CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will implement increased daily maximum parking rates across its lots and decks beginning March 1. The updated pricing reflects rising operational costs and shifting demand, while allowing the airport to reinvest in parking facilities to enhance safety, infrastructure, reliability and the overall passenger experience. Even with the adjustment, CLT remains among the most affordable hub airports for parking. The last rate change came in November 2023. 

“We know parking is an important part of the travel experience, and we’re committed to making it as convenient and dependable as possible,” said Ted Kaplan, CLT Chief Business and Innovation Officer. “These adjustments allow us to continue investing in our parking facilities while maintaining competitive rates, and our focus remains on safety, reliability and a positive customer experience.”

CLT is seeing a shift toward more local passenger traffic, with approximately 35% of passengers now originating their trips in Charlotte and 65% connecting through the airport. As an enterprise fund of the City of Charlotte, the Airport is financially self-sufficient and does not collect local tax dollars.

- __Daily Deck__ – $28 ($20) *Pre-book only*
- __Express Deck Preferred__ – $24 (no change) *Pre-book only*
- __Express Deck Self-Park__ – $24 ($20) *Pre-book only*
- __Daily North__ – $18 ($14) *Drive-up only*
- __Long Term 1__ – $14 ($12) *Pre-book only*

Except for Valet parking, all lots and decks are free for the first 15 minutes.

Passengers are strongly encouraged to reserve parking online in advance. Of the Airport’s 25,000 parking spots, approximately 16,000 are available for online booking. The Royalty Program allows travelers to earn rewards with points earned by booking CLT Airport parking online at parkCLT.com or on the CLT Airport app. Currently, over 250,000 passengers are enrolled in the Royalty Program and approximately 65% of all parking is reserved online.

Airport Parking Rates to Increase March 1

__Local Departures Expected to Climb on Friday and in the Two Days After Christmas__

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is gearing up for the winter holiday travel season, Dec. 16, 2025, to Jan. 4, 2026. Over these 20 days, CLT expects around 2.7 million passengers to arrive and depart, down 13% from the same period last year, with 630,000 travelers beginning their trip in Charlotte, about a 5% decrease from last year.

The heaviest local departure volumes are anticipated on Dec. 19 and Dec. 26–27, while overall travel activity is expected to peak from Dec. 26–28. To provide extra support, the Aviation Department will have additional staff wearing bright yellow vests to help guide and assist travelers.

The total number of flights is projected to reach 27,600, reflecting a 6% decrease from 2024.

Passengers can be picked up on either the upper or lower level, which helps ease congestion and maintain steady traffic flow.

CLT Airport Prepares for Winter Holiday Traffic

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport is preparing for a busy travel period this Thanksgiving season — and a milestone one at that — the first Thanksgiving since CLT completed its $608-million Terminal Lobby Expansion Project. Local passengers will be welcomed with more space, a brighter, more seamless entry into the Airport, and expanded security checkpoints with additional lanes.

This Thanksgiving, Airport forecasts are predicting approximately 1.9 million passengers to arrive and depart between Thursday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Dec. 2 — roughly 10% below last year’s record-setting volume. Nearly 430,000 travelers are anticipated to move through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, a 2.5% dip from 2024.

The busiest days are expected to be Saturday, Nov. 29, Sunday, Nov. 30, and Monday, Dec. 1. Each day is projected to see over 83,000 departing passengers, with Sunday, Nov. 30, anticipated to be the busiest, welcoming more than 178,000 total travelers. Overall, more than 9,000 aircraft departures are scheduled throughout this period. CLT officials continue to work closely with airline and federal partners, including TSA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to stay as informed and responsive as needed. CLT Airport Welcomes Travelers for Thanksgiving Holiday

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport marked a major milestone today in the Destination CLT portfolio, celebrating the [Terminal Lobby Expansion](https://www.cltairport.com/news/construction-projects/terminal-lobby-expansion/) (TLE), the largest passenger-facing construction project in Airport history. The celebration comes ahead of the project’s substantial completion date, set for Oct. 1.

The crown-jewel of the Airport’s Destination CLT capital investment program, the five-year project increased the lobby space by 175,000 square feet and renovated another 191,000 square feet. Originally opened May 2, 1982, the terminal was designed to serve approximately 2.8 million passengers annually. In 2024, CLT saw a record 58.8 million travelers, with 18 million—31% of total passengers—using the terminal lobby for arrivals and departures.

“The Terminal Lobby Expansion is a transformational milestone for CLT,” said Haley Gentry, CEO of Charlotte Douglas International Airport. “This monumental effort represents years of planning, construction and commitment to improving the passenger experience. We sincerely thank our passengers for their patience and support throughout this process. The result is a modern, spacious lobby that reflects the dynamic growth of our region and positions us for the future.”

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held on Dec. 10, 2019, and construction started after the holiday season. The timeline stayed on schedule despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed in six phases to minimize disruptions to passengers and maintain efficient operations.

The TLE was the final development of a coordinated three-project construction effort that began with the Hourly Parking Deck, followed by the Elevated Roadway and Terminal Curb Front. The Hourly Deck debuted in 2015, which provided room to widen the roadway. After the Elevated Roadway was completed in 2019, construction began on the lobby. The inner three lanes on the Departures/Ticketing level were used to support construction and opened to motorists on Nov. 13, 2024.

__Key Features of the Terminal Lobby Expansion Include:__
- Expanded and renovated basement, baggage claim, and ticketing levels
- 146,000-square-foot canopy sheltering passengers from the elements
- Two pedestrian bridges link the mezzanine to the Hourly Deck, and two underground walkways allow passengers to bypass upper and lower-level terminal roadway traffic
- Addition of pre-security concessions offering more food and beverage options
- [11 public art installations](https://www.cltairport.com/airport-info/airport-art/art-installations-terminal/) commissioned in partnership with the Arts & Science Council
- Four Automated Exit Lanes providing a quick and seamless way to exit the secure area
- Eight high-capacity baggage devices that improve efficiency
- Consolidation from five lettered Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints to three numbered ones, increasing lanes from 17 to 21, including 11 Automated Screening Lanes 

The anchor in the heart of the building is the Queen Charlotte statue, an airport landmark since 1990. Created by artist Raymond Kaskey, the 16-foot, 3,000-pound bronze sculpture stands atop a 46-foot plinth in Queens Court, a large open area on the baggage claim level that symbolically welcomes travelers to the Queen City. Across from the statue is The Queen’s Kitchen, CLT’s first full-service restaurant outside of the secure area. 

Originally located in the Queen’s Courtyard between the old Hourly Parking Decks, she was relocated between the Daily Decks in 2013 during construction. The statue was moved in October 2020 for restoration work at Carolina Bronze in Seagrove, North Carolina. She returned to the Airport in June 2021 and protected from construction in a specially built structure. She was officially unveiled on Oct. 20, 2023.

With an estimated cost of approximately $608 million, the TLE was made possible through funding from a combination of Passenger Facility Charge Revenues, Customer Facility Charge Revenues, General Airport Revenue Bonds and Airport Cash. As a city enterprise fund, the Airport is self-sustaining and does not collect tax dollars. Airport revenue pays for all capital and operating costs.

Charlotte City Council approved the construction contract on Oct. 28, 2019.   Construction was carried out by Holder-Edison Foard-R.J.Leeper, a joint venture, and Gresham Smith produced the architectural design. 

With the opening of Concourse A – Phase II last September and the Terminal Lobby Expansion, the Airport’s total square footage grew from 1.8 million to 2.4 million.

CLT Celebrates Terminal Lobby Expansion Ahead of Completion

__CHARLOTTE, NC__ – As Labor Day closes out the summer travel season, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is gearing up for a bustling holiday weekend with thousands of travelers making their final summer escapes. 

From Thursday, Aug. 28, to Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Airport is preparing for an estimated 204,000 passengers passing through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints — representing a 2.4% decrease compared to the record-breaking 2024 Labor Day weekend, but an almost 14% increase above the previous record-setting 2023. Nationwide, TSA expects to screen more than 17.3 million passengers and crew over the Labor Day weekend. 

In total, CLT forecasts over 856,000 passengers during the holiday period, marking a 6.6% decrease from the same time last year, but consistent with 2023.

The project adds 175,000 square feet of new space and renovates 191,000 square feet of existing space. 

- In 2025, CLT has welcomed seven new food, beverage and retail offerings – bringing the total to 149.

CLT Prepares for Labor Day Weekend Travel 

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport has been named the most financially efficient airport in North America for the third year in a row, based on 2023 data and airports serving more than 40 million passengers, according to the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), a leading academic research organization in the air transportation industry.

“To be recognized again by ATRS affirms the core of what we strive for every day: to connect the world by valuing people, partnerships and productivity and to be the hub of choice with innovative experiences and superior facilities,” said CLT Chief Financial Officer Mike Hill. “We are honored to accept this award and grateful for the continued recognition of our financial model, one that has proven resilient through economic cycles and the evolving aviation landscape.”

The award, announced July 3 in Hong Kong, is the result of the ATRS Global Airport Performance Benchmarking Task Force’s year-long research into several important aspects of operations, including productivity, efficiency, cost competitiveness and financial results. The group studies 205 airports and 24 airport groups of various sizes and ownership forms in Asia Pacific, Europe and North America.

CLT’s reputation for sound financial management is also reflected in its consistently strong bond ratings, which helps the airport secure favorable financing for infrastructure projects that support its rapid growth and operational efficiency. CLT is nearing completion of Destination CLT, a multi-billion-dollar expansion program intended to support increased passenger traffic, modernize the airport's facilities and enhance passenger experience.

Charlotte Douglas ranks the sixth busiest airport worldwide for arrivals and departures and seventh in North America for passengers according to the Airports Council International (ACI) 2024 preliminary rankings. Globally, passenger traffic ranks 23rd.  CLT’s sixth place position for takeoffs and landings reflects an 11% increase in aircraft operations, rising from 539,066 in 2023 to 596,583 in 2024.

CLT Named Most Financially Efficient Airport for Third Consecutive Year

CHARLOTTE, NC – Effective July 1, Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Fixed Based Operator (FBO) Terminal will be managed by Modern Aviation and rebranded as the CLT Executive Terminal. This transition signals the beginning of a new chapter in private aviation at CLT in partnership with Modern Aviation – an FBO network recognized for its exceptional safety standards, customer service and upscale amenities.

Modern Aviation will take over CLT’s general aviation services, succeeding Wilson Air Center’s two decades of award-winning customer service. General aviation services refer to the range of support and operations provided for non-commercial aircraft, including corporate jets and privately-owned planes. 

To ensure a smooth transition, all existing employees were offered positions with Modern Aviation, and the majority accepted roles within the organization. Modern Aviation and the local on-site team are committed to maintaining and enhancing superior customer and stakeholder experiences. As part of the agreement, Modern Aviation will begin renovating the CLT Executive Terminal sometime in the next year.

Founded in 2018, Modern Aviation currently operates 18 FBOs across North America and the Caribbean, with Charlotte marking its 19th location. Charlotte City Council unanimously approved the 10-year contract with the option to extend to 20 years on Feb. 10.

Modern Aviation will manage the CLT operation that includes 220,000 square feet of hangar space and 100,000 square feet of office space. In 2024, the FBO supported 28,700 takeoffs and landings, making it one of the busiest general aviation operations in the United States.

CLT Launches Future-Focused General Aviation Terminal with Modern Aviation

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport is preparing for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, which is expected to draw a steady flow of travelers taking advantage of the Friday holiday. While passenger volumes are forecasted to be slightly lower than last year, CLT encourages travelers to plan ahead and use all available travel tools to help ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

From Thursday, July 3 through Tuesday, July 8, CLT expects 925,000 passengers to travel through the Airport—a 2.5% decrease compared to the same period last year. The busiest travel days are projected to be Thursday, July 3; Sunday, July 6; and Monday, July 7. Nationwide, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expecting to screen over 18.5 million passengers during the holiday.

Summer travel kicked off over Memorial Day weekend, spanning Thursday, May 22, through Tuesday, May 27. During that period, CLT saw 993,700 arriving and departing passengers—a 7% decrease compared to the same time last year. The busiest travel days at TSA checkpoints were Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23, with more than 40,000 people screened.

For the first five months of 2025, CLT’s total passenger count was 22.2 million, an 8.4% decrease from last year’s record-setting numbers.

To help passengers prepare, CLT offers the following travel tips:
- Passengers should reserve parking online in advance. Of the Airport’s 25,000 parking spots, 15,000 are available for online booking. The Royalty Program allows travelers to earn rewards with points earned by booking CLT Airport parking online at parkCLT.com or on the CLT Airport app.
- Consider alternate routes in case of traffic congestion. Use a navigation app to avoid trouble spots.
- Plan to reach your parking space thirty minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal.
- Be inside the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.
- REAL ID enforcement began May 7 – Visit tsa.gov for up-to-date guidance on prohibited items and screening procedures. All concourses and aircraft gates are accessible from any security checkpoint.

CLT Airport Ready to Welcome Fourth of July Travelers

__CHARLOTTE, NC__ – Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is gearing up for the upcoming summer travel season. Memorial Day weekend marks the official kickoff, and while this year’s passenger volume may be lighter than last, travelers should still prepare in advance for a seamless journey. 

Passenger numbers are projected to be 7% lower than summer of 2024. During the Memorial Day travel period—from Thursday, May 22 through Tuesday, May 27—CLT anticipates over 970,000 passenger arrivals and departures. That represents an 9% decrease compared to the same period last year. The busiest travel days are expected to be Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23.

CLT Prepares for Summer Travel Season

CHARLOTTE, NC – Beginning May 4, 2026, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) welcomes [Etihad Airways](https://www.etihad.com/en-us/), the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, as its fourth international carrier. 

Etihad will launch four weekly nonstop flights between Charlotte and Abu Dhabi (AUH), marking the airline's first direct service from North Carolina and expanding CLT's connectivity to the vibrant hub for business, culture and tourism in the Middle East. The route provides Charlotte passengers with one-stop access to destinations across the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Asia.

Flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays aboard Etihad’s state-of-the-art, 303-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring both Business and Economy cabins and offering award-winning service and amenities. It will mark the first scheduled service by a Boeing 787-9 aircraft in CLT Airport’s history.

Etihad Airways Begins CLT-Abu Dhabi Service in May 2026

__CHARLOTTE, N.C.__ – Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), along with its tenants and partners, will host an Airport Job Fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26, at Bojangles Coliseum, 2700 East Independence Boulevard

CLT Airport to Host Job Fair April 26 at Bojangles Coliseum

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) rose to sixth place worldwide for aircraft operations, up one spot from last year, and ranks seventh in North America for total passenger volume, moving up two spots, according to [Airports Council International’s (ACI) 2024 preliminary rankings](https://aci.aero/2025/04/14/the-busiest-airports-in-the-world-defy-global-uncertainty-and-hold-top-rankings/). The Airport also holds the 23rd position globally for passenger traffic, with final rankings to be released later this year.

“This ranking reflects CLT’s operational strength, the power of the American Airlines hub, and the dedication of our employees, airlines and terminal partners,” said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. “Record-breaking traffic in 2024 made it an ‘all in’ year, and our team rose to the challenge. We’re proud to be among the world’s top airports and remain focused on building for the future.”

CLT’s sixth place position for takeoffs and landings reflects an 11% increase in aircraft operations, rising from 539,066 in 2023 to 596,583 in 2024. The total exceeded global hubs Los Angeles International (LAX), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Istanbul (IST) and Guangzhou (CAN).

Maintaining its record-breaking momentum, CLT set a new all-time passenger record for the fifth time in eight years, welcoming 58.8 million travelers in 2024—a 10% uptick from the previous record of 53.4 million in 2023. 

International travel experienced a 13% surge, rising from 2.1 million passengers in 2023 to 2.4 million in 2024. Charlotte currently serves 42 international destinations and is home to three foreign flag carriers.

In 2025, CLT will continue making significant strides in its Destination CLT terminal projects. Construction on the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) is slated for completion later this year. The project added 175,000 square feet of new space and renovates 191,000 square feet of existing space. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint 2 [opened March 24](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/checkpoint-2-awaits-spring-break-travel/), completing the Airport’s transition from five lettered checkpoints to three numbered ones. The addition increased the total number of security screening lanes from 17 to 21 with enhanced technology.

The 200,000-square-foot Concourse A Expansion – Phase II opened Sept. 17, 2024. The project added 10 new gates and introduced a Delta Sky Club®.

On the airfield, the North End-Around Taxiway commissioned on Jan. 20. Construction of the new runway is in the early stages, with grading underway through mid-2026 and ongoing drainage and utility work. The $1 billion runway project is on track to open in fall 2027.

CLT Climbs to Sixth Busiest Airport in the World in ACI Preliminary Rankings

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is gearing up for Spring Break travelers, with many local schools scheduled to begin their breaks starting the afternoon of Friday, April 11, and continuing through Sunday, April 27. Passenger volumes are expected to be down by 4.6% compared to last year’s record-breaking volume, with an estimated 2.9 million arriving and departing passengers this year. More than 592,000 local passengers are projected to pass through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, which is a 3% decrease from 2024.

Peak days for total arriving and departing passengers are expected to be Friday, April 11, Sunday, April 13, and Sunday, April 27. Over 26,800 flights are expected during this period, which is slightly above last year’s totals.

"We encourage travelers to plan ahead, arrive early, and take advantage of the resources we’ve put in place to make their journey as smooth as possible,” said Jerome Woodard, Chief Operating Officer at CLT Airport.

- Rideshare staging - All rideshare services are now located on the inner lanes of the departures (upper) level for faster, easier access. Drivers in personal vehicles should continue using the outer lanes on both the upper and lower levels for drop off and pick up.
- Valet Parking – Valet passengers enjoy exclusive premium access to the terminal via a dedicated entrance on the east side of Level 1 in the Hourly Parking Deck.

CLT Airport Prepares for Spring Break Travel

__CHARLOTTE, NC__ – Just in time for Spring Break travelers, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will open Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint 2 for limited passenger screenings on Monday, March 24. It will become fully operational on Wednesday, March 26. Following its full opening, Checkpoint A will permanently close later that week.

Positioned at the center of the Terminal Lobby, Checkpoint 2 will be the main screening location for [TSA PreCheck®](https://www.tsa.gov/precheck) and flight crews. Employee lanes will be available at all three checkpoints. Launching the checkpoint completes the airport's plan to consolidate five lettered checkpoints into three numbered ones, while also expanding the total number of screening lanes. With the added screening lanes, TSA expects to process an additional 600 passengers per hour. All concourses and aircraft gates are accessible from any security checkpoint.

"The opening of Checkpoint 2 is a major milestone in the Terminal Lobby Expansion project, as streamlining security checkpoints from five to three while increasing capacity will provide passengers with a faster, more efficient screening experience," said Jack Christine, CLT’s Chief Infrastructure Officer.

More Terminal Lobby improvements are on the way, including the introduction of three additional Automated Exit Lanes in the Ticketing area and two new baggage carousels in Baggage Claim. Once completed, there will be eight high-capacity baggage devices, offering greater efficiency than the previous models.

The TLE project, slated for completion this fall, is transforming the terminal originally built in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million annual passengers. In 2024, CLT saw a record 58.8 million travelers, with 18 million—31% of total passengers—using the terminal lobby for arrivals and departures.

Transportation Security Administration Checkpoint 2 to Open March 24

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) contributed $40 billion to the economies of North and South Carolina in 2023, according to the study Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Economic Contribution: Supporting the Economic Vibrancy of North and South Carolina Communities. The study was conducted by the Institute for Transportation Research and Education at North Carolina State University.  

“CLT remains a critical economic force for the Carolinas, with the American Airlines hub playing a pivotal role generating jobs, boosting incomes and contributing to vital tax revenues,” said CLT CEO Haley Gentry. “We are committed to continuing to grow responsibly, support our local economies, while enhancing the airport experience for everyone who relies on us.”  

The report showed CLT served 53.45 million passengers in 2023 while supporting 184,400 jobs and $39.7 billion in economic output — with over 90% of jobs and 92% of output occurring within North Carolina. The remainder came from the South Carolina counties within the Charlotte region. The Airport commissioned the study to clarify the distinct impacts of CLT on the economies of the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.  

In January, the North Carolina Department of Transportation released its biannual report: The State of Aviation. It noted CLT’s economic output in North Carolina at $36.6 billion, generating $2.1 billion in tax revenue, $15.2 billion in personal income and 167,000 jobs.  CLT represents approximately 5% of North Carolina’s gross domestic product.  

CLT Airport serves as the second-largest hub for American Airlines, the world’s largest airline. In 2024, Charlotte Douglas set a record by welcoming 58.8 million passengers, a 10% increase from 2023.

CLT Generates $40 Billion in Economic Impact in North and South Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport welcomed 58.8 million arriving and departing passengers in 2024, marking a 10% increase from the previous record of 53.4 million set in 2023. The airport has set new passenger records in five of the last eight years, with 2020 to 2022 being the only exceptions.

International travel at CLT also saw a notable 13% increase, growing from 2.1 million passengers in 2023 to 2.4 million in 2024. The airport offers 42 international destinations.

Aircraft operations followed suit with a double-digit rise in 2024. Aircraft movements grew by 11%, reaching 596,583 arrivals and departures, up from 539,066 the previous year.

The majority of the nearly 59 million passengers are connecting, making up approximately 70% of the total. Local passengers spiked consistently throughout the year, with 23 of the 25 busiest days on record occurring in 2024. On May 16, the Airport set a record for the highest single-day local passenger count, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening 45,304 passengers. The top three busiest travel days for total passengers on record are May 24, Oct. 20 and Dec. 1, 2024.

“CLT remains one of the busiest and most efficient airports in the world,” said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. “Our record growth in 2024 reflects the dedication of our team, support of our partners and the trust of the passengers who continually choose CLT. We look forward to seeing how our investments in infrastructure, such as the Terminal Lobby Expansion, concourse upgrades and a new taxiway, will contribute to even greater success and enhance the travel experience for all passengers in 2025 and beyond.”

In 2025, significant progress is anticipated with the ongoing expansion of the Destination CLT terminal projects.  Construction on the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) which began in 2019, will wrap up later this year. The project added 175,000 square feet to the lobby and renovated 191,000 square feet of existing space. TSA Checkpoint 2 is set to open around Spring Break.

Renovations are progressing on Concourses D and E, including upgrades to the concourses' restrooms and terrazzo flooring. The Concourse D renovations are expected to be completed by the fall of 2026, while Concourse E is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2027.

Beyond the terminal, CLT is also making progress on the airfield. The North End Around Taxiway commissioned Jan. 20. Construction of the new runway is in the early stages. Grading will be underway through mid-2026 and approximately five million cubic yards of runway and taxiway fill remain to be placed. The $1 billion project is scheduled for a fall 2027 commissioning and opening.

CLT Breaks Passenger Record with 58.8 Million in 2024

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport has officially commissioned the North End Around Taxiway, which enhances connectivity between the west runway and the terminal ramp, boosting both safety and capacity at one of the busiest airports in the United States.

"The completion of the North End Around Taxiway is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the safety, efficiency, and capacity of our airfield," said CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine. "By reducing aircraft crossings on Runway 18C-36C and improving traffic flow, this project directly supports our growing demand and ensures we continue to operate at the highest standards."

As a vital part of the Airport's expansion and modernization efforts, the taxiway minimizes aircraft crossings on Runway 18C-36C, enhancing airfield safety and operational efficiency. It also provides additional queuing space for arriving flights, streamlining traffic flow on the central runway.

The project encompassed several enabling initiatives, such as relocating the Airport Overlook, rerouting a one-mile section of Old Dowd Road, permanently closing Marshall Drive, and building a new access road next to the Long Term 1 parking lot.

Construction began in April 2021, with a total cost of $253 million. The project was funded through a mix of Passenger Facility Charge revenues and federal grants.

Work continues on the fourth parallel runway, with drainage pipe installation and utility work in progress. Grading will be underway through mid-2026 and approximately five million cubic yards of runway and taxiway fill remain to be placed. Concrete paving begins this year and will wrap up in early 2027. The $1 billion project is scheduled for a fall 2027 commissioning and opening.

CLT Airport Commissions North End Around Taxiway

__Detours in Place for South End Around Taxiway Project__

CHARLOTTE, NC – Starting Jan. 3, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is continuing construction work associated with the South End Around Taxiway project and supporting infrastructure that requires a permanent closure of a portion of West Boulevard.

Due to construction, a small portion of West Boulevard from Piney Top Drive to Steele Creek Road will close and permanently realigned to make room for the new taxiway. This work is expected to take four months to complete. Crews will install necessary traffic signals in key areas to ensure the safe flow of traffic along detour routes. Detours, in place for local and through traffic, are as follows:

Local Traffic Detour: Use Byrum Drive to navigate between Steele Creek Road and Yorkmont Road.
Local Traffic Detour: Use Shopton Road to travel between Sandy Porter Road and Beam Road.
Extended Traffic Detour: Motorists traveling from further south should use W. Arrowood Road to access Sandy Porter Road and S. Tryon Street.
The South End Taxiway project, which is essential to CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway Program, aims to improve safety by eliminating crossings of the center runway.

__CLT Expecting Nearly 3 million Passengers__

CHARLOTTE, NC – The winter holiday travel season is set to take off at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Friday, Dec. 20, running through Sunday, Jan. 5. Passenger numbers are anticipated to surpass last year’s levels, with approximately 2.75 million arriving and departing passengers during the 17-day period. This represents a 6% increase from the same period last year. The peak local departure days are expected to be Friday, Dec. 20, Thursday, Dec. 26, and Friday, Dec. 27.

The total number of flights is projected to reach 25,000, reflecting an 8% increase from 2023. These figures align with industry trends, as airports and airlines across the country prepare for a record-breaking travel season. Analysts predict unprecedented passenger numbers and a surge in flight demand. To ensure smooth operations, CLT will deploy additional staff wearing bright yellow vests to assist and guide passengers.

Thanksgiving was the largest holiday crowd in CLT’s history. Approximately 990,000 passengers departed CLT Thursday, Nov. 21 - Monday, Dec. 2, a 4% increase from last year.

“We knew Thanksgiving was going to be busy and we were ready,” said CLT Chief Operating Officer Jerome Woodard. “Of all the improvements put into play for this year, the opening of the three inner roadway lanes at the departures level and the two pedestrian bridges significantly reduced roadway congestion during high-peak times. A special thank you to the passengers who followed our social media for real-time updates, and our airport stakeholder partners who worked to ensure a smooth travel experience for all."

Like Thanksgiving, during peak traffic periods the inner three lanes of the departures level roadway will open to all vehicles and Airport shuttle buses will pick up and drop off passengers on the Lower/Arrivals level. Passengers can be picked up on either the upper or lower level. CLT will closely monitor the situation and adjust as needed.

Winter Holiday Travel Season to See Surge in Passenger Traffic

CHARLOTTE, NC – The 17th annual Runway 5K raised its largest amount ever, $65,165, for [Airport Opportunity Scholarships](https://www.cpcc.edu/financial-aid/scholarships/opportunity-scholarship) at Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarships were created in 2018 to help promote careers in aviation as well as economic opportunities in Charlotte.

Since 2019, the Runway 5K has raised more than $226,000 in scholarship funds and provided a free college education for 20 local students. Of those 20 students, 11 have graduated and/or transferred to a four-year institution.

The scholarships support up to $10,000 per student and are awarded based on their need (cost of tuition/fees is based on class registration less any available financial aid). Recipients also receive a computer stipend of up to $1,200 per student. Any remaining encumbered funds are deployed back into the scholarship and awarded to future new scholars.

More than 1,300 runners and walkers participated in the Runway 5K on Oct. 19.  Chris Zuerner, 36, took first place for the men with a finishing time of 15:16. Runway 5K Raises Record $65,165 for College Scholarships

__CLT Projecting 7% Passenger Increase from 2023__

CHARLOTTE, NC – This Thanksgiving travel season is expected to be the busiest on record at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, with forecasts predicting approximately 1.02 million passengers departing CLT between Thursday, Nov. 21, and Monday, Dec. 2. This marks a 7% increase compared to last year and a 20% rise over pre-pandemic 2019.

Local traffic is also anticipated to reach new highs. The Airport estimates more than 423,000 passengers will pass through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints during the holiday period, a 9% jump from last year and 25% higher than 2019. TSA is projected to screen 18.3 million people nationwide from Tuesday, Nov. 26 to Monday, Dec. 2.

The busiest days will be Friday, Nov. 22, Wednesday, Nov. 27, Sunday, Dec. 1, and Monday, Dec. 2, with over 90,000 departing passengers daily. Total annual passenger traffic to date has exceeded record-breaking 2023 by 12%, while local passenger traffic has bested 2023 by the same margin. These numbers reflect a nationwide trend, with airports and airlines preparing for record-breaking traffic. American Airlines is ready to welcome nearly 8.3 million customers in its network during Thanksgiving.

To provide extra support, CLT will have additional staff wearing bright yellow vests to help guide and assist travelers.

Parking will be in high demand. Earlier this month CLT launched the Royalty Program. Flyers can sign in or create an account to begin receiving rewards with points earned when booking official CLT Airport parking online at parkCLT.com or on the CLT Airport app. Passengers are strongly advised to book parking online.

TSA PreCheck® lanes are located at Checkpoints A and 1. Standard screening remains at Checkpoints 1 and 3, which was previously named Checkpoint E. Any checkpoint can get you to any gate. Passengers are encouraged to be inside the terminal – not in the parking lot or elsewhere on the property – at least two hours prior to a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Security wait times are expected to reach up to 45 minutes during busy times.

The inner three roadway lanes on the Departures/Ticketing level at the terminal entrance opened Nov. 13. Normally reserved for Airport shuttle buses only, these three lanes will be activated for all vehicles beginning Monday, Nov. 25, through Monday, Dec. 2. During this period, all Airport shuttle buses will utilize pick up and drop off services on the Lower/Arrivals level as it did prior to Nov. 13. CLT will continuously monitor the situation and make adjustments as necessary.

Other traffic changes along the roadways in and around the Airport include law enforcement presence at busy intersections, re-routing portions of the Airport shuttle bus operation to reduce roadway traffic congestion and reallocating staffing along the Terminal Curb Front.

__Book your parking when you book your flight__

- Passengers are encouraged to reserve a parking spot at parkCLT.com or on the CLT Airport app to guarantee availability. Only credit cards are accepted for all Airport parking.
- Drive-up parking may be available in the following lots depending on availability: Valet, Hourly and Long Term 2.

__From Door to Departure__

- There’s more than one way to get to the Airport. Check navigation apps before leaving home.
- Monitor shuttle bus wait times on the CLT Airport App.
- Visit tsa.gov to learn what’s allowed through security checkpoints. Check with your airline for any additional restrictions for what is allowed on your aircraft.
- Expect crowds and long lines at security checkpoints. Check estimated security wait times on CLT’s website or app and remember any checkpoint can get you to any gate. Wait times can change frequently, therefore, check often.
- Drivers who are picking up passengers should take advantage of CLT’s free Cell Phone Lot located on Josh Birmingham Parkway and wait 20 to 30 minutes after the plane lands before driving to the terminal.

__Destination CLT Updates__

- The Airport is approximately a year away from the completion of the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project.
- Checkpoint C closed in September for the construction of Checkpoint 2, which is expected to open in late spring or early summer. Upon completion of the TLE, there will be Checkpoints 1, 2 and 3 with more total lanes than the prior configuration and enhanced equipment for more efficient screening.
- Airline skycap positions offering passenger curbside assistance launched Nov. 13 with four more opening by the end of the month.
- Pedestrian walkways opened to passengers July 31, providing travelers with weather-protected access between the Hourly Deck and the Terminal under an expansive 146,000-square-foot glass canopy.
- American Airlines added 11 new ticket counters on Oct. 12, following the introduction of 11 counters in July. These counters are located between Doors 2 and 3 in the center of the Terminal Lobby.
- Concourse A Expansion – Phase II opened Sept. 17. The 200,000-square-foot expansion north of Concourse A – Phase I introduced 10 new gates, including seven for Delta Air Lines, two for Frontier Airlines, and one common-use gate. With the completion of Concourse A – Phase II and the Terminal Lobby Expansion in phase five of six, the Airport’s total square footage increases from 1.8 million to 2.2 million.

Thanksgiving Travel Kicks Off Today

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte Douglas International Airport will open the inner three roadway lanes on the Departures/Ticketing level at the terminal entrance for Airport shuttle bus operations on Nov. 13. These lanes are reserved for shuttle buses carrying passengers from all onsite parking facilities, with the exception of the Hourly Deck. All arriving passengers, as well as employee, flight crew and offsite shuttle buses will continue to drop off and pick up on the Arrivals/Lower level.

“This is a significant achievement for the Terminal Lobby Expansion project as we continue to improve the customer experience for our local passengers,” said Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine. “The opening of these inner three lanes on the departures level will streamline traffic flow, especially as we get ready for the busy holiday travel season.”

In coordination with the opening of the three lanes, new airline skycap positions will be introduced offering passenger curbside assistance, with four launching on Nov. 13 and four more opening by the end of the month. Additionally, all eight lanes on the upper level have been repainted with fresh lane markings and new signage has been added for increased wayfinding assistance.

This marks the latest milestone for the Terminal Lobby Expansion project, a five-year effort transforming the Airport’s front door. Pedestrian walkways opened to passengers July 31, providing travelers with weather-protected access between the Hourly Deck and the Terminal under an expansive 146,000-square-foot glass canopy. Furthermore, American Airlines added 11 new ticket counters on Oct. 12, following the introduction of 11 counters in July. Most recently, Checkpoint E was renamed Checkpoint 3 Oct. 8. Checkpoint 2 remains under construction and is expected to open in late spring or early summer. 

The Airport is approximately a year away from the completion of the signature project in the Destination CLT portfolio, the Airport’s $4 billion capital investment in capacity enhancements. It is adding 175,000 square feet to the lobby and renovating 191,000 square feet of existing space, transforming the terminal built in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million travelers annually. Inner Three Roadway Lanes on Departures Level Set to Open Nov. 13

__Runway Scheduled for Commissioning in 2027__

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Letter of Intent to fund $290 million for the Fourth Parallel Runway project in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding. The Fourth Parallel Runway was identified in the Airport’s 2016 Master Plan Update to address current capacity and future demand. 

“We are thrilled to receive this notable investment from the FAA,” said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. “The funding will enable the airport to continue progress on this crucial and nationally significant infrastructure project, boosting capacity and operational efficiency.”

The 10,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide runway, is positioned west of Runway 18C/36C. The construction also includes north and south end-around taxiways, which will allow aircraft arriving on the existing western runway to bypass the new runway and the center runway. This enhancement will notably reduce aircraft operating time, fuel consumption, and emissions, while also decreasing long wait times for passengers. CLT has the highest share of connecting passengers at any airport in the U.S.

CLT broke ground on the project in June 2023. Grading is currently in progress and will continue through mid-2026. Concrete paving is set to begin in 2025 and wrap up by early 2027, with commissioning planned for fall 2027. Visitors to the Airport Overlook at CLT can catch a glimpse of ongoing runway and taxiway construction. Certain nearby roadways will experience closures and detours as construction advances.  It is the final project in the Destination CLT portfolio—a $4 billion capital investment in capacity enhancements—and the sole new runway construction project currently underway in the United States.

According to Airports Council International, CLT is the seventh busiest airport in the world for arrivals and departures. It also ranks as the fourth busiest US Domestic Airport Megahub, based on a recent study by OAG, a leading data platform in the global travel industry. This study evaluates airports based on the highest ratio of scheduled connections to the number of destinations they serve. In 2023, passenger traffic set a record at 53.4 million in 2023, and 2024 is projecting to break records once again.

FAA Commits $290 Million for Fourth Parallel Runway

__200-000-Square-Foot Addition Boosts Capacity, Enhances Passenger Experience Through Unique Art and Displays__

CHARLOTTE, NC – Concourse A Expansion – Phase II at Charlotte Douglas International Airport opens Sept. 17. The 200,000-square-foot expansion north of Concourse A – Phase I introduces 10 new gates, including seven for Delta Air Lines, two for Frontier Airlines, and one common-use gate, bringing the Airport's total count to 124.

“The opening of Concourse A Expansion – Phase II marks a significant milestone for CLT and the Destination CLT program,” said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. “This addition not only represents growth, but a dedication to enhancing the overall travel experience. The 10 new gates, unique dining options, artistic touches and cutting-edge innovation reflect a significant investment in our infrastructure and serves as a testament to our vision for building an airport for the future.”

Like Phase I, which debuted July 18, 2018, Phase II features auto-tinting window glass to regulate temperature and sunlight and gate seating and tables offering integrated and wireless charging capabilities. Restrooms are equipped with water-saving fixtures and a private Mother’s Room is located inside the women’s restroom for nursing moms.

Travelers can choose from four dining options featuring local and familiar cuisine: Dunkin’ has its third CLT location here. Crown Diner offers all-day breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads and cocktails. Great Wagon Road Distilling Co. produces spirits from the Queen City’s oldest distillery, and Market Place provides snacks, beverages, and other essentials. Delta Air Lines is expected to debut a 15,000-square-foot Sky Club® by year’s end.

Another highlight of Phase II is the focus on enhancing the passenger experience. The space features a diverse array of art, educational displays and interactive installations that honor North Carolina's aviation heritage and history.

Travelers can experience the Wright Brothers' "First in Flight" story en route to the gate area. A light wall and the sound of the Wright Flyer play in concert powered by passenger movement. Four terrazzo lines, each marked by a bronze plaque created by artist Greg Stump of Cornelius, indicate the distances of the Wrights’ first powered flights.

A standout feature near Gate A31 is a life-sized, 14x40-foot DC-9-82 T-Tail embedded in the terrazzo flooring. Weighing 5,000 pounds, the "Mad Dog" was salvaged from Roswell, New Mexico, reimagined by MotoArt Studio in Los Angeles, and assembled in Charlotte as a unique centerpiece.

Hanging from the mezzanine level is Val Britton's 950-square-foot installation, "Where Earth Meets Sky." The Portland, Oregon based artist created a piece featuring digital prints, paint, and collage on birchwood panels. It is a combining of aerial views, mapping, topography, and research into the history and landscape of Charlotte. Red clay from the area was used in the paint for an additional touch of local flair.

Concourse A - Phase II, with an estimated cost of approximately $241 million, was made possible through funding from a North Carolina Airport Improvement Program state grant, Passenger Facility Charge bonds, and non-Passenger Facility Charge bonds. Construction was carried out by JE Dunn and McFarland, a joint venture, while C Design and Perkins+Will produced the architectural design. Construction began May 10, 2022.

With the completion of Concourse A – Phase II and the Terminal Lobby Expansion in phase five of six, the Airport’s total square footage increases from 1.8 million to 2.2 million.

__Marshall Drive to Close Permanently for North End Around Taxiway Project__

CHARLOTTE, NC – Starting Sept. 4, construction associated with the North End Around Taxiway project requires the permanent closure of Marshall Drive and a portion of Old Dowd Road. A new bridge connecting to Wilkinson Blvd. will be completed during the closure. During this time, motorists should follow all detour signage.

The closures will impact visitors to the Airport Overlook as well as local traffic and commuters who use Old Dowd Road to Marshall Drive to access Wilkinson Blvd. Traffic changes are as follows:

__Visitors to the Airport Overlook:__
- Motorists heading west on Wilkinson Blvd. (away from Uptown) will take a left on Sam Wilson Road and follow the detour signage, taking a left on Old Dowd Road and a left on Old Dowd Road at Wallace Neel Road.
- Drivers heading east on Wilkinson Boulevard (toward Uptown) will take a right on Sam Wilson Road and follow the detour signage, taking a left on Old Dowd Road and a left on Old Dowd Road at Wallace Neel Road.

__Residents and commuters who use Wallace Neel Road to Wilkinson Blvd:__
- Motorists heading north on Wallace Neel Road will take a left on Old Dowd Road and a right on Sam Wilson Road to Wilkinson Blvd.
- Travelers wanting to get to Wallace Neel Road from Wilkinson Blvd. will take Sam Wilson Road to Old Dowd Road to Wallace Neel Road.

The North End Around Taxiway project aims to improve safety by eliminating crossings of the center runway.

__Airport Preparing for Record Breaking End of Summer Holiday__

Labor Day marks the end of a record-breaking summer travel season, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is preparing for a busy holiday weekend as travelers embark on final summer getaways.

From Thursday, Aug. 29, to Wednesday, Sept. 4, the Airport expects a significant increase in local traffic, with an estimated 235,000 passengers passing through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints —representing a 15.8% rise compared to the 2023 Labor Day weekend. Overall, CLT is forecasting total passenger traffic of 1.14 million, representing a 19% increase compared to the same time last year. This rise in passenger numbers at CLT typifies a nationwide trend, with airports and airlines operating at record-breaking totals this summer. The Airport advises travelers to review CLT’s Don’t Wing It, Prepare to Fly! guide for a smoother journey.

After Labor Day, CLT will implement two significant changes as part of the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project:

- Beginning Sept. 5, Checkpoint C will close for construction of Checkpoint 2, and TSA PreCheck will be moved to Checkpoint A.  Standard screening remains at Checkpoints 1 and E.
- Upon completion of the TLE project, there will be Checkpoints 1, 2, and 3 with more total lanes than the prior configuration and enhanced equipment for more efficient screening.
- In addition, 11 of 24 new American Airlines ticket counters will open, with the remaining counters scheduled to open in October. These counters are located between Doors 2 and 3 in the center of the Terminal Lobby.

The TLE is in phase five of six and scheduled for completion in 2025. It is transforming the terminal, which was built in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million travelers a year. In 2023, CLT passenger traffic reached a record 53.4 million. Of the 26.7 million passengers who departed CLT, 8.3 million (31%) used the terminal lobby.

__Skybridges and Underground Walkways Allow Passengers to Bypass Traffic__

Two pedestrian skybridges linking the Hourly Deck and Terminal open to passengers Wednesday, July 31, as the Airport reaches a significant milestone for the Terminal Lobby Expansion project. The skybridges, situated on the fifth floor of the Hourly Deck linking to the third level in the lobby, are under an expansive 146,000-square-foot glass canopy, providing passengers convenience and weather protection.

“We are thrilled to mark another milestone in the Terminal Lobby Expansion project with the opening of the two skybridges,” said Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine. “Pedestrians will experience enhanced safety with efficient access to the terminal away from traffic and ensuring smoother vehicle traffic flow. These enhancements underscore our commitment to providing a first-class passenger experience.”

The addition of the skybridges complements the existing underground walkways, offering travelers seamless and weather-protected access between the two structures. Starting July 31, pedestrians traveling between the terminal and the Hourly Deck/Rental Car Facility must use the skybridges or underground walkways. Roadway crossings to and from the Hourly Deck are prohibited. Passengers utilizing Airport and hotel shuttles, rideshares and curbside drop-offs and pickups are not affected.

Signage will be in place to guide passengers, and CLT will have additional staff wearing yellow vests for additional wayfinding assistance.

Airport Unveils Skybridges Enhancing Passenger Flow and Safety

__Local Passenger Traffic Expected to Exceed 2023 by 15%__

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is gearing up for a busy Fourth of July holiday weekend, with record-breaking passenger numbers expected to surpass 2023 totals. This comes after CLT has repeatedly broken records for local passenger traffic earlier this spring and summer.

From Tuesday, July 2, through Monday, July 8, the Airport is expecting approximately 191,000 local passengers departing Charlotte, a 15.6% uptick from the same period in 2023. In addition, CLT is forecasting a total passenger traffic of 1.18 million during this period, reflecting a 12% increase compared to last year.

CLT’s passenger increase mirrors the trend seen at other airports nationwide, with both airports and aircraft operating at full capacity this summer. The Transportation Security Administration recently announced it broke a single-day record Sunday, June 23 with nearly 3 million travelers screened at checkpoints.

- Book your parking when you book your flight. Record Passengers Predicted for July 4 Travel

Not many people can say they’ve gotten their dream job before starting middle school. That’s exactly what happened to Quentin Hines Jr. At least for one spectacularly sunny day.

When Quentin was 4 years old, he told his parents he wanted to mow the grass at Charlotte Douglas International Airport someday. He would take his little toy mower to the old Airport Overlook, watch the planes and fantasize about maintaining the fields at such a glorious place.

Quentin now at 11 years old has a high-tech mower and his own lawn care company. He teaches his friends how to cut grass and mows his elderly neighbors’ lawns for free.

__Network Reporter Gets the Scoop__

CBS News National Correspondent David Begnaud learned about Quentin and decided to try and make the rising sixth-grader’s dream a reality.

Begnaud’s producer reached out to CLT to see if Quentin could mow a little grass at the Airport.

The rest, as they say, is history.

__Planning the Surprise__

Begnaud and his crew traveled to Charlotte to interview Quentin and his parents about his lawn mowing dreams.

Meanwhile at CLT, employees from all different departments jumped into action to prepare for Quentin’s big surprise.

Finding grass that needed trimming was not a problem. With more than 1,000 grass-covered acres in the Airport’s secure area alone, CLT has crews mowing in three shifts, 24/7 for eight months a year. During cooler months, the Airport cuts back mowing to 10 hours a day.

Staff scouted out a great location that was close to the action. They put together an all-star field maintenance crew and picked out the biggest and coolest mowers. They got security clearance for Quentin and his parents and set up a radio message from FAA ground control to give him clearance to mow.

It all came together one morning in May as the Airport crew lined up and waited for Quentin and CBS News to arrive.

__Welcome to CLT, Quentin!__

Quentin was stunned when an Airport official drove him and his parents onto the tarmac toward a lighted sign that read “Welcome to CLT, Quentin!”

CLT Chief Maintenance Mechanic Larry Johnson was the first to introduce himself. Johnson shook the young man’s hand and gave him a bright yellow safety vest.

After Quentin met the rest of the crew, Johnson showed him the different types of mowers in the CLT fleet. There are zero-turn riding mowers, flail mowers for thick brush and a robotic mower for hard-to- reach areas, just to name a few.

Quentin and Johnson spent about an hour behind a big push mower, meticulously going up and back as planes took off and landed behind them.

Then, the pair headed off to the granddaddy of all Airport mowers, a John Deere tractor that pulls a 15’ batwing mowing deck. Quentin could not believe his eyes. It was the same one he used to admire from the old Airport Overlook.

“I thought I was dreaming,” Quentin said. “It didn’t feel real because it had always been my dream. It was by far one of the best experiences of my life.”

Watching her son ride on that tractor, Shirley Hines was speechless. Her eyes welled up with tears.

“It was surreal,” Shirley said. “We are so proud of him. He handled the interview and the cameras with such grace and humility.”

__A Lasting Impression__

Resting in an air-conditioned Airport conference room with cold water and some lunch, Quentin reflected on the experience.

He said mowing with Johnson was his favorite part of the day. On a scale of one to 10, he gave it a 15.

“I am still stoked about that day,” Johnson said after the CBS story aired. “I am so proud of that young man.”

“Quentin has intelligent parents, and they are guiding him to success,” said Field Maintenance Manager Maxwell Courtney. “It’s nice to see a kid like Quentin thinking about what he wants to do in life and working hard to achieve that goal.”

Shirley said since the story aired, she and her husband have received a lot of praise for their parenting, but she gives Quentin the credit.

“People say he has a bright future, and we agree, but he has been the driver in this journey; we are doing what we can to support him,” Shirley said.

__What’s Next?__

Quentin is spending the summer (how else?) mowing lawns and posting about it on [social media](https://www.instagram.com/qjsprofessionallawncare/). He addresses his followers as “Grasshoppers.”  He is also teaching his friends how to take care of lawns, emphasizing safety when using push mowers and weed eaters.

In the fall, Quentin looks forward to taking business classes in the International Baccalaureate program at his new middle school.

__More to the Story__

Spending the morning at CLT was only half of the surprise CBS News had for Quentin.

After leaving the Airport, they went to Carolina Panthers’ stadium, where groundskeepers taught him how to take care of the field. Quentin even got to paint yard lines on the practice field.

“I was pretty nervous,” Quentin said. “Once I got the hang of it I did really well for it being my first time.”

Quentin said the Panthers gave him an open invitation to come help groundskeepers again this summer and he says he’ll take them up on that offer.

“This has been a life-changing experience for us as a family,” Shirley said. “It has opened up the discussion for talking about college for him and what he would like to study. Some of the guys at Panthers’ stadium gave him tips about turf grass and how to get into the field.”

CLT Makes Lawn Mowing Dreams Come True

Experience Unparalleled Views, Immersive Education and Fun-Filled Adventures

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is unveiling its long-awaited permanent Airport Overlook to the public on Friday, June 7. Located at 5130 Airport Overlook Drive, it is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week and admission is free.

“The Airport knows how important the Overlook is to the local community and we worked diligently to create a place that people of all ages will enjoy,” said CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine. “This space showcases many displays and features that will educate, inspire and create lasting memories.”

The 600,000-square-foot area was designed to inspire and propel the next generation of aviators. It maintains the spectacular airfield, skyline and terminal views enthusiasts have enjoyed for decades and features modern amenities, LED lighting, paved parking and an expanded food truck staging area.

A retired U.S. military fighter jet, an F-4 Phantom II, is on display along with informative exhibits featuring Carolinas’ aviation history. Young aviators will enjoy the playground, which is purposely crafted to highlight Airport features, including a mini air traffic control tower and runway. The site also includes a USAir Flight 106 memorial.

Visitors will be greeted at the Old Dowd Road entrance by a bright blue tail sign that was previously located on Josh Birmingham Parkway. Installed in 1992, it was removed in 2014 and restored specifically for the Overlook to provide easy wayfinding access.

This marks the fifth dedicated Overlook at CLT since 1937. The most recent Overlook location had served the community since 1989. CLT Advises Passengers Don’t Wing It, Prepare to Fly

The summer travel season will be the busiest ever at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Memorial Day weekend will bring many passengers through CLT to usher in its unofficial start.

Passenger numbers are projected to be 14% higher than summer of 2023. During the Memorial Day travel period, extending Thursday through Tuesday, CLT is anticipating 1.05 million arrivals and departures traveling through the Airport. That is a 21% increase over the same time last year. The expected peak travel days will be Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24. The Airport will have additional staff wearing yellow vests to guide and assist travelers in the lobby.

Charlotte Douglas is preparing for the crowds by coordinating with law enforcement and the North Carolina and Charlotte Departments of Transportation to manage traffic flow, adding additional staff at the terminal curb front to keep traffic moving and providing alternate routes for Airport shuttle busses during peak travel periods.

“That’s where the most action is,” Johnson said. E is the busiest concourse, and Johnson has the most fun when he’s busy.

He is one of about 50 people who volunteer to help travelers navigate through CLT. 

Wearing bright blue vests and red buttons that read, “Ask Me,” Airport volunteers are strategically located in high-traffic areas for passengers who need assistance.

“They have a special look,” Johnson said. “I like to make eye contact. Then you can usually tell whether they need your help.”

Johnson volunteers at CLT for three four-hour shifts a month. When he gets home, his wife always wants to hear the interesting and funny things that happened.

“She’d be disappointed if I didn’t have a good story,” Johnson said.

She’s never disappointed.

Johnson keeps a journal about his interactions with travelers, including the time a man asked him to help find his wife. She had their boarding passes, but he had both of their cellphones. Johnson was able to figure out which gate he needed to go to, walked him there and waited with him until his wife arrived.

CLT volunteers can help you find your gate, a restroom and give a restaurant recommendation. They can call for medical help, suggest a quiet spot to relax and direct you to an Airport lounge.

All volunteers go through background checks before coming on board. They also complete six weeks of training before putting on that blue vest. They learn about the history of the Airport and the protocols they must follow. They also talk through various scenarios they could face.

During a recent shift, Johnson was asked three times in less than an hour where the Airport USO Lounge was located. Each time, he gave detailed directions how to get there, gave the servicemember a firm handshake and thanked them for their bravery.

Johnson is a Vietnam War combat veteran. After the war, he worked in sales, marketing and advertising. He traveled often for work, flying in and out of CLT for more than 20 years.

Now retired with extra time on his hands, Johnson is happy to help busy business travelers, servicemembers in between assignments and anyone else who needs direction or just a friendly face.

“I think deep down, people want help,” he said. “They may not want to admit it, but many people are under stress when they’re traveling.”

Another story in Johnson’s journal is about a man he once saw walking very slowly down an Airport corridor. When he asked if he needed help, the man explained he had significant neck and back pain, but he didn’t need paramedics or a wheelchair.

With nothing else he could do, Johnson simply said he’d walk with him to meet his family. Johnson told him he wished he could do something to ease his pain. The man replied, “Just being with you makes me feel better.”

And that’s exactly why Johnson volunteers at Charlotte Douglas, to be there for people.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Concourse E Expansion achieved Green Globes® for New Construction certification, recognizing sustainability efforts during design and construction. The certification affirms the Airport’s commitment to current and future building operations best practices, occupant health and wellness, and reducing carbon emissions.

Administered by the [Green Building Initiative](https://thegbi.org/), Green Globes® is a nationally recognized green rating assessment and certification system that ensures projects meet clearly defined criteria in seven assessment areas: Project Management, Site, Energy, Water, Resources, Emissions and Indoor Environment. In addition to evaluating documentation in each of these performance areas, the Green Globes certification process includes an onsite assessment with a third-party assessor to verify implementation.

Concourse E Expansion received a rating of One Green Globes® for sustainable practices such as energy efficient lighting design that optimizes natural lighting in the gate areas, HVAC system enhancements to improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality and specifying building materials and paved surfaces to reduce heat.

The 34,000-square-foot area debuted to passengers April 2022 (Gates E 36-45), adding one gate to the concourse’s north end and relocating nine existing gates for operational efficiency and to prepare for jet bridges.

It is the third CLT project to receive Green Globes® distinction. The Central Energy Plant earned a rating of Two Green Globes® for the inclusion of sustainable practices in April. Concourse A Expansion – Phase I received One Green Globes® in April 2021.

__Airport Trial Run is Prep for Future Travel__

On a perfect spring day in April, dozens of families arrived at Charlotte Douglas International Airport to board a flight to nowhere. It was a dress rehearsal of sorts, designed to introduce a select group of children to the air travel experience.

The Airport can be a chaotic place for anyone, but for people with autism and other intellectual and development disabilities, it can be confusing and scary.

That’s why Delta Air Lines and [The Arc](https://thearc.org/our-initiatives/travel/) host Wings for All at CLT and other airports across the nation. It gives families a chance to become familiar with the unique process of air travel without the real-life stress that sometimes goes along with it.

__Navigating the Airport__

Crystal Isenhour drove to CLT from Cabarrus County with her daughter, Lyla, so she could get used to the unusual sounds at the Airport. Lyla, who is 15 years old, has an auditory processing disorder.

“It’s very loud in an Airport,” Crystal said. “When we get on (the plane) and the engines come up, that can be quite scary for a kid. So, when we can give them some repetition, when they can become familiar with sounds, they can be excited about coming to the Airport instead of scared.”

Lyla wheeled her carry-on bag around confidently and handled the new adventure like a pro.

Even though this was her first time in an airport, Lyla knew what was going to happen at the gate, thanks to some TikTok videos she had watched and a “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book she had read.

Still, Lyla learned a lot during these three hours.

“I learned how to check in, I learned where to go,” Lyla said. “I learned when you go through security you have to put your phone in (the bin) too.”

__Knowledge is Power__

After arriving at the Airport, families waited in line at the Delta counter. They had to show their identification, put a tag on their bags and collect their boarding passes.

During each step of the way, Crystal calmly explained to Lyla exactly what they were doing and why. You have to show your ID to prove you are the person whose name is on the ticket. You have to put a tag on your bag with your name and phone number on it in case it gets lost, the person who finds it can contact you.

Knowledge is power for Lyla and many of the other kids at the event. It’s the unknown that can be unnerving.

When they went through security screening, officers pulled Crystal aside to inspect her orthopedic boot.

“Did you see all the special stuff they did?” Crystal asked Lyla.

“Yeah, if you have a boot on or something, they have to make sure you’re not hiding anything in it,” Lyla replied.

“So, why did they do that?” Crystal asked.

“Because on the airplane, you’re like in midair and somebody could just be like, ‘give me your stuff,’ ”

Lyla said, making a finger gun gesture.

“Right,” Crystal said. “To keep you safe.”

__Expect the Unexpected__

Crystal knew the Wings for All event would be beneficial for Lyla. She previously brought her older daughter, Sienna, through the program. Sienna, who is 18 years old, has autism.

“It was such a great test for her. Just being able to come and experience (the Airport) before it’s a necessary thing,” Crystal said.

During the Wings for All event, there were friendly volunteers at every turn, special signs directing guests where to go and members of the CLT Canine Crew to help the kids feel at ease. At the gate, participants were treated to chicken fingers and french fries with big cookies for dessert.

“You guys have made it wonderful for them, to make them comfortable,” Crystal said. “The second time won’t be as easy.”

That’s why Crystal made a point of explaining to Lyla what to do if something unexpected happens. Why it’s important to check the information boards, what to do if a gate assignment changes, why flights are sometimes delayed and what to do if she couldn’t hear an overhead announcement.

__Ready for Take-off__

After eating dinner at the gate, the participants boarded the plane in sections. They scanned their boarding passes and learned how to find their seat assignment.

Once everyone was settled, the pilot drove the airplane around the airfield. He even sped up to give the kids a taste of what it feels like and sounds like when a plane is taking off.

CLT fire trucks performed a ceremonial water canon salute as the plane headed back to the gate, spraying the plane with an arch of water in celebration of the journey.

__A Successful Trip__

On the drive home, Lyla thanked her mom for taking her to the Airport. She told her dad all about meeting the maintenance crew and seeing some of their equipment.

Lyla said the highlights of the night were getting to try out the flight attendant’s jump seat and collecting trading cards from the CLT Canine Crew members.

The only thing that Lyla did not like about Wings for All was that they were not actually flying somewhere. She hopes to visit France, Hawaii and Disney World in the future.

__CLT Airport gets ready for record-breaking crowds__

Spring Break is expected to be the busiest one yet at Charlotte Douglas International Airport as local school districts dismiss for an eight-day recess beginning Thursday, March 28. Forecasts show passenger volumes 15% higher from last year with the busiest travel days on Thursday, March 28, Friday, March 29, and Monday, April 1.

The Airport is preparing for the crowds by coordinating with law enforcement and the North Carolina and Charlotte Departments of Transportation to manage traffic flow, adding additional staff at the terminal curb front to keep traffic moving and providing alternate routes for Airport shuttle busses. Inside the terminal, CLT will have additional staff in the lobby wearing easy-to-spot yellow vests to assist passengers. Updates with any significant traffic and passenger impacts will be posted in real-time to the Airport’s social media accounts (@cltairport).

- Book your parking when you book your flight. Don’t Wing It: Prepare for Spring Break

When Lisa and Charles Allen tell the story of how they met, people sometimes don’t believe them. That’s because it sounds like something out of a movie. But this is a real-life fairy tale, happy ending and all, and it began once upon a time at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

“I was walking out of the restroom and we literally, physically ran into each other,” Lisa said. “My briefcase fell open and my belongings kind of flew everywhere. As we both squatted down to pick up my stuff, I looked up and said to myself, ‘Oh wow, he’s cute.’”

Totally a rom-com moment, right?

__When Charles Met Lisa__

It was a beautiful Monday morning in the fall of 2019. Lisa and Charles were both headed from CLT to California for work. Storms elsewhere delayed their flights, and they were waiting in the American Airlines Admirals Club.

“I had a big presentation in Monterrey that day,” Lisa said. “I was feeling a little stressed because of the delay and went into the ladies room to regroup. As I was walking out, we ran into each other.”

“I think you ran into me,” Charles joked. “My mom taught me to be a good, Southern boy, so I had to help her. Then, she smiled, and I was like, ‘Oh wow. I’ve gotta get her phone number.’”

They ended up sitting at the bar for more than three hours, talking about life and their kids. Between them, they have five adult children. Before boarding their flights, they tried to make plans to see each other again, but they lived in different cities and traveled often for work.

__Rocking Chair Courtship__

“He was in South Carolina, and I was in Charlotte,” Lisa said. “We found it was easier for us to meet at the Airport and on the road since we both traveled so much.”

“It’s kind of funny because we did date in the rocking chairs,” Charles said. “We would sit in the Atrium and just talk, maybe have sushi or a cocktail and plan our next meeting.”

They would coordinate their work trips, get to CLT early and schedule layovers to spend time together. Then they would meet for the weekend somewhere like Los Angeles, Chicago and Austin.

“It sounds very glamorous talking about it now,” Lisa said. “That was before COVID.”

__Grounded by the Pandemic__

“March 17. We both got grounded on the same day,” Charles said.

After six months of dating while traveling, the couple really didn’t know what their relationship was going to look like moving forward. All they knew is they wanted to be together.

Charles asked Lisa if she wanted to come down to Hartsville for the weekend. That’s about two hours south of Charlotte.

“So, I brought my two little dogs and thought, ‘Well, we’ll figure this out pretty quickly. He’s either going to like the dogs and not like me or vice versa,’” Lisa said.

Charles liked the dogs and spending time with Lisa.

They went from seeing each other every week or two to being together all the time.

“We would spend evenings with a bottle of wine, listening to music, devoting hours making dinner,” Charles said. “We were the strange ones who really enjoyed being locked down.”

“We realized really quickly that we enjoy being together a lot versus traveling all the time,” Lisa said.

__A Complete Life Change__

Lisa and Charles decided to get off the road permanently. That involved selling their homes, moving to a new city and getting new jobs.

“We got married in 2022 at a resort in Arizona where we had our third or fourth date,” Charles said.

“That sounds really bad!” cried Lisa.

Smiling, Charles said, “It was a significant trip for us. That was probably a turning point in our relationship.”

“That’s when I decided I had fallen in love with you,” Lisa said.

__Their New Adventure__

Back in the rocking chairs at CLT, holding hands and looking back on their Airports courtship, Lisa and Charles joke about who bumped into who. They are thankful that fate and delayed flights brought them together.

“All these memories and emotions start flooding back in. It is really quite beautiful to think about,” Lisa said.

“It was unusual the way we started, there’s no doubt about it,” Charles said, swaying in a rocking chair next to his bride. “But it kind of feels natural. It just fits.”

Lisa and Charles say they hope to create a rocking chair porch on their home outside of Charlotte.

The couple still loves to travel for fun. This summer they are taking a trip to Italy via CLT.

__Washington, D.C.__ – Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) on Jan. 19 announced Ella Rice Moultrie as the recipient of the 2023 ACI-NA Risk Management Professional of the Year Award. Moultrie serves as Risk, Safety & Health Manager in the City of Charlotte Aviation Department, owner and operator of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

“As airports continue their focus on risk mitigation and resiliency, airports are continuing to enhance their risk management strategies,” said ACI-NA President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “I congratulate Ella on her demonstrated leadership and thank her for her commitment to fostering a safer and responsive system that serves its passengers, customers and region.”

The recipient was presented during the 2024 Risk Management Conference in Austin, Texas. The conference was attended by nearly 200 risk management professionals from the global airport industry.

Moultrie is responsible for leading the safety and health initiatives intended to keep airport employees and customers safe. Her leadership, initiative and quality of work have allowed both the Aviation Department and the City of Charlotte to identify opportunities that reduce the risk of injury and illness, as well as strengthen CLT’s overall risk mitigation posture.  She is a member of ACI-NA’s Risk Management Committee Steering Group.

“On behalf of the CLT Aviation Department Executive Leadership Team, I want to recognize and congratulate Ella on her selection as the 2023 Airport Risk Management Professional of the Year,” said Chief Financial Officer Mike Hill.

“The Airport’s dramatic growth in a fast changing and dynamic environment have presented new risks and safety challenges,” he said. “We are delighted to see Ella be recognized for her leadership as a champion for safety and risk mitigation by promoting a safer environment for our passengers, customers, and employees.”

__Airport and Engineering College Join Forces for Innovation and Research__

Charlotte Douglas International Airport has partnered with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s William States Lee College of Engineering to develop the first-of-its-kind Charlotte Aviation and Innovation Research Institute, or Charlotte AIR. Other key partners in the Institute are the Sullenberger Aviation Museum and Talbert, Bright and Ellington, a leading consulting firm for the aviation industry.

This one-of-a-kind partnership will give UNC Charlotte students real-world opportunities to research, innovate and develop cutting edge infrastructure at one of the world’s busiest airports.

“As North Carolina’s urban research university, UNC Charlotte is the ideal partnership for CLT as we continue to build an Airport for the future,” said CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine. “The ability to provide both research and learning opportunities in a living laboratory environment like the Airport will help shape the future of aviation while benefitting students with hands on learning.”

Rob Keynton, dean of the W.S. Lee College of Engineering, announced Charlotte AIR Institute on Oct. 24 at the 2023 Airport Engineering Seminar. “Charlotte AIR provides a unique nexus of aviation-focused research, technology transfer, community engagement and education,” said Keynton. “It will help establish this city as the hub for aviation infrastructure and technology expertise through transformative research, while creating the next-generation workforce to meet the industry’s needs.”

Last summer, Airports Council International ranked Charlotte Douglas as the 7th busiest airport in the world for arrivals and departures. For passenger traffic, the Airport lands at 10th nationwide and 19th globally. CLT handled approximately 441,000 arrival and departure flights last year.

CLT, UNC Charlotte Launch Unique Partnership

Winter holiday travel begins Thursday, Dec. 14 at CLT and will continue through Wednesday, Jan. 3.  with higher-than-normal passenger volumes.

Approximately 1.6 million local and connecting passengers are expected to depart from the Airport during those 21 days, an increase of 9% above 2019 and 13% above last year.

CLT has identified short-term changes for the upcoming holiday travel. These include re-routing portions of the Airport shuttle bus operation to reduce roadway traffic congestion and reallocating staffing along the Terminal Curb Front.

Passengers are encouraged to:

Airport to be Busy for Winter Holidays

The 16th annual Runway 5K raised $47,361 for Airport Opportunity Scholarships at Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarships were created in 2018 to help promote careers in aviation as well as economic opportunities in Charlotte.

Since 2019, more than $161,000 has been raised for scholarships. To date, 15 students have attended college for free - made possible by the Runway 5K.

Each scholarship recipient participates in Central Piedmont’s six-week Summer Bridge program, designed to help teens transition from high school to college. Students are assigned academic advisors who help guide them throughout their classes. The scholarship covers their tuition, books and provides internship opportunities.

More than 1,670 runners and walkers registered for the 2023 Runway 5K on Oct. 21. The unique, flat course took place entirely on the airfield with two miles of a runway and a close-up look at aircraft landing and taking off.

During the 2023 race, Carson Truesdell, 28, took first place for the men with a finishing time of 15:13. Ashley Carney, 35, was the first-place finisher among women with a time of 20:10. __CLT Expects Record-Breaking Passenger Traffic__

This Thanksgiving travel season is expected to be the busiest one yet at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Holiday traffic will be busiest from the Thursday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 16) through the Monday after (Nov. 27). During this 12-day period, approximately 900,000 local and connecting passengers are forecasted to depart from the Airport, an increase of 9% above 2019 and 14% above last year.

The busiest days will be Sunday, Nov. 26; Monday, Nov. 27; Friday, Nov. 17; Wednesday Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 25. Total annual passenger traffic to date has exceeded record-breaking 2019 by 6%, while local passenger traffic has bested 2019 by 12%.

CLT will have additional staff dressed in bright yellow vests in the lobby to guide and assist travelers.

Parking will be in high demand. Passengers are strongly advised to book parking online at [parkCLT.com](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/) and be inside the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Security wait times are expected to reach up to 45 minutes during busy times.

The Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Checkpoint 1 opened Nov. 5. The checkpoint features eight screening lanes, including six Automated Screening Lanes. With the opening of Checkpoint 1, Checkpoint D closed. Standard lanes are located at Checkpoints 1, A and E. TSA PreCheck® is located at Checkpoint C. Any checkpoint can get you to any gate. No other changes are anticipated to the security screening process until after the holiday travel season. By early 2025, the Airport will have consolidated its five security checkpoints into three numbered security checkpoints.

__Terminal Lobby Expansion East Side Opened Nov. 9__

- The Terminal Lobby Expansion’s (TLE) east side debuted to passengers Nov. 9, providing approximately 90,000 square feet of additional circulation space and access to the east subterranean walkway.
- Features of the TLE east side include large, picturesque windows, terrazzo flooring throughout, bright blue tiles framing the entrances/exits and architectural-detailed scalloped ceilings.
- The next phase includes renovating the remainder of the original lobby, finishing the 146,000-square-foot canopy that will protect passengers from bad weather while being dropped off in front of the terminal as well as overhead walkways so visitors can bypass Airport traffic.
- The TLE will increase the current lobby space by 175,000 square feet and renovate another 191,000 square feet.

__New Concessions/Amenities__

- The Airport’s first pre-security sit-down dining option, Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen, debuted Oct. 13 near the Queen Charlotte sculpture. It offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as wine, beer and cocktails. It is located near The Queen’s Court, a large gathering space open from floor to ceiling that is drenched in natural light.
- Post security, Midwood Smokehouse (Concourse B), PDQ (Concourse E) and SAMBAZON Acai Bowls (Concourse D) all debuted recently. Triple C Brewing, a Charlotte brewery, will open Nov. 17 on Concourse D.
- If you are traveling on Thanksgiving Day, Brookwood Farms in the Atrium will offer a traditional holiday meal with turkey, ham, gravy, cornbread dressing, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes and desserts. Barbecue also will be on the menu.

Drive-up parking rates for all lots and decks at Charlotte Douglas International Airport will increase Nov. 6. The rate changes are due to substantial local passenger growth and the significant investment in the passenger parking program including the expansion of parking facilities.

CLT parking facilities are full or near capacity because of increases in local passengers parking at the Airport. Local passenger traffic has increased to 30% since spring 2023, outpacing the rise in total people flying to and from CLT post pandemic. Charlotte is the seventh busiest airport in the world and this year expects to exceed 2019’s record-breaking 50 million passengers.

Passengers are encouraged to reserve a parking spot at [parkCLT.com](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/) or on the CLT Airport app to guarantee availability.  Online booking customers will have access to the best available rates, with additional discounts offered to [CLT Airport parking email subscribers](https://subscribe.cltairport.com/subscribe).

The increases are in line with other major hub Airports, many of whom have modified their parking facilities and pricing post pandemic. The last time CLT raised parking prices was July 2021.

The Airport launched its new parking revenue control system in 2020 to modernize the customer experience. Passenger benefits include license plate recognition enabling a paperless and contactless parking experience, real-time parking availability and additional payment options for all major credit cards and mobile payment apps, such as Google Pay and Apple Pay.

The panel cited the Airport’s status as American Airlines’ second-largest hub and the signature white rocking chairs throughout the terminal, among others, as part of the Airport’s outstanding amenities, along with the wealth of nonstop destinations.

The distinctions is another feather in the cap for CLT, which was recently named the fifth most connected domestic Airport by OAG and named the most efficient North American Airport with 30+ million passengers by the Air Transport Regional Society.

Earlier this summer, Airports Council International ranked Charlotte Douglas as the 7th busiest airport in the world for arrivals and departures. For passenger traffic the Airport lands at 10th nationwide and 19th globally.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport, along with its tenants and partners, will host an Airport Job Fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Urban League of Central Carolinas, 740 West Fifth St.

Participating employers will include the Aviation Department, American Airlines and concessionaires HMSHost and Paradies Largardère. Additional employers will be in attendance.

Hundreds of full- and part-time, seasonal and temporary positions are available from entry level to managerial with the Aviation Department and Airport partners.

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer travel season and Charlotte Douglas International Airport expects to be busy over the holiday as flyers take final summer adventures.

Passengers are strongly advised to book parking online at [parkCLT.com](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/) and be inside the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Security wait times could reach up to 45 minutes during busy times.

From Thursday, Aug. 31 to Monday, Sept. 4 the Airport is expecting approximately 351,000 passengers to fly to, from and through CLT, a 6.4% increase from the 2022 Labor Day weekend.

The Airport is expecting increased travel demand in local traffic from 2022. CLT anticipates 150,000 passengers passing through TSA checkpoints compared to 129,000 from last year.

The busy summer season represents a large portion of 2023 passenger volume as CLT is on track to break its 50.2 million passenger record set in 2019.

Mid-year numbers show from January through July 2023 the Airport served 30.3 million passengers, which is 13.7% higher from last year and up 4.6% from the 29.1 million who flew to, from and through Charlotte Douglas during that same period in 2019.

Passengers traveling abroad from January to July 2023 rose 32.2% over 2022 and a 13% increase from 2019.

Labor Day 2023

Labor Day Travel Expected to be Busy

Registration for CLT’s 16th Annual Runway 5K scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 is underway. The event takes place entirely on the airfield with two miles of runway and a close-up look at aircraft landing and taking off.

The cost is $30 and increases to $35 on Aug. 31 and $40 on Oct. 8. Sign up now before the race sells out. To register, visit the official [Runway 5K website](https://raceroster.com/events/2023/77517/runway-5k). Participants will receive a T-shirt and finisher medal.

This is the fifth year that proceeds will help fund Airport Opportunity Scholarships through Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarships promote careers in aviation, as well as economic opportunities in Charlotte. Eight students from Charlotte high schools have received more than $126,000 in scholarships.

All parking will be at Charlotte Premium Outlets located at 5404 New Fashion Way. Participants will be bused to the race area. Due to security and capacity requirements, no spectators will be allowed.

Since 2007, over 22,000 people have participated in the 5K, which has raised more than $285,000 for local nonprofit agencies and scholarships.

CLT ranks the seventh busiest airport [worldwide for arrivals and departures](https://aci.aero/2023/04/05/international-travel-returns-top-10-busiest-airports-in-the-world-revealed/) and 10th in North America for passengers according to the [Airports Council International (ACI) 2022 preliminary rankings](https://skydrop.airportscouncil.org/index.php/s/7x24pscszmaz9f4). Globally, CLT’s passenger traffic ranks 19th. The final rankings will be made public later this summer or early fall.

“The rankings reflect the confidence and eagerness of passengers returning to the skies and the strength of the American Airlines hub,” said CLT’s CEO Haley Gentry. “2023 is on pace to be a 100% recovery from the pandemic, one year earlier than forecasted, as we begin our busiest summer ever.”

CLT is expecting approximately 142,000 passengers to begin their trip Thursday through Tuesday in addition to the approximately 295,000 connecting passengers. The Airport will have additional staff in the lobby to guide and assist passengers. By comparison, during Memorial Day weekend 2022 the Airport welcomed 124,000 local passengers and 277,000 connecting passengers.

Checkpoint B closed March 17 for expansion to include six Automated Screening Lanes and two standard lanes. It is scheduled to reopen by the end of the year. Standard lanes are located at Checkpoints A, D and E. TSA PreCheck® is located at Checkpoint C. Any checkpoint can get you to any gate.

- CLT has more than 60 restaurant locations and more are on the way. SAMBAZON offers ready-to-eat acai bowls, energy drinks, frozen desserts, frozen sorbet and fruit juices. It is located on Concourse D. Wow Bao on Concourse C debuted in April with pan-seared potstickers, steamed dumplings, rice and noodle bowls, soups, salads, specialty drinks and bao, a Chinese steamed bread roll filled with meat or vegetables.
- PDQ will open on Concourse E later this summer. Midwood Smokehouse will debut in the fall on Concourse B and a second Panera Bread will open on Concourse E by the end of the year.

Airport Community Partnerships, supported by Charlotte Douglas International Airport, raised a record $115,384 for Freedom School Partners Summer Literacy Program at Renaissance West STEAM Academy.

Fifty-one companies, including American Airlines, Aviation Consulting Engineers, Paradies Lagardère, HMSHost and Siemens Logistics, sponsored the 2023 golf tournament, held April 2 at Ballantyne Country Club. The event sold out with 144 golfers. The City of Charlotte Aviation Department served as an in-kind sponsor, providing staff support to the planning committee.

“We are grateful that ACP chose to support Freedom School Partners and our Renaissance West scholars through this year’s golf tournament,” said Glenda Bernhardt, CEO of Freedom School Partners. “Because of the generosity of the sponsoring companies, we will be able to provide an incredible experience to 70 children who otherwise would not have access to a summer learning and enrichment program.”

Airport Community Partnerships (ACP) is comprised of companies that operate out of, are based in, or have business with Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The Airport and its business partners come together through the ACP to make a difference in the community.

The STEAM Academy serves young students from multiple schools and neighborhoods surrounding the Airport. ACP’s goal has always been to support programs that help Airport neighbors. The site at Renaissance West STEAM Academy is Freedom School’s largest, serving students from across west Charlotte. More than 84% of children maintained or gained reading ability during Freedom School in 2022. After attending Freedom School, 97% of parents reported an increase in their child’s confidence in their reading ability.

The CLT Charity Golf Tournament has raised nearly $362,000 for local nonprofit organizations since it first teed off in 2019.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Central Energy Plant achieved Two Green Globes® certification for new construction, recognizing sustainability efforts for resource efficiency and reduction of environmental impacts. The certification affirms the Airport’s continued commitment to current and future building operations best practices, occupant health and wellness, and reducing carbon emissions.

Administered by the Green Building Initiative (GBI), [Green Globes®](https://thegbi.org/green-globes-certification/) is a nationally recognized green rating assessment and certification system that ensures projects meet clearly defined criteria in seven assessment areas: project management, site, energy, water, resources, emissions, and indoor environment. In addition to evaluating documentation in each of these performance areas, the Green Globes® certification process includes an onsite assessment with a third-party assessor to verify implementation.

In December 2018, Charlotte City Council approved the city’s [Strategic Energy Action Plan](https://www.charlottenc.gov/sustainability/seap/Pages/default.aspx?NotFoundURL=https://www.charlottenc.gov/seap&Referrer=https://www.google.com/), which aims to reduce its carbon footprint through a variety of actions, including those focused on buildings and energy generation. Under the sustainable facilities policy, all city-owned or managed new construction and major renovation projects must achieve either Green Globes® or LEED® certification, and ENERGY STAR® certification (where applicable).

The Central Energy Plant provides additional heating and cooling capacity to the Terminal Lobby Expansion. The increased capacity will maintain comfortable temperatures while reducing energy consumption.

It is the first CLT project to receive a rating of Two Green Globes® for the inclusion of sustainable practices such as an integrated design approach, environmental management during construction, and the use of energy-efficient systems and equipment. Concourse A Expansion – Phase I received One Green Globes® in April 2021.

CLT Receives Green Globes® Certification

Local passenger counts soared at Charlotte Douglas International Airport during Easter weekend as TSA screened over 172,000 passengers April 6-10. Those numbers are in addition to the approximately 53,000 passengers that connected through CLT daily.

The busiest local passenger day was April 6 when 38,209 travelers passed through the checkpoints. That is the most since 2019 and among the top three busiest days in CLT history.

As summer travel approaches, passengers are strongly encouraged to book parking online and be inside the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Longer wait times could be possible during periods of heavy passenger volume.

Easter Brings Increased Passenger Demand

Charlotte Douglas International Airport leadership and Mayor Vi Lyles welcomed U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Wednesday, March 29, for a first-hand look at CLT’s enhanced operational safety and airfield investments.

The Charlotte stop was the first of four airport visits for the Secretary as part of President Joe Biden’s Investing in America tour.

The secretary toured the new 370-foot state-of-the-art air traffic control tower facility with Federal Aviation Administration officials, followed by visit to the airfield.   

Buttigieg’s tour of the airfield offered a glimpse into Charlotte Douglas’s future. Aviation department leaders shared plans for a new parallel runway, associated taxiway system and end-around taxiways that will enhance capacity and operational safety.

These upgrades include a new 10,000-foot runway that will expand airfield throughput. Forecasts show the runway will add 20 additional operations during peak hours in 2028 and 32 in 2033.

The north end-around taxiway will improve operational safety by providing an unimpeded taxi route between the passenger terminal and the west airfield, reducing congestion on the terminal ramp.

The south crossfield taxiway will eliminate long tarmac delay times and the need for planes to cross an active runway to get to the gate.

As the Airport makes improvements to the airfield, CLT is making positive impacts which reduce the carbon footprint.

The addition of the end-around taxiways give aircraft the capability for continued movement, which reduces aircraft operating time, fuel burn and emissions. Ultimately, this will allow passengers to get to and from their destinations more quickly.

The new deicing pad, Taxiway F extension and south crossfield taxiway project will improve air quality due to improved aircraft circulation on the ramp and increased operating efficiency.

All these forward – thinking advancements are part of CLT’s focus on growth as Charlotte builds an Airport for the future.

Plan Ahead for Spring Break Travel

CLT enters the next phase of the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project on Friday, March 17 with the closing of Checkpoint B.

The closure allows for an expansion to include six Automated Screening Lanes and two standard lanes. Currently, Checkpoint B has four security lanes and processed on average 7,300 daily passengers last summer. It is scheduled to reopen before the holidays with the latest technology, a modern look and new name - Checkpoint 1.

CLT has been preparing for Checkpoint B construction by intermittently closing it over the past several months. The Airport has closely coordinated passenger impacts with the Transportation Security Administration and the airlines. Once Checkpoint B is permanently closed, TSA will reposition its employees to other checkpoints and open additional lanes based on daily passenger projections.

The TLE project is increasing the current terminal lobby space by 175,000 square feet and renovating another 191,000 square feet to enhance the passenger experience. The TLE is the signature project for Destination CLT, the Airport’s $3.1 billion capital investment in capacity enhancement projects.

Checkpoint B Closing for Expansion

CLT is receiving $32 million for Concourse E renovations from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminals Program through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The concourse modernization will include new carpet in gate areas, terrazzo flooring in main passenger circulation areas, new LED lighting, seating with integrated power, fresh paint, new ceiling panels, improved wayfinding signage and the replacement of three moving walkways. Restrooms will receive a refresh as well.

Renovations are scheduled to begin in January 2024 and wrap up in early 2027. The project is approximately $40 million. The remaining costs will be funded via General Airport Revenue Bonds.

The Airport underwent similar makeovers for Concourses A, B and C from 2017 through 2020. Currently, Concourse D renovations are in the design phase and tapped to start this fall and finish in 2025. The upgrades will mimic the other concourses. All of these renovations fall under CLT’s $3.1 billion capital investment program known as Destination CLT.

“We are very excited to receive $32 million from the FAA,” said Haley Gentry, CLT’s CEO. “These funds will directly benefit our passengers, who will experience the upgrades first-hand. Concourse E has never been renovated since it was built in 2002, and it’s time to bring it up to the standards of the rest of the terminal.“

Concourse E is CLT’s busiest concourse serving more than 450 daily arrivals and departures. It mostly houses regional jets operated by American Airlines’ affiliates.

It’s not the only upgrade for the concourse. Last May, a 34,000-square-foot expansion opened on Concourse E (Gates E 36-45). The $50 million construction project added one gate to the north end of the concourse and relocated nine existing gates to the new space for operational efficiency and to prepare for jet bridges, which will be added to every gate by the end of this year.
