
Applications opened for CLT's Aviation Academy on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Sessions begin in January 2026.

The eight-week program offers an opportunity to learn more about the Airport and its important regional role. It includes tours of the airfield and the terminal, along with presentations from CLT and its partners. Since 2017, the Aviation Academy has graduated 208 students.

“The Aviation Academy is a chance for the community to take a deep dive into what makes the airport work,” said Melissa Treadaway, CLT Community Affairs Manager. “Participants get a real behind-the-curtain look at CLT and many of our partners, as they learn what the airport’s impact on the region and its economy, and what it takes to keep one of the world’s busiest airports running smoothly.”

A familiar face has returned to the new baby grand in the Airport’s Atrium a few times a week. These days, he’s gained pop culture status and is instantly recognizable to many fans.

Almost eight months ago, 25-year-old CLT volunteer piano player and singer Josh King made his national TV debut on “American Idol.” King finished in the top eight in Hollywood after competing against thousands of would-be contestants who auditioned for Season 23 of the popular ABC show. (Mississippi’s Jamal Roberts was voted the winner.)

“Usually they say something like, ‘We voted for you!’ or ‘What are you doing back here?’ and they ask me about my experience on the show,” said King. “It’s wonderful to meet the people who watched and supported me every week.” 

King says that while passengers, flight crews and Airport workers often stop for selfies or to live stream his music, many are surprised or even disappointed to see him back in Charlotte—and he admits that it is tough to hear. 

“They believe that appearing on a TV show instantly leads to sustainable career success,” said King. “However, the reality is that achievable, sustainable success in this field is much harder than most people believe, and I am trying my best.”

__Tips Defray Studio Costs__

King has been a CLT volunteer since 2018 and is one of seven talented professional musicians who perform regularly at the Airport.

He uses his tips to help pay for studio time to create demos he can send to record labels and producers. King explains that a solo recording session lasting just a few hours can easily cost $500 or more. “And to do the music the right way (as I want it to sound), it will cost a lot more in time and money, as I will need to hire session musicians and a producer who understands the authentic vibe I am trying to achieve.” 

The musician said he stays connected with his fellow “American Idol” alumni and even performs gigs with them (schedule found at [joshkingmusic.com](https://www.joshkingmusic.com/)). He credits Idol judge Lionel Ritchie as a huge supporter during the show. “Lionel told me I need to believe in myself, write good songs, and never give up.”

Following that advice, King continues to craft his bluesy piano and harmonica melodies while keeping his “appreciation” jar on the piano.

“I dream of being a recording artist leading a full touring band for my own big stage concerts,” he added. “I’ve had that dream since I was a little kid and have worked hard all my life to achieve it. I’m never giving up on that dream.”

From Idol Stage to CLT Keys: Finalist Returns to Play

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is American Airlines' second-largest hub and functions like a small city. It has 20,000 people working on its 6,000-acre campus, and in 2024, it welcomed 58.8 million travelers. 

So, it’s no surprise that the Airport has its own Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Division, one of fourteen police divisions in the city. There are 68 full-time personnel, including officers, K9 units, detectives, command staff and 29 hired-back officers (retired CMPD officers who return to work part-time).

__Patrols and Calls for Service__

However, the Airport’s police officers don’t only patrol on foot or in vehicles. The CMPD Airport Division also has a bike patrol that travels through the terminal, covering the ticketing area, concourses, parking lots, decks and employee lots. 

Typical calls include (but are not limited to) responding to an unattended bag, an unruly passenger, a disruption at a gate or on an aircraft and any property theft, crime or disturbance. CMPD also works closely with its federal partners at the Airport. 

“We want people to feel comfortable traveling, whether for vacation or business, we want them to feel comfortable with their families in the Airport,” said CMPD Captain Matthew Horner. “So, we spread out our officers as strategically as possible.”

__Reducing Response Times__

The CLT Bike Patrol began as a pilot program in January 2024 and was fully launched in April 2024. It now has seven bike officers. The Airport uses the police bike patrols to boost visibility, deter crime and reduce response times in the busy, ever-expanding terminal. 

“As CLT continues to grow in square footage along with staff and travelers, being creative in how CLT responds to incidents is very important,” said Michael Tobin, CLT Emergency Operations Manager. “With Medic on carts and CFD (Charlotte Fire Department) on bikes as well, CLT has taken the traditional response mode and made it more effective to suit our environment…the name of the game is to be efficient and quick when working within the airport environment for not only those who work here but also the traveling public.”

Depending on the time of day, bike officers can easily ride their mountain bikes through even the Atrium. However, navigating more narrow spaces in crowded areas with travelers, carry-on luggage and other obstacles can present unique challenges.

“If it gets impassable, we can park the bikes and walk the rest of the way, but we use the bikes as a force multiplier,” said Officer Travis Pardue, a retired CMPD Lieutenant who estimates he rides at least 7-10 miles inside the terminal daily. “Especially in bigger Concourses like Concourse A, we can significantly reduce the distance and improve response time.”

The bike patrol is proving effective. CMPD statistics show that, year to date, nearly every crime category tracked at the Airport has experienced double-digit decreases from 2024 to 2025. 

“I credit that to keeping our staffing at a high level and placing our officers where they need to be,” added Capt. Horner. “It’s just another asset we have at the Airport.”

Pedal Power: Bike Patrol Enhances Airport Security


Nearly two decades in the making, the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is no longer a vision or a construction site – it’s a reality. Planning began in 2008, construction started in 2019, and this month CLT celebrates completion of what CEO Haley Gentry calls “the most ambitious, most transformative project in CLT’s history.”

“It takes hundreds of companies and thousands of people involved in planning, design, construction and management of an effort this monumental,” Gentry said. “And that doesn’t even include the millions of passengers who experienced this arduous process with us. The TLE is the signature project of Destination CLT, the Airport’s $4 billion capital investment program, which also includes concourse renovations, Concourse A and E expansions, The Plaza concessions hub and a new Fourth Parallel Runway.

__By the Numbers__

Expanding the terminal lobby of the world’s sixth-busiest airport was a feat of numbers alone:

- __$608 million project__ – largest construction contract in CLT history
- __5 million man-hours__ from about 6,000 workers
- __175,000 sq. ft. of new space__, plus 191,000 renovated sq. ft.
- __146,000 sq. ft. glass canopy__ shielding passengers curbside
- __16-lane curb front__ to ease drop-off and pick-up congestion
- __11 new art installations__, including the iconic Queen Charlotte statue

The 15-foot, 3,000-pound statue of Queen Charlotte now commands the center of the lobby, framed by natural light, skybridges and subterranean walkways that improve passenger flow.

__Benefits for Passengers__

The expansion was designed with travelers in mind:

- __Security__: Consolidated from five to three checkpoints with 21 lanes, including 11 Automated Screening Lanes that process 600 more passengers per hour.
- __Baggage Claim__: Eight high-capacity carousels improve efficiency.
- __Vertical Circulation__: New escalators and elevators speed connections between ticketing and baggage claim.
- __Check-in:__ Modernized ticket counters enhance the customer experience.

__Why It Was Needed__

When CLT’s terminal opened in 1982, the Airport served 2.7 million local passengers. By 2024, that number had climbed to 9 million — a 26% jump since 2022. Overall, CLT welcomed a record 58.8 million passengers last year.

With 157 new residents moving to Charlotte daily, the old lobby could not keep up. At peak times, checkpoints overflowed into crowded hallways. The 175,000 sq. ft. of added space relieves congestion and gives travelers more breathing room.

“The project has transformed CLT,” said Chief Operating Officer Jerome Woodard. “Gone are the days of low ceilings, dark overcrowded lobbies and checkpoints bursting at the seams. Gone are the days when operations outpaced infrastructure and passengers waited outside just to enter. Today, CLT delivers a superior facility that has dramatically elevated the travel experience.”

__The Journey__

The TLE spanned six phases over nearly two decades. Early planning began in 2008, but before expansion could start, CLT had to relocate the terminal roadway, demolish two parking decks, and move the Queen Charlotte statue.

Construction began in December 2019. Key milestones included:

- Groundbreaking – December 2019
- First subterranean walkway opens – July 2022
- West ticket counters debut – March 2023

__Design Highlights__

The new lobby blends modern design with Charlotte’s character. Natural light floods the open space, anchored by Queen Charlotte’s Court. Rocking chairs, benches and colorful seating invite travelers to pause.

Architectural details reflect the region and city: scalloped ceilings echo Piedmont hills, a gold ribbon nods to Charlotte’s gold rush history, and the oculus skylight symbolizes the queen’s crown. Doorframe gingham patterns recall Charlotte’s textile industry, while shades of blue honor local sports teams.

Positive feedback about the TLE has not only been nationally, but worldwide. “Other airports are very interested in what’s going on at CLT,” said Architect Ben Goebel, Senior Vice President at Gresham Smith. “We’ve even had airports overseas asking about CLT’s signage and design.”

__Challenges Along the Way__

The five-and-a-half-year build wasn’t without a few bumps along the way. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and created uncertainty about passenger volumes. Steel shortages and social distancing required schedule adjustments.

Meanwhile, local passenger traffic surged faster than forecast, reaching 40,000-plus people on peak days in 2024. Lane closures and construction walls often greeted travelers, prompting CLT’s campaign signs: “Pardon our Royal Mess. We’re Building an Airport Fit for the Queen.”

Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine credits extensive preplanning for remaining on time and on budget. “We never had to stop and change direction. That preparation was the key to our success. Every project has hiccups, but the team delivered CLT’s most complex project ever.”

__What’s Next__

The TLE may be complete, but construction at CLT continues. Renovations are underway in Concourses D and E, scheduled to finish by 2027. A new Fourth Parallel Runway is planned for 2027, and Phase III of the Concourse A expansion is in design.

“People ask me, when will the construction ever be done?” Christine said. “And my answer is, ‘I hope never.’ If it is, it means we’ve stagnated — not only as an airport, but as a community.”

CLT Completes Landmark Terminal Lobby Expansion

As the dust finally settles on the newly finished Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE), one of the most challenging parts was building the 146,000-square-foot steel and glass canopy, which had to be constructed over the busy upper roadway. The CLT Executive Leadership Team was clear in its directive to the architects and engineers: this is an airport first and a construction site second, so minimize disruptions. 

“A lot of projects are like expanding a living room or adding something on your back deck –  it’s something you can live with,” explained architect Ben Goebel, the TLE project executive with Gresham Smith. “The terminal lobby project was like simultaneously remodeling your living room, bedroom and bathroom. It was not something you could escape daily … so you have to work around those parameters, and we did the best we could.”

__The Overnight Shift__

Most of the canopy work was done between September 2022 and June 2023 during the middle of the night.

The 63 twelve-foot-tall trusses fabricated offsite by Charlotte-based SteelFab, Inc. (over 18 months) were brought in at 2 a.m. Sections were hoisted with cranes (the heaviest weighing over 47,000 pounds), then bolted and welded into place before the roadway reopened at 5 a.m. 

The Airport project was so large (combined with COVID-related supply chain issues) that it led to a local steel shortage. The overnight work also meant traffic into the terminal had to be rerouted while lanes were closed.

“The most significant challenges came when there was an outside factor that exacerbated the impact caused by construction,” said Jerome Woodard, CLT Chief Operations Officer. “Think a vehicle accident on the roadway, or what was more common, was inclement weather that either delayed, canceled or directly impacted the construction team’s ability to complete the nightly work. These situations caused operations to proactively coordinate nightly ‘go or no go’ decisions to close the roadway to facilitate the construction.”

__Design Reflects Charlotte Region__

The swooping canopy—with a free span of nearly 160 feet—also contains 2,462 panes of glass. It’s designed to symbolically extend Queen Charlotte’s Coronation Cape and guide the eye through the glass windows back to her statue in the lobby. 

Once inside the terminal, travelers will notice design elements and color choices that reflect:

- Textiles (such as blue gingham patterns over the entrance and exit portals).
- Sports community (various shades of blue). 
- Banking and mining (gold accents that nod to Charlotte’s financial and gold rush history).
- Aerodynamics and racing (ribbon walls and wayfinding).
- Agricultural landscape of the Piedmont (the ceiling pattern mimics rows of crops).

__Passengers React__

Predictably, the transformational Terminal Lobby Expansion—which took nearly ten years and cost $608 million—both amazed and frustrated travelers who patiently dealt with the construction and dust necessary to create “An Airport Fit For A Queen.”

“Charlotte is definitely a large city, so I feel like our airport now kind of matches that expectation,” said Charlottean Brittany Alston, who flew into CLT from Miami.

“It’s much more spacious and makes Charlotte look really good,” added passenger Amy Neaves, who arrived from Paris and is headed home to Hickory. “I remember when this was all boarded up, and you came down to ground transport or to get baggage, and it looked like a war zone for a good while. And I know it took a long time, but is it worth it? Yes, absolutely!”

“It’s a massive improvement over when construction was underway, but it feels like everything is moving really smoothly,” said fellow traveler Daniel Moore. “Going through Customs was quick and easy. It feels more spacious out front, too; there’s better flow all around.”

__Moving Forward__

In addition to the canopy, the TLE project relocated the Queen Charlotte statue indoors, expanded the ticketing area, added larger checkpoints and automated exit lanes, more baggage carousels, built subterranean walkways, widened the roadways and added extra concessions and art installations.

“I hope our local customers are happy with the final product and proud of the airport,” said Jack Christine, CLT Chief Infrastructure and Development Officer. “The different upgrades we have made from a technology perspective, and a space standpoint, make their journey easier and more efficient, and make the travel experience less challenging. And yes, it’s not always going to be perfect, but if we had the lobby that we had back in 2019, it would be miserable and not fun at all.”

Now that the TLE has wrapped up, renovations continue in Concourses D and E, and new projects are already on the horizon, including a new Fourth Parallel Runway scheduled to open in Fall 2027.

Shaping CLT’s Curbside Canopy 


It’s become THE iconic airport “photo op spot”—a beautifully framed cityscape, created by careful design and a touch of luck! 

If you're seeking a breathtaking view of the Queen City—especially at sunrise—look no further than the West and East pedestrian skybridges at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Since opening in July 2024, the two overhead walkways connecting the Hourly Deck/Rental Car Facility to the terminal lobby have become known for providing some of the best unobstructed views in town.

__Taking in the View__

“So far, I’ve only been here a total of three times,” said Justin Morales, whose family took a picture as they headed back to their car. “But I think it’s a beautiful skyline, especially at night and when it’s clear, it is really pretty.”

Passengers, media, professional photographers, and others often stop to take photos of aircraft and capture Instagram-worthy shots of Uptown Charlotte. One such person is frequent flier and North Carolina native Jeff Sykes.

“I’ve been in a lot of airports, and CLT’s come a long way,” said Sykes as he took a cell phone photo. “I have shown this picture right here to quite a few people. I think it’s pretty cool how the tails of the planes line up with the city.”

__Framing Success, One Photo at a Time__

The skybridges—each approximately 152 feet long and 18 feet wide—were designed to offer safety and functionality so customers would not have to cross an active roadway with eight lanes of traffic. However, they’ve also become a “stop and pause moment” on a journey into the busy terminal.

“With the existing orientation of the building, we were very lucky. We said, ‘let’s frame the Queen City itself,’ and what a better backdrop,” said architect Ben Goebel, the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project executive with Gresham Smith. He is excited by how people have responded favorably to the walkways and the 146,000-square-foot glass canopy overhead. Goebel says the design draws inspiration from Charlotte's history and character, including the city’s signature summertime afternoon showers.

“We wanted to ensure we were protecting passengers and the public from the elements as they are loading and unloading the car,” said Goebel. “This is supposed to be the best first and last impression of the city and the last thing we want them to do is get on an airplane soaking wet. It allowed the natural light to come in and really gives a nice warm feeling.”

Labor Day is often the last hurrah for many before summer travel season ends and preparation for sweater weather begins. This holiday weekend, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is expecting more than 856,000 passengers Thursday, Aug. 28, through Tuesday, Sept. 2. That’s an 6.6% decrease compared to last year, but consistent with 2023 numbers. 

Approximately 204,000 passengers will pass through TSA security checkpoints at CLT during that timeframe, which is just 2.4% below last year’s record-high, but almost 14% above 2023. 

__Don’t Wing It – Prepare to Fly__ 

With the increased traffic, passengers are encouraged to follow these tips to help ensure a smooth travel experience.

•	Be inside the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

•	Plan to reach your parking space thirty minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal.

__Recent Airport Changes__

If you haven’t flown out of CLT in a few months, be aware of these recent changes. 

•	Checkpoint 2 became fully operational on March 26 and is the brand-new Primary TSA Pre-Check location. An estimated 204,000 passengers will undergo screening at CLT’s security checkpoints this holiday weekend. 

•	The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) no longer requires travelers to remove their shoes during the standard screening process, ending a nearly two-decade-old policy at all domestic airports.

•	TSA has partnered with CLT to launch a new program called “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease,” which offers expedited access for the U.S. Military at CLT’s TSA PreCheck (at Checkpoint 2). It includes front-of-the-line TSA screening. Service members must show a valid military ID. (Co-travelers can accompany them to the front of the checkpoint.)

•	TSA also offers two dedicated family lanes at Checkpoint 1 for those traveling with children 12 and under, as part of its “Families on the Fly” campaign.

•	REAL ID enforcement began for domestic air travel on May 7. Without one, you could face delays and enhanced screening at TSA checkpoints. If you do not have a REAL ID, check out a list of other [acceptable IDs](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification "acceptable IDs"), such as a U.S. passport. 

•	When exiting the terminal’s secured area (areas beyond the TSA checkpoints) to enter Ticketing or Baggage Claim, passengers now have more options. Three new exit lanes have opened: Exit Lane 2 (near Chick-fil-A), Exit Lane 3 (near Jersey Mike’s) and Exit Lane 4 (located in the D/E Connector). Exit Lane 1 (west of Checkpoint 1) will open in early September.

•	Uber and Lyft ride-share services have relocated from the lower-level Arrivals/Baggage Claim area to the inner lane of the upper-level Departures/Ticketing area for both drop-offs and pick-ups.

__Construction Projects to Note:__

To the delight of many (CLT especially), the Terminal Lobby Expansion is scheduled for completion in September. The project adds 175,000 square feet of new space and 191,000 square feet of renovated space to the terminal lobby. 

Renovations are underway on Concourses D and E. Both are receiving new terrazzo flooring, ceiling tiles, light fixtures, signage, HVAC units, powered gate seating, fresh paint and updated restrooms. Concourse D upgrades will wrap up in 2026, and Concourse E will finish in early 2027.

While you’re at CLT, grab a bite to eat and pick up a few travel essentials. The Airport has nearly 150 concessions. Below are the latest terminal openings to shop and dine.

__Provisions by Admirals Club Lounge__

American Airlines recently opened Provisions by Admirals Club℠ lounge on Concourse A (next to Gate A1). According to American, the space is “tailored to meet the needs of today’s traveler, offering quick access to personalized service and fresh food and beverage options, all within an intuitive, efficient layout.”

__Flights Arriving Soon__

While planning upcoming trips for this year and 2026, here are a few more destinations to book. 

American Airlines begins 10-day service to Albuquerque, N.M. (Oct. 3 – 13) for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The airline also will offer the following routes: Vail, Colo. (Dec. 18 – Jan. 5), Aspen, Colo. (Dec. 19 – March), Palm Springs, Calif. (Dec. 20 – April, Saturdays only) and Green Bay, Wis. (Nov. 2) for Panthers/Packers football game. 

Frontier Airlines recently announced three-weekly flights to Fort Lauderdale starting Nov. 21 and twice-weekly service to Detroit launching Nov. 23. 

Flights to Abu Dhabi begin next year by Etihad Airways on May 4.

Travel Smart: CLT Labor Day Tips

The peak summer travel rush has ended, and most kids returned to school in early-mid August. But if you've been to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) recently, you’ve probably noticed it’s still quite busy.

Last year, a record 58.8 million passengers traveled through CLT, and even though fall is almost officially here, plenty of passengers are still in vacation mode.

Welcome to what’s known in the travel industry as “Shoulder Season!” 

__What is Shoulder Season?__

Shoulder season is the time of year travel experts call the lull or dips (hence the phrase 'shoulder') between an area’s peak season, like summer's busiest months, and its low season. Expect fewer crowds, lower airfares, more affordable hotel rates and pleasant light sweater weather. These times can vary slightly depending on your destination.

In the U.S. (and across the Northern Hemisphere), shoulder season typically occurs in September, October and early November—before the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. March through May is also considered shoulder season, but spring break can lead to higher prices for warmer destinations. 

In Europe, shoulder season usually shifts from mid-October to mid-December. (April and May might have lower prices, but the weather can still be cool and rainy.) 

“We find travel calmer and quieter when kids are typically in school. We are traveling to Spain in September and Ireland next May,” said CLT traveler Beth Monaghan.

__The Perks of Off-Peak Travel__

“Shoulder season is a very smart and informed choice - it’s the most practical and honestly the most fun,” said Suzan Becker, a Charlotte-based travel agent and the owner of Shop France, Inc., who specializes in finding niche and unique experiences in France. “I almost don’t want the secret out now, or I will have a hard time getting hotel rooms!” she joked.

Traveler Elizabeth Warren of Charlotte says she always flies out of CLT with her sister-in-law and friends who enjoy shopping, sightseeing and soaking up the atmosphere. “We are very compatible traveling companions and have enjoyed annual trips to Paris and other fun places,” said Warren. “Once we went to Nice and Cannes in October and it was a wonderful time of the year with very few crowds and no lines.”

“I advise clients, however, to book early or as far in advance as you can after you’ve decided to travel because, nonetheless, the airlines have gotten very good at filling seats up,” added Becker. “Also, check to make sure no big events are happening at your destination. That will really drive up hotel prices.”

Shoulder season can be a sweet spot if you’re a traveler with more flexibility. You might also get a better sense of the authentic local vibe at your destination when it’s not crowded with tourists all waiting in line for the same attractions in the scorching heat.

Steeped in Savings: The Truth About Shoulder Season

For nearly forty years, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II dominated the skies during the Cold War, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. One of these military fighter jets is now the centerpiece at the Airport Overlook. It is on loan indefinitely, courtesy of the National Naval Aviation Museum (NNAM) and Navy History & Heritage Command.

“It’s a very iconic plane and easily recognizable,” said local plane spotter Markus Lachenmeir. “For Charlotte, in my opinion, it builds a bridge between older and younger generations, where many young aviation enthusiasts now have the opportunity to experience a plane close up that their grandpa may have flown years ago.”

Besides impressing visitors, the journey here to CLT is just as remarkable.

The two-seat, twin-engine, long-range fighter-bomber was one of 5,195 units produced from 1958 to 1981 and was used by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. The F4 Phantom II, sometimes called the “Rhino,” was retired from U.S. combat service in 1996, but a few countries, including Iran, Greece and Turkey, still operate it today.

__The Road to Restoration__

Two years ago, this retired aircraft was at the USS Midway Museum in California when it was taken apart and transported cross-country to CLT in February 2024 for a 10-week restoration process.

“We had to coordinate with the NNAM to get approval to loan it out and sign the agreements,” said Hunter Ballard, CLT Engineering Project Manager. “Warbirds Restoration LLC then traveled to San Diego with semi-trucks, disassembled, and brought the F4 back to North Carolina. Due to their size and weight, they had to leave the engines in California. Warbirds also had to get permits for several states they were passing through. It was a long process, but it went seamlessly due to all the planning we did.”

Once it arrived at the Airport Overlook, the restoration process began. The fighter jet was stripped, repainted and meticulously restored to its original glory (and to meet NNAM standards).

__How to See It__

Recently, the aviation news website “Simple Flying” asked ChatGPT to rank the ten best warplanes ever made. The F-4 Phantom II placed eighth due to its speed, altitude and climb records when it debuted.

This significant piece of military history is now accessible to everyone who visits the Overlook—whether they’re watching takeoffs and landings, eating at one of the fantastic food truck vendors or using the playground.

“It really grabs your attention when you arrive on site,” added Ballard. “I feel like even if you aren’t into planes, you will want to check it out and read about its story.”

It’s a familiar situation. You exit your flight, walk through the concourse and suddenly realize something is missing. Maybe it’s your keys or a scarf. Maybe you just arrived at your destination and are mentally retracing your steps, searching for your AirPods or that ring, hoping you didn’t accidentally leave them in the airport restroom. Rest assured that you are not alone.

The Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) Lost & Found receives between 600 and 700 items each week. During the busy summer travel season, that number can increase to 2,000 items a week!

__Lost But Not Forgotten__

The most common items include eyeglasses, phones, passports, laptops, iPads, Kindles, backpacks, wallets, IDs, keys, canes, books and umbrellas. Sweaters, jackets and hats are also plentiful. 

However, Lost & Found also recovers unusual items, such as false teeth, vacuum cleaners, voodoo dolls, record players, and even a few—shall we say—unmentionables. (CLT Lost & Found does not accept firearms, illegal or prohibited items, perishable goods, food or neck pillows.)

__Finding Clues__

Tracking down leads and organizing items takes a bit of research and some good old-fashioned detective work. 

Take the “Case of the Misplaced Diploma.” CLT Lost & Found needed to contact a university’s alumni office to locate a graduate to return a framed diploma left behind at the Airport. However, a name is sometimes missing, which means looking for a business card or other identifying tags that might be tucked away in a forgotten tote bag or carry-on.

In the “Case of the Forgotten Coin,” the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recovered a special coin in one of its screening bins and submitted it to CLT Lost & Found. It was a bronze challenge coin signifying service as an Honor Guard Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “When I went through TSA in Charlotte, the bin that had all of my stuff ended up turning upside down in the X-ray machine,” said Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Chuck Austin of Arizona, who guarded the Tomb from 1976-77. “Being in a hurry to get to my gate, I overlooked the fact that I was missing the coin.” 

The Lost & Found team reached out to the Society of the Honor Guard, which verified the coin, obtained an email address, and identified Austin as its grateful owner. “Thank you again for putting in the effort to find me and return one of my prized possessions,” he said. “I carry it in my left pants pocket anytime I leave the house. It’s a tradition I have honored for many years. This coin is something I could have easily replaced…but it would not have been the same.”

__Meet the Team__

Currently, four CLT employees and a supervisor are creating these “moments of magic,” as they call them. They are focused on reuniting owners with their belongings—whether a sentimental Tiffany & Co. bracelet or a child’s cherished toy—while gathering many other humorous and heartwarming stories along the way. 

“We had grandparents come in to collect their granddaughter’s stuffed Corgi, named ‘Sharon’” said one of the team. “They took our photo along with ‘Sharon’ to send to their granddaughter so she would know ‘Sharon’ was well taken care of!”

“We had another lady come to pick up her and her husband’s passports that were left at TSA, and as soon as she left, I turned around to see she left her driver's license,” recounted another team member. “When she returned the next day to pick it up, she left her phone. So, I called the emergency contact, and it was her husband. That was the third time she had left something behind. We laughed so much at the end of her visit. Her husband and I made sure she didn’t leave anything else!”

__“The Place Where the Lost Things Go”__

The location where an item is lost determines its destination. For instance, items left on an aircraft, in the gate area or on a baggage carousel are the airline’s responsibility and are taken directly to their lost and found. However, if someone sees an item on a plane and turns it into CLT Lost & Found, they will accept it, assuming the passenger or customer does not know where else to take it.

CLT Lost & Found also receives items left at TSA checkpoints and parking areas, including employee lots, shuttle buses (but not rental cars), restrooms, curbside, Concourse areas, the Atrium and the Plaza Food Court. Any item found in a specific restaurant or retail store can be reported to HMS Host or Paradies Lagardère. 

Items are held for 30 days. Those not claimed are donated to Goodwill, except for iPads, Laptops, and Kindles, which are held longer to allow more time to find their owners. Other items with personal details may need to be shredded, mailed back to a passport agency or disposed of safely. 

Claimed recovered items can be shipped back to their owners at their expense. 

__How To File A Claim__

Left it Behind? We’ve Got You Covered

For many travelers, stepping into an Airport Club or Lounge offers a welcome break from their hectic travels. A credit card or a membership fee is usually required. 

However, a spot at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) stands out as even more “exclusive,” and guess what? It’s free and reserved for our active duty, reserve, or retired military members. It offers a space for them to relax, grab a snack, use the restroom or even enjoy gaming.

__Record-Breaking Visitor Numbers__

CLT Airport’s USO (United Service Organizations) Center is one of three Airport USO Centers in North Carolina, along with Fayetteville Regional Airport (FAY) and Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU). Additionally, CLT is the busiest USO Center among over 250 worldwide. 

It opened in 2006 in the space previously occupied by a British Airways and Lufthansa Lounge. With a capacity of just 100, it often has lines out the door during peak travel times and averages 500 guests daily. July 2024 was one of its busiest months on record, with one guest checking in every 45 seconds!

Center Operations Specialist Peter Amendola attributes this to Charlotte’s location. “You have Camp LeJeune, Fort Bragg, Fort Jackson, and so you have all these installations nearby, number one,” Amendola said. “And with Charlotte being a hub for American Airlines, that brings a lot of traffic from other areas.” 

All that foot traffic means many hungry soldiers, sometimes accompanied by family members. Rebecca DelPrado and her husband, Trevonn Smith, traveled through CLT from Guam after his three-year deployment to visit family in Florida.

__CLT Partners Pitch In__

While the USO budgets for water, soda, snacks, and coffee, it heavily relies on bulk donations from Airport partners. The Center uses about 2,400 bottles of water and forty cases of soda in just one week.

“We have over 20 Travel Essential/Brand concepts that help support the USO, totaling $750K in-kind donations yearly,” said Sam Willhite, Paradies Lagardère Regional Director of Operations & Business Development.

Meanwhile, HMS Host provides essential food staples such as lunch meat, cheese, milk, along with other retail items and refreshments, according to Matt Wissman, HMS Host's Executive Director of Operations. "We also support the USO's holiday event Operation Victory Block when thousands of service members pass through CLT as they head home for the holidays.”

The CLT USO Center states that it would often run low on supplies if it had to rely solely on its budget. They note that donations have a significant benefit for service members and their families.

“It does a lot, I mean just being a retiree or active duty, you know sometimes they fly or have layovers for 36 hours and they are trying to get home, or wherever they are going to, and they come here and it is just like a sigh of relief,” said Isaac White, USO Center Operations Specialist. “And if they can get a recliner or a free bottle of water instead of paying $6, it makes a big difference…it’s a morale booster!”

__How To Help__

Neck pillows, earbuds and accessories such as adapters and charging cords are also needed. Anyone who wants to help can donate at participating Paradies retailers or contact the CLT USO Center on the upper level of the Atrium.

USO Center Relies on Donor Support to Serve Our Heroes

The City of Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) are experiencing a growth spurt.

A new study by the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance predicts that the Charlotte area’s population will increase by 50% by 2050, rising from 3 million to 4.6 million residents.

CLT is now the sixth busiest airport worldwide for aircraft operations and the second largest hub for American Airlines. In 2024, the Airport handled a record 58.8 million passengers, about 30% of whom were local travelers. 

That’s why CLT—owned and operated by the City of Charlotte—is expanding and upgrading its infrastructure. This is done using a combination of federal grants, passenger facility charges and airport revenue bonds, but no local tax dollars.

In May 2025, the Airport priced and sold $291 million in airport revenue bonds to help finance two critical components of the Destination CLT Program—the new Fourth Parallel Runway and Concourse D renovations. “A bond is nothing more than a loan,” said CLT Chief Financial Officer Michael Hill. “Instead of going to the bank to get a traditional loan or mortgage, the Airport makes a pool of investment bonds available for competitive sale to investors. These investors let us ‘borrow’ their money in exchange for paying an agreed-upon interest rate over time… and that is driven by the Airport’s credit ratings, which are similar to your personal credit score.”

__Sound Financial Management Rewarded__

CLT is one of a dozen airports in the country with an AA credit rating, the highest an airport can receive. Hill says this rating directly reflects the strength of the Charlotte region, airline passenger activities and conservative financial stewardship.

A bond is paid back through CLT’s various revenue streams, such as parking charges, concessions, passenger facility charges, airline landing fees and rents. 

What makes CLT bonds so attractive for investors? A high credit rating—which gives investors confidence in a timely return with interest—and a prestigious industry award certainly help.

The Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) recently recognized CLT as the most financially efficient airport in North America's over 40 million passenger category for the third consecutive year, based on 2023 financial data. The task force analyzed 205 airports worldwide, focusing on productivity, efficiency, cost competitiveness, and financial results.

“To be recognized again by ATRS affirms the core of our mission and vision,” said Hill. “To connect the world by valuing people, partnerships and productivity and to be the hub of choice with innovative experiences and superior facilities.”

__Upcoming Bonds Aim to Fuel Growth__

CLT will likely return to the bond market in late Spring 2026 to complete funding for the Fourth Parallel Runway Project, which is set to open in Fall 2027. 

According to Hill, anyone can purchase a CLT Airport Revenue Bond. Each bond is $5,000 in denomination and has a stated interest rate. Brokerage firms like eTrade, Charles Schwab, and JP Morgan Investments sell the bonds competitively in the secondary market. 

“So, if you own mutual (bond) funds in your 401(k) or individual brokerage account, there’s a good chance you already own some CLT Bonds!”

Funding CLT’s Future – Successful Bond Sale & Efficiency Award 

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer require travelers to remove their shoes during the standard screening process, ending a nearly two-decade-old policy at all domestic airports. 

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem officially announced the change on July 8, 2025.

“Thanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards,” said Secretary Noem.

__TSA Ends Footwear Removal Policy__

Previously, travelers were required to remove their shoes s at security checks unless they had TSA PreCheck. The agency says ending the “Shoes-Off” policy will simplify passenger screening, increase traveler satisfaction, and reduce wait times. TSA will continue a layered security approach, including REAL ID implementation. Since enforcement began on May 7, 2025, airport checkpoints nationwide have seen a 94% compliance rate. (In North Carolina, the compliance rate is 95% of passengers arriving at a checkpoint with either a state-issued REAL ID or an acceptable form of ID, such as a passport.)

__Military Fast Track Screening__

Changes are also afoot for the military community and families traveling through Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and other select airports.

As part of a nationwide campaign, TSA has partnered with CLT to launch a new program called “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease,” which offers expedited access for the U.S. Military at CLT’s TSA PreCheck (at Checkpoint 2). It includes:

- Front-of-the-line TSA screening.

- Active-duty armed forces members, Reserve, National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard and Reserve, Military Service Academy students, DOD employees, the U.S. Coast Guard and Reserve, NOAA, and U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS).

- Service members must show a valid military ID. (Co-travelers can accompany them to the front of the checkpoint.)

“Expanding TSA PreCheck benefits will directly assist the more than 100,000 active-duty service members and their families stationed in our region,” said Gregory Hawko, TSA Federal Security Director for North Carolina. “TSA is committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of military families by ensuring their travel is convenient and stress-free.”

__Family Lanes Make Travel Easier__

Good news for families flying during the busy summer travel season! TSA has launched a new campaign called “Families on the Fly” for those traveling with children 12 and younger at select U.S. Airports.

CLT began offering two dedicated family lanes at Checkpoint 1 on Monday, July 14, 2025.

- Two dedicated family lanes

- Checkpoint 1

- Children 12 and under

__New American Airlines "Provisions" Lounge__

American Airlines will introduce a new, first-of-its-kind space called the “Provisions by Admirals Club” lounge in late summer 2025. It will be located on Concourse A next to gate A1 at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). 

Airline officials say the Provisions lounge is a new concept that is simple, streamlined and convenient for travelers with limited time during their journey who may want a quick snack.

__Hit The Slopes – Limited Winter Service to Vail__

And just in time for the holiday ski season: American Airlines is launching new once-a-day nonstop service to Vail, CO (Eagle County Airport – EGE) from December 18, 2025 – Jan. 5, 2026.

CLT is the second-largest hub for Dallas-Fort Worth-based American Airlines.

What’s New at CLT – Keep Your Shoes On

Even if you don’t fly private, general aviation probably touches your life.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Fixed Base Operator (FBO) is home to more than just corporate jets and charter flights. It offers many services, and effective July 1, 2025, it has a new name and management.
Modern Aviation took over management of CLT’s FBO at the CLT Executive Terminal—previously managed by Wilson Air Center for the past twenty years. 

FBOs provide general aviation services such as fueling, hangar space, parking, ground handling, maintenance and passenger amenities for non-commercial aircraft, such as corporate jets and privately owned planes.

__Why Charlotte?__

Charlotte’s FBO is among the busiest in the country. FAA data from 2024 ranked CLT as the 30th busiest general aviation airport in the U.S. 

Modern Aviation officials say those statistics made Charlotte a desirable market.

“Charlotte has become a major hub for finance, manufacturing and technology in the last decade, with a growing reputation as a preferred city for corporate relocation and new business startups given its skilled workforce, business-friendly policies and proximity to key hubs along the East Coast,” said Mark Carmen, Modern Aviation’s CEO. “Charlotte also hosts major sporting and cultural events throughout the year, attracting large numbers of private jets.”

Modern Aviation CLT currently has 28 based tenants, over 66 based aircraft and served 323 airline charters in the last year. It also serves air ambulance and organ donor flights, military aircraft, air cargo operators, flight instruction schools and aerial photographers. 

__Upgrades Coming__

The CLT Executive Terminal experienced a 5% increase in total aircraft operations in 2024, surpassing the less than 1% growth in the overall general aviation industry. 

Modern Aviation is working closely with the Airport and City of Charlotte to monitor growth forecasts as it plans upgrades to the CLT Executive Terminal. 

“The terminal renovation project will enhance the experience for all stakeholders, including passengers, tenants, pilots and employees. Modern Aviation will focus on creating a variety of modern yet comfortable spaces for passengers, tenants, and pilots to relax, socialize or work,” added Carmen. “Our goal is to make the CLT Executive Terminal a place passengers and pilots want to arrive early before their flight to enjoy all the amenities. Further, the front desk and line crew workroom will be strategically positioned and designed to optimize the flow of operations and enhance both safety and efficiency.”

Look for construction on those upgrades to begin in late 2025 or early 2026. 

__First Impressions Matter__

For many business leaders arriving in the Queen City, Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s FBO is the City's front door.

“Industry leaders visit the FBO on a daily basis when coming to Charlotte to make critical decisions such as relocating their headquarters or finalizing business deals that have the potential to bring millions of dollars of economic impact to Charlotte,” said Vince Papke, Modern Aviation CLT General Manager, who credits the FBO with helping to lure the NASCAR Hall of Fame here.

Added Papke: “FBO team members are the first to greet business leaders as they step off their aircraft and the last faces they see when departing. We take that role seriously and consider ourselves Ambassadors for the City of Charlotte, so it’s important that we provide the world-class service that is expected and operate safely.”

General Aviation at CLT Gets “Modern”ized

__HMSHost Bartender Marks Milestone__

When Janice Futrell began working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in the summer of 1975, “Jaws” was scaring moviegoers, Gerald Ford was president and America was dancing to “The Hustle.” There was no internet or cell phones, and the country’s bicentennial was still a year away. 

The 18-year-old arrived at her CLT job interview wearing blue jeans, a t-shirt and flip-flops.

Futrell started working in the coffee shop at the old Airport terminal, then moved to the Cardinal Lounge three months later. “It was dark and dimly lit, and the late actor Peter Graves (Mission: Impossible, Airplane) always came in and hid in the back corner so nobody would see him,” she recalled.

In 1982, she moved into the new Airport terminal when it opened, where she met everyone from NASCAR drivers to actor Martin Lawrence and Cheech & Chong.

July 2025 marks Janice's 50th anniversary at CLT, and she is a fixture at the “First in Flight” bar in the Atrium, operated by HMSHost by Avolta. Her bartending shift begins at 6:30 a.m., and she is always busy. By 8:30 a.m. on this particular Wednesday, she is already serving beers to customers heading to Florida and espresso martinis to a trio of female travelers. 

“Time is irrelevant at the airport,” joked the 68-year-old, who enjoys engaging with passengers and asking them about their journeys. The Charlotte, N.C., native says a half-century in the same job has never gotten old.

“The way I see it is, yes, I’m in the same place all the time, but in my office, I look out the window and see airplanes, the sky and people walking by — it’s amazing!” she said. “I don’t see four walls, and it’s not like a local bar or restaurant where you always see the same people. I get to meet people from all over the world. You ask people where they’ve already been, and then you know the right places to go.” 

Janice has witnessed five decades of development at CLT and several world-changing events, from 9/11 to the COVID pandemic. She says the growth of CLT to the sixth busiest Airport in the world for aircraft operations still astonishes her.

“The growth of the Airport means the growth of the city. Because if the Airport weren’t growing the way it is, the city would not have,” she added. “And it’s like Charlotte went boom and is catching up with Atlanta.”

When asked about the “R” word, she says yes; retirement might happen. Janice has contemplated retiring next year but worries she might get bored. “I don’t want to be one of those people who stay home, and their circle gets small.”

When she's not working, she loves tending her garden, planting flowers and spending time with family. The mother of four, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of six says she also wants to visit Greece, Germany and Ireland with her husband, Dan.

The longtime bartender calls her “Airport sons and daughters,” her second family, and has built strong friendships with regular customers, many of whom text her when they pass through the terminal. 

“Some are retired and still come by to see me. They send their family members to meet me, which means a lot," she grinned. "I waited on a guy yesterday I’ve known for years, and I finally got to meet his wife when they traveled together for a change. That was very nice.”

Unlike the beloved TV show “Cheers,” Janice admits she doesn’t know everyone’s name. She says she’s terrible with names but never forgets a face. “There’s a lot of them that I stay in touch with. They have my number.”

A Toast to Time: 50 Years of Hospitality at CLT 

When the new 10,000-foot Fourth Parallel Runway opens at Charlotte Douglas International Airport 
(CLT) in the fall of 2027, it will join three existing parallel runways, all of which run in a north-south direction. 

Currently, CLT has Runways 18R-36L, 18C-36C and 18L-36R.

However, from May 2026 through September 2026, all three current runways will be renumbered. 

This change is being made for system-wide consistency, safety and compliance with FAA standards and regulations. The timeline also gives pilots enough time to adjust to the changes and for aviation charts to be updated and synchronized—a process that happens every 56 days.

Changing the runway numbers takes a lot of time and manpower. Besides repainting the new numbers—which are 60 feet tall and 20 feet wide depending on the digits—CLT Airfield Maintenance and contractors must update over 120 physical markings and replace dozens of signs. Airside Operations makes sure everything meets standards. 

__The Challenge Of Parallel Runways__

Why are these enormous white markings so important? The numbers offer both a visual cue for pilots and a cross-reference with cockpit instruments, ensuring they are aligned with the correct runway. 

“It is a requirement for precision runways at commercial airports like CLT and assists pilots 
during poor weather and limited visibility,” said Trent Sellers, CLT Airport Planning Project Coordinator.

While multiple parallel runways are common at busy airports (CLT is currently ranked 6th worldwide for aircraft operations), they present specific challenges. 

Because only three runways in the same orientation can be designated as Left, Center or Right, CLT’s fourth parallel runway needed a new designation to prevent confusion or errors for pilots and air traffic controllers.

Therefore, it has been adjusted by one digit (ten degrees), along with the two existing runways on either side. The fourth parallel will be designated Runway 1C-19C. The airport's original runway (18L-36R) will keep the same magnetic heading but will now be called Runway 18-36.

__Here’s what the changes will look like:__

- Runway 18R-36L    becomes   1L-19R
- Fourth Parallel             1C-19C
- Runway 18C-36C    becomes   1R-19L

__How are they numbered? Think of a compass.__

The most straightforward explanation of runway numbering is to think of a compass and the nearest magnetic headings:  360 degrees is north, 90 degrees is east, 180 degrees is south, and 270 degrees is west. 

- Runway numbers designate which direction the runway is pointing and go from 1 to 36. 

- To name a runway, you round it to the nearest ten-degree magnetic heading and remove the last zero. 

- For example, if the runway is closest to 360 degrees on a compass, it becomes Runway 36 (pronounced three six), 180 becomes Runway 18 (pronounced one eight), 190 becomes Runway 19 (pronounced one nine), etc. 

- The letter designation of L, R or C stands for Left, Right or Center and further differentiates parallel runways. 

- The reciprocal end of a runway will always be 180 degrees opposite.

__Other Airfield Changes__

Other recent changes on the airfield include the new North End Around Taxiway (NEAT) and South End Around Taxiway (SEAT), which will enable aircraft to avoid crossing an existing runway, and the new Fourth Parallel Runway, which will enhance airfield safety and operational efficiency. 

And if you’re wondering whether a Fifth Parallel Runway might ever be built at CLT, it's possible. On the current Airport Layout Plan, it would be constructed on land east of the Air National Guard base, just west of Billy Graham Parkway—but that is likely decades away.

__Hagar Family Foundation Gives Back__

If you grab a taco or tequila at the newly opened Sammy Hagar’s Beach Bar & Grill on Concourse D, know that it’s rock 'n' roll cuisine for a good cause!

On June 24, the Red Rocker and former Van Halen lead singer visited Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to open the restaurant. According to the musician’s official website, the Hagar Family Foundation has donated over $4 million to local charities since its founding in 2008. In Charlotte, the beneficiaries will be Levine Children’s Hospital and the Hope Street Food Pantry.

“This generous support will help us expand our reach into the communities that need food the most by growing our library mobile food pantries in collaboration with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library,” said Melody Leedy, Founder/Director of Hope Street Food Pantry. “ We are grateful for this partnership that turns compassion into impact, and we invite others to join us in this mission to bring hope to every corner of Charlotte.”

Hagar, who grew up with limited means and relied on public assistance, said it ultimately fueled his success. “It drives me to want to give back and show kids that if you work hard, there’s going to be an open door out.”

Rock 'n Roll Cuisine for a Cause 

You packed your swimsuit, a beach hat and a good book. Now, you need to navigate Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) on your way to your summer travel destination. 

And with the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) nearing completion, there are several changes to be aware of, especially if you haven’t visited in a while. “If you only travel once every summer, it’s totally different than last summer when you came through here,” said Jerome Woodard, CLT Chief Operating Officer.

Approximately 8.1 million passengers are expected to depart from CLT during the summer travel period, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This figure is about 8% lower than 2024 levels and 2.5% higher than 2023 levels.

__The Busiest Days__

During the Independence Day Holiday - from Friday, July 4 through Tuesday, July 8 - CLT anticipates 925,000 passenger arrivals and departures. That’s a 2.5% decrease from the same period last year.

The busiest travel days are expected to be:
- Thursday, July 3,
- Sunday, July 6, and 
- Monday, July 7

To help ensure a smooth journey, below are recent changes at CLT this year to be aware of:

__Ride Share Relocated – Here’s Where to Go__
- Uber and Lyft ride-share services have relocated from the lower-level Arrivals/Baggage Claim area to the inner lane of the upper-level Departures/Ticketing area for both drop-offs and pick-ups.

“That has been a home run,” said Woodard. “We have received a lot of positive feedback. Operationally, it has been hugely impactful in reducing traffic and improving traffic flow.”

__Checkpoint 2 Open, Exit Lane 4 Closure Dates__

- Checkpoint 2 became fully operational on March 26 and is the brand-new Primary TSA Pre-Check location. This means that Checkpoints 1, 2 and 3 are now all operational.

CLT has consolidated its five previous checkpoints into three larger ones, adding four additional screening lanes for a total of 21 lanes, which includes 11 Automated Screening Lanes (ASL). The TSA estimates that it will be able to screen 600 more passengers per hour. 

- Exit Lane 4 on Concourse D/E Connector remains partially closed for overnight shutdowns from June 26 to July 11 to allow for terrazzo and overhead repair work. 

- Signage will direct customers through the Atrium and to Exit Lane 2, located next to Chick-fil-A.

__REAL ID Enforced – CLT Compliance Strong__

- As of May 7, REAL ID enforcement began for domestic air travel. Without one, you could face delays and enhanced screening at TSA Checkpoints.

TSA says REAL ID compliance at CLT has been robust, with 92.3% of travelers now presenting an acceptable form of ID at checkpoints. Passengers may also use a passport if they do not have a REAL ID.

__Opa! New Nonstop Route to Greece__

American Airlines began seasonal non-stop service to Athens, Greece (ATH) on June 5 with a gate celebration featuring dancers, food and two Greek Orthodox priests who blessed the passengers and plane.

The new Athens route will operate through September 2025 and is currently CLT’s longest, at approximately 10 hours and 20 minutes and 5,500 miles.
