Etihad Airways is set to begin service from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) on May 4, 2026. As the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad plans to operate four weekly nonstop flights from CLT utilizing its flagship Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The airline said it identified Charlotte as a promising hub that would meet the demand for one-stop connections to the Middle East and beyond, particularly to India and Southeast Asia.

“We’re excited to be the first airline from our region to serve this market,” said Antonoaldo Neves, Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer.

“Charlotte is a destination that has a very fast-growing economy, which is linked to the growth that Abu Dhabi is having at the same time,” added Adria Rabassa, Etihad’s Director of Network and Scheduling. Rabassa also cited the upcoming Formula One Etihad Airways Grand Prix in December 2025 and the plans for a Disneyland Theme Park as attractions for U.S. tourists.

Local Cultural Impact, International Ties

The long-haul route also will enhance and support cultural ties within a growing demographic in Charlotte.

“This is exciting news for our Indian community,” said Lal Vishin, President of the Indian Association of Charlotte, who estimates that the current Indian American population exceeds 50,000. Vishin added that the new Etihad route could be a game changer for them.

“Travel to India is often essential for family reunions, cultural connections and business opportunities,” said Vishin. “The new nonstop service to Abu Dhabi could make it easier for them to stay connected with their roots and explore new business prospects.”

CLT Airport is currently the sixth busiest airport in the world for aircraft operations. In 2024, CLT welcomed a record 58.8 million passengers, with international passenger traffic increasing by 13%. CLT currently serves 43 international destinations. Etihad will become CLT’s fourth foreign flag carrier.

“Etihad’s arrival is a milestone for CLT as we continue expanding our global reach,” said Haley Gentry, CEO of Charlotte Douglas International Airport. “This new route opens the door to the Middle East and beyond, providing our passengers with greater access to international destinations and strengthening Charlotte’s role as a key gateway for global travel.”

Longest Route, Largest Aircraft

When service begins next year, the 15-hour flight to Abu Dhabi will be CLT’s longest route and the first scheduled service by a Boeing 787 in the Airport's history.

Passengers also benefit from U.S. Customs Pre-Clearance in Abu Dhabi, allowing them to arrive in Charlotte as domestic travelers, which speeds up entry and connection times.

Charlotte will become Etihad’s sixth market in the U.S. and the seventh in North America, joining Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Washington, New York and Toronto.
