Name: James Whisnant
Employer: City of Charlotte/Aviation
What is your job title? Airfield Maintenance Technician III
How long have you worked at CLT? Nine years
What originally attracted you to working at CLT?
As a prior owner/operator of my own business, I wanted to use my skills in operating equipment in a new environment and wanted to grow with the Airport.
Describe your typical workday.
There are a variety of tasks I work on at the Airport. Every day is different. I can be building a gravel road one day, mowing grass the next day and responding to various service calls anytime when called upon.
What do you like most about working at CLT?
I enjoy working with coworkers and sharing my knowledge with them, so they can also advance while working at the Airport.
What daily attitude/saying/motto do you bring to your job?
Bring us a mountain and we will move it. We build anything from a road to a drainage ditch.
Do you have any fun memories or moments/stories from your time at CLT that you would like to share?
When I started nine years ago, there was limited heavy equipment that CLT owned. The Airport has grown, and Field Maintenance has grown with it by purchasing new equipment to make our jobs more productive.
What keeps you at CLT?
I still enjoy what I do, and I like getting up in the morning and coming to work.
What makes the City of Charlotte a special place to live/work?
I like the benefit package they offer.
What is the best advice you’ve gotten from someone since starting work at CLT?
Understanding the whole picture instead of assuming what I think I see.
If you could hop on a plane and fly anywhere, where would you fly and why?
I would like to fly to Germany, learn a different culture and see new scenery.
