July’s Noise Advisory Forum (NAF) brought together more than 30 community members interested in learning more about aircraft noise and long-term Airport planning and development. The July 8 meeting at the CLT Center was the third of four meetings this year.

Neighborhoods represented at the recent NAF included Berewick, Belmont, Southpark, Mountain Island Lake, Little Rock Crossing, Cooley Hills and the River District, as well as cities outside the Charlotte area, such as Fort Mill, S.C. and Lake Wylie, S.C.

The NAF was established last year to foster open and constructive dialogue between the City of Charlotte Aviation Department and impacted communities. 

Mooresville resident and former Airport Community Roundtable (ACR) Board Member Kevin Vesely said his ongoing concern is that arriving aircraft descend too quickly and remain at low altitudes longer than necessary before landing.

“When you watch the planes land on FlightAware.com, you can clearly see they’re coming in at 10,000 feet, and then 3,900 feet, and they continue for 20 or 30 miles,” said Vesely. “When they come down like this, they go across all our neighborhoods and make noise.”

__NEPA & Possible Flight Path Changes__

Attendees at the July meeting also learned more about the Airport’s Master Plan 2050 and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which outlines how flight path changes will be evaluated with the addition of CLT’s new Fourth Parallel Runway.

The new 10,000-foot runway (1C-19C) will be used primarily for departures and will enhance overall airfield operational efficiency.

“We want to first avoid environmental impacts,” said Michael Pilarski, CLT Airport Planning Program Manager. “If we can’t avoid them outright, we want to minimize those impacts, and if that is still difficult, we will mitigate to the best of our abilities. And as the NEPA process unfolds, public input is a major part, so we want to hear from you. Having community interest is critical and very important to us.”

Possible operational changes could include adopting divergent headings—which would spread post-takeoff flight paths over a wider area—and eliminating the current two-mile turning restriction, allowing departing aircraft to turn sooner.

Public meetings are expected later this year. Community members are encouraged to watch for future announcements with details on meeting dates, locations and opportunities to participate.

The Airport will consider those comments and make recommendations based on the environmental assessment of the new runway, which is underway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will then review those recommendations and make its own.

The Fourth Parallel Runway is scheduled to be commissioned in late September 2027.

__Improved Noise Complaint Form & Mobile Webform__

CLT has unveiled an improved [noise complaint form](https://www.planenoise.com/cltairportnoise/ "Noise Complaint Form") for those who need it. July NAF attendees also received the first preview of CLT’s new mobile webform – designed to make submitting and tracking noise concerns easier and more accessible.

CLT is one of the busiest airports in the world for aircraft operations, with more than 1,600 daily arrivals and departures to more than 190 destinations. The Airport plays a vital role in the Carolinas’ economy, generating an estimated $40 billion in economic impact and supporting 185,000 jobs annually.

Aircraft noise is a reality of any busy airport, and CLT recognizes that it can impact nearby communities, which is why CLT remains dedicated to transparent communication with the public.

Noise Forum Draws Strong Attendance

Race Day is Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 am. 

“Community members began reaching out about registration as early as December 2025,” said Sterling Patterson, CLT Community Engagement Coordinator. “We love how popular this event has become among area residents and beyond.”

Last year, the race sold out in under three hours. This year, it sold out in approximately 15 minutes, showing the growing popularity and size of the CLT Runway 5K. 

“We had such interest from our partners that we had to close our request for sponsors,” added Patterson. “In response, we are delighted to offer several new, exclusive packages, allowing even more organizations to join us at the Runway 5K.” 

In 2007, the event had only 500 participants. In 2025, ten of the 1,600 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers who crossed the finish line traveled more than 1,000 miles, including four from abroad. Next year, the event will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The October 18, 2025, race was a record-breaking event, raising $90,930. Since 2019, CLT has raised over $317,000 for Central Piedmont Opportunity Scholarships – more than doubling the original goal. 

The Runway 5K has been so successful that CLT announced an endowed scholarship at Central Piedmont earlier this year, the “Charlotte Douglas International Airport Scholarship Fund.” The endowed scholarship will support students pursuing aviation-related careers and ensure CLT’s charitable impact at Central Piedmont continues.

“The Runway 5K is one of our flagship events and demonstrates how we build connections between the Airport and our surrounding neighbors. It is always a favorite among our entire Community Engagement team," according to Patterson.

To date, 30 students from Mecklenburg County have received CLT Airport Opportunity Scholarships.

Sold Out: Runway 5K Sets New Record

For the fourth consecutive year, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has been named North America’s most financially efficient airport among those serving more than 40 million passengers. 

The prestigious industry award, presented by the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), is based on 2024 financial year data. The ATRS is a global academic and industry organization that evaluates airports worldwide, focusing on several aspects of airport operations, including productivity and efficiency, cost competitiveness, financial performance and airport charges.

“This recognition is a validation of our effort to support growth and opportunity for the residents of the Charlotte region!” said Michael Hill, CLT Chief Financial Officer. “When we operate efficiently, we keep airline costs competitive, which helps sustain and grow air service. That connectivity is a major driver of business activity, tourism and job creation across the region. It also means we can reinvest in infrastructure, which enables growth and supports existing and new jobs for our citizens.”

__CLT’s Economic Impact__ 

CLT is owned and operated by the City of Charlotte. It has an annual economic impact of $40 billion in the Carolinas region, which is about 5% of the state of North Carolina's entire domestic product.

Infrastructure projects, such as the recently completed Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) and the Fourth Parallel Runway project (on schedule to open in fall 2027), are funded through a combination of federal grants, passenger facility charges and airport revenue bonds, with no local tax dollars.

CLT is currently the seventh-busiest airport in the world for aircraft operations (arrivals and departures) and the second-largest hub for American Airlines. In 2025, the Airport handled 53.6 million passengers, with almost 35% of those passengers originating in Charlotte.

Hill explained that airlines base decisions on the strength of the local market, cost, reliability and long-term financial predictability.

A ranking like this reinforces CLT’s financial model and can be a game changer for bringing new and exciting destinations, and even new carriers, into the market. 

“That matters because lower operating costs create value for the airlines and an environment which encourages growth and expansion, not only for our hubbing carrier (American Airlines) but for all airlines serving the Airport,” added Hill. 

“An efficient cost structure also reduces barriers to entry for new airlines to initiate service to CLT, as evidenced by the introduction of new service by Etihad with non-stop service to Abu Dhabi earlier this spring. Financial efficiency also lets the airlines know they’re partnering with an airport that manages growth responsibly, which reduces risk for long-term route planning.”

__Conveniently Connecting CLT to the World__

The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance cites regional connectivity as the city’s greatest asset.

Charlotte is ideally positioned midway between New York City and Miami, and CLT offers more than 194 nonstop destinations worldwide, so you can go almost anywhere without the inconvenience of a layover.

“The level of air service at CLT is far beyond what can be supported by the local community alone,” said CLT’s Hill. “CLT’s financial efficiency is largely credited for the level of commercial aircraft operations and the number of destinations served with non-stop flights. This level of service is a key contributor to the region’s growth and provides tremendous convenience to our citizens who would otherwise need to connect through other airport facilities.”

Why Airport Financial Health Matters


Big changes are underway on the CLT airfield, and now is your chance to own a small part of its past.

As part of CLT Airport’s ongoing runway redesignation project, a retired airfield sign from former Runway 18C-36C is being offered to the public through a special sweepstakes, Runway ReSIGNed.

The sign was removed during the recent redesignation of Runway 18C-36C to Runway 1R-19L, a change made in preparation for the Airport’s future Fourth Parallel Runway. The sweepstakes provides aviation enthusiasts and community members across the Carolinas with a unique opportunity to own a piece of CLT history.

__Entries will be accepted through Aug. 11 at 11:59 p.m.__ One winner will be selected to receive the retired runway sign.

“From the moment we first asked on social media whether we should give away a retired runway sign, it was clear how connected people are to CLT’s history,” said Virginia Lane, CLT Social Media Manager. “We received hundreds of comments from individuals sharing memories tied to specific runways, stories of time spent watching aircraft at CLT and the sign they would choose if given the opportunity. 

“This sign represents more than airfield infrastructure, it is a piece of the Airport’s story,” added Lane. “This sweepstakes is an opportunity to celebrate the aviation enthusiasts who help preserve that history. I am especially looking forward to meeting the winner in person, hearing their story and seeing the excitement on their face as they receive a unique piece of CLT history."

Win a Retired Runway Sign

JetBlue is back in action at CLT after a nearly 20-year run. The Airport welcomed JetBlue with a water cannon salute on the airfield.

The popular low-cost carrier operated in Charlotte from July 2006 until it left in October 2024. 
The airline celebrated its return to the Queen City on July 9 at Gate A-29, with balloons and cupcakes for first-day passengers bound for the Sunshine State. 

__Nonstop to Fort Lauderdale, FL__

JetBlue will offer three daily nonstop flights from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Friends Gia Baker, Persona Bell, and Kendra Washington were among the first to board. The women were headed to Miami, Florida, to board a cruise and had never flown JetBlue before. 

“I looked at options on Priceline, and it was the most affordable option,” said Washington. “It was cheaper to just fly to Fort Lauderdale, and they gave us a free carry-on, so why not?”

According to the company website, [JetBlue expects to operate nearly 130 daily departures from Fort Lauderdale this summer](https://news.jetblue.com/latest-news/press-release-details/2026/JetBlue-Launches-Largest-Ever-Fort-Lauderdale-Schedule-Reinforcing-Long-Term-Commitment-to-South-Florida/default.aspx "Press Release"), marking the airline’s largest operation from that airport - over 75% more daily flights than in 2025.

In addition to Charlotte, JetBlue is also adding nonstop service from FLL to Baltimore, Cleveland, Nashville, Detroit, Houston, Chicago and Puerto Rico.

“We’re building on our already strong foundation by adding more destinations, creating more connections and giving customers even more reasons to choose JetBlue,” said JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty.

In early May, JetBlue stepped up to assist Spirit Airlines customers and employees affected by Spirit’s shutdown by offering $99 rescue fares to stranded passengers and jump seats to crew members trying to get home.

JetBlue’s return to Charlotte brings CLT’s current number of airlines (domestic and foreign flag carriers) to twelve.

JetBlue Returns to CLT 

Passengers may not immediately notice the airfield changes, but for pilots and air traffic controllers, recent updates to CLT’s extensive runway pavement markings and signage are crucial. 

The large numbers serve as both a visual cue for pilots and a cross-reference for cockpit instruments, ensuring alignment with the correct runway during takeoffs and landings.

__Second Runway Redesignated – Meet 1R-19L__

In early July, the airfield reconfiguration reached its next milestone when the second of CLT’s three current runways was temporarily closed, then redesignated, repainted and given new signage. 

The latest transformation occurred overnight, from July 8 to July 9, when Runway 18C-36C officially became Runway 1R-19L. __Fun fact__: The last departure from the former 18C was American Airlines flight 1674 to Seattle (SEA).

Crews replaced 64 vertical sign panels and 23 surface-painted signs and markings. (The westernmost runway was redesignated back in May.)

“Closing a runway for any length of time can be a challenge,” said Trent Sellers, CLT Airport Planning Project Coordinator. “Closing a runway for a period of 12 hours has taken close to a year to plan, prepare and coordinate with our stakeholders.”

__Preparing for the Fourth Parallel__

The changes are underway to make way for CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway, which will eventually become the __new__ center runway and be designated __1C-19C__. The Fourth Parallel is scheduled to be commissioned in fall 2027. 

Here is how the runways will look when complete:

__Why all the Renumbering?__

CLT will soon have four parallel runways. While multiple parallel runways are common at busy airports (CLT is currently ranked seventh worldwide for aircraft operations), they present specific challenges. 

Because only three runways in the same orientation can be designated Left, Center, or Right,[ CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway needed a new designation ](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/whats-in-a-number-clts-new-fourth-parallel-runway-1c-19c/ "What's In A Number? Runway Numbering Explained.")to prevent confusion or errors among pilots and air traffic controllers.

Therefore, it has been adjusted by one digit (ten degrees), along with the two existing parallel runways on either side. 

The new Fourth Parallel Runway will be designated Runway 1C-19C. The Airport’s original runway (18L-36R) will retain the same magnetic heading but will be designated Runway 18-36.

The airfield reconfiguration will ensure system-wide consistency, safety and compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and regulations. The timeline also provides pilots with sufficient time to adjust to the changes and for aviation charts to be updated and synchronized.

Airfield Redesignation Continues


If you’re wondering which destinations are shaping up to be this summer’s hottest tickets, think Florida sunshine, Windy City fun and grabbing a pint at a pub or a cocktail on the beach.

CLT’s airline partners have more than 7.8 million seats on market between July and September (including seats already purchased and those still available for purchase), and their schedules reflect expected strong demand for certain destinations.

The top five domestic and international destinations for July, based on seats on market, are:

__CLT - Connecting More People__

According to the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, 157 people are moving to the Charlotte region every day. 

Local (originating) passenger traffic at CLT has also increased. In 2015, only 26% of passengers began their journeys in Charlotte. By 2026, that share had risen to 35.4% of total passenger volume.

“Charlotteans want to fly!” said CLT Airline Affairs Manager Kaitlyn Price. “That population and passenger growth allows our airline partners to grow here, too.”

__The Blue is Back__

One popular airline returning to CLT is JetBlue, which operated in Charlotte for nearly twenty years before leaving in October 2024.

The low-cost carrier will offer three daily nonstop flights from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL) beginning July 9.

According to the company, JetBlue expects to operate nearly 130 daily departures from Fort Lauderdale this summer, marking the airline’s largest operation from that airport - over 75% more daily flights than in 2025.

In early May, JetBlue stepped up to assist Spirit Airlines customers and employees affected by Spirit’s shutdown by offering $99 rescue fares to stranded passengers and jump seats to crew members trying to get home.

__More Flights, More To Explore__

JetBlue brings CLT’s total number of airlines to 12, including 4 foreign-flag carriers, connecting more people around the world. 

In July 2026, CLT will serve 44 international destinations and 188 nonstop destinations. (That number can fluctuate depending on the time of year and seasonal routes.)

CLT’s Airline Affairs team is always talking to current carriers about expanding routes and new carriers about starting service here.

“Our job is to do the research and present clear, data-driven business cases to our airline partners showing them which routes are underserved at CLT,” added Price. “We continue to have those conversations with them and look forward to seeing which new routes take shape.”

__Daily Service to Abu Dhabi__

One of the most successful new carriers at CLT is Etihad Airways, which arrived on March 20, 2025.

After starting with just four flights per week, Etihad Airways now offers daily nonstop service from CLT to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), through Sept. 8.

It is CLT’s longest route to date and the first to the Middle East, offering one-stop access to more than 40 destinations across the Indian Subcontinent, Africa and Asia.

Etihad is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates.

__American Resumes Nonstop Service to Athens, Extends Paris Service__

American Airlines has its second-largest hub at CLT and is the Airport's largest carrier.

The airline is celebrating its 100th anniversary and has made significant investments using new tools and technology, including its mobile app, to enhance the travel experience by enabling customers to check in, prepay for bags, select seats and receive real-time updates.

“We’ve also made recent upgrades to the mobile app, giving customers complete control to spend less time waiting and instead provide an alternative route when plans change,” said American Airlines Customer Care Director Nisha Majaraj. “Customers will also receive a notification to gain a better understanding of the exact reason for a delay or disruption.”

So, if you are looking to visit ancient Greek ruins, enjoy fine French cuisine, or visit Happy Valley, here’s your chance to do all three.

- American Airlines has resumed its nonstop summer service to Athens, Greece (ATH) through October 23, 2026. The 10-hour nonstop flight from CLT to Athens started last June.
- AA has also extended its seasonal, daily non-stop service to Paris (CDG) through Jan. 2.
- Beginning October 5, American Airlines will begin twice-daily service to State College, Pennsylvania –  home of Penn State University. 
- Beginning Dec. 2, AA will offer twice daily service from CLT to Naples, FL.

Airline Schedules Reveal Summer Demand


Let the Independence Day celebrations begin! CLT is ready to welcome an estimated 1.6 million passengers from Friday, June 26, through Monday, July 6. 

Of that number, approximately 570,000 local passengers will begin or end their journeys in Charlotte, representing about 35.4 percent of total passenger volume.

“That’s an important indicator of how Charlotte has grown to become the 14th largest city in America, along with the Airport,” said CLT Chief Operations Officer Jeff Perry. “In 2015, only 26% of passengers were beginning their trips here. That’s precisely why we built the Terminal Lobby Expansion: to accommodate today’s demand and prepare for tomorrow’s growth.”

Over 7,600 flights will depart from CLT during the 11-day holiday period.

__TSA & CMPD Reminders__

Between 40,000-44,000 passengers will pass through CLT’s three security checkpoints daily. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects its busiest days to be July 2-3 and July 5-6. 

To help ensure smooth travels, eight new self-service [e-Gates](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/e-gates-equal-faster-security-screening/ "e-Gates") will be available to TSA PreCheck® passengers at Checkpoint 2.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department will have increased staffing at the terminal and at the Airport's main entrance. 

Passengers are advised to start with an empty bag, and double-check their luggage to ensure they are not carrying any prohibited items that could delay travel or prevent them from flying.

“If you are traveling with a firearm, please review your airline’s firearm travel policy,” said CMPD Captain Matthew Horner. “Your firearm must be packed, unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case in your checked baggage. Never, I repeat, never pack your firearm in your carry-on bag. New signage at TSA and TSA officers will also remind you of this restriction.”

__New Self-Park Option__

Beginning July 1, Express Deck Preferred will transition from valet service to a traditional self-parking deck. 

The name will remain the same, and reservations will still be made through online booking, and customers will have access to the shuttle service to and from the terminal. 

Valet service will continue to be available on Level 1 of the Hourly Deck. The [Valet parking](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/valet-parking-elevates-premium-services/ "Valet parking at CLT") space at CLT now features refined aesthetics and an enhanced experience.

__Loyal Airport Parking Customers Enjoy Rewards__

The Royal court of loyal Airport parking customers is quickly growing!

The [Royalty Program](https://www.cltairport.com/royalty-information/ "CLT Royalty Program") launched in September 2024, and by February 2025, more than 210,000 accounts had been created. 

Currently, the Royalty Program boasts 691,633 accounts.

Through the Royalty Program, loyal Airport parking customers can enjoy Royal perks and earn reward points when booking online via [parkCLT.com](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/ "parkCLT.com") or the CLT Airport App.

It features four tiers – blue, bronze, silver, and gold – and lets drivers earn points toward rewards when parking at any of CLT’s parking products. You’ll earn one point for every dollar you spend.

Each tier offers additional benefits – ranging from discounts and promotions to free upgrades, such as parking closer to the terminal.

Drivers start earning points once they create an account, register their vehicle, book online and park. Points are pending on a purchase until the exit time of their booking. After that, they are added to their Royalty Program account for future rewards.

CLT Rings In the Fourth 


When the Bielik family arrived at CLT from Austin, Texas, for a seven-hour layover en route to Paris, France, they stopped to eat in the Plaza Food Court—and that’s when their morning plans changed.

They suddenly found themselves at a hands-only CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Awareness event in the terminal Atrium – the first time this type of Community Outreach event was offered to both the traveling public and employees sitewide.

“Our five kids (ages 6-20) needed to get some activity out of their system, and one of the Airport workers came by and promoted it, and I thought, ‘It’s time for you kids to go learn how to save some lives,'” said Dennis Bielik. “Because you never know what’s going to happen in life, so it’s always good to be prepared and not be afraid of stepping in when it matters.”

Passengers Crystal Edwards and Andrew Melton stopped by on their way back to Albany, N.Y., after a weekend graduation in Charlotte.

“We still have three hours until our flight, and I saw the signs promoting it, and I’ve never learned how to do CPR before,” admitted Edwards. 

“I took CPR training years ago, and I like to stay on top of this stuff, so it is just a good skill to know,” added Melton. “This was very educational, and the people here are awesome.”

__Important Community Outreach__

The CLT Risk, Safety & Health team partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) and Medic to host the free training session. Approximately 109 employees and 63 passengers attended. 

The emphasis was on the “Chain of Survival” and on familiarizing people with life-saving techniques, so they aren’t afraid to use them if needed. From calling 911 during a cardiac event to starting CPR compressions and using an AED, participants received a quick 90-second demonstration.

The Bee Gees' classic song “Staying Alive” was played on a loop to remind participants of the correct “beat” to maintain during CPR – 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

“Unfortunately, these types of events happen every day at the Airport,” said CLT Customer Engagement Manager Lauri Golden. “And the best thing that we can do is bring more awareness and a comfort level so that people know how to take action if and when this type of event happens around them.”

CLT has one of the highest save rates among Airports and has increased the number of AED units on campus to 196, including the terminal and parking areas. They are strategically located in accordance with the AHA recommendation that rescuers be able to reach an AED within a 3-5-minute round-trip walk to and from the emergency site.

“Of course, we have first responders in our building, and this is their critical role and function at the Airport, “added Golden. “But anyone can be a lifesaver; we can all step in.”

90 Seconds To Save a Life

A huge concrete lab on wheels has rolled into CLT for the next two weeks. 

The Federal Highway Administration has its Mobile Concrete Technology Center (MCTC) on-site at CLT to provide testing support for ongoing paving work on the runway and taxiways for the new Fourth Parallel Runway, scheduled to open in fall 2027.

The UNC Charlotte Aviation, Innovation & Research (AIR) Institute secured the research project, which is being funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The mobile lab features new concrete testing methods and other Performance Engineered Mixture technologies that deal with design and performance.

“We’re taking a more critical look at our concrete, and we’re designing and constructing it for more durable infrastructure in the future,” said Robert Conway with the Federal Highway Administration. “We expect our airfield runways to perform at a much higher standard.”

Four daily production strips of concrete pavement on Taxiways H and T, along the North End Around Taxiway Extension, will serve as test sections for the research.

“This study is to explore different speeds, different vibration rates, different energies that we are imparting to the concrete,” said Dr. Tara Cavalline, Professor and Director of the Charlotte AIR Institute. 

This research project is separate from the [Digital Twin](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/digital-twin-paves-the-way-for-smarter-runway/ "Digital Twin Project") sensors that will be embedded in the new runway later this summer.

CLT Welcomes Mobile Concrete Lab for Research

Many summer travelers departing from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will notice new self-service technology that should speed up the security process for those with TSA PreCheck® or TSA PreCheck® Touchless ID.

CLT and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are testing eight e-Gates at Checkpoint 2 that use facial matching technology to enhance security, improve checkpoint efficiency and enhance the passenger experience. 

__How it Works__

Passengers enrolled in [TSA PreCheck®](https://www.tsa.gov/precheck "TSA PreCheck") will insert their driver's license or other state-issued REAL ID into the designated slot at the e-Gate, or place their passport or smartphone ID on the reader. A camera will then take their photo, match it to the document presented, and—after verifying a few other travel details, such as boarding and screening status—the gate will open.

Travelers who have opted into TSA PreCheck® Touchless ID through their frequent flier profile with participating airlines will have their photo taken and then pass through without presenting physical documents because their passport information is already on record.

The e-Gate operational assessment at CLT began in early May and will continue collecting data through July.

“CLT has invested in our security checkpoints, allowing us to test and try new things like e-Gates,” said CLT Federal Security Director Greg Hawko. “We hope it’s here forever because our team loves it, the passengers love it, and it gives us an opportunity to make the process more streamlined.”

__Summer Travel Screenings Jump__

On a typical day, Hawko says an average of 35,000 passengers pass through all three of CLT’s security checkpoints. In summer, that number is closer to 40,000 and can be as high as 44,000 daily.

While the e-Gates at Checkpoint 2 will shave about three seconds off the screening process for each passenger, they will also allow TSA officers previously stationed at the ID check to be redeployed to other high-need areas, such as physical bag checks, screening stations or responding to security alarms and incidents.

e-Gates = Checkpoint Efficiency

The City of Charlotte has broken ground on a third fire station at CLT, with an official ceremony held on May 27.

The new Station 47 will be in the 3800 block of Yorkmont Road, at the southern portion of the airfield, and will join existing Stations 41 and 17 at the Airport.

Approximately 80-100 Charlotte Fire Department personnel are assigned specifically to CLT.

The five-bay facility will house Engine 47, Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) trucks, 
administrative offices, 22 sleeping rooms, training rooms, a kitchen, a fitness area and more. 

“At CLT, our mission is rooted in people, partnerships and productivity – and Firehouse 47 is a powerful example of that mission in action,” said CLT Chief Executive Officer Haley Gentry. “It represents our shared commitment to safety, operational resiliency, and serving the millions of passengers and employees who rely on this Airport every day.”

__Enhanced Safety, Response Times__

The nearly 54,000-square-foot facility is being built to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements in preparation for the new Fourth Parallel Runway, which is under construction and scheduled to open in fall 2027. 

The Charlotte Fire Department will use Station 47 for both aircraft and structural fire rescue. Its strategic location (closest to what will become the two easternmost runways) will optimize response times and enhance safety on the growing airfield and terminal by eliminating the need for responders to cross active runways.

The FAA specifies a response time of three minutes or less for the first piece of equipment and under four minutes for the second.

“It comes down to safety,” said CLT Airport Division Chief Justin Field. “If there’s an emergency at the terminal, these folks have direct access.”

“When emergencies happen at an Airport, seconds matter, access matters, coordination matters,” added CFD Fire Chief Reginald T. Johnson. “This is a major step forward for firefighter safety and Airport operations. The firefighters who serve here will train every day for highly complex incidents that require skill, teamwork and precision under pressure.”

__RAMP 17 In Action__

A new firefighting apparatus developed entirely in-house at CLT is already being put to the test. 

The [RAMP 17 ](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/clt-develops-new-firefighting-tool/ "RAMP 17 Vehicle")truck is an innovative tool for tackling parking-deck, electric-vehicle and restricted-area fires. It was recently used to extinguish a tug fire in the baggage-processing area under the terminal.

This F-350 can be operated by a single firefighter and has been custom retrofitted with a 60-gallon compressed-air foam system, eight car-fire blankets (each weighing 65 pounds), hose couplings and fittings, fire extinguishers, a specialized EV undercarriage nozzle and an EV-safe plug.

Third Fire Station to Expand CLT Safety 

Slather on that sunscreen - the busy summer travel season is underway and CLT is ready to get you on your journey!

An estimated 6.7 million passengers are forecasted to fly in and out of CLT from June through August. July is expected to be the busiest month of the summer, with a forecast of 2.3 million passenger enplanements.

If you haven’t booked your flight yet, CLT has several new options:

__JetBlue Returning to CLT__

JetBlue is returning to CLT. The low-cost carrier will offer three daily nonstop flights from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL) starting July 9.

According to the company, JetBlue expects to operate nearly 130 daily departures from Fort Lauderdale this summer, marking the largest operation in the airline’s history from that airport - over 75% more daily flights than in 2025.

Earlier this month, JetBlue stepped up to assist Spirit Airlines customers and employees affected by Spirit’s shutdown by offering $99 rescue fares to stranded passengers and jump seats to crew members trying to get home.

__New Daily Service to Abu Dhabi__

Etihad Airways has announced it will soon offer daily service from CLT to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), June 15- Sept. 8, increasing from four weekly flights.

This follows the successful launch of the new route on March 20. It is CLT’s longest to date and the first to the Middle East, offering one-stop access to more than 40 destinations across the Indian Subcontinent, Africa and Asia.

Etihad is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates.

__American Resumes Nonstop Service to Athens__

If you are looking to visit ancient ruins or eat Greek cuisine, here’s your chance to do both.
American Airlines has resumed its nonstop summer service to Athens, Greece (ATH) through October 23, 2026.

The 10-hour nonstop flight from CLT to Athens started last June.

__New PA route__

Beginning October 5, American Airlines will begin twice-daily service to State College, Pennsylvania –  home of Penn State University. 

State College is the largest borough in Pennsylvania and is also known as “Happy Valley” for its natural beauty and economic resilience during the Great Depression.

__New Restaurant__

Before catching your flight, grab a bite to eat at the Airport's newest restaurant. 

“Grounded In CLT” officially lands in the Atrium on June 25. It’s a cozy space designed to make travelers feel at home and enjoy their time in the Airport.

The restaurant is a handmade-burger concept that offers travelers a variety of burgers, handhelds, appetizers, salads, sides, and a full lineup of craft beer, wine and cocktails. They also offer vegetarian and kids' options.

Fun in the Sun: Summer Travel Begins

CLT’s most recent Noise Advisory Forum brought together interested community members who wanted to learn more about the Airport and to participate in ongoing discussions about noise-related topics. 

April’s meeting focused on CLT’s standard terminal arrivals (STARS) and standard departures (SIDS), and on how these structured routes improve safety and predictability. 

The next meeting and ongoing education series on __July 8__ __from 6-8 p.m. at the CLT Center__ (5601 Wilkinson Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28208), will focus on Airport efforts to effect flight path changes under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). CLT Planning & Development will deliver a NEPA and Master Plan Briefing.

Noise Advisory Forum Meets 


CLT’s airfield transformation reached a new milestone this month, as the first of the Airport’s three parallel runways was repainted and redesignated.

The Airport’s westernmost runway officially became 01L-19R. (It was previously known as 36L-18R.) 

__Repaint Done Overnight__

The runway was closed from 9 p.m. on May 13 to 9 a.m. on May 14 so crews could blast out and remove the old numbers, then repaint the large 60-by-20-foot digits. Watch the overnight video below.<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t11IQriJG8>

“Redesignating Runway 01L-19R was a true milestone for our team,” said CLT Director of Engineering Ashton Watson. “Our crews, contractors and operations staff worked seamlessly throughout the night to remove the old markings and install the new ones with precision.”

CLT is slowly repainting pavement markings and replacing runway signage to make way for the new Fourth Parallel Runway, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in fall 2027.

Since CLT has multiple north-south parallel runways—and only three can be designated left, center, and right—the Airport is renumbering all of them. The changes are being made for system-wide consistency, safety and compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and regulations. 

“This isn’t just repainting numbers — it’s a safety critical operation that demands coordination and zero room for error,” added Watson. “The work positions us for the next phase of CLT’s airfield transformation and ensures a smooth, safe transition as we prepare for the new Fourth Parallel Runway.”

The next runway redesignations will take place on July 9 and September 3:

- July 9 (36C-18C becomes 01R-19L)
- Sept. 3 (36R-18L becomes 36-18)
- Fall 2027 (New 01C-19C opens)

This staggered timeline allows air traffic controllers and pilots enough time to adapt to the changes and for aviation charts to be updated and synchronized – a process that happens every 56 days. 

__Digital Twin Taking Shape__

The new Fourth Parallel Runway will be equipped with 2,000 sensors, creating a ["Digital Twin"](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/digital-twin-paves-the-way-for-smarter-runway/ "Digital Twin Paves Way for Smarter Runway") and a fully instrumented runway.

The sensors will measure things like moisture, stress and friction, providing the Airport with real-time pavement data to better inform operational and safety decisions. The research will be shared with the FAA to enhance future airfield pavement design.

The $6.5 million-dollar Digital Twin project is a partnership between CLT and the UNC Charlotte Aviation and Innovation Research (AIR) Institute.

Overnight Transformation: Runway Renumbering Underway


It was a great day at the links for the seventh annual Airport Community Partnerships (ACP) CLT Golf Tournament, with lots of big swings to benefit charity.

This year’s fun-filled tournament took place on May 11, 2026, at the Tega Cay Golf Club in Tega Cay, SC and featured an additional 9-hole offering. 

The 212 registered golfers helped raise $174,834 for Lift Up Carolinas, an organization dedicated to feeding, clothing, mentoring, and educating children and families throughout the greater Charlotte community. 

ACP's charity golf event was created to help Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and its business partners give back to their neighbors on the west side of Charlotte. Since 2019, nearly $800,000 has been raised for nonprofit organizations serving people living near the Airport. 

__Lift Up Carolinas Impact__

Lift Up Carolinas was founded in 1992. The group has 200 dedicated volunteers and only three paid employees. A thrift shop is the primary funding source.

Some of its signature programs include GEAR UP, which provides school uniforms, supplies, and essentials to more than 50 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) locations; Mecklenburg County Teen Court; and Check Hunger, which operates mobile food pantries to assist families facing food insecurity.

Lift Up Carolinas impact is wide-reaching:

- 135 impact sites in the Charlotte area, including 18 locations near CLT
- Over 33,000 Children & Families Served (2024-25)
- Over 13,000 Children & Adults Fed (2024-25)

“We would like to work ourselves out of a job and not have to provide these resources, but with everything that is happening, we are able to come in and fill a gap,” said Lift Up Carolinas Executive Director Jessica Trosch. “We are so excited to be the beneficiary this year because the support is going to allow us to continue to expand and grow our impact, specifically in the West Charlotte community.”

__ACP, Sponsors Give Back__

“It’s a tremendous organization, and I don’t know if they have the name recognition of past beneficiaries,” added CLT Community Engagement Coordinator Sterling Patterson. “With their logo on the course, their website, and in media coverage, I think this will help our hundreds of airport community partners understand what they do.”

This year’s presenting sponsors were HMS Host by Avolta (CLT’s official food and beverage concessionaire) and Paradies Lagardère (the Airport’s official retail concessionaire).

A total of 63 companies participated including: Aviation Consulting, Vanderlande Industries, Mt. Olive Pickle Company, RS&H, American Airlines, CLT and others who sponsored various contests, tee boxes and tables.

Golf Event Swings Big for Charity

When Jonathan Tucker learned about the Wings For All program at CLT, he immediately knew he had to be there with his 57-year-old aunt, June Tucker, of Monroe, N.C.

Prior to this event, June had never been on an airplane or even in an airport. This was their first time participating in Wings for All, which was held on Saturday, May 2.

“I did not want her first experience to be overwhelming or uncertain,” he said. “I wanted it to be intentional, supported and something that builds confidence—for both of us.”

CLT partners with Delta Air Lines and The Arc of North Carolina to bring the national program to Charlotte. It serves as a “dress rehearsal” for a real flight for individuals with autism or other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Jonathan, who works in airline HR and is pursuing his pilot certification, wants to share his passion for aviation and travel with his Aunt June and has taken an active role in her life and care.

“She is vibrant, funny and loves being out in the world—coffee, shopping, movies and just being around people,” he added. “At the same time, she uses a wheelchair and has limited mobility, which has made something as simple as travel feel out of reach for most of her life.”

__A Practice Day of Travel__

June was one of 47 participants, accompanied by family members, including her sister Joy, who checked in, received boarding passes, cleared security, and then proceeded to Gate A-35 for lunch. They even mingled with the flight crew before they boarded the aircraft and taxied around before returning.

Wings for All offers an opportunity to acclimate to the sights and sounds of a bustling, often crowded airport, which can be overwhelming for someone with sensory issues. CLT's Canine Crew therapy dogs were also on hand for extra support.

CLT has hosted the program since 2017, and it continues to grow in popularity as families of individuals with disabilities and autism seek new experiences and ways to make travel and vacations possible.

Some families attend for several years before their loved ones feel ready for the real thing.

“My goal is to travel with her regularly, and we love the beach,” said Jonathan. “But beyond that, I want to take her and my mom to Paris. Neither of them has ever been overseas, and being able to give them that experience, especially June, would mean everything to me.”

__“It’s Cool To Fly American” to CLT__

On Saturday, April 11, American Airlines hosted 43 families and nearly 130 participants at CLT for the “It’s Cool to Fly American” program. 

It’s another valuable program that gives children with autism or other special needs the opportunity to experience the Airport and everything associated with it – including check-in, security, waiting at the gate, and taxiing on the tarmac, as they would on a real flight. 

The young travelers came to Gate C-13 with backpacks, headphones and stuffed animals, where they were met by American Airlines flight crews, members of the AA leadership team in Charlotte and other volunteers.

Once on board, there were plenty of smiles, selfies and high fives.

According to the airline, since 2014, “It’s Cool to Fly American” has hosted more than 8,500 participants from approximately 4,500 families in more than 62 locations.

 “Wings For All" returns to CLT


When CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway opens in fall 2027, it will not only enable more flights in and out of Charlotte but also serve as an innovative “living-learning laboratory"—and the only modern, active, instrumented runway in the U.S. Think of it as a “smart runway.”

Beginning in August, approximately 2,000 sensors will be embedded and integrated at various levels, both above and below the surface, primarily at the northern end of the new Runway 1C-19C, to collect data that will help the Airport make real-time maintenance, operational and safety decisions.

__Creating a “Smart Runway”__

The project will support the development of a “Digital Twin,” creating a virtual replica of conditions along the new 10,000-foot-by-150-foot runway, enabling predictive pavement management for this critical infrastructure. 

The new Fourth Parallel will be 18 inches deep, with 129,000 tons of asphalt and 672,000 square yards of concrete pavement (almost twice the size of the infield at Lowe’s Motor Speedway). 

“We had to do a risk assessment to say, ‘Do we feel comfortable enough in the technology?’” said CLT Director of Engineering Ashton Watson. “And the good news is these sensors have been used on highway bridges and interstates all around the country. They have done instrumentation and embedded these sensors and had good results with no long-term maintenance issues.”

The sensors—most about the size of a cell phone—will continuously collect data and track movements as aircraft taxi, take off and land. The devices will identify conditions such as pavement stress and strain, moisture, settlement, friction and even snow and ice to assist in decision-making for activities like deicing. 

“The environment of a runway deals with a lot of extremes, with temperatures around zero at some points of the year and then heavy amounts of moisture,” added Watson. “These (sensors) will provide some predictive information for real-time decisions on whether to deploy chemicals or equipment to treat the runway.”

Topside cameras will also provide a video feed to Airport operations and enhance pavement analytics, such as verifying aircraft types and weights. (Typical aircraft taxiing at CLT can weigh between 100,000 pounds and up to approximately 700,000 pounds for a Boeing 777.)

“A runway is valuable to us, and to the air carriers, so you want an asset that is going to stand the test of time,” said Watson. “The carriers want reliable, safe and heavily maintained pavement to operate their airplanes on, and this will help CLT make informed maintenance decisions about how the concrete is performing.”

Watson says it’s no different than preventive maintenance in a home. “If you can stay ahead of it, it is going to save you a lot of money in the long run.” 

__Cost & Research__

The approximately $6.5 million Digital Twin project is a collaboration between CLT and the UNC Charlotte Aviation Innovation & Research (AIR) Institute – a partnership between CLT, UNC Charlotte’s William States Lee College of Engineering and the Sullenberger Aviation Museum. 

The project is funded with a combination of grants, committed support and in-kind contributions. 

CLT leaders and the University brought the idea to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and its Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program (ACPTP), which awarded a $2 million grant because the project aligns with the program's research needs to advance understanding of pavement performance.

Dr. Tara Cavalline, Professor and Director of the Charlotte AIR Institute, is leading the research.

“Students will be helping us throughout the project,” said Dr. Cavalline. “We expect them to be engaged with our contractors, learning the ins and outs of putting in this type of instrumentation, and what it takes to get the communication and power tied in. They will then work with our faculty to analyze the data obtained from the real-time dashboard and the data archived for research use.”

__A Decade of Data__

The runway sensors are designed to collect data for about a decade before their anticipated lifespans end. The results could eventually transform standards for aviation pavement construction and maintenance, as well as other FAA and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) infrastructure projects.

“These pavements are designed to get 30 to 40 years out of them, and there’s a lot of theoretical inputs that go into how thick the concrete is, how dense the concrete is, how much cement, how much stone, how much sand and how much water that goes into the mixing of the concrete,” said Watson. 

“So, when the next runway is built five years from now somewhere in the country, the FAA may say, ‘This is the new specification. We’ve updated it because of all this information from the data sensors at CLT.’ That’s the kind of industry-wide impact this effort can have.”
