A lush “Carolina Canopy” now wraps the walls of the International Arrivals area at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).

Installation began in March 2025 and was completed in April.

A Soothing Effect

The large-scale ceramic tile and glass mosaic, created by Houston-based artist Dixie Friend Gay, stands 8 feet 3 inches high and extends 80 feet. Gay researched the area’s native plants and birds and incorporated them into her vibrant design.

Travelers may recognize Redbuds and Dogwoods in spring bloom; however, Gay says her work has a very intentional effect.

“In science research, it’s proven that nature images lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate,” said Gay. “Carolina Canopy” is an immersive experience to create this visceral reaction. Visitors will be one with the birds in the canopy. It will create an altered state and smooth out the rough edges caused by travel and immigration.”

Gay is well-known for her public art commissions and has also created pieces for numerous other airports, including Dallas Love Field, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the Port of Miami. In 2003, she was recognized as Texas Artist of the Year, and Americans for the Arts recognized her public art in its “Public Art Year in Review”.

Artist Selection Process

Artists showcased at CLT undergo thorough vetting. Representatives from the Public Arts Council, the community, the Airport and airline partners evaluate applications, interview the artists, assess their portfolios and approve the artwork. The entire process, from artist selection to project completion, can take up to three years.

“Having art in the Airport aligns with the city’s identity and promotes cultural understanding,” said CLT Art Program Manager Dena Jones. “It makes art accessible to all.”

So, the next time you pass through the Airport, be sure to look around and immerse yourself in our ever-growing “gallery.”
