Name: Ron Rater
Employer: Delta Air Lines
What is your job title? Aircraft Maintenance Technician
How long have you worked at CLT? Since 1990
What originally attracted you to working at CLT?
I knew as a kid growing up in western New York that I wanted to live in Charlotte. CLT was the perfect fit following college for aircraft maintenance.
Describe your typical workday.
We meet inbound flights and talk to the flight crew to see if they have any maintenance items that need to be addressed. We also do a walk around visual inspection of the aircraft, checking for any abnormalities, leaks, damage, etc.
What do you like most about working at CLT?
Definitely the people! We have a great relationship with the Airport operations people, other airlines and travelers.
What daily attitude/saying/motto do you bring to your job?
If we make customers happy and smile and provide them a safe, reliable airplane, it’s a good day!
Do you have any fun memories or moments/stories from your time at CLT that you would like to share?
In the mornings, we will go upstairs to the terminal. We find young children flying. A lot of times it’s their first flight. My coworker will be in the cockpit and I have the kids say “Wake up Airplane” into my radio. My partner then turns all of the exterior lights on. The kids think they are talking to the airplane. The entire gate area enjoys seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces. We also host American Red Cross blood drives in the terminal every two months. What a rewarding feeling to know we are making a difference in someone’s life.
What keeps you at CLT?
I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else. This has been home for so long.
What makes the City of Charlotte a special place to live/work?
I used to drive race cars and have always been a NASCAR fan. Living in Charlotte has given me the opportunity to work with several top teams. Charlotte is close to both mountains and beaches.
What is the best advice you’ve gotten from someone since starting work at CLT?
Be safe first and foremost. We all want to go home at the end of the day.
If you could hop on a plane and fly anywhere, where would you fly and why?
I want to go to a sunrise on the Atlantic Ocean and then fly across country to see the sunset on the Pacific.
