Runway Redesignation Ahead
One by one, CLT’s three existing parallel runways are getting new paint and signage to slowly make way for a new addition to the airfield - the Fourth Parallel Runway.
The work starts next month on May 14, when CLT’s westernmost runway, 36L-18R, will officially become 1L-19R.
It’s a huge task since the numbers measure 60 feet tall by 20 feet wide, depending on the digits. In addition to pavement markings, dozens of signs need to be changed on the taxiways, connectors and runway.
Since CLT has multiple north-south parallel runways—and only three with the same orientation can be designated as left, center and right—the Airport is redesignating the runways in preparation for the new Fourth Parallel Runway (1C-19C) set to open in fall 2027.
Repainting days are scheduled for:
| Date | Runway Update |
|---|---|
| May 14 | 36L-18R becomes 1L-19R |
| July 9 | 36C-18C becomes 1R-19L |
| Sept. 3 | 36R-18L becomes 36-18 |
| Fall 2027 | New 1C-19C opens |
The changes are being implemented for system-wide consistency, safety and compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and regulations. The timeline also provides air traffic controllers and pilots enough time to adapt to the changes and for aviation charts to be updated and synchronized – a process that happens every 56 days.
Other Airfield Changes
For the first time, CLT’s current center runway (36C-18C) has a full parallel taxiway on both sides. With Taxiway Echo already running along the east, the newly completed Taxiway Victor extension completes the west side, creating a true dual-taxiway system.
This brings more flexibility to the airfield, smoother aircraft movement around the center runway and a more efficient operation overall, especially during busy periods.
