but I think most people can figure out how to eat somewhere.

“Well, I tell you what, times have changed and there are different vendors in the Airport, and they are constantly changing and probably the number one question is where a particular food vendor is. I also get asked where to find the different Airport clubs.”

“They want to know where they can go smoke. They want to know food options. Especially a lot of our international travelers want to know if they have to go pick up their suitcase in order to check-in for their next flight.”

Still Walking the Walk: 20 Years of Volunteering at CLT

You’ve probably heard local news media, reporters and meteorologists refer to “precipitation measured at Charlotte Douglas International Airport” (CLT), but have you ever wondered exactly how and where it’s measured on the airfield? It’s critical to any weather event or forecast that might impact CLT, its airline partners and passengers.

As part of our new “CLTea” blog, we are introducing a feature called “Five on the Fly," where we ask five questions about Airport-related topics and interview people who we think you will find interesting. 

Our first guest is National Weather Service (NWS) Meteorologist and Observing Program Leader Christopher Horne:

__Why is an official weather measurement done at CLT Airport?__

We consider weather elements measured at CLT Airport 'official,' meaning that they originate from a trusted government source. Prior to the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) commissioning in the mid-1990s, CLT had a National Weather Service (NWS) office on Morris Field Drive. NWS employees there took manual weather observations every hour. 

The ASOS at CLT is owned and maintained by the NWS here at Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP) in Greer, S.C. (The Greenville-Spartanburg Weather and Forecast Area extends into parts of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.)

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) also maintain a dense network of automated rain gauges throughout the county called [FINS](https://finslive.mecklenburgcountync.gov/period/rain/P1D).   

__Where exactly is the ASOS measuring precipitation at CLT?__

The ASOS Sensor Pad is located between Runways 36L and 36C near the Sierra Taxiway across from CLT Fire Station 41. 

The ASOS rain gauge at CLT is a ‘weighing-type’ rain gauge (called an AWPAG or All Weather Precipitation Accumulation Gauge), meaning that rain, melted snow and ice collect in a type of ‘bucket.’ The liquid's weight is converted to inches with a resolution to the nearest one-hundredth of an inch. That data is transmitted via fiber optic cable in different forms to different users.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contracts weather observers, whose office is at the base of the new control tower, to augment and back up the ASOS when necessary. They can do this using a manually read standard rain gauge. 

The ASOS has a ‘present weather’ sensor that can automatically detect when rain or snow is falling and even assign an intensity to the precipitation. However, the system is not smart enough to tell if sleet or hail is occurring, but the FAA contractors can augment the present weather sensor output to assign the proper type of precipitation. 

Since the ASOS cannot measure the amount of snow that has accumulated on the ground, the weather observers there also keep track of the accumulation.

The rain and snow data from CLT is monitored, collected, and quality-controlled here at the NWS office, and then officially archived in the climate data of the United States by folks at the [National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/) in Asheville.  

__How often are measurements taken?__

Precipitation accumulation is constantly monitored/tabulated, and amounts are transmitted externally every five minutes. Common precipitation accumulation intervals are also transmitted hourly with a one-hour total, every three hours with a three-hour total, every six hours with a six-hour total and daily amounts. 

Here at the GSP NWS office, we currently have 16 meteorologists on staff. Eleven are forecasters who provide routine 24/7 coverage, and the additional five program leaders and management who are forecaster-qualified, fill in shifts when needed and supplement the forecast staff during active weather events.

NWS electronic technicians are responsible for routine maintenance and repairs on the All-Weather Precipitation Accumulation Gauge and all the other sensors on the ASOS pad at CLT.

__What else is measured?__

The ASOS Sensor Pad contains a 10m wind tower, on top of which is a sonic wind sensor that constantly measures wind speed and direction. Also on the pad are temperature and dewpoint sensors, a laser beam ceilometer, a visibility sensor and a freezing rain sensor. The ASOS barometric pressure sensors are in a separate location at CLT Airport.

__Why is this data so important to CLT and Charlotte?__

Like other official automated gauges across the region, rainfall data from the CLT Airport gauge are monitored for rainfall amounts and, most importantly, rainfall rates. 

One of the NWS's paramount responsibilities is issuing flood and flash flood warnings. Data from the CLT Airport gauge is used to monitor potential flooding on Airport property and along the various creeks/drainage basins flowing through adjacent areas of the City of Charlotte leading to the Catawba River.

Weather data from the CLT ASOS is used locally by FAA personnel in the tower, Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) and at the Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). Commercial and general aviation interests use the data for safe flight operations. Local media outlets also use and display the data.

We had the opportunity to connect with Jennifer Price, Project Director with HMS Host, to explore how this captivating restaurant concept came to fruition.

“The original inspiration behind Crown Diner is derived from classic mid-century ‘diner’ symbolism with applied overtones of fun, bold, and vibrant color and details,” Price explained. “The restaurant provides an inviting all-day diner experience for every traveler—whether you’re a solo traveler who wants to catch a few minutes of a big game, a family passing time before a flight or a business traveler who needs a quiet place to answer emails.”

When it comes to the menu, The Crown Diner elevates the traditional diner experience to new heights. “My favorite items that I have had the privilege of tasting are the BBQ shrimp and grits and the fried-green tomatoes. There is not a concept like this in the Airport, and CLT aviation staff were more than excited to give us the chance to bring this to life in the new area of the concourse,” Price shared.

Price and the HMS Host team are thrilled to see The Crown Diner come to life for travelers. As they reflect on the restaurant's grand opening, Price noted, “We are happy to see travelers truly enjoying this location and the food. Every project is a labor of love, so it is always exciting to see travelers sitting in the space we created for them, eating food from a menu we designed for them, talking and laughing with each other or using the space to catch up on work.”

July 25, 2024 – In today’s Window Seat blog, we are launching a new behind-the-scenes series showcasing the incredible people, places, programs and amenities that set our airport apart and enhance the travel experience for customers.

In coming months, we will share more insights and first-hand experiences that highlight the dedication of our employees and the exceptional services and amenities we offer.

First up – It’s summer and that means the interns have landed at the Airport.

This summer, 11 undergraduate and graduate students from colleges near and far have joined the Aviation Department, operator of Charlotte Douglas International Airport, for 12 weeks of on-the-job experiences unlike any other workplace.

Internships are a crucial step in building a successful career and providing practical experience and exposure to the professional world. Interning at an airport, a bustling hub of activity with a wide range of operations, is a unique opportunity that offers a blend of hands-on experience, skill development and professional networking. It prepares interns for the complexities of the working world while providing a comprehensive understanding of airport operations and the essential relationships with local, state and federal business partners.

Internships can also lead to full-time employment and long careers. (Just ask our CEO Haley Gentry!) We talked to five other Aviation Department employees whose careers at CLT began when they became interns:

Q: Why did you want to transition from an Aviation Department intern to full-time employee in the department?

Sophie Runyon, intern Airside Operations 2022; hired 2022.

A: “In my last six months of college before I graduated, I was looking for a full-time job and was able to secure an internship in Airside Operations for the summer. After my time in airside, working along the airside training department, I discovered I enjoyed the fast-paced environment and the importance behind the position. I decided that CLT would be a great place to start and grow my career.”

Q: What did you take away from your internship that has helped guide you in your Aviation job in the beginning or now?

Jordan Duke, intern 2018; hired 2019.

A: “The biggest thing that I learned from my internship is to take advantage of every opportunity. I tell current interns that you should treat the summer as a three-month interview. You never know what the opportunity could lead to. Network as much as possible.”

Q: Why did you want to transition from an intern to full-time employee?

Jennifer Long, public affairs intern 2001; hired 2001.

A: “I’m from Charlotte and grew up near the Airport. I started working at the Airport in 1995 as a teenager at The Body Shop. I worked there part-time through high school and part-time in college. The Airport seemed like a natural fit for an internship. I enjoyed my internship so much, plus it was during the events of 9/11. I was asked if I had interest with staying on full-time, and I was like ‘absolutely!’ and 23 years later I’m still here.”

Q: How has your internship benefitted you during your time on the job?

Cameron Simpson, Organizational & Talent Development intern 2022; hired 2023.

A: “My internship experience has benefitted me with growth. I’m not the same person I was two years ago nor am I the same person I was a year ago. A lot of this stems from work. Work is a different scenery than college; it’s truly an introduction to the real world and life down the line. It starts small and almost goes unnoticed. But you slowly see the changes in your verbiage, thought process, and your everyday routine.”

Q: Why did you want to transition from an Aviation Department intern to full-time employee in the department?

Elizabeth Erhartic, Human Resources intern 2016; hired 2018.

A: “Discovering the internship opportunities at CLT was a happy accident. I had wanted to work in the hospitality industry somehow, as a travel-lover, but I didn’t realize there were careers at the Airport aside from the jobs you see in the terminal. Once I stepped into the CLT Center offices, I knew this was the industry for me. The sounds of the aircraft excited me. Going to the terminal and getting to experience second-hand travel excitement was energizing. I remember my first meeting with airline representatives and how excited and nervous I was for it … I was passionate about the industry, felt good about what I could contribute, and felt that I could have a supported career here. I couldn’t have orchestrated my career path better. Throughout undergrad, I struggled to put my finger on what I really wanted to do. Coming here, everything made sense, including why the technical writing internship in Washington, D.C., I had declined about a month earlier with no backup plan seemed like the right thing to do.

Lastly, we saved the best – and most crucial – question for last: What advice they would you give someone considering an internship and potential career opportunities at the Airport?

Erhartic: “I always like to tell the interns I meet that I started as an intern too, and there are great opportunities if they can show up and prove themselves. For anyone looking for a career more dynamic than your typical 9-5, they’ll find it here.”

Runyon: “My advice for someone considering an internship with the Aviation Department is if you are looking for a full-time position after, make sure you are connecting with the correct people, and make sure to show up daily and do more of what is asked of you. Ambition, involvement and initiative are things that will make you stand out to the right people.”

Simpson: “Take it seriously. It might sound cliché, but it’s not; you never know what an opportunity can turn into. A prime example is our Director Haley Gentry. She started as an intern and now she’s the director of one of the busiest airports in the world. This shows how a little opportunity can change your life and start a fruitful career. She’s also a huge advocate for the internship program and growing young people's careers. It’s encouraging to see as a young professional that the head honcho is rooting for you, sharing words of wisdom and encouragement to keep you pushing yourself and better yourself.”

Boundless Opportunities in Exciting World of Airport Employment

April 5, 2024 - For a few sweet hours on April 1, the CLT Canine Crew had an honorary equine member: Kiwi the miniature horse. Many people on social media thought we were horsing around since it was April Fool’s Day, but little Kiwi did in fact trot through the CLT terminal.

Travelers did double-takes as they walked by Kiwi. They stared in disbelief, then inevitably pulled out their phones to snap a photo.

Kiwi stands just 25” tall, about the same height as a golden retriever. But wearing purple shoes and a bedazzled vest, he stood out as the “mane” man at CLT.

Pianist Michael Colson provided the mood music, playing “Horse with No Name,” “Wild Horses” and “Old Town Road” during Kiwi’s visit to the Atrium.

The April Fool’s joke was that Kiwi was becoming a permanent member of the CLT Canine Crew. Unfortunately, Kiwi and his human handlers at Stampede of Love are busy helping children and adults of all abilities through animal-assisted therapy.

CLT Social Media Manager Virginia Lane came up with the idea as a way to continue the Airport’s April Fool’s day tradition while giving travelers an unexpected treat.

Previous pranks include announcing that Airport construction was complete and that CLT was removing the beloved rocking chairs. We can’t imagine either of those things ever happening.

Horsing Around at CLT

Feb. 27, 2024 – In the world and business of travel, the CLT Aviation Academy stands out as a source of inspiration for community members looking to understand Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s importance in the Queen City.

The CLT Aviation Academy is an annual program that provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity to better understand the Airport’s inner workings and its contributions to our economy, transportation system and community. Aviation Academy participants gain behind-the-scenes access to current operations and future CLT planning efforts.

The first day participants receive an intense introduction to CLT, and over the course of the next nine weeks they experience life in the terminal, see first-hand the Airport construction through the Destination CLT infrastructure improvement program, meet the Airport’s leadership and its business partners and learn how safety and security of CLT’s 20,000-plus workers and 53.4 million passengers (an annual record as of 2023) is a top priority.

The key strength of the Aviation Academy is in the success of its graduates, who in exchange for the very cool experience they receive go on to be advocates for the Airport in their communities and workplaces. We want them to share the Airport’s story. Some go further seeking to be involved in the community in bigger ways.

Nakia Savage of Charlotte had completed the City of Charlotte’s Civic Leadership Academy when she learned about the Aviation Academy. Living close to the Airport, she often wondered what was happening here. She signed up and went on to graduate in 2022, but she did not stop there.

Savage joined the Airport Community Roundtable (ACR), a broad-based community group that provides feedback to Airport leadership. She cites the knowledge she gained with the Aviation Academy for inspiring her desire to continue learning more about the Airport. She still serves on the ACR. Listen as she shares her story in this video on our website.

Victoria Watlington participated in Aviation Academy in 2018. She later set her sights on Charlotte City Council where she was first elected to the district that encompasses the Airport. She currently serves as an at-large representative. As a council member, she continues her community advocacy as a champion of workforce and business development, economic mobility, responsible growth and infrastructure and community engagement.

Not everyone who participates in the Aviation Academy goes on to hold office or join committees. Some have become volunteers at Airport-sponsored events like the CLT Runway 5K or the Airport triennial disaster drill. There are even people who have joined the ranks of Airport Volunteers. This year, a chaplain and volunteer from the USO Charlotte Airport Center are enrolled to learn more about the Airport.

No matter what they go on to do, all the Aviation Academy graduates walk away with having had a unique experience and with a greater understanding and appreciation for CLT and its impact as an employer and economic driver in the region and state.

So far, 137 people have joined the alumni ranks of the Aviation Academy. The class of 2024, which graduates March is meeting now, is the largest group in the Academy’s history – 36 people will graduate in March 21. And who knows where this unique experience will take them or if it will inspire them to soar to new heights as community leaders and Airport advocates.  

With its commitment to empowering advocacy among community leaders and members, the possibilities for Aviation Academy graduates are boundless.

Nurturing Advocacy at the CLT Aviation Academy

Feb. 21, 2024 –The morning was going well, for a Monday. A passenger scored a hard-to-find rocking chair in the Atrium and was swaying as he passed the time. That’s when his cellphone slipped out of his pocket and fell at just the right angle to drop through the grate surrounding a tree. 

One by one, CLT workers arrived to try to retrieve the phone. The first two workers had no luck. The next two men took the grate apart and dug around with various tools, but they still couldn’t reach the phone. 

Enter Jennifer Salvatore and Tessa Crull of Terminal Operations. Crull borrowed a broom from a nearby restaurant and Salvatore climbed into the plant base. She used the broom to clear away the leaves and other debris, but it was too dark to see anything. That’s when two officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department offered their flashlights. 

Crull held a flashlight. The passenger pinged his cell from another phone. Salvatore dug around with the broom until she finally spotted the device. But it wasn’t in a case, and it was laying flat. The crew had to shift the base of the tree so Salvatore could flip the phone on its side. She then used a grabber stick to retrieve the phone.

When she handed the phone to the passenger, he screeched in delight. He told her it was so comforting seeing CLT workers go above and beyond to help him: “You guys are the best!” he said.

Going Above, Beyond and Below to Help a Traveler

Dec. 22, 2023 – During two days in December, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is full of young men and women in Army camouflage. Buses full of recruits from Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., arrive every half hour. It’s part of the annual Victory Block Leave, when about 4,500 trainees go home for the holidays.

Many of these new soldiers are teenagers and Basic Training was their first time leaving home. They’ve been in the hands of a drill sergeant for the past few months, and they are looking forward to being back in the arms of their loved ones.

Supporting the soldiers during Victory Block Leave is a team effort. CLT, the Airport USO, HMSHost, Paradies Lagardère and the airlines join together to make sure the trainees are well fed and comfortable while they wait for their flights. USO volunteers are out in force assisting however they can. Some of the soldiers need help getting to their gates. A lot of them just want pictures taken with their friends.

There are plenty of cookies, chips and candy for them to enjoy without worrying if their drill sergeant is watching. Charlotte USO Center Manager Julie Milani makes sure about that. She knows what their food intake has been during training, and the USO provides them with the things they haven’t been allowed to eat for a while. They can come back for seconds and thirds if they want.

After getting something to eat, you’ll find the soldiers relaxing, listening to music, swaying on rocking chairs and scrolling through their phones. We asked some of them what they are most looking forward to during their time off.

- Pvt. Janean Carr says she is eager to spend time with her family in Chicago, decorate the house, fill stockings and bake cookies. “I can’t wait to eat cookies without getting in trouble.”
- Pvt. Makenna Duy says she can’t wait to eat her dad’s famous mashed potatoes and spend time with her siblings in Tennessee. “They haven’t seen me in a long time and I’m sure they miss me because I’m the big sister.”
- Pvt. Dean Hawkins is anticipating seeing his younger brother when he gets home to Eagle River, Alaska. They have both been training at Fort Jackson but haven’t seen each other since leaving home. “Thanksgiving we were actually in the same dining hall, but we didn’t know it because there were so many people there.”
- Pvt. Trey Stancil says chilling out and relaxing are on the top of his to-do list when he gets to Orlando. “I just want to sit in a room by myself. I’ve had to sleep with 64 people in the room.”

The Army pauses training for Victory Block Leave so the soon-to-be soldiers and their trainers can reflect on what they’ve accomplished, enjoy time with their loved ones and come back energized. Look for them to come back through CLT in early January as everyone makes their way back to Fort Jackson.

Getting Soldiers Home for the Holidays

Dec. 15, 2023 – It hasn’t snowed in Charlotte since January 2022, but crews at Charlotte Douglas International Airport are ready for it.  “We’re never going to be caught off guard with winter weather,” said Jeff Perry, director of operations for regulatory compliance at CLT. “We’re always prepared.”

Making sure CLT is ready for whatever comes our way is a massive team effort. Similar to the way the Airport prepares for hurricanes and thunderstorms, our team is in contact with the National Weather Service (NWS) and makes plans based on their forecasts. “With a couple of days’ notice we can put all the pieces together,” said Mike Tobin, emergency operations manager for CLT.

Keeping the Runways Clear

“The challenge we have in Charlotte is we always seem to be on that cusp of 32 degrees,” Perry said. Winter weather here can quickly change from rain to frozen precipitation and back again. “We have to be strategic with how and when we treat the runways and taxiways. If we treat the surface too early, it could wash away, and it’s not going to be effective.”

The Airport uses a special solution that is safe for planes and the environment. It forms a barrier on the pavement that lowers the temperature at which ice would form to around minus 60 degrees. The Airside Operations crew conducts hourly inspections using a device that measures how well brakes work on the runway’s current conditions. Based on the results, the crew will either retreat the surface or move on to the next runway.

CLT has numerous trucks equipped to handle just about anything. These multifunction trucks have blades, brooms and blowers.  

Well before the temperature drops to anywhere near freezing, the maintenance crew starts running drills. “We’re not like northern airports that get snow regularly,” Perry said. “We don’t want to get rusty, so we are constantly practicing those skills.” If you see heavy equipment on the airfield, it doesn’t always mean snow is in the forecast, it may just be a practice run.

What if it Snows?

Although it doesn’t happen in Charlotte very often, planes can take off and land while it’s snowing as long as the runways are clear and dry. “Once you get in a rhythm during a snow event and you have a good flow, you can effectively keep two runways open,” Perry said. Two out of three runways might not be able to accommodate a full slate of flights, but Perry says the airlines are very proactive. “If they think we’re going to have a snow or an ice event here, they’ll make adjustments. They’ll divert. They’ll do what they need to do get people and equipment out of harm’s way.”

People often ask if the Airport has a massive fleet of snowplows like other large hubs. Perry says that wouldn’t be necessary considering Charlotte’s climate. CLT has various types of snow equipment for different uses. The Airport also contracts with several construction companies that can add snow removal equipment to the front of their big trucks and come help us out.

Ice is Another Story

Planes can’t take off on an icy runway and ice is harder than snow to remove once it has accumulated. You can’t use a plow truck on ice. That’s why CLT crews work so hard to prevent ice from forming in the first place.

Deicing Planes

There is an actual deicing season in aviation. It runs from October to April. During those months, deicing is done frequently. Think of it like defrosting your car before driving to work; overnight moisture gets in the air and freezes on the windshield. In 2022, which was a mild winter, 887 planes were deiced. CLT has 41 deice trucks, which, in the current configuration, are spread out on the airfield to treat planes. For the 2024/2025 season, a new, centralized deicing pad will open. “Treating the airplanes in one location is more efficient because once deicing is complete, the aircraft doesn’t have to take a long taxi route,” Perry said. “It can go right out to the runway.”

Storm Ready Airport

CLT is a certified Storm Ready Airport with the weather service. That means we have all the appropriate plans, procedures and communications in place. Only 31 airports with commercial flights are certified, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is the only other North Carolina airport on the list. “We’ve been in this program for several years,” Tobin said. “It’s another level of assurance in the emergency management world that we’ve gone through the appropriate process and procedures and are ready for severe weather.”

“The Airport never closes,” said Tobin. “There may not be flights coming in and out on all runways, but the doors are always open.”

Preparing for Winter Weather a Team Effort

Sept. 29, 2023 – At Charlotte Douglas International Airport we always have our eyes on the skies. Beyond takeoffs and landings, we are constantly keeping an eye on the weather forecast. Making sure the Airport is ready for whatever comes our way is a massive team effort.

Overseeing the team effort is Michael Tobin, emergency operations manager for CLT. We asked him to give us a peek inside how one of the world’s busiest airports prepares for the possibility of severe weather.

What types of weather systems do you track?

“Anything that could be a potential threat to CLT. It doesn’t have to be a hurricane to have a major impact on Airport operations. Typical summer thunderstorms can force airlines to cancel or delay flights, which can wreak havoc on CLT operations.”

Where do you get your weather information?

“The National Weather Service is my go-to source for any, and all, weather-related information. I’m on many email chains with them and they are very good at pushing out information as early as possible on potential weather threats. I also follow numerous weather experts on social media to get their perspectives.

“I take the National Weather Service data, analyze it, and try to put it in layman’s terms. Then, I funnel that knowledge to our staff and key stakeholders to let them know whether there could be a threat to CLT.”

Who are those stakeholders?

“At CLT, it’s basically anyone who has boots on the ground to keep the Airport operating. That includes security operations, airside operations that work with the FAA to keep planes moving, terminal operations that manage the customer experience from the curb to the jet bridge, as well as our landside operations that manage parking, ground transportation and busing.

“Beyond our teams, we also share information with our airline partners, as well as the businesses and restaurants that operate at CLT.”

When do you start actively planning for a severe weather event?

“When the possibility of severe weather turns into a probability, Airport Emergency Management along with Airside Operations and the Airport Operations Center (AOC) actively monitor the weather conditions and prepare as appropriate. For most severe weather events (snow, ice tornado threat, etc.) Emergency Management and the AOC will continue to send out information in a document called a ‘sit rep,’ or situational report. It includes a quick synopsis of the weather situation, any local or state emergency declarations, and other significant information. I also include a summary of what all our partners are doing to prepare so it’s easy to find in one document. With a couple days’ notice we can put all the pieces together.”

How prepared for severe weather is CLT compared to other airports?

“We are certified as a Storm Ready Airport with the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service did an assessment to make sure we have all the appropriate plans, procedures, and communications in place. Only 31 airports with commercial flights are certified, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport is the only other airport in North Carolina on the list. We’ve been in this program for several years. It’s another level of assurance in the emergency management world that we’ve gone through the appropriate process and procedures with the experts who say, ‘yes, you are ready for severe weather.’”

Who decides to cancel flights?

“The airlines look at the forecast and determine if they must reroute or cancel flights to keep people safe. When storms are coming, the airlines are extremely proactive in cancelling flights, rerouting them or making other changes to minimize the impact.”

When do you decide if the Airport has to close?

“The Airport NEVER closes. Flights may be cancelled, or we might have to pause take offs and landings, but our doors are always open. Ultimately, the airlines make sure people get from point A to point B safely. But when passengers are delayed here, we are more than happy to work with the airlines to accommodate them. We’ll always have personnel here and we make sure the lights stay on.

“I think about how we can accommodate passengers if the airlines start cancelling flights. If for some reason there is a mass cancellation event, Airport Operations comes together and implements our plans and procedures to support the traveling public and the airlines. Can we house passengers in the terminal? Do we have enough supplies? Do we have concessions staying open overnight? And if so, how many and where are they located?

“The Airport is very much a transient population. People are here for a very short time. If they must stay here for longer than expected, we will make them as comfortable as possible. It’s really priority number one.

“CLT is unique because 30% of our passenger traffic is local; 70% of our passenger traffic is from connections.

“Many people are not starting their journey here. They may have a two- or three-hour gap between flights. When that turns into a slight delay, or a severe delay, we look at it a little differently. These are not people who can go back home.”

Why do flights sometimes get diverted to Charlotte?

“It’s a very coordinated dance. When an airport is experiencing severe storms, they will sometimes pause all take offs and landings. It happened several times this summer. Atlanta had some bad storms, and the FAA issued a ground stop for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. That means no flights can take off for Atlanta. But aircraft that were already enroute need somewhere to go. We end up taking many of them for at least a couple of hours until the storms pass. We fuel the aircraft and send them on their way.”

What if there is a tornado warning?

“It’s a step-by-step process. If we go under a tornado warning and we see there’s a potential path for it coming to the Airport, we’ll make announcements in the terminal that everyone should seek shelter appropriately, stay away from glass and open spaces.

“By our definition, all restrooms are considered shelters. Also, we relocate people to the corridors and hallways that are away from open glass. Fortunately, with five concourses, we have enough space to accommodate people. It’s also incumbent on the airlines to stop the flights. The FAA takes care of that.”

Has the Airport been struck by lightning?

“Lightning has struck a runway, and it blew out a piece of the pavement. Our fantastic airfield maintenance crew went out and patched it quickly to get us back up and running.”

What do you want travelers to know?

“We can’t control the weather, but we can be prepared for it. Know that CLT has the professional staff to handle anything and everything that may happen. We have the plans in place and want to make it as seamless an operation as possible.

“Just like our customers, when I travel with my family, I want to get from point A to point B as quickly and efficiently as possible. If there’s an emergency along the way, it’s understandable. But we always have a backup plan for what we will do if our travels are interrupted, and I encourage others to have a secondary plan as well.

“The weather is what it is. We can’t control it. All we can do is stay alert, prepare ourselves, respond to it and, if necessary, recover as quickly as we can.”

Eyes on the Skies – Watching the Weather Important at CLT

Aug. 30, 2023 – For some of us, a family vacation or trip to see Grandma would not be complete without our fur babies. You can take your dog or cat on a domestic flight in many cases, but there are several things you need to do to prepare for your trip. In this article, we are talking about pets; there are different rules for certified service dogs.

First and foremost, check with your airline. Each airline has its own rules for flying with pets, including whether the animal can fly in the cabin or must go in the cargo area. Also, reserve your pet’s spot when you book your trip. Most airlines only let a certain number of animals on each flight.

Once you have booked travel for you and your pet, here’s what you need to do:

Pre-flight check-up

Most airlines require a pet health certificate signed by a veterinarian just a couple of days before your trip to ensure the animal is healthy and cleared for travel. Be sure to get the form your airline requires.
The carrier

Verify your pet carrier is compliant with your airline when it comes to size, shape and material. You’ll also want to make sure it’s cool with your pet. Leave it out for a few days before your trip and put a favorite toy or small blanket that smells like you inside.
Travel day

Some pet owners like to exercise their dogs right before traveling, so they’ll be ready to nap on the flight. Consider stopping at a dog park or going for a long walk before arriving at CLT.
Security

First and foremost, do NOT put your pet in the x-ray tunnel! Take your dog or cat out of the carrying case and then put the carrier on the belt.
Be sure to keep your pet on a leash or in your arms. Ask a Transportation Security Administration agent how they want you to proceed. Sometimes they will ask you to walk with your pet through the metal detector, sometimes they may pull you aside for a separate screening.

The terminal

- Chill. If you have time before your flight, find a quiet area to relax with your furry friend. Going through security can be stressful, so be sure to give them lots of love.
- Visit one of CLT’s pet relief areas:
  - Concourse A near gates A21-A29.
  - The Plaza, near the intersection of Concourses D and E, located near the restrooms.
  - Concourse E near Gate E36.
  - Baggage Claim, Zone E.
- Reward your pup. When picking up a latte for yourself, ask the Starbucks barista for a pup cup for your furry friend. Dunkin’ will give you one too, they just don’t get as many requests.
- Watch where you walk. In consideration of your pet’s safety, please do not let them ride on moving sidewalks or escalators. We don’t want their little paws or nails to get caught in any of the many moving parts.

A little bit of preparation can make traveling through CLT with your pet a pawsitive experience for everyone.

Did you know?

Certain breeds of dogs and cats are not allowed to fly in the cargo area? Brachycephalic or short-nosed animals, like pugs, bulldogs, Shih Tzus as well as Burmese, Persian and Himalayan are more prone to respiratory problems. Changes in air pressure and temperature can make it worse. Rules for short-nosed animals vary by airline.

Planning Key to Pawtastic Experience Flying with Pets

Jun. 29, 2023 – What you don’t see is as important as what you do when you come to the Airport.

It’s no secret that air travel is bouncing back from the pandemic slump. The CLT terminal is filled with people, lines are everywhere and parking is in high demand.

CLT is always looking at ways to improve the travel experience. Often that work happens behind the scenes. If everything is working well internally and passengers are planning ahead, the travel journey goes more smoothly.  

Don’t Fly by the Seat of Your Pants is a phrase you will hear often from us this summer and beyond. It will be accompanied by tips for traveling, whether it’s a normal day where everything goes right or one of those crazy days with bumps along the way.

The phrase originated in Great Britain, and it comes from aviation (yes, really). According to Wonderopolis, an online site where curious questions are answered:

“Since early aircraft did not have the many instruments modern planes have, pilots had to rely primarily on their own perceptions and judgement. Early pilots often flew without radios and other fancy gadgets. Instead, they learned to react to the feel of the plane. Of course, the body part that usually had the most contact with the plane was the pilot's backside.

“Early pilots developed an ability to estimate wind speed, external temperature and the overall condition of an airplane simply by paying attention to their senses — including the sense of feeling from their backsides!

“If you can imagine flying a plane without a radio or other instruments through clouds or thick fog, you can begin to imagine what it must have been like for early pilots to fly by the seat of their pants!”

There are a few thoughts on its meaning today but generally, it suggests you are acting on instinct or improvising without planning.

As the Airport terminal’s owner and operator, we strive to do everything we can to ensure the Airport is running at the peak performance levels. We also strive to support our eight major airlines and countless partners that contribute to safety and security and provide the services and amenities you expect. We are:

- staying flexible and adjusting operations in real time and as needed.
- adding staff throughout the Ticketing lobby to help direct people and answer questions. With construction happening all around us, we understand the terminal may look different – whether your last visit was two weeks ago, or this is your first time flying. Look for the Airport workers in the yellow vests or stop at the Information Services Counter near Checkpoint A if you need some help.
- deploying teams who are working 24/7 to handle any issue, whether the baggage belts or air conditioning stops working or there’s an accident on the roads leading to the terminal.
- working closely with our Transportation Security Administration partners who staff and manage the security screening lanes. Check wait times frequently when driving here and again when you are in the terminal. Remember, any checkpoint gets you to any gate. Also, don’t forget to check your bags before you pack for weapons or other items not allowed in the Airport or on the plane. The TSA provides information on how to pack, declare and travel with a firearm on its website. If a weapon is found in your bags, that will cause delays for you and the many other passengers likely in line with you.
- in communication daily with our airline partners who get your bags from the check-in counter to the plane without hiccups. When something does happen, we have the expertise on standby to tackle problems quickly and efficiently and the ability to provide additional training to prevent future problems. Remember, only the airlines can manage flight delays or cancellations and getting your checked luggage to and from the plane. 

Finally, we are exploring ways to make it easier once you get here to move quickly through security. When you get in line, we want to estimate how long it will take you to go through screening. It’s based on technology like that used at theme park ride queues. More to come.

The majority of people who fly to, from and through CLT each day have a good travel experience. Planning ahead for everything from your parking (book it online ahead of time) to long lines (get here earlier than you think you need to) to flight status, cancellations or delays (have your airline contact information handy) is the best way to be proactive so you Don’t Fly by the Seat of Your Pants.

We’re Working Hard on the Travel Experience

Jun. 8, 2023 – CLT’s stature as an employment center and a top economic driver in the region is significant. The numbers cited by the most recent North Carolina State of Aviation report are impressive.

$32 billion annual economic impact
$1.82 billion in tax revenue generated
$9.9 billion in personal income created
151,575 jobs supported
So why should this matter to you?

Economic Vitality

CLT’s contribution of $32 billion to the state's economy in 2021, an increase from previous years, indicates significant economic growth and stability. This means businesses are thriving, job opportunities are increasing, and the overall economic environment is favorable. As a result, it has a positive impact on the average person by creating a stronger and more prosperous economy in which they can live, work, and thrive.

As examples: North Carolina’s public airports lease space to more than 3,300 private aircraft that generate more than $11.6 million in property tax revenues for their communities each year. The owner of a $23 million aircraft based at a North Carolina airport pays local property taxes equivalent to those paid by owners of 115 homes valued at $200,000 each.

That brings us to …

Jobs, jobs, jobs

The Airport and its supporting businesses along with those associated with construction are providing employment opportunities for a diverse range of professions and careers. This not only helps individuals find meaningful work, but also contributes to a thriving job market and offers stability to the workforce.

More job opportunities mean better chances for career advancement, increased income and improved financial security for individuals and families in North Carolina. An example: 800 construction-related jobs are associated with the Airport’s Destination CLT program, the $3.1 billion capital investment and infrastructure improvement project under way. Another 20,000 or so people work at the Airport, its businesses, partners and stakeholders. It is a small city.  

Tax Revenue and Public Services

The $1.82 billion in tax revenue generated by CLT in 2021 plays a crucial role in funding public services, infrastructure development and essential government initiatives.  It is revenue that directly benefits the citizens of North Carolina by improving public services and enhancing their quality of life.

The Airport is owned and operated by the City of Charlotte; however, it is does not collect public tax dollars. An enterprise fund of the city, the Airport is self-sustaining. Airport revenue funds all capital and operating costs per directives from the Federal Aviation Administration, which requires all airports to be financially self-sufficient.

CLT also is strategically expanding its business beyond aviation to diversify its financial portfolio and increase its non-aeronautical revenue. Non-aeronautical revenue is generated from commercial enterprises, such as concessions, duty free, parking, advertising, car rental facilities and real estate income.

Personal Income

The earnings infusion of $9.9 billion in personal income increases the purchasing power of residents, enabling them to support local businesses and contribute to economic growth within their communities. Personal income allows people to improve their standard of living, meet their financial needs, and potentially invest in education, healthcare and other essential aspects of life.

Consider this…

Would the Queen City be headquarters to 475 companies and corporations, including major banking and tech giants, without the connectivity to the world that an airport provides?

Without the connectivity CLT provides, would Charlotte be home to a bustling professional and minor league sports scene – from basketball, football and soccer to baseball and hockey? Don’t forget about NASCAR.

Many companies have stated the airport and the ability to connect to anywhere in the world was a primary reason to headquarter here - reinforcing that CLT is growing, providing connections and opportunities for people, goods and services around the world.

Why does this matter? The Airport has a direct impact on your economic well-being whether you travel or not. CLT helps foster a robust economy, creates career and job opportunities and personal income that contributes to quality of life for everyone who lives here.

Why CLT Matters to You – Even if You Don’t Fly

Apr. 26, 2023 – Everyone at Charlotte Douglas International Airport has a job to do – even the dogs. That’s right, the dogs.

CLT has more than 35 working dogs at the Airport. They have varying jobs from sniffing out drugs and explosives to easing passenger travel stress to searching for unwanted pests and agriculture that could be harmful to people and business in the U.S.

Scritches behind the ears are encouraged for the CLT Canine Crew, a team of 25 four-legged volunteers that are registered, professional therapy dogs. However, no matter how tempting it might be, the drug and explosive detection dogs and the canine agriculture dogs are hands off. This allows these law enforcement pooches to stay focused on the very important job of keeping the Airport and flights safe and secure.

No matter the job, the dogs of CLT are just like any other employee with important responsibilities.

The CLT Canine Crew

In addition to being a therapy dog, each has at least six months experience working in the field. From a tiny one-eyed white Pomeranian named Nugget to the gentle giant of a Mastiff named Hossa, these easy-going, friendly pups provide canine love, comfort, and support to travelers. Studies show that petting a dog helps reduce stress. At CLT, just seeing the Canine Crew is enough to make people smile.

You know you can pet these dogs because their handlers wear blue CLT Canine Crew T-shirts and each dog sports a blue ‘Pet Me’ vest.

Dylan, an English Cream Golden Retriever, is striking due to his rich, white fur. Super chill, he will walk right up to you, lay down and roll over for some belly rubs. Lydia, a Golden/Lab mix, is a mama bear who is especially good with puppies and is fond of costumes she wears when she comes to the Airport.

Julep and Tillie, both Clumber Spaniels, are a team. Julep is so happy to be here she can’t stop wiggling with excitement, while Tillie is calm and collected. New to the team last summer are Wilbur the Pug and Moose the Staffordshire Terrier mix. Wilbur is always excited to see customers, and Moose melts people’s hearts with the cutest puppy dog eyes.

Since the program’s inception in 2015 the Canine Crew has grown, in size and popularity. Dog teams love to pose for photographs with passengers and petting is always welcome.

The Beagle Brigade

Passengers entering the country at CLT from overseas destinations have likely seen Ears and other members of the Beagle Brigade. These U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) detector dogs are responsible for finding harmful plant pests and foreign animal disease before it enters the country.

Currently, CBP has over 155 Beagle teams (dog and handler equal a team), or Agriculture K9 teams, at U.S. ports of entry. In fiscal year 2022, these dogs referred over 129,000 agriculture products for interception due to the risks from plant pests or diseases.

Ears, age 2, is considered one of CLT’s top dogs. She’s a tiny Beagle that gets a lot of attention. An outgoing, friendly, affable pup, Ears got her name from nipping the ears of other puppies she lived with before entering training as an agriculture specialist. With 445 million scent receptors in her nose, she can scan many passengers and all the luggage from a large international flight in minutes, compared to individual inspections and x-rays that can take much longer.

Ears’ reward for finding prohibited agriculture and pests is treats. She loves salmon, apples and bacon scents and flavors. She gets low-calorie, high protein treats to keep trim since food is a reward. A busy day can mean a lot of treats.

Bomb and Drug Detection Dogs

Unlike Ears, the drug and bomb detection dogs work for their favorite toy.  When they find something in need of inspection, the dogs sit as an alert to their handler.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department manages the Airport’s drug and explosive detection dogs. The explosive detection dogs are part of the Transportation Security Administration but are handled by CMPD through a partnership. Driven and hardworking, these K9s go through months of training before their first job and then train throughout their career.

These law enforcement canine work around aircraft, cargo, vehicles, at checkpoints and in public areas of the Airport. They have a single purpose and receive nonstop training to detect drugs and explosives.

While it is serious work, these pups have unique and fun personalities that their handers often see in downtime at home and in working long hours together.

Because they are working dogs, this crew doesn’t lounge on the sofa, receive treats for tricks or chase their favorite toy in the back yard. Remember, their favorite toy is reward for finding drugs or explosives in their detection work.

Passengers often only see the working side of the dogs.

There is Robi, a Hungarian Vizsla, that despite his seriousness is a very affectionate dog that loves his toys. His favorite is a tennis ball. Robi, 5, also is especially curious about cameras and is not shy about putting his nose print on a lens pointed in his direction.

Erich Eric is a 7-year-old German Shephard who is named for a 9-11 victim. That’s why he has two first names – his own and the name of the person he is named in memory of. Inox, the 3-year-old Malinois, has no fear and is quite serious about his job. His favorite food is strawberries. Nera, an 8-year-old Shephard, is methodical in her work, but a softy underneath that serious exterior. Oh, and she’s a Raiders fan.

Puki, a German Shorthaired Pointer from Greece, is the newest CMPD team member. He’s a lover with an affection for tennis balls. And Mia the Malinois is a social butterfly dubbed ‘mayor of the Airport.”

TSA Explosive Detection Canine Team

The TSA Explosive Detection Canine Team works alongside the CMPD in patrolling the Airport. While the CMPD K9 teams are your typical explosive detection canines that conduct searches of bags, buildings, aircraft, vehicles and cargo, you are more likely to see the TSA Explosive Detection dogs screening passengers and bags in the security checkpoint lines.

Like all the dogs at the Airport, this crew of six hardworking pups is filled with personality.

There is Mongo, a black Labrador Retriever that acts like a playful puppy. Pepe is a yellow Labrador laid back and calm no matter what he encounters. Both love tennis balls for their reward. Don’t be surprised to see Pepe chasing his ball, which is attached to a rope, around the terminal.

Dingo, Baron and Grom2 are German Short Haired Pointers who share duties with Hary the German Shepherd. Baron is the grand old man of the group and loves attention, while the playful Grom2 and Dingo are the newest members of the team. Dingo is a bundle of energy, who loves to work for his tennis ball reward. Grom2 loves to play with his reward, which is a Chuckit! Hary is always looking to work – he’s called the true definition of working canine – and, more importantly, getting his black Kong reward for a job well done.

So, next time you see CLT’s working dogs go pet a Canine Crew member. Please keep your distance from the Beagle Brigade, the TSA dogs and the CMPD bomb and drug detection dogs while thanking them for their service in keeping travel safe and secure.

Working Dogs of CLT Play Vital Role in Airport Experience

Feb. 8, 2023 - Remember the days of going on a business trip and squeezing in some extra time for sightseeing and fun? Remember feeling lucky if your employer let you push your return flight beyond the official business trip’s end so you could do that?

That was more the norm for many workers before 2020, before the pandemic rocked our worlds.

The pandemic changed how many of us approach the work-life balance, where people can and do work and how we work. We discovered we do not have to be in an office to be ‘at work.’ Internet, Wi-Fi, and VPNs make it possible, for example, to be sitting on the beach, working as the family enjoys time in the sun and sand. Or now a hotel room in Nashville is your office by day, then at night you and your friends are soaking up the country music resonating across Music City USA.

The workplace is changing and as it does the passenger profile for airports everywhere, including Charlotte Douglas International Airport, is changing.

Before the pandemic business and leisure travel was nearly evenly split 50-50%. Business travel plummeted in 2020 due to the pandemic and the proliferation of virtual meetings. At the same time, cheaper plane tickets (and people tired of being cooped up after quarantine) pushed leisure travel to 76% of CLT’s business. Business travel dropped to just 17%.

One need only spend some time people watching in our terminal to see there are fewer business suits these days and hundreds of more casually dressed singles, families, and vacationers. What we see now is the leisure traveler carrying everything they need to work wherever their destination is.

This blended, or bleisure, traveler has always been among us.  There are more of them now. Based on CLT passenger survey responses in 2022, blended travelers comprised 5% of passengers at CLT, up strikingly from 2% in 2019 before the pandemic struck. Business travelers, in those same surveys, increased from 17% during the pandemic to 22% percent in 2022.  

According to Travel Weekly, blended travel is more than a bit of pre- or post-work fun. Business travelers want more flexibility, and companies are beginning to cater more to those who want to work remotely for a few extra weeks or just want to work from anywhere but the office.

The changing workplace, employer flexibility, ease of staying virtually connected all add up to a slower than normal return of business travel to pre-pandemic dominance. In 2022, business travel had minimally ticked up to 22 percent of CLT passengers. We will be watching to see where it goes next.

Bleisure Travel Grows at CLT

Jun. 30, 2022 - Let’s get real about summer travel. It’s a bit of a mess. You know it. We know it.

The fix is as complicated as the way we got here. First some background, then we want to share some things our customers should do when traveling now and in the future.

How we got here: CLT is operated by a department of the City of Charlotte. We work with countless businesses that make leisure and business travel possible. Think airlines, concessions, bag handlers, security screeners, air traffic controllers and so many others. You can also think of us this way – the Aviation Department is like the mall operator renting to the businesses, such as the airlines, that are here. While the staff who help operate the Airport don’t schedule (or cancel) your flights or handle your luggage, we all recognize we have a role, and we recognize it’s a tough time to travel.

Recovering from the pandemic has been a challenge. Thousands in the aviation industry and supporting businesses were laid off or furloughed while travelers were hunkered down in quarantine. Some workers left the busy, people-filled Airport environment like an airport because of COVID concerns. Some found other jobs and moved on. That created staffing shortages that many in the travel business are still scrambling to fix today. We’ve all heard about the nationwide shortage of workers. The pandemic did a number on our workforce too, and we still feel its effects months after a new normal. Meanwhile, our customers were emerging from lockdowns and eager to travel, anywhere.

Pilots are retiring at the mandatory age 65 in record numbers. During the pandemic, the training and licensing of new pilots slowed. Airlines offered early retirement packages to pilots and crew to help offset sudden unemployment and cut costs while planes sat empty. At the same time, rental car and ride-share services like Uber and Lyft have not recovered as quickly as some would like thanks to COVID.

As people are emerging from two-plus years of laying low because of COVID, supply and demand disconnects are wreaking havoc on travel. Holidays compound this because more people travel during the summer and holidays than at any other time of the year.

This July 4 weekend it's predicted record numbers of people will be flying to, from and through CLT. Ours has been one of a few airports in the nation to recover quickly from the pandemic thanks to its close relationship with American Airlines and our position as its second-largest hub.

So, yes, we’re busy here at CLT. You must plan for your travel. There will be more cars on our roads, longer lines, longer wait times for shuttle buses and the parking facilities, including the cell phone waiting lot, will fill up fast.

We know our customers are adapting. We appreciate it, but now more than ever, planning ahead of coming to the Airport is essential.

PARKING: When you book your flight, reserve your parking at the same time at parkCLT.com. Demand for parking is high at CLT and has been for months. Rental car and ride-share services like Uber and Lyft have not recovered as quickly as some would like thanks to COVID. If you are coming to the Airport, a reservation made at least six hours in advance (but we recommend much more advance booking because of high demand) is a way to guarantee you have a parking place. And don’t forget, you can always have someone drop you off at the airport or you can catch a bus or a taxi instead.

EXPECT LINES: Get here early. There are going to be crowds and lines. Plan on it. Arriving an hour before your flight is scheduled to leave is not enough time anymore.

You need to be in the terminal in line with your airline or at the security checkpoint two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before international flights. This is the minimum. Anything less and you risk missing your flight. Don’t take that chance.

AIRLINES: Eight major airlines operate at CLT with American Airlines being the largest and accounting for nearly 90 percent of all arrivals and departures. It’s important that if you are told your flight is delayed, or worse canceled, that you get in touch with your airline as quickly as possible. Some airlines are already offering travel waivers ahead of the July 4 holiday. Download the airline’s app on your mobile device. Save their numbers on your cell phone. Have their contact information readily available.

PATIENCE: Thank you for your business. As we all work to recover from the pandemic and as you take to the skies this weekend and in the days ahead, please follow signs or ask an Airport worker for help when needed.  We recognize it’s tough out there for everyone – from the people who check you in for your flight to those who make your coffee to the men and women who pilot and crew the planes that fly you to your travel destination.

Don’t take chances with your travel, especially right now when so much can go awry.

Let’s Get Real About Summer Travel

Jun. 14, 2022 - Everyone has moved at least once in their lives. Nobody would say it is fun.

CLT is going to be experiencing a big move in the not-too-distant future that will affect our community.

The key word there is MOVE.

Not close. Not end. No going away parties. No thanks-for-memories, to be relegated to the mind’s eye. This will be a short move. Just a few thousand feet.

As with any move there must be planning. And an upgrade or two. Or, in this case, about 15.

Plans are underway to relocate the Airport Overlook as part of the North End Around Taxiway project, which includes airfield improvements associated with the forthcoming runway.

To be clear: The current Airport Overlook will NOT close until the new area is open to the public.

A simple address change, without the need to contact the U.S. Postal Service to get the mail forwarded.

We Want You! (To Come Work With Us at the Airport)

Jan. 12, 2022 - For two years we at CLT have pivoted countless times, strived to persevere through one of the most challenging times in aviation history and ridden the roller coaster of an always evolving public health crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic took the wind from under our wings at first. The Airport never closed, but our business partners were forced to shutter either for safety reasons or due to the lack of passengers and customers in the pandemic’s early days. We hobbled along as people canceled flights and stayed home. We took advantage of the “slow time” to make changes and improvements throughout the Airport so that customers felt safe and could stay healthy while traveling.

It was scary as all get out. We grappled alongside our customers to stay safe while working to keep the Airport operating and vital to the nation’s air transportation network and to restore passenger confidence in flying.

It wasn’t easy either. There were days when the Airport was so full that people wondered if there was a pandemic going on. CLT was busier than most other airports because it is American Airlines’ second-largest U.S. hub and a hub American deemed vital to its business despite the pandemic. So, when we are busy, we are REALLY busy.

We have been blessed for many months now with a busy airport. We are nearly as busy now as we were in 2019, our record-breaking year for passengers. We are happy that customers have the confidence to fly again.

But just as we did in the first wake of the pandemic, our efforts to provide a safe Airport remain steadfast as we come upon year three of living with COVID-19. Many of the changes we made more than a year ago remain in place:

Enhanced housekeeping: Airport housekeeping is a 24/7 job anyway, but throughout the pandemic, we have ramped up efforts to monitor cleanliness and pay special attention to the things you encounter often. Our partners in the terminal, such as the airlines, retail and dining concessions and others, continue to take steps to stem to spread of COVID-19.

Healthy air: Hospital-grade air filters are in place throughout CLT’s heating and air conditioning systems and in many places, UV-C light also sanitizes the air. UV lighting also is being used to continuously clean the people-mover handrails.

Hand Sanitizing Stations: More than 60 hand sanitizing stations were installed throughout the terminal when soap and water are not readily available.

Protective Shields: Many customer-service counters - from stores to airline ticket counters to parking toll booths to the security checkpoints – are equipped with protective shields for added passenger and employee safety.

Masks Required: The Transportation Security Administration still requires anyone coming in the Airport or one of our other facilities (such as parking decks and shuttle buses) to always wear a mask. Airlines require their customers to wear a mask while onboard flights too. If you forget yours or need a fresh one, masks are available at each security checkpoint podium and the Visitor Info Center located in Baggage Claim. Please Rock Your Mask for everyone’s safety.

Safety Approval: To ensure we were doing all we can, we sought independent review. CLT was the first airport in North Carolina to receive the international stamp of approval for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention in our facilities. The Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR™ Facility Accreditation recognizes CLT has implemented the most stringent protocols for cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention in its facilities. We are in the process of seeking reaccreditation.

In March 2020 as it is today in January 2022, we are committed to ensuring our passengers have a safe and positive travel experience when flying to, from or through Charlotte Douglas International. It’s been a long, challenging two years. We are glad passengers feel confident to fly again and we are looking forward to a 2022 that is prosperous for all the businesses at CLT. Their livelihood and the airport’s impact on the local and state economy depend on it.

CLT perseveres during the pandemic; hopeful for 2022

Jan. 12, 2022 - For more than a year Haley Gentry has been in the cockpit, so to speak, at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, steering the Airport and its operator, the City of Charlotte Aviation Department, through some of the most turbulent months in recent memory.

Gentry began her career as an intern at CLT 30 years ago. She worked her way through the ranks and in October 2021 was named to her new leadership role. Gentry has a breadth of knowledge and experience that is unique, in part because of her tenure in the industry. But of particular note, she is the first woman to lead CLT as its chief executive officer and aviation director in the Airport’s 87-year history.

The Charlotte Observer recently picked Gentry and one of five Charlotte leaders to watch in 2022. Gentry and the others are at the center of key happenings and leadership in the Charlotte region headed into the new year, the Queen City newspaper said.

Here’s a look at an expanded version of a question-and-answer interview Gentry participated in.

What are the main challenges or opportunities for the Charlotte airport in 2022?  

COVID will continue to be a challenge for the foreseeable future.  We must find a way to live with the virus and associated challenges for travel. 

The past two years have changed our workplaces and how we conduct business.  Our employees are our most valuable resource and are essential to providing the services that make the airport functional.  The lack of human resources has significantly impacted all employers at the Airport.  Maintaining the staff, we have and identifying future employees is a top priority.  We must continue to develop creative strategies to address this challenge. The other significant opportunity is to continue diversifying our revenue portfolio by increasing non-aeronautical revenue.  The past year certainly taught us the importance of this.  We must continue to safeguard the Airport by ensuring we are financially self-sustaining regardless of passenger volume.  

The Charlotte airport has been one of the busiest in the county this year as air travel rebounds from deep drops in passenger travel at the height of the pandemic. What strategies have helped CLT recover from the pandemic challenges? Is CLT uniquely situated to continue a strong recovery?  

Very early in the pandemic, American Airlines made it known that Dallas and Charlotte would be their two hubs of focus.  The strength of the hub has pulled CLT through the last two years and propelled us to being the 6th busiest airport in the country.  Other airports throughout the country have not been so fortunate. CLT has a long history of fiscal conservatism and that served us well during this worldwide crisis. We take pride in being a good business partner, in the good times and bad.  This crisis of the past year brought the aviation industry together in unprecedented ways, further solidifying our strong partnerships.

Why is a strong airport important for the city? How does the airport's COVID-19 recovery affect Charlotte?

The Airport is this region’s top economic tool.  It is the gateway to the world for our community and generates $24.6 Billion in local economic impact. In January 2019, (pre-pandemic) the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reported the Airport’s contribution to 132,000 jobs for North Carolina residents.  A healthy, thriving airport is an indicator of a strong and prosperous community.  The recovery of CLT is a positive economic indicator of our region.

What should Charlotteans expect to see with Airport construction in 2022? How have those plans changed during COVID, if at all?

Passengers will continue to see and experience the impacts of our Terminal Lobby Expansion.  This became a focus project for us at the onset of the pandemic. Initially, we were able to gain some strides with fewer passengers in the building.  This upgrade to our front doorstep is a $608 million investment and will provide an additional 366,000 square feet of new and renovated space to our lobby space, making a dramatic improvement to the passenger experience and overall functionality of the terminal.  We also anticipate the initiation of a project which adds 10 gates to Concourse A.  This new structure will be a sister concourse matching the 10-gate expansion previously added in 2018.  This is critical to providing additional gate capacity for the hub and non-hub airlines. 

2022 will mark the beginning of your first full year as Charlotte's permanent aviation director — can you share how you're feeling about the next year in the job? And can you share any reflections on your transition to the job over the past year?

It has been a unique time in history to be in a leadership role.  There is no playbook for how to operate a business during a pandemic.  COVID has impacted our professional and personal lives in so many unanticipated ways.  We have had to rely on the tried-and-true basics of keeping it simple while sprinkling in some innovation.  We have learned it is essential to remain nimble and be able to pivot when the environment changes and I think this is something the Airport team has done very well.  We often say to new employees, you will never be bored at the Airport.  I suspect the upcoming year will live up to that mantra.

A Q&A with CEO Haley Gentry

Oct. 19, 2021 -While a lot of people around the world have been working from home throughout much of the pandemic, thousands of men and women at Charlotte Douglas International Airport never left the workplace.

These employees were called ‘‘essential’’ in COVID-19’s early days. As the pandemic dragged on, the definition of what and who was essential changed.

More than 20,000 people working at the Airport – including nearly 700 who are employed by the Airport operator, the City of Charlotte Aviation Department – are all essential in some way. Each has a role in keeping the Airport running efficiently. But there is no doubt that those who came to work at the Airport every day, deserve special recognition.

We want to salute the men and women who have helped keep CLT operating since March 2020 when COVID-19 first rocked our world:

Pilots, flight attendants, ticket agents, customer service reps. Ramp workers, aircraft and avionics maintenance technicians, engine mechanics, wing walkers, airfield operations specialists, airline caterers, air traffic controllers, airline cargo handlers.

Police, firefighters, first responders, paramedics, TSA agents, Customs and Border Protection officers, Airport security, sky marshals.

Taxi drivers, ride-share operators, shuttle bus drivers, valet attendants, wheelchair attendants, vehicle maintenance mechanics, HVAC specialists, the IT geeks who keep computers and technology running.

Servers, chefs, cooks, retail cashiers, salespeople, waiters and waitresses, housekeepers.

Every day. On site. Doing everything in their power to stay safe amid a raging pandemic and help keep planes in the air and passengers on their travels.

There have been complaints about lost tempers, customer service that could have been more pleasant, and yes, closed restaurants and stores due to either a decrease in passenger traffic or the labor shortages that resulted from layoffs early in the pandemic. And we have all seen the stories of upset and unruly passengers lashing out at the very people there to keep them safe and on their travels. Unruly behavior is not tolerated, and the FAA and TSA could level fines on people who do not follow COVID rules and protocols or who disrupt air travel.

It’s is challenging for all of us to adapt in an unprecedented pandemic and all the changes it has brought to our lives. But each one of these essential, onsite workers do their best. They come to work with the goal of keeping the Airport open and serving our customers.

They do their best with the most unusual of circumstances. They continue to do so as CLT’s business partners begin to bounce back from dwindling passenger traffic that caused layoffs 18 months ago and hiring challenges in 2021 as your confidence to fly returned and you flocked to the Airport to travel.

We owe these folks a debt of gratitude. These essential workers at CLT, and airports around the nation, have been and are still today critical to keeping the nation’s air transportation network operating. They are critical to your travel experience.

Salute. High five. Kudos. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A shout out to the Airport’s essential workers

Jul. 1, 2021 - COVID-19 has changed a lot about our daily lives. As we start to venture out again and as we start to travel more, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the manners we were taught as children and the common courtesies that are critical to interacting with other people.

The news of fights aboard aircraft and in airports, assaults on airline crews, general disorder during travel, attacks on Airport workers and arguments about masks amid a pandemic is disheartening. We are better than that.

As vaccines have rolled out, people are more comfortable traveling. But we must remember that airports and airplanes are inherently crowded places. For safety, we are required to wear masks inside the Airport and onboard aircraft. It is still the official federal guidance from medical experts.

We said it before. It’s the right thing to do.

If someone needed help with walking or standing, many of us would be right there to offer assistance. If someone sitting near us was having a heart attack, difficulty breathing or was choking, we’d be there to quickly help. Because we care about our fellow human beings and as kids we were taught to be helpful and caring.

Because we care, we need to remember to be kind. Kindness goes a long way. The pandemic has affected us all in different ways. Likewise, each of us has responded and adjusted our lives in different ways. Yes, the rules we have been asked to abide by over the last 15 months have been inconvenient, a challenge, and even politically divisive.

But as you go back out in the world and as you make your travel plans, remember the basic manners we all learned as children:

- Say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ Simple courtesy goes a long way in making people feel valued and happy to help. Disrespect or rude treatment of people in any role is wrong.  
- Don’t interrupt. Let people finish talking, even if you think they are wrong.  Let’s use our “inside voice.” It’s common courtesy and respectful to keep conversations calm.
- Temper negative opinions when it comes to wearing a mask and keeping your distance. None of us likes it, but we should respect our fellow human beings enough to accept their choice.
- Be patient. Change is hard. The pandemic is forcing us to change in ways we never thought possible.

Good manners are important. It seems like in the many months of quarantining we have forgotten those manners or decided we no longer need to be polite or respectful to people. Somehow it has become ok to be rude, belligerent and mean. Next time you want to lash out, ask yourself how your grandma or pawpaw would feel if he or she were on the receiving end of that. Then maybe rethink it and opt for kindness and being polite instead.

We are all in this together. Be kind.

Jun. 30, 2021 - You’ve heard it on the news – travel has really picked up since the early days of the pandemic. That has many CLT businesses between a rock and a hard place as they address staffing shortages while trying to hire for many open positions with the TSA, concessions, airlines, and other Airport businesses.

At the same time, business travel has decreased, leisure travel has skyrocketed. For many people, this is the first time they have traveled. For others, it is the first time in a long time that they have traveled. Much is the same when it comes to travel preparedness and the Airport journey, but much has changed in the last year.

So, as you get ready to shake off quarantine and board a plane to that dream destination or to see family and friends, there are some things you can do to prepare and to make your Airport experience easy and effortless.

First: PLAN AHEAD.

We cannot say this enough. This is essential BEFORE you come to the Airport.

- We know you know this so let’s get it out of the way first. Don’t forget to check on the COVID-19 protocols all passengers and Airport visitors are expected to follow. This includes wearing a mask per federal mandate while in the Airport. Airlines require them too. If you forget yours, ask for one at the TSA checkpoint podiums or at the Visitor Info Center in Baggage Claim. More information about CLT’s response to COVID is on our website.
- Check your flight status on your airline’s app. Then, download your boarding pass on your mobile device, or if you are still using paper, print it out at home.
- Check the security wait times on cltairport.com or on the CLT Airport app. It’s free to download in the Apple Store or Google Play. Remember you can use any security checkpoint in the terminal. You don’t have to go through Checkpoint E because you are flying out of Concourse E. It might be a little farther to walk, but if the line is shorter at Checkpoint B, why not get in line there? It’s faster, and you will be closer to the Chick-fil-A right outside Checkpoint B. You can grab a meal and a drink then head for seating in the Atrium or at your gate. Real-time wait times change frequently so check the app and website often before and after you get here.
- It helps the checkpoint lines move faster if you check your baggage with your airline, rather than carry it onto the plane. Speaking of baggage, if you are going to carry on, make sure there is nothing in your luggage that would cause alarms to go off in security. When that happens, it slows down the screening process for everyone while your bags are inspected for prohibited items. Weapons, including guns that you may have a concealed weapon permit for, are prohibited in the Airport and onboard your aircraft.  “I forgot it was in there” doesn’t absolve you of possible fines and other penalties, including jail time. TSA has a handy app to check what else is and is not allowed on a flight.
- Book your parking online. You are guaranteed a parking spot and can save money over drive-up rates. Look for the online booking at cltairport.com/parking. Rates are increasing July 6 for drive-up customers so that’s even more reason to book ahead of time.
- If you are arriving in Charlotte and need a rental car, book ahead. Some companies are experiencing ground transportation shortages right now too.

Second: ARRIVE EARLY

This means arrive early AT THE TERMINAL. Not the parking lot or shuttle bus stop. Inside the terminal checking in and getting in line for security.

Given how busy it is and the accommodations being made to adjust for staffing shortages, the airlines and TSA strongly recommend you arrive three hours before your flight’s scheduled departure. Keep in mind:

- Even if the security wait time app says wait times are short at the checkpoints, don’t chance it. Leave home early. A lot can happen in the time it takes you to drive to the Airport, park and check in.
- Weekend travel, beginning on Thursdays going through Sunday, is always the busiest time. If there is a holiday, count on it being even busier.

Third: Shop, dine and relax

Once you are through security, there’s plenty to do to keep busy while you wait for your flight to leave.

- Get your steps in – a walk through the entire terminal is about three miles. At a brisk pace that’s about 5,781 steps.
- While walking, take time to enjoy the artwork located throughout the terminal. Many are creations from North Carolina artists.
- If you can snag a rocking chair in the Atrium or the mezzanine overlooking the Atrium, take advantage of it then kick back, relax and rock the minutes away. You can people-watch or gaze out the two-story windows at the planes parked outside.  
- Hungry? Ran out of your own snacks (yes, many foods are allowed through the checkpoint)? CLT has many great places to eat. Several restaurants and stores are open for limited hours while they try to hire more people. If you must walk to another concourse to find something, please understand our concessions are working as quickly as possible to hire, train, do background checks (required for everyone who works at CLT) and fully reopen. We regret many of the lines are long right now, but our partners are glad to see you. We appreciate your patience and support.

Finally …

Pack your patience.  

Like you, the people working at the Airport are dealing with the pandemic too. The Airport workers encounter thousands of customers every day. Each has a different need or concern. Sometimes nerves get frayed. Stress and tensions rise. Anger or frustration comes out. Take a deep breath. Remember, CLT workers are here and committed to helping make the travel experience better.

Please be kind to them.

May 28, 2021 - Airports are not art museums, but the work of an artist goes a long way in creating a sense of place, sharing history and culture and calming people in a very busy travel environment.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is extremely fortunate to host the works of 16 artists from around the world, including people from right here in North Carolina. From sculptures that welcome passengers as they drive up to the terminal to colorful and interactive installations hanging in the terminal, there is plenty for passengers to study and enjoy.

The American Association of Airport Executives, a membership organization for people working at airports, pondered the role of public art in general and public art in airports specifically a few years ago. 

“To truly witness the character of a city, one needs a composite view. Local history and the natural landscape can communicate time-honored value; while commerce or industry can tell of economic prowess and a community’s plans for the future. Just as these lenses can reveal the features and talents of a population, so too can the productivity of a city’s creatives. Fueled by the interests and imaginations of artists, curators, and other arts workers, public artworks and exhibitions can distinguish their surroundings with enticing insight.

“When situated in an airport, the role of the public art is given another dimension. In addition to symbolizing a place, the work now serves the traveler—welcoming, grounding, or inspiring them. As passengers do look up from the busy activity of a trip, thoughtfully curated artworks can be humanizing reminders of travel’s gift of discovery.”

In 2015 the prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine named its list of nine “American Airports for Art Lovers.” While CLT was not on the list, our airport is home to some truly thought-provoking and innovative art installations.

“Loops,” in The Plaza between Concourses D and E, is a suspended kinetic sculpture inspired by aircraft contrails. Its rotation is motorized but that does not take away from the slow, measured, hypnotic movement created by the 200 linear feet of intertwined tubing.

On Concourse A Expansion, “Interconnected” is a 140-foot-long, 10-foot high digital screen that takes data generated by the airport from aircraft movements, people, baggage handling and other digital data and transforms it into mesmerizing, always moving, ever-changing digital sculpture. There are three screens of artist Refik Anadol’s digital art on the concourse. At night they are visible in vivid color to people driving up to the terminal curb front. At the time of its installation, CLT was the first airport in the world to have a large data-driven piece of artwork like “Interconnected

Another example of art in motion can be found in the center of the Atrium. Hanging above a sushi bar, the “First in Flight” mobile features 16 aircraft, including the International Space Station, a Boeing 747 and the Spirit of St. Louis, on three levels all rotating around each other.

Even static art on display at CLT weave a story about aviation and travel into the artists’ creative mind and onto canvas.

“Playful Race of Life Patterns” by Jonathan Grauel at Gate A3 is a layered painting that captures the city’s history in textiles alongside NASCAR heritage and flying in a whimsical way. Speaking of whimsy, pigs do fly … along with fish, alligators, bears and horses … in the humorous “Journey I” and “Journey II” at Gates  B3 and B4.

Each piece or art in the airport is a showcase of the people who live in Charlotte, the diversity of the community the airport serves and the history and culture of the city. The airport is often a flyer’s first impression of the city and North Carolina. Art is but one way to tell our story to a captive audience.

May 28, 2021 - Where else can you work that every day brings a spectacular sunrise and sunset city view through massive windows, where cloudless blue skies seem to stretch on forever and where you can be within feet of aircraft that are the marvels of modern air transportation and feats of technology?

At Charlotte Douglas International Airport, that’s where. Hundreds of businesses at the Airport are hiring right now.

CLT is a major employment center, with nearly 22,000 workers on site. The majority (more than 12,000) are employed by American Airlines, with nearly 10,000 additional workers employed by other airlines, tenants, contractors and businesses. Charlotte Douglas also is a major contributor to the region's economy, including 169,390 jobs for North Carolina residents and $5.7 billion in personal income, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation Division of Aviation.

Jobs in a variety of categories are available at the airport. There are careers in aviation and airport security, managers and supervisors of the 130 and growing dining and retail outlets, stockers, drivers, baristas, cooks and so many more. Nearly all the organizations and businesses, including the Transportation Security Administration, HMS Host and Paradies Lagardère are hiring. Don’t forget about the Aviation Department, CLT’s operator. We’re hiring too.

CLT has many safety protocols in place to protect passengers and Airport workers. May 3, 2021 - In days gone by, there wasn’t much about an airport experience that was unique. An airport in Albuquerque looked much the same as the airport in Charlotte. These days, however, airports around the world have adopted a passenger experience and culture that mirrors and highlights the uniqueness of the cities in which they are located.

Local products are sold in stores, restaurants you would find around town have set up shop in the airport and art and cultural activities feature local scenery and resident artists from across the creative spectrum, from musicians to painters to sculptors.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is no different. As soon as you arrive in Charlotte and get off your plane or arrive at the security check in, we want you to know you are in Charlotte and we want you to have the opportunity to experience the things that make the Queen City so special.

Art has graced the walls of CLT, and sculpture has adorned Airport property for many years. Queen Charlotte, for whom the city and the Airport is named, has stood watch over CLT for more than a decade. Local pianists have tickled the ivory on the Atrium piano and unique installations connecting life to the airport have been around a long time too. Before the pandemic, anyway.

Then In 2020, the CLT Local campaign was launched to showcase those businesses and products that are born in North and South Carolina. This includes retail products, businesses exclusive to the Carolinas and businesses/concepts that began in the Carolinas and have expanded regionally and or nationally.

CLT Local began as an initiative to support Airport businesses. The program took on new meaning as Airport businesses found themselves struggling during a drop in business tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. But it will forever be a CLT program that highlights the businesses, products and people that make the Carolinas unique and fun.

Mar. 22, 2021 - In a unique partnership that came together in just a few days’ time, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the Aviation Department were at the epicenter of mass COVID vaccination efforts this month in North Carolina.

Led by Atrium Health, the vaccination clinic was held at the Airport March 17 and 18 and was aimed at transportation workers who have not missed a beat, or a day at work, since the pandemic began a year ago. They have worked tirelessly to keep CLT operating smoothly and serve passengers’ travel needs.

Airlines at CLT have been critical partners in the nation’s transportation network, shuttling not only people but emergency supplies, masks and, even vaccines, around the country. The Airport never closes.

When the opportunity arose to help thousands of Airport workers (as well as the community around us) get vaccinated for COVID-19, a team of dozens of Aviation employees moved quickly to help plan and coordinate the combination drive through and walkup vaccination clinic.

In all 300 volunteers helped so that nearly 5,000 people received their first of two vaccines. An on-site clinic was convenient for those working at the airport and it demonstrates the power of teamwork and communicates a strong message: if you want a vaccine, we want to make it easy for you to get it. It’s an important next step in helping the travel and tourism industry bounce back from months of lackluster business.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport has been luckier than most. As American Airlines’ second largest connecting hub airport, CLT has benefitted from the power and strength of the airline’s business model during the pandemic. CLT has remained busy. That’s been shocking to many passengers who board a flight at a smaller, mostly deserted airport and land in Charlotte where it takes determination to social distance while navigating the terminal.

CLT has been fortunate and owes a big thanks to its passengers and partners for helping us keep the airport safe for everyone. In late 2020 the U.S. Surgeon General connected through CLT and tweeted that he was impressed that CLT passengers were following CDC guidance by masking up.  

We also owe thanks to Atrium Health for partnering with the Aviation Department, City of Charlotte and American Airlines on the clinic. In two weeks, everyone who received their first shots will return to the Airport for the second round of vaccinations.

Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Stay 6 feet away from people.

No big gatherings for Thanksgiving. Stay home.

What’s a person to do?

Charlotte Douglas International Airport and all its partners have worked tirelessly for the last eight months to create a safe and healthy Airport and to give passengers the confidence to fly. You can read about everything that has been done on the Keep it Rockin’ website. Your airline has also published a lot of great information on its web sites as well.

Ultimately, it is up to you, the customer, to decide if you are comfortable to fly. If you are, there are things we want you to plan for.

CLT is busy

CLT is so busy that people are often caught off guard by the crowds. They expect empty boarding gates and concourses. Amid the pandemic, CLT is averaging more than 1,000 daily arrivals and departures and 2.4 million passengers a month. Daily we see crowds at the checkpoints, in the Atrium and at the boarding gates.

Please remember you will not be coming to an empty Airport. Whether starting travels here or connecting to a flight bound for another destination, passengers should be prepared with plans aimed at your safety.

CLT airlines have consolidated their operations to be more efficient over the last eight months. Yet, each day more than 1,000 flights arrive and depart from CLT. Those flights serve 21,053 originating passengers daily. Another 116,396 people arrive at CLT to connect to another flight. That’s a lot of hustle and bustle, especially as flights arrive and depart in clusters.

CLT is fortunate to have its strong partnership with American Airlines. As CLT largest airline and American’s second largest hub, CLT has weathered the downtown in travel caused by the pandemic better than some airports. That means we can be here to serve the flying public.

Take personal responsibility

We strongly encourage people to do the right thing and adhere to the CDC directives and public health department guidance.

On Nov. 23, the North Carolina governor revised its Executive Order regarding masks. Anyone age 5 and up at Charlotte Douglas International Airport must wear a face mask, with limited medical exceptions.

In addition, the new Order allows law enforcement to enforce face covering mandates against anyone who refuses to wear one. Since June, face coverings have been required at CLT throughout all parts of the passenger journey - from the parking lots and shuttle bus rides to the check in at the terminal and boarding aircraft.  All airlines at CLT require passengers to wear face coverings to board a flight.

The Airport continues to educate our customers, tenants and employees regarding Governor Copper’s face covering mandate to help stop the spread of COVID-19, while meeting our mission to assist our customers in their travels.  Executive Order 180 allows law enforcement the ability to issue citations, giving CMPD an additional tool to use.  These citations could carry a fine up to $1,000. We remain focused on creating an environment of education and safety.  Messaging is on CLT’s public address system that airs throughout the terminal reminding passengers that face coverings are required.  We also have messaging and signage regarding the face covering mandate on roadways entering the airport, our entrance doors and on the terminal’s visual screens. 

We routinely remind people of safety guidance. Signage is located throughout the terminal and messages routinely play over the public address system. We also offer a free mask to anyone in need at the Visitor Info Center in Baggage Claim as at each security checkpoint podiums. And, we have 60+ hand sanitizing units located throughout the Airport.

Some airlines are blocking seats in their gate areas. The Aviation Department has not required it so that families and others who have quarantined together can sit together. Blocked seating would further complicate the challenges of a crowded airport. We have adjusted Atrium seating and lines to dining to encourage social distancing. And, our Keep It Rockin’s signage serves as a reminder to keep 6 feet apart, wear a mask and wash hands frequently.

We rely on our customers to take the lead in protecting themselves and others. We’ve also offered our own tips on how to create distance in a crowded terminal.  We don’t have more space to offer, but we can offer space awareness.

Committed to safety for all

Cleaning is a daily priority.

ABM, our commercial janitorial service, has nearly 300 employees who work full-time seven days in shifts that range from 35 to nearly 75 people. Things you touch often - handrails, touch screens, seat arms etc. – get a lot of attention from the cleaning teams. The third shift focuses on deep cleaning and uses electrostatic spray with cleansing agents designed to combat COVID-19 to clean the terminal’s public areas.

Daily, the cleaning crews go through 128 microfiber cloths, 1,050 pairs of gloves, 192 Blue Huck super absorbent towels and gallons of cleaning solutions.

Expect a crowd when you fly with CLT this holiday season

Sept. 8, 2020 - It’s hard to social distance anywhere. But in a busy, crowded airport it can feel impossible. You have told us as much. We’ve seen it and experienced it too. We have come up with some tips on how to social distance when flying in or out or connecting through Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Take up space.

Before COVID-19, it was considered polite to take up as little space as possible when flying. Keep your carry-on bag close to you. Hold your handbag or backpack so the seat next to you is available for another passenger. On your flight, pick one armrest and leave the other for the person next to you.

We know it’s tight in some places in the terminal, the boarding areas especially. Airlines have consolidated flights. Multiple flights board and leave at about the same time. That can make the Airport feel crowded, even though fewer people are traveling than in the past.

Since we all are supposed to stay 6 feet apart, we now suggest you take up space:

If able, put your backpack or carry-on in front of or in the seat next to you. For reference, two seats between you and the next person is 5 feet. Three seats equal 7 feet.
While sitting, stretch your legs out in front of you. Please don’t block a walking path or pose a trip hazard, especially if it’s crowded. The idea is to take up more room than you normally would to create space.
Stand or walk with your carry-on stretched in front of or behind you. Using your luggage as a shield adds space and will help signal to others to keep their distance.
Walk. Yes, get your steps in while you are in the terminal. If you are moving, people will naturally move out of the way or you can move around the crowds.
Because social distancing can be tricky, always wear a face covering for added protection. A June executive order from the North Carolina governor means everyone is required to wear a face mask in the Airport. Your airline already requires you to have one on when you enter the terminal and during your flight.

Be last, not first.

Happens all the time. The airline announces that families with children and those who need extra time can begin boarding and the rest of us rush to line up. It’s going to be 15 minutes or more before we can get on board, but by golly, we are getting in line.

Rather than rush to stand in line (next to someone who might be standing too close), wait. Let others board first while you stand back from the crowd. Sit or stand in adjacent or vacant boarding areas while you wait. Look for quiet spots out of the way, sit or stand and take up space.  Your flight won’t leave without you. Just stay close enough to monitor the line to board.

Look for a quiet spot to hang out.

We know we told you the Airport is busy and crowded but there are places you are likely to find quiet and space. Here are our suggestions:

The mezzanine above the Atrium and Food Court has rocking chairs and benches. It can be busy but there is often room to spread out.
The second story in the new A Concourse Expansion. It’s rarely busy, and you can grab a Starbucks while you are up there. It overlooks the boarding area so it’s easy to see when the crowds have dissipated.
The nook along the new A Concourse walkway is a large open space that also overlooks the ramp where aircraft park.
Explore the more than 80 open concessions. If you are moving, it’s easier to create space for yourself.
You and your traveling companions can visit the selfie stations outside 1897 Market near the entrance to Concourse B (Charlotte Postcard) and in the seating nook along the hallway to Gates A 21-29.
Pack a snack.

Frugal travelers have been bringing food through airport checkpoints for years.

You can avoid lines if you bring your own snacks. Food can be brought through the security checkpoint, though, in most cases, it must be screened separately from your luggage. Liquids in excess of 3.4 ounces are still prohibited, but an empty water bottle is allowed. Fill it at a touchless hydration station on the other side.  

Now, of course, we want you to support the Airport concessions. Many are small, local businesses working hard to recover from the pandemic’s impact. But if the thought of standing in line for something to eat is a little too much to bear right now because of COVID, bring something with you. We want your business, but we also want you to feel safe and confident in your decision to fly.

Keep it Rockin’ – Yes, it’s possible to social distance here

Aug. 25, 2020 - It’s hard to see everything that is being done to keep CLT clean so passengers can have the confidence to fly again. We cannot say “thank you” enough to the teams of people overseeing the cleaning effort and those on the terminal floor working hard 24 hours a day for our passengers.

But we try every day to remember to express gratitude. From the multiple cleanings to all the people it involves, a lot of hard work, elbow grease and dedication goes into cleanliness at the Airport.

ABM, our commercial janitorial service, has nearly 300 employees who work full-time throughout the week to keep the CLT terminal clean. Working in shifts that range from 35 people to nearly 75 people, they clean 24 hours a day. The third shift focuses on deep cleaning and uses electrostatic spray to clean the public areas of the terminal. The spray is essentially an electrically charged mist sprayed over an area to help better disinfect hard to reach places. Their work is easier to do overnight when there are fewer people in the terminal.

Daily, the cleaning crews go through 128 microfiber cloths, 1,050 pairs of gloves and 192 Blue Huck super absorbent towels.

The health and safety of our customers and the nearly 20,000 people who work in the Airport have always been important to us. Even more so now because of COVID-19. Crews are focused on daily cleanings and deep cleanings but due to COVID-19, they give extra attention to high touch points like seats and handrails. A team of six dedicated to deep cleaning and disinfecting high touch points can be found sporting blue, reflective vests as they work. They, along with other cleaning staff, also make sure to wear masks and gloves and follow COVID-19 guidelines as they work.

ABM also manages housekeeping in the many buildings and offices that support CLT and the Aviation Department, part of the City of Charlotte, which owns the Airport.

Wear a face covering. It’s required by a governor’s mandate in North Carolina and airlines require them to board a flight.
Social distance by maintaining six feet of space from others
We are asking our customers and employees to do their part. Each person’s travel needs and experiences are going to be different. But working together we can keep the Airport safe for everyone.

What uses 128 microfiber cloths, 2,100 gloves and 192 super absorbent towels?

Jul. 17, 2020 - We know it’s inconvenient. It’s uncomfortable. And, this time of year it’s darn hot. But we need our passengers, visitors, contractors and employees to help us provide a safe and healthy Airport environment.

Medical studies and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are clear on one point – the chances of spreading the coronavirus through coughing, sneezing, talking or raising your voice are greatly reduced when we wear our masks and keep at least six feet apart when around people not part of our household or quarantine group. According to the CDC, this recommendation is based on what is known about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows cloth face coverings reduce the spray of droplets.

So, your mask protects me, and my mask protects you. Wearing a face covering also helps protect others in case one of us is infected, but don’t show symptoms.

Right Thing the Right Way

There is a right and wrong way to wear a mask.

Right: Put it over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin. Make sure the mask fits snugly on the sides of your face.

Wrong: Worn under your nose, covering only your mouth or worn under your chin, around your neck or on your forehead. 

The CDC has a lot of helpful information on how to wear a mask, how to make one yourself and how to wash and care for a cloth mask.

It’s a State Requirement 

The governor of North Carolina has directed that face coverings be worn in public statewide until further notice. There are some exceptions. Among them are children under age 2 and anyone who has trouble breathing.

Can you be arrested? For simply not wearing a mask, the answer is no. But if you aren’t wearing one when you come to the Airport, reconsider – if not for you, then for others around you.

If you are asked by someone in the Airport to wear one, please do the right thing and put your mask on. You are going to have to wear it on the plane. All our airlines require it and could refuse boarding to anyone who does not wear a mask.

We’ve Got You Covered

Don’t have a mask or forgot it? Your airline can provide one. In addition, we have them available at the Visitor Info Center on the lower level in Baggage Claim. This is where most passengers enter the terminal from the shuttles and parking lots. In addition, the TSA has masks available at the check-in podiums, and you can purchase masks and other supplies like hand sanitizer and gloves at many of the retails stores after security.

We’re glad to see passengers coming back. We are working hard to make the Airport safe so you can travel in confidence. We need your help – please wear a mask. It’s the right thing to do.

Jul. 17, 2020 - Throughout the pandemic, a group of workers considered essential to keeping CLT open and operating have been the boots on the ground at CLT.

Hundreds of workers - from airline employees, concessions operators, screening professionals, security officers and baggage handlers - have continued with their duties during the pandemic. Many have been at the forefront of efforts to make the Airport safer and give passengers the confidence to fly again when they are ready.

Travel is different now and Charlotte Douglas International Airport is committed to our focus on implementing safety measures and continually adapting to the ever-changing travel experience. That starts with our front-line workers.

We talked to several in the Aviation Department, which operates the Airport for the City of Charlotte, to see how their work has been affected and how they have adapted.

Shuttle bus drivers

These men and women are often the first people our passengers see when they arrive at CLT.

“Staying safe and keeping spirits up are a big part of a driver's job every day. Now it’s even more important with the uncertainty of COVID-19,” said shuttle bus driver Ebony Leach.

When the shuttle buses are not transporting passengers, they are in our Fleet Maintenance shop for upkeep and for cleaning. Buses are cleaned after each shift and get a nightly deep clean with an electrostatic sprayer.

“We have a lot of gratitude for all of the front-line employees and all the essential employees,” said Samantha Singh, assistant landside manager.

Engineers and Planners

The team of planners and engineers in the Aviation Development overseeing Airport construction and capital projects that are often seen by the public, and in many cases have continued during the pandemic.  “I hope leading by example has a big influence,” said Jeff McSwain, director of engineering. “They see that we are being proactive and hopefully that will help resolve some of their fears.”

Dennis Irska, a senior airport architect, along with others on the planning side, has been working to find ways to modify the Airport to further prevent COVID-19 spread. “We’re looking at making the Airport as touchless as possible.”

Facilities Maintenance and Security

At the forefront of keeping things running at the airport 24/7 and one of Aviation’s largest work groups is Airfield Maintenance, Building Maintenance, Fleet Maintenance and Logistics and Facilities Services.

These men and women keep the air conditioning on in the terminal, keep our fleet of vehicles in good operating condition, mow the airfield and maintain the airfield facilities like the taxiways and runways so it is safe for planes to fly. Even in the early days of the pandemic, the Airport was open and people were flying. That meant our facilities maintenance people were on the job 24/7.

“Even if we completely close down and there were no airlines at the Airport, we would still have to have people here,” said Chris Hazen, the Facilities Maintenance Division director.

Fewer passengers have led to fewer security issues but no one lets their guard down. Keeping the Airport safe is the No. 1 priority in normal times and during a pandemic.

 “It doesn’t matter if there’s one person in the Airport or 40,000, it’s all the same rules,” said Renee Tufts, security operations manager. “It’s business as usual keeping our patrols up, compliance measures in check for the Airport security program and keeping the badging and access control system going.”

Airport’s essential workers go above and beyond during pandemic

May 29, 2020 - We understand some people must travel: Nurses and doctors are volunteering in hard-hit communities. Some business travel can no longer be delayed. And even some personal travel can only be put off for so long. We are working hard to keep you safe while you are at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, but we are also relying on you to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Please take precautions for yourself, fellow travelers, and our employees.

Arrive Early

First realize that it’s as important as ever that you arrive early. Do not assume fewer travelers means shorter wait times. TSA recommends you arrive at the Airport two hours before your domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

Procedure changes and staff reductions aimed at reducing potential exposure to the virus can result in wait times equal to or longer than a busy, pre-COVID-19 day. Checkpoint wait times and the number of open checkpoints will vary, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time before your flight. 

Follow CDC Guidelines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the best way to prevent the illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. Here are some of the CDC’s tips for staying virus-free and our advice (in italics) for how to put those tips to work in an airport environment.

Keep Your Distance

Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other people whenever possible
Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus
Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings
Whether you are waiting to go through security, board your flight or grab a cup of coffee, you should try to keep 6 feet between yourself and the nearest person whenever you can. If you can’t social distance, wear a face covering. Stand back further than you normally would when speaking with security screeners and, gate agents, for example, and only hand them your documents if they ask. Some of our partners have installed floor stickers to help with social distancing. If you see them, please use them.

If buying concessions or waiting in any line, leave plenty of space between yourself and the customer ahead of you and then try to pay with a card, if possible, so that you and the employee don’t have to handle cash.

We’ve adjusted our parking lots, so that most who arrive by car can walk directly to the terminal. If you do use one of our shuttle buses, leave a seat between yourself and the nearest passenger. If the bus seems crowded, wait for the next one. We’ve got buses running more frequently so another will be along soon.

Cover Your Face

Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they go out in public
Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
Unlike restaurants and other private facilities, the Airport is unable to limit the number of people allowed inside at one time. This can create challenges with social distancing and makes the use of face coverings even more important.

All airlines serving Charlotte Douglas International Airport either strongly encourage or are mandating passengers wear face coverings in the terminal, at ticket counters, in boarding areas and onboard their aircraft. Additionally, Aviation Department employees are now required to wear a face covering and many of our partners have implemented similar policies for their employees.

Clean your hands often

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Once you leave the Airport and get back to your car or home, wash again.

Important Note: You can bring a 12-ounce container of liquid hand sanitizer through security in your carry-on bag! TSA announced the exception will be made “until further notice.”

If surfaces are dirty, clean them. Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
We’ve got this one! The Airport is following CDC guidance. Our staff has increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting and is conducting routine deep-cleaning of shuttle buses and inside the terminal at security checkpoints and other high-touch areas including hand rails, people movers, restrooms, seating, and arm rests. Seriously, our cleaning staff is on it!

We also have increased the number of hand sanitizing stations in the terminal and are using electrostatic spray surface cleaning where appropriate. However, if you have the supplies, it doesn’t hurt to wipe down an area before you sit or use a napkin or paper towel to open a door or grab a railing.

Airport employees have been instructed to stay home if they are sick – and we hope that you will do the same.

We are using digital messaging boards and our public address system to provide reminders to those in the terminal. We all play a role in stopping the spread of this virus. We are all in this together!

Safe Travels Part 2: Top 7 things passengers can do to fly safely

May 8, 2020 - During tough times, communities and people rally. It’s what we do.

It is no different at Charlotte Douglas International Airport where the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way the Airport operates and forced our many business partners to do the same.

Airport businesses, their employees and everyone dependent on CLT for their travel needs has had to grapple with the pandemic’s affects. Fewer people flying has led to cancelled flights. Fewer customers for the more than 100 Airport businesses has forced our partners to rethink their roles. Many Airport businesses have had to close. All have furloughed or laid off workers.

Despite that, two CLT companies are rallying to give back to the community.

HMSHost, our food and beverage concessionaire, and American Airlines, CLT’s largest air carrier, are helping to feed people so that providing meals is one less thing to worry about during these difficult times.

“The food donation program at CLT was born from a grassroots effort in our operations. A group of associates wanted to make a positive difference during these tough times,” said Antonio Tillery, senior director of HMSHost at CLT. “Fresh, ready-to-eat food not only benefits the Airport’s sustainability efforts, but, most importantly, helps feed the local community, including our very own associates and airport colleagues who have been affected by this devastating pandemic.”

Team members at American Airlines hosted a food drive at the Airport over a seven-day period and collected more than $10,000 worth of food that was donated to Camino Community Center, a Charlotte non-profit in need. With the help of HMS Host, American was also able to donate much needed perishable items that are sold in limited supplies in grocery stores.

Over the next few weeks, volunteers from American are spending their Fridays at Camino packing boxes and distributing food items to the center’s clients.

HMSHost has a record of community food connections, to include sourcing products and ingredients used in Airport restaurants from local businesses and farmers. Since the pandemic began in March, HMSHost:

- partnered with Paradies Lagardère, the Airport’s retail concessionaire, on a food drive for concessions’ associates. Furloughed employees were given bags of food and beverages.
- opened its restaurant 1897 Market a couple of times a week. The HMSHost Market offers various food items for sale at cost to all employees in the airport. The market has included hard-to-find items such as gloves, toilet paper, eggs, and flour.
- donated over 1,000 sandwiches and pastries to West Blvd Ministries. This group partners with several food banks in the area and makes sure that donations get to those in need.
- donated pallets of pastries to the Myers Park United Methodist Church food donation program to be distributed throughout Charlotte
- donated over 1,000 sandwiches and pastries to Atrium Health University and Atrium Health Pineville to help support the hardworking staff that is keeping our city safe and healthy.
- provided associates with a free meal while they are at work and a free meal to take home daily. This ensures they have something to eat when they leave the airport
- “Right now, people are stretched to their limits and so are food banks trying to help those in need.” Tillery said. “The HMSHost CLT team’s resourcefulness to provide food assistance during this unprecedented time is needed now more than ever and HMSHost is proud to provide this outpouring of support.”

Two Airport partners rallying to give back to community

Mar. 31, 2020 - We know some of you are still traveling. Nurses and doctors are volunteering in hard-hit communities. College students and others who were away when the pandemic started may still be trying to get home to loved ones. And some business travel can’t be delayed. We are working hard to keep you safe while you are at the Airport and we are asking you to do the same for yourself, fellow travelers, and our employees.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created a webpage with guidance for travelers and the latest information related to the virus. While the information about protecting yourself from COVID-19 is not specific to those traveling through airports, it can easily be applied.

Of course, the best way to stay healthy is to avoid exposure to COVID-19. Here are some of the CDC’s tips for staying virus-free and our advice (in italics) for how to put those tips to work in an airport environment.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Put distance between yourself and other people.
Whether you are waiting to go through security, board your flight or grab a cup of coffee, you should try to keep six feet between yourself and the nearest person whenever you can. It likely won’t be as hard as it sounds because the crowds are smaller, and everyone should have the same goal. Stand back further than you normally would when speaking with security screeners, gate agents, etc. and only hand them your documents if they ask. If buying concessions, leave plenty of space between yourself and the customer ahead of you and then try to pay with a card, if possible, so that you and the employee don’t have to handle cash.
