CLT is shaking up its beverage lineup with a new drink that’s not only a social media darling but also a popular, non-alcoholic premium option. Enter the Dirty Soda! 

In August, HMSHost by Avolta—the Airport’s official food and beverage concessionaire—selected Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen to launch the Dirty Soda concept, a customizable drink made with a soda base, creamer, flavor options and toppings. A specialized drink machine measures, blends and aerates the ingredients. 

“We actually have three different kinds of dirty sodas, two that are kind of fruity and the other that is coconut and vanilla,” said Paloma Schrauder, HMSHost zone leader. “You can also set the sweetness level – they can adjust it according to your preference.” 

Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen was strategically chosen because it is pre-security, on the lower level at Baggage Claim and offers exposure to multiple customer segments.  

“The concept is particularly appealing to younger passengers while also reaching the thousands of Airport employees who pass through the area each day, creating strong opportunities for awareness, trial and repeat business,” said Matt Wissman, HMSHost Executive Director of Operations. 

In addition to Dirty Soda, Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen also offers colorful craft refreshers, boba chillers and natural energy drinks. The beverages range in price from $4.39 to $7.99. Look for the Dirty Soda and refresher concept to expand to 1897 Market in the Atrium in the next few months. 

__Bison & Bourbon Pairing__

CLT’s trend setting also extends to other Airport restaurants, as our concessionaires consistently work to keep their menus fresh and relevant. 

A juicy Bison Burger paired with Maker’s Mark 46 Bourbon was a huge hit this summer at CLT. HMSHost by Avolta Chef de Cuisine Andrew Aiton came up with the idea of pairing Connoisseur Collection Spirits with one of his personal favorites – bison.

Chef Aiton is now looking ahead to the upcoming holiday season and a new pairing (possibly sushi and tequila) for another elevated guest experience. 

“We are really kind of dialing in to see what the traveler of the future is looking for and then having creative options for them available throughout many of the different platforms we offer,” added Aiton. 

__Oktoberfest Returns to OMB__ 

And if you’re a traveler looking for a taste of a German Biergarten right in the Airport, check out Oktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB), located on Concourse D.  

A special limited-time menu offering seasonal favorites will be available through October and includes an Oktoberfest Sausage Board, Traditional German Sauerbraten and a Kaiserschmarrn Funnel Cake.

Dirty Soda and Unique Pairings Keep CLT on Trend

Each year on September 11, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) holds a remembrance ceremony in CLT’s terminal lobby. 

This year’s special event was much larger than in previous years to mark the 25th anniversary and included an Honor Guard procession and bagpiper, brief remarks from TSA and CLT leaders, and a moment of silence for the nearly 3,000 victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

“As an airport, we remember the profound impact that September 11th had on our aviation community, our airline partners, our employees, our passengers and the millions of people whose lives were forever changed,” said Haley Gentry, CLT Chief Executive Officer. “Here in Charlotte, home to American Airlines' second-largest hub, we remember and extend our deepest sympathies to airline team members, passengers, and crews whose lives were forever changed that day.”

CLT Acting Federal Security Director Jose Bonilla issued a recommitment to the TSA mission: 

“Forged on an anvil of cruel necessity and bloodshed in the assembly, TSA was built urgently in a time of war to preserve peace,” said Bonilla. “From all walks of life, we came forward to serve at an agency built on innovation, patriotism, and steady virtue. We are firm in our resolve not to yield to terror.”

The ceremony took place in front of a historic artifact housed in the terminal’s east ticketing lobby, near Checkpoint 3.

Remembrance Ceremony 

When the terrorist attacks occurred on September 11, 2001, CLT was the 21st busiest airport in the world and the busiest hub for US Airways. 

By comparison, it is now the world's seventh-busiest airport for aircraft operations and the second-largest hub for American Airlines. (US Airways merged with American Airlines in 2013.)

__Travel Drops Off__

In the weeks immediately after 9/11, air travel dropped off dramatically. Many people feared flying or travel in general, and airlines began reducing their schedules.

CLT temporarily lost several routes, including those to Montreal, Paris, and Frankfurt, Germany. According to news reports published in The Charlotte Observer from late September 2001, US Airways reduced its capacity by 23%, resulting in layoffs of about 1,700 employees in Charlotte.

In October 2001, the first full month after 9/11, CLT’s total passenger traffic fell 19% from the same time period the previous year. It took two years for passenger traffic and aircraft operations at CLT to return to October 2000 levels.

__U.S. Airways Hit Hard__

“The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks came just two months after the US Airways/United deal (proposed merger) fell through. The attacks exacerbated the problems of an already weak airline economy, bringing a sudden sharp decline in traffic that led to huge numbers of losses and layoffs,” wrote Reed.

“The domestic industry’s revenues fell to $107 billion in 2002, down from $130 billion in 2000, while domestic airline employment fell to 450,000, down from 520,000 in 2000. US Airways was particularly hard hit because 80% of its departures were on the East Coast, where travel fell precipitously, and because Washington’s Reagan National Airport, where US Airways was the dominant carrier, was closed for three weeks.”

__Creation of the TSA__

One of the biggest changes after 9/11 was the creation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the first new federal agency in decades. Before that, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directed airlines to provide screening or contract for security screening.

According to the official TSA website timeline, President George W. Bush signed the Aviation and Transportation Act in November 2001.

It required federal officials to conduct screening, required 100% of checked baggage to be screened, expanded the Federal Air Marshal Service and ordered reinforced cockpit doors.

In 2002, CLT had five security checkpoints and several baggage screening locations. Today, the Airport has three larger checkpoints with 21 total lanes and two in-line baggage screening locations, staffed by about 600 local TSA employees (Fifteen TSA hires from the original 2002 class remain at CLT today!)

“Through 25 years of continued evolution, passengers in the nation’s transportation system are safer and more secure than ever before,” said CLT Acting Federal Security Director Jose Bonilla. 

“The Transportation Security Administration works diligently to remain steps ahead of the persistent and evolving threat, while also working to significantly improve the overall passenger experience. We fully recognize that security and efficiency are opposite sides of the same coin, and I think the trend and progress will continue through the next 25 years.”

__Other Security Measures Added__

CLT and the FAA implemented several other security changes in the days, months, and years that followed the 9/11 attacks, including but not limited to:

- Only ticketed passengers, airline-badged personnel, and airport-badged personnel are allowed through security checkpoints.

- Curbside check-in service was discontinued (although SkyCaps were available for baggage assistance).

- Vehicles parked in CLT decks were subject to inspection. Vehicles that could not be visually inspected were asked to park in surface lots.

- Knives and box cutters are banned from carry-on luggage.

In August 2006, TSA put additional precautions in place. The agency began requiring passengers to remove shoes to screen for explosives, and banned liquids, gels and aerosols from carry-on luggage (later amended to allow for 3.4 ounces or less).

__Goodbye to Goodbyes__

With advanced technologies like facial comparison and other enhanced screening capabilities, some of these policies have since been adjusted or eliminated (for example, the “Shoes Off” policy ended in July 2025).

However, the days of greeting friends and family at the gate, waving goodbye to loved ones as they board, or coming into the terminal just to eat, shop, or hang out are gone. They have been replaced by a “new” normal that still exists today.

The Following Weeks, Months and Years


Twenty-five years ago, on a crisp, sunny Tuesday in September 2001, the world changed forever. What began as a normal morning for operations at CLT quickly turned into days of uncertainty and chaos in Charlotte and around the world.  

Immediately after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shut down U.S. airspace and grounded all flights, leaving the Carolina blue skies eerily empty for three days and CLT’s ramp and terminal crowded with planes and stranded passengers.

__Aviation Employees Respond__ 

“This was 2001, so we were getting faxes from the FAA about our current status and ‘here is what we are expecting you to do,’” recalls CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine, who was then the Airport Planner. 

Former CLT Airport Director Jerry Orr instructed Christine to go to the former U.S. Airways ramp control tower to help facilitate gate space for planes currently waiting to land and to find alternative parking for planes already at the gates. 

“I was telling the ramp manager, ‘Okay, park this one here, park that one there,’ and we were literally parking them catty-corner on the taxiway,” said Christine. “We had planes everywhere.” The airport had only 69 gates in 2001, yet on 9/11 it had about twenty diversions and nearly twice as many aircraft to park, with about 125 planes eventually grounded here.![us rear 2](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/5fZ1cFX2SQW2rnSUv7lHuw/81b59d2e793d78af1c4019ef5c4aeee8/us_rear_2.JPG) (*Photo: Charlotte Douglas International Airport, September 11, 2001*)

The FAA also wanted the terminal cleared; however, connecting passengers had nowhere to go. Rental cars were gone within an hour and baggage was piled up. Uber didn't exist in 2001, so if a taxi wasn’t available, strangers began offering rides. 

CLT Chief Maintenance Mechanic Charlie King was working that day and watched the events unfold on a TV mounted above a soda machine. “Our Airport looked like an aircraft parking lot,” said King. “I remember the silence at the Airport and how eerie it was to hear nothing but silence during the day.” 

David Neal was an Airport Operations Officer at the time, escorting a fuel truck on the airfield. “We had to bus passengers and flight crews from the aircraft that had parked on the hardstand and the former Runway 5/23 to the main terminal,” he said. “Without planes taking off, you could hear birds chirping.” 

David Roberts was a new IT employee, on his way to fix a receptionist’s computer in the terminal when he learned what happened. “There was uncertainty, confusion and fear, but there was also a strong sense of teamwork and responsibility. Everyone understood that we were part of something much bigger than our individual jobs…everyone came together.” 

CLT Concessions Manager Jennifer Long was interning with the Airport’s Public Affairs division under the current CLT Chief Executive Officer, Haley Gentry, who was Public Affairs Manager in 2001. Added Gentry, “I remember sending employees to the grocery store to buy diapers and baby formula. “We were in full response mode for several days. “During that night, I honestly couldn’t concentrate on my work duties,” recalled Inventory & Warehouse Specialist John Morris, who was a building maintenance supervisor in charge of floor care in 2001. “I was scared, worried about the future state of the world, the economy and even my work status.” 

__Flights Resume__

On Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, very limited domestic flights resumed as stranded aircraft were repositioned. By Friday, Sept. 14, major carriers started ramping up partial schedules.

“It is unclear what the coming months will bring. Some of you will be asked to do different things than those for which you were hired,” wrote Orr. “I have said it many times – ‘An organization is only as good as its people.’ We will make it through this difficult time because of our people and their ability to remain focused on this mission. I appreciate your hard work, cooperation and dedication.”

CLT Remembers 9/11 

CLT’s popular USO (United Service Organizations) Center celebrated its 20th anniversary of serving our nation’s service members and their families passing through the Airport. 

Well over one million visitors—an average of 500 a day—have walked through the doors of the USO Charlotte Center since it opened in the terminal, making it the busiest airport center in the world.

Today, active-duty, reserve, or retired military members and their families can stop by to relax, grab a snack, watch TV or even game. 

“It’s been fun to watch it grow,” said Megan Nisius, USO Area Operations Manager. “And looking back at how many people we have served and the good things that we’ve done, it’s been interesting...I love hearing from guests that this is the best USO!” 

__Two Decade Celebration__

The CLT USO Center commemorated its two decades in the upper level of the Atrium on September 1, 2026 with a cake and a small celebration for its partners, volunteers and guests, including Mike Skinner of Williamsburg, Va. This was Skinner’s first visit to the Charlotte Center. 

“I’m a veteran, and my son and daughter-in-law are veterans,” said Skinner. “There are about seven of us in the family, and we’ve all served and volunteered at the USO. It’s terrific. We’re very grateful it’s here.” 

Later this year, the CLT USO Center will relocate to the lower level of the terminal and hopes to expand beyond its current 3,000 square feet as it enters its next decade. 

In 2025, the CLT USO Center hosted 154,239 guests and served 17,981 others through programs and support outside the center. 

CLT’s USO Center is open 365 days a year, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is staffed by about 300 volunteers. USO Center Turns 20 

American Airlines CLT hub was recently awarded the Second Quarter 2026 Customer Cup, marking the CLT team’s first win since 2022.

The award recognizes American Airlines’ top-performing hubs and airports for excellence in safety, reliability, baggage handling and customer satisfaction. The accomplishment was celebrated earlier this month with a special event hosted by the American Airlines’ team featuring food, music and a fun photo booth as team members gathered at the gate on the tarmac to mark the big win. 

"Running an airline is the largest team sport, and I couldn't think of a better group to work with,” said American Airlines Aircraft Maintenance Technician Kevin Kramer. “Being able to work with all these people to restore serviceability to the aircraft and ensure that they are airworthy is really a privilege. I see how hard the maintenance team works and I know across the other departments they work hard too. To see the results in better performance and a performance that rises above the other stations is very satisfying."

The American Airlines team has 16,500 CLT-based members. From April to June, the hub served around 5.8 million customers on nearly 60,000 flights. The team also handled more than 4 million bags and have continued to significantly improve customer satisfaction ratings year over year.

In fact, eight out of 10 passengers reported being highly satisfied with their overall experience at CLT in the Airport’s latest passenger survey conducted April to June 2026. Nine out of 10 passengers also gave high marks to service at the security checkpoint, terminal facilities and getting to the terminal. 

Throughout the second quarter of this year, the CLT hub achieved overall record performances in delay handling, boarding satisfaction and overall bag experience. These successes are attributed to more than one factor. 

“Moving thousands of bags through an airport is a complex operation that depends on precision, coordination, and trust,” said CLT’s Facilities Director Scott Kincaid. “The strong partnership between American Airlines and CLT teams, combined with the scale and sophistication of our baggage-handling infrastructure, allows us to keep bags moving efficiently from check-in to aircraft. It’s a great example of how people, technology, and infrastructure work seamlessly together to deliver a quality travel experience for every passenger.”

American Airlines CLT Team Brings Home Customer Cup


Summer is winding down, and many students are back in school; however, the upcoming Labor Day holiday period will still bring a significant increase in passenger traffic at the Airport and in the skies.

Over 920,000 total passengers are projected to arrive and depart from CLT during the holiday period (Sept. 2-8). The share of local passengers at CLT continues to grow and now makes up approximately 36% of originating passengers. 

More than 4,400 flights are scheduled to depart over the seven-day period.
The busiest travel days are predicted to be Thursday, Sept. 3; Friday, Sept. 4; and Monday, Sept. 7.

__Don’t Wing It: Prepare to Fly__

Here are some tips to help you have a smooth trip:

__Book Parking When You Book Your Ticket__

- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has plenty of parking options—nearly 25,000 spots—but about 16,000 are online booking-only, and spots fill up quickly during peak times and holidays.

- Visit [parkclt.com ](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/ "parkclt.com")to guarantee your preferred parking option and secure the best rates. For convenience, download the CLT Airport app to book parking and check shuttle and security wait times. 

- Guests can also sign up for the [Royalty Program](https://www.cltairport.com/royalty-information/ "Royalty Program") to earn points and rewards. 

__Roadway Changes__

- New Express Deck Exit Lane Open: A new exit lane across from Express Deck Self Park is now open, providing a more direct route from the parking deck to Josh Birmingham Parkway, I-85 and I-485, eliminating the need to exit at Harlee Avenue.

- Road Section Renamed: CLT has renamed the section of Little Rock Road between Interstate 85 and Wilkinson Blvd. to N. Josh Birmingham Parkway. 

The change is part of the Airport's effort to create a more cohesive passenger experience by providing travelers with a single, consistently named roadway from the interstate exit to the Airport campus.

__Allow Extra Time__

- CLT suggests arriving at the terminal two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. During busy travel periods, you may need to allow extra time.

- Plan to reach the parking lot thirty minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal, as you might need to take a shuttle bus from your location.

- Consider alternate routes in case of traffic congestion. Use a navigation app to avoid trouble spots.

__New Concessions Arrive & Lounge Construction__

- __Grounded In CLT__ – This handmade burger concept opened in July with a variety of burgers and other menu items, such as sandwiches, appetizers, salads, sides, soft drinks and a full-service bar. Conveniently located in the A/B Connector, Grounded In CLT is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

- __Capital One Lounge__ – Travelers may notice construction has begun on the new Capital One Lounge located on the mezzanine level of Concourse A near Gates 21-29. Labor Day Holiday Closes Out Summer

If you are already planning travel for next summer, an exciting new destination is on the map for CLT travelers. 

American Airlines has announced nonstop summer service from Charlotte to Barcelona, Spain (BCN) beginning on May 27, 2027. The route—which previously operated at CLT until 2019—will offer one daily flight from Charlotte on a Boeing 777-200ER.  

“As Charlotte’s hometown airline, we’re thrilled to continue connecting Charlotte to the world, and Barcelona is an incredible addition to an already robust network at our second-largest hub,” said American Airlines Senior Vice President of CLT Operations Ralph Lopez Massas.  

“Whether you’re starting your journey in the Carolinas or connecting through CLT, this new route creates even more opportunities to experience one of Europe’s most vibrant cities and strengthen international tourism, business and cultural exchange in our backyard,” added Lopez Massas. “As we continue to grow and invest in the future of Charlotte, I’m grateful to our 16,500 team members whose dedication makes this growth possible.”  

American Airlines is also expanding its seasonal service to Paris, France (CDG), beginning on March 4 to meet Spring break travel popularity.

Charlotte travelers, and those who connect through CLT, will now have access to 11 daily flights to nine destinations in Europe next summer, including Barcelona (BCN); Dublin (DUB), Frankfurt (FRA), London (LHR), Madrid (MAD), Munich (MUC), Paris (CDG), Rome (FCO) and Athens (ATH), which launched in summer 2025.

Olé! Back to Barcelona

This year’s Runway 5K may have sold out in record time (approximately 15 minutes); however, one lucky winner secured a pair of race registrations after the window closed by entering the CLT Ticket Giveaway and being randomly selected.

Winner Olivia Selner and her husband have made the CLT Runway 5K an annual tradition. This will be their third year participating in the event.

“We've been running it together since before we were married, and it's a race that means a lot to us, especially because my family has strong ties to the airline industry,” said Selner. “Last year, my brother-in-law, who is a pilot for American Airlines, joined us, making the experience even more special. Being able to run on the runway, celebrate aviation, and create memories together is what keeps us coming back every year.”

Selner added that watching planes take off during the race and getting up close to the aircraft on display along the course make it a unique experience.

“And of course, it doesn’t hurt that it’s a nice, flat course!”

This year’s 19th annual CLT Runway 5K will take place on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 a.m. 

__Sweepstakes Winner Collects Runway Sign__ 

Susan Hawes from Charlotte was the winner of the Runway ReSIGNed Sweepstakes and picked up her prize at the CLT Center earlier this month, along with her boyfriend and flight instructor David Gill.

Hawes is a student pilot and a member of the Carolinas Aviators Network. 

“I want it to go in a special place, of course, so I am just trying to figure out where it is going to go,” said Hawes. “I’d love to have a hangar, but hopefully we will have a garage one day and that would be a perfect place. A little bit of Charlotte history for sure!”

The sign became available after the redesignation of the former Runway 18C-36C to Runway 1R-19L, a change made in preparation for the Airport’s future Fourth Parallel Runway. 

A total of 7,186 people entered the sweepstakes for a chance to win this unique piece of CLT history.

The Airport celebrated Aviation Week (August 19-25) by highlighting CLT's exciting offerings for passengers, aviation enthusiasts and the region, as well as recent expansion milestones and ongoing projects.

One of the most significant changes underway at our airfield is CLT's preparation for the new Fourth Parallel Runway, scheduled to open in fall 2027.

We thought it would be a good time to look back at the oldest operational runway (18L-36R), which marked the beginning of CLT’s airfield. It’s a full-circle moment, nearly 90 years later.

__A CLT Original Comes Full Circle__

- 1935-36: Runway construction underway.
- 1938: Runways 18-36 & 04-22 (later 05-23) commissioned.
- 1980: Left and Right were added to the 18L-36R designation after a second North-South parallel runway was built.
- 2026: Runway 18L-36R was redesignated, reverting to the original 18-36.

On Sept. 3, crews worked overnight to remove and repaint 63 surface-painted signs. They will also remove 108 sign panels, install 35 vertical taxiway sign structures and update signage at six vehicle service road sign locations.

__Historical Timeline__

The historical significance of Runway 18L-36R at Charlotte Douglas International Airport can’t be overstated.

It’s where Air Force One lands when it flies into CLT, because it can taxi to the nearby Air National Guard ramp. It also serves as the primary runway for general aviation and private aircraft.

Our easternmost runway is the oldest and busiest on the airfield. In 2025, Runway 18L-36R recorded 221,059 aircraft operations, accounting for 40% of CLT’s takeoffs and landings.

__According to the Sullenberger Aviation Museum archives:__

Built between 1935 and 1936, Runway 18-36 was one of three original runways (including former Runways 05-23 and 11-29) constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) at what was then Charlotte Municipal Airport. It measured 3,000 feet long by 150 feet wide.

“The story I was told was that the WPA started bringing the materials in on the railroad and literally pulled the stuff off, measured off what at the time was an acceptable distance and started grading and paving the runway,” said Jack Christine, CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer. “18-36 was the first one they started with because it was closest to the railroad, working from north to south.”

- In 1937, Eastern Air Lines began serving Charlotte Municipal Airport with two daily flights.

- By 1940, Runway 18-36 had been lengthened to 5,000 feet to accommodate Eastern Air Lines' fleet of ever-improving aircraft.

- From 1941 to 46 (during World War II), the U.S. Department of War invested $6 million in the Airport to create Morris Field, which served as a U.S. Army Air Corps base. A portion of that funding was used to convert the runways from clay landing strips to paved runways. They also lengthened and widened the runways for use by military aircraft.

- In 1964, Runway 18-36 was lengthened again from 5,117 feet to 7,787 feet to accommodate commercial jet aircraft and was narrowed back to 150 feet wide. (By then, iconic airlines, such as Eastern Air Lines, Piedmont Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines were serving Douglas Municipal Airport.)

- In 1978, the western taxiways were added.

- In 1994, the predominantly asphalt runway (by then renamed 18L-36R) got a 1,000-foot concrete extension at its southern end.

__Its current length is 8,676 feet (150 feet wide)__.

When the new Fourth Parallel opens, CLT’s original 18-36 runway will close for up to a year to undergo heavy maintenance because weather, operations and heavy aircraft have taken a toll on the asphalt, which is more challenging to maintain.

Back In Time: CLT’s Oldest Runway 

Spring and summer in the South offer amazing weather; however, these seasons can also bring thunderstorms and lightning that can impact Airport and airline operations.

Earlier this summer, the Airport’s Lightning Detection and Advisory Program (LDAP) began using revised detection and alerting parameters.

The goal is to reduce weather-related delays for passengers, enhance ramp safety and improve operational coordination.

__New Lightning Parameters__

After consulting other stakeholders and airports, CLT conducted a safety risk assessment and revised its LDAP parameters to better align with national industry best practices.

Using a data-driven approach, CLT has increased the lightning proximity radius by approximately 1.4 miles from the airfield perimeter (edge), rather than from the airfield's center point. This means the inner circle will encompass more of the Airport’s property. The revision also removes “In-cloud lightning” from that inner circle.

__Updated Detection Zones:__

- __Advisory__ – In-cloud and/or cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 25 miles (previously 20 miles) of CLT's perimeter. Serves as a pre-alert.

- __Warning__ (Amber) In-cloud and/or cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 10 miles of CLT’s perimeter will trigger an audible alert and an “amber” light. 

- __Alarm__ (Red) Cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 3 miles of CLT’s perimeter will activate alarm and put the ramp on “red.” *(__In-cloud lightning removed.__)*

- __All Clear__ (Green) No cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 3 miles for 10 minutes, or no total lightning detected within 10 miles for 10 minutes of CLT.

__Balancing Safety & Efficiency__ 

At Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), the Airport Operations Center (AOC) continuously monitors lightning activity and verifies automatic web relay alerts from Vaisala, a global lightning-detection sensor network used by NASA and other organizations.

CLT’s role is to advise on lightning threats, not to mandate stoppages. Individual airlines and stakeholders establish their own internal response policies.

The LDAP revisions were made to balance operational efficiency with the safety of Airport workers, airline employees and passengers.

“I’m sure everyone can understand the significant impact on the National Airspace System when an airport the size of Charlotte closes the ramp and is unable to accept or move traffic, whether that’s departing or arriving flights,” said Erick Hall, Airport Operations Center Manager. “So, we tried to reassess and balance that a little more.”

The process began after CLT’s largest carrier, American Airlines, provided data showing that 75-80% of ramp closures (2024-2025) were caused by in-cloud lightning (or pulses), not by cloud-to-ground lightning. 

“There were instances when the ramp was closed for a period of time, and there was no cloud-to-ground lightning strike detected during the entire storm; everything was up at altitude,” added Hall.

Extended ramp closures beyond 30 minutes can trigger a ripple effect of flight delays, crew time-outs, and long “on-boards,” leaving passengers stuck on planes, potentially violating Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines and causing irregular operations for the rest of the day.

Hall warns that no matter the ramp's color, the advisory program is just that – advisory, not preventive. However, he says the new lightning parameters should increase awareness without causing unnecessary delays.

__Overlook “Light Stack” Coming__

A light stack (red-amber-green), like those used on the Airport ramp, will eventually be installed at the Airport Overlook as part of a lighting upgrade project to improve safety and keep visitors informed about ramp conditions and lightning detection.

Updated Lightning Program Could Mean Fewer Delays

Race Day is Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 am. 

“Community members began reaching out about registration as early as December 2025,” said Sterling Patterson, CLT Community Engagement Coordinator. “We love how popular this event has become among area residents and beyond.”

Last year, the race sold out in under three hours. This year, it sold out in approximately 15 minutes, showing the growing popularity and size of the CLT Runway 5K. 

“We had such interest from our partners that we had to close our request for sponsors,” added Patterson. “In response, we are delighted to offer several new, exclusive packages, allowing even more organizations to join us at the Runway 5K.” 

In 2007, the event had only 500 participants. In 2025, ten of the 1,600 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers who crossed the finish line traveled more than 1,000 miles, including four from abroad. Next year, the event will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The October 18, 2025, race was a record-breaking event, raising $90,930. Since 2019, CLT has raised over $317,000 for Central Piedmont Opportunity Scholarships – more than doubling the original goal. 

The Runway 5K has been so successful that CLT announced an endowed scholarship at Central Piedmont earlier this year, the “Charlotte Douglas International Airport Scholarship Fund.” The endowed scholarship will support students pursuing aviation-related careers and ensure CLT’s charitable impact at Central Piedmont continues.

“The Runway 5K is one of our flagship events and demonstrates how we build connections between the Airport and our surrounding neighbors. It is always a favorite among our entire Community Engagement team," according to Patterson.

To date, 30 students from Mecklenburg County have received CLT Airport Opportunity Scholarships.

Sold Out: Runway 5K Sets New Record

July’s Noise Advisory Forum (NAF) brought together more than 30 community members interested in learning more about aircraft noise and long-term Airport planning and development. The July 8 meeting at the CLT Center was the third of four meetings this year.

Neighborhoods represented at the recent NAF included Berewick, Belmont, Southpark, Mountain Island Lake, Little Rock Crossing, Cooley Hills and the River District, as well as cities outside the Charlotte area, such as Fort Mill, S.C. and Lake Wylie, S.C.

The NAF was established last year to foster open and constructive dialogue between the City of Charlotte Aviation Department and impacted communities. 

Mooresville resident and former Airport Community Roundtable (ACR) Board Member Kevin Vesely said his ongoing concern is that arriving aircraft descend too quickly and remain at low altitudes longer than necessary before landing.

“When you watch the planes land on FlightAware.com, you can clearly see they’re coming in at 10,000 feet, and then 3,900 feet, and they continue for 20 or 30 miles,” said Vesely. “When they come down like this, they go across all our neighborhoods and make noise.”

__NEPA & Possible Flight Path Changes__

Attendees at the July meeting also learned more about the Airport’s Master Plan 2050 and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which outlines how flight path changes will be evaluated with the addition of CLT’s new Fourth Parallel Runway.

The new 10,000-foot runway (1C-19C) will be used primarily for departures and will enhance overall airfield operational efficiency.

“We want to first avoid environmental impacts,” said Michael Pilarski, CLT Airport Planning Program Manager. “If we can’t avoid them outright, we want to minimize those impacts, and if that is still difficult, we will mitigate to the best of our abilities. And as the NEPA process unfolds, public input is a major part, so we want to hear from you. Having community interest is critical and very important to us.”

Possible operational changes could include adopting divergent headings—which would spread post-takeoff flight paths over a wider area—and eliminating the current two-mile turning restriction, allowing departing aircraft to turn sooner.

Public meetings are expected later this year. Community members are encouraged to watch for future announcements with details on meeting dates, locations and opportunities to participate.

The Airport will consider those comments and make recommendations based on the environmental assessment of the new runway, which is underway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will then review those recommendations and make its own.

The Fourth Parallel Runway is scheduled to be commissioned in late September 2027.

__Improved Noise Complaint Form & Mobile Webform__

CLT has unveiled an improved [noise complaint form](https://www.planenoise.com/cltairportnoise/ "Noise Complaint Form") for those who need it. July NAF attendees also received the first preview of CLT’s new mobile webform – designed to make submitting and tracking noise concerns easier and more accessible.

CLT is one of the busiest airports in the world for aircraft operations, with more than 1,600 daily arrivals and departures to more than 190 destinations. The Airport plays a vital role in the Carolinas’ economy, generating an estimated $40 billion in economic impact and supporting 185,000 jobs annually.

Aircraft noise is a reality of any busy airport, and CLT recognizes that it can impact nearby communities, which is why CLT remains dedicated to transparent communication with the public.

Noise Forum Draws Strong Attendance

For the fourth consecutive year, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has been named North America’s most financially efficient airport among those serving more than 40 million passengers. 

The prestigious industry award, presented by the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), is based on 2024 financial year data. The ATRS is a global academic and industry organization that evaluates airports worldwide, focusing on several aspects of airport operations, including productivity and efficiency, cost competitiveness, financial performance and airport charges.

“This recognition is a validation of our effort to support growth and opportunity for the residents of the Charlotte region!” said Michael Hill, CLT Chief Financial Officer. “When we operate efficiently, we keep airline costs competitive, which helps sustain and grow air service. That connectivity is a major driver of business activity, tourism and job creation across the region. It also means we can reinvest in infrastructure, which enables growth and supports existing and new jobs for our citizens.”

__CLT’s Economic Impact__ 

CLT is owned and operated by the City of Charlotte. It has an annual economic impact of $40 billion in the Carolinas region, which is about 5% of the state of North Carolina's entire domestic product.

Infrastructure projects, such as the recently completed Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) and the Fourth Parallel Runway project (on schedule to open in fall 2027), are funded through a combination of federal grants, passenger facility charges and airport revenue bonds, with no local tax dollars.

CLT is currently the seventh-busiest airport in the world for aircraft operations (arrivals and departures) and the second-largest hub for American Airlines. In 2025, the Airport handled 53.6 million passengers, with almost 35% of those passengers originating in Charlotte.

Hill explained that airlines base decisions on the strength of the local market, cost, reliability and long-term financial predictability.

A ranking like this reinforces CLT’s financial model and can be a game changer for bringing new and exciting destinations, and even new carriers, into the market. 

“That matters because lower operating costs create value for the airlines and an environment which encourages growth and expansion, not only for our hubbing carrier (American Airlines) but for all airlines serving the Airport,” added Hill. 

“An efficient cost structure also reduces barriers to entry for new airlines to initiate service to CLT, as evidenced by the introduction of new service by Etihad with non-stop service to Abu Dhabi earlier this spring. Financial efficiency also lets the airlines know they’re partnering with an airport that manages growth responsibly, which reduces risk for long-term route planning.”

__Conveniently Connecting CLT to the World__

The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance cites regional connectivity as the city’s greatest asset.

“The level of air service at CLT is far beyond what can be supported by the local community alone,” said CLT’s Hill. “CLT’s financial efficiency is largely credited for the level of commercial aircraft operations and the number of destinations served with non-stop flights. This level of service is a key contributor to the region’s growth and provides tremendous convenience to our citizens who would otherwise need to connect through other airport facilities.”

Big changes are underway on the CLT airfield, and now is your chance to own a small part of its past.

As part of CLT Airport’s ongoing runway redesignation project, a retired airfield sign from former Runway 18C-36C is being offered to the public through a special sweepstakes, Runway ReSIGNed.

The sign was removed during the recent redesignation of Runway 18C-36C to Runway 1R-19L, a change made in preparation for the Airport’s future Fourth Parallel Runway. The sweepstakes provides aviation enthusiasts and community members across the Carolinas with a unique opportunity to own a piece of CLT history.

__Entries will be accepted through Aug. 11 at 11:59 p.m.__ One winner will be selected to receive the retired runway sign.

“From the moment we first asked on social media whether we should give away a retired runway sign, it was clear how connected people are to CLT’s history,” said Virginia Lane, CLT Social Media Manager. “We received hundreds of comments from individuals sharing memories tied to specific runways, stories of time spent watching aircraft at CLT and the sign they would choose if given the opportunity. 

“This sign represents more than airfield infrastructure, it is a piece of the Airport’s story,” added Lane. “This sweepstakes is an opportunity to celebrate the aviation enthusiasts who help preserve that history. Win a Retired Runway Sign

JetBlue is back in action at CLT after a nearly 20-year run. The Airport welcomed JetBlue with a water cannon salute on the airfield.

The popular low-cost carrier operated in Charlotte from July 2006 until it left in October 2024. 
The airline celebrated its return to the Queen City on July 9 at Gate A-29, with balloons and cupcakes for first-day passengers bound for the Sunshine State. 

__Nonstop to Fort Lauderdale, FL__

JetBlue will offer three daily nonstop flights from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Friends Gia Baker, Persona Bell, and Kendra Washington were among the first to board. The women were headed to Miami, Florida, to board a cruise and had never flown JetBlue before. 

“I looked at options on Priceline, and it was the most affordable option,” said Washington. “It was cheaper to just fly to Fort Lauderdale, and they gave us a free carry-on, so why not?”

According to the company website, [JetBlue expects to operate nearly 130 daily departures from Fort Lauderdale this summer](https://news.jetblue.com/latest-news/press-release-details/2026/JetBlue-Launches-Largest-Ever-Fort-Lauderdale-Schedule-Reinforcing-Long-Term-Commitment-to-South-Florida/default.aspx "Press Release"), marking the airline’s largest operation from that airport - over 75% more daily flights than in 2025.

In addition to Charlotte, JetBlue is also adding nonstop service from FLL to Baltimore, Cleveland, Nashville, Detroit, Houston, Chicago and Puerto Rico.

“We’re building on our already strong foundation by adding more destinations, creating more connections and giving customers even more reasons to choose JetBlue,” said JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty.

In early May, JetBlue stepped up to assist Spirit Airlines customers and employees affected by Spirit’s shutdown by offering $99 rescue fares to stranded passengers and jump seats to crew members trying to get home.

JetBlue Returns to CLT 

Passengers may not immediately notice the airfield changes, but for pilots and air traffic controllers, recent updates to CLT’s extensive runway pavement markings and signage are crucial. 

The large numbers serve as both a visual cue for pilots and a cross-reference for cockpit instruments, ensuring alignment with the correct runway during takeoffs and landings.

__Second Runway Redesignated – Meet 1R-19L__

In early July, the airfield reconfiguration reached its next milestone when the second of CLT’s three current runways was temporarily closed, then redesignated, repainted and given new signage. 

The latest transformation occurred overnight, from July 8 to July 9, when Runway 18C-36C officially became Runway 1R-19L. __Fun fact__: The last departure from the former 18C was American Airlines flight 1674 to Seattle (SEA).

Crews replaced 64 vertical sign panels and 23 surface-painted signs and markings. (The westernmost runway was redesignated back in May.)

“Closing a runway for any length of time can be a challenge,” said Trent Sellers, CLT Airport Planning Project Coordinator. “Closing a runway for a period of 12 hours has taken close to a year to plan, prepare and coordinate with our stakeholders.”

__Preparing for the Fourth Parallel__

The changes are underway to make way for CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway, which will eventually become the __new__ center runway and be designated __1C-19C__. The Fourth Parallel is scheduled to be commissioned in fall 2027. 

Here is how the runways will look when complete:

__Why all the Renumbering?__

CLT will soon have four parallel runways. While multiple parallel runways are common at busy airports (CLT is currently ranked seventh worldwide for aircraft operations), they present specific challenges. 

Because only three runways in the same orientation can be designated Left, Center, or Right,[ CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway needed a new designation ](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/whats-in-a-number-clts-new-fourth-parallel-runway-1c-19c/ "What's In A Number? Runway Numbering Explained.")to prevent confusion or errors among pilots and air traffic controllers.

Therefore, it has been adjusted by one digit (ten degrees), along with the two existing parallel runways on either side. 

The new Fourth Parallel Runway will be designated Runway 1C-19C. The Airport’s original runway (18L-36R) will retain the same magnetic heading but will be designated Runway 18-36.

The airfield reconfiguration will ensure system-wide consistency, safety and compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and regulations. The timeline also provides pilots with sufficient time to adjust to the changes and for aviation charts to be updated and synchronized.

Airfield Redesignation Continues


If you’re wondering which destinations are shaping up to be this summer’s hottest tickets, think Florida sunshine, Windy City fun and grabbing a pint at a pub or a cocktail on the beach.

CLT’s airline partners have more than 7.8 million seats on market between July and September (including seats already purchased and those still available for purchase), and their schedules reflect expected strong demand for certain destinations.

The top five domestic and international destinations for July, based on seats on market, are:

__CLT - Connecting More People__

According to the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, 157 people are moving to the Charlotte region every day. 

Local (originating) passenger traffic at CLT has also increased. In 2015, only 26% of passengers began their journeys in Charlotte. By 2026, that share had risen to 35.4% of total passenger volume.

“Charlotteans want to fly!” said CLT Airline Affairs Manager Kaitlyn Price. “That population and passenger growth allows our airline partners to grow here, too.”

__The Blue is Back__

One popular airline returning to CLT is JetBlue, which operated in Charlotte for nearly twenty years before leaving in October 2024.

The low-cost carrier will offer three daily nonstop flights from Charlotte to Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL) beginning July 9.

According to the company, JetBlue expects to operate nearly 130 daily departures from Fort Lauderdale this summer, marking the airline’s largest operation from that airport - over 75% more daily flights than in 2025.

__More Flights, More To Explore__

JetBlue brings CLT’s total number of airlines to 12, including 4 foreign-flag carriers, connecting more people around the world. 

In July 2026, CLT will serve 44 international destinations and 188 nonstop destinations. (That number can fluctuate depending on the time of year and seasonal routes.)

CLT’s Airline Affairs team is always talking to current carriers about expanding routes and new carriers about starting service here.

“Our job is to do the research and present clear, data-driven business cases to our airline partners showing them which routes are underserved at CLT,” added Price. “We continue to have those conversations with them and look forward to seeing which new routes take shape.”

__Daily Service to Abu Dhabi__

One of the most successful new carriers at CLT is Etihad Airways, which arrived on March 20, 2025.

After starting with just four flights per week, Etihad Airways now offers daily nonstop service from CLT to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), through Sept. 8.

It is CLT’s longest route to date and the first to the Middle East, offering one-stop access to more than 40 destinations across the Indian Subcontinent, Africa and Asia.

Etihad is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates.

__American Resumes Nonstop Service to Athens, Extends Paris Service__

American Airlines has its second-largest hub at CLT and is the Airport's largest carrier.

The airline is celebrating its 100th anniversary and has made significant investments using new tools and technology, including its mobile app, to enhance the travel experience by enabling customers to check in, prepay for bags, select seats and receive real-time updates.

“We’ve also made recent upgrades to the mobile app, giving customers complete control to spend less time waiting and instead provide an alternative route when plans change,” said American Airlines Customer Care Director Nisha Majaraj. “Customers will also receive a notification to gain a better understanding of the exact reason for a delay or disruption.”

So, if you are looking to visit ancient Greek ruins, enjoy fine French cuisine, or visit Happy Valley, here’s your chance to do all three.

- American Airlines has resumed its nonstop summer service to Athens, Greece (ATH) through October 23, 2026. The 10-hour nonstop flight from CLT to Athens started last June.
- AA has also extended its seasonal, daily non-stop service to Paris (CDG) through Jan. 2.
- Beginning October 5, American Airlines will begin twice-daily service to State College, Pennsylvania –  home of Penn State University. 
- Beginning Dec. 2, AA will offer twice daily service from CLT to Naples, FL.

Airline Schedules Reveal Summer Demand

A huge concrete lab on wheels has rolled into CLT for the next two weeks. 

The Federal Highway Administration has its Mobile Concrete Technology Center (MCTC) on-site at CLT to provide testing support for ongoing paving work on the runway and taxiways for the new Fourth Parallel Runway, scheduled to open in fall 2027.

The UNC Charlotte Aviation, Innovation & Research (AIR) Institute secured the research project, which is being funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The mobile lab features new concrete testing methods and other Performance Engineered Mixture technologies that deal with design and performance.

“We’re taking a more critical look at our concrete, and we’re designing and constructing it for more durable infrastructure in the future,” said Robert Conway with the Federal Highway Administration. “We expect our airfield runways to perform at a much higher standard.”

Four daily production strips of concrete pavement on Taxiways H and T, along the North End Around Taxiway Extension, will serve as test sections for the research.

“This study is to explore different speeds, different vibration rates, different energies that we are imparting to the concrete,” said Dr. Tara Cavalline, Professor and Director of the Charlotte AIR Institute. 

This research project is separate from the [Digital Twin](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/digital-twin-paves-the-way-for-smarter-runway/ "Digital Twin Project") sensors that will be embedded in the new runway later this summer.

CLT Welcomes Mobile Concrete Lab for Research


When the Bielik family arrived at CLT from Austin, Texas, for a seven-hour layover en route to Paris, France, they stopped to eat in the Plaza Food Court—and that’s when their morning plans changed.

They suddenly found themselves at a hands-only CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Awareness event in the terminal Atrium – the first time this type of Community Outreach event was offered to both the traveling public and employees sitewide.

“Our five kids (ages 6-20) needed to get some activity out of their system, and one of the Airport workers came by and promoted it, and I thought, ‘It’s time for you kids to go learn how to save some lives,'” said Dennis Bielik. “Because you never know what’s going to happen in life, so it’s always good to be prepared and not be afraid of stepping in when it matters.”

Passengers Crystal Edwards and Andrew Melton stopped by on their way back to Albany, N.Y., after a weekend graduation in Charlotte.

“We still have three hours until our flight, and I saw the signs promoting it, and I’ve never learned how to do CPR before,” admitted Edwards. 

“I took CPR training years ago, and I like to stay on top of this stuff, so it is just a good skill to know,” added Melton. “This was very educational, and the people here are awesome.”

__Important Community Outreach__

The CLT Risk, Safety & Health team partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) and Medic to host the free training session. Approximately 109 employees and 63 passengers attended. 

The emphasis was on the “Chain of Survival” and on familiarizing people with life-saving techniques, so they aren’t afraid to use them if needed. From calling 911 during a cardiac event to starting CPR compressions and using an AED, participants received a quick 90-second demonstration.

The Bee Gees' classic song “Staying Alive” was played on a loop to remind participants of the correct “beat” to maintain during CPR – 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

“Unfortunately, these types of events happen every day at the Airport,” said CLT Customer Engagement Manager Lauri Golden. “And the best thing that we can do is bring more awareness and a comfort level so that people know how to take action if and when this type of event happens around them.”

CLT has one of the highest save rates among Airports and has increased the number of AED units on campus to 196, including the terminal and parking areas. They are strategically located in accordance with the AHA recommendation that rescuers be able to reach an AED within a 3-5-minute round-trip walk to and from the emergency site.

“Of course, we have first responders in our building, and this is their critical role and function at the Airport, “added Golden. “But anyone can be a lifesaver; we can all step in.”

90 Seconds To Save a Life


Let the Independence Day celebrations begin! CLT is ready to welcome an estimated 1.6 million passengers from Friday, June 26, through Monday, July 6. 

Of that number, approximately 570,000 local passengers will begin or end their journeys in Charlotte, representing about 35.4 percent of total passenger volume.

“That’s an important indicator of how Charlotte has grown to become the 14th largest city in America, along with the Airport,” said CLT Chief Operations Officer Jeff Perry. “In 2015, only 26% of passengers were beginning their trips here. That’s precisely why we built the Terminal Lobby Expansion: to accommodate today’s demand and prepare for tomorrow’s growth.”

Over 7,600 flights will depart from CLT during the 11-day holiday period.

__TSA & CMPD Reminders__

Between 40,000-44,000 passengers will pass through CLT’s three security checkpoints daily. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects its busiest days to be July 2-3 and July 5-6. 

To help ensure smooth travels, eight new self-service [e-Gates](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/e-gates-equal-faster-security-screening/ "e-Gates") will be available to TSA PreCheck® passengers at Checkpoint 2.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department will have increased staffing at the terminal and at the Airport's main entrance. 

Passengers are advised to start with an empty bag, and double-check their luggage to ensure they are not carrying any prohibited items that could delay travel or prevent them from flying.

“If you are traveling with a firearm, please review your airline’s firearm travel policy,” said CMPD Captain Matthew Horner. “Your firearm must be packed, unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case in your checked baggage. Never, I repeat, never pack your firearm in your carry-on bag. New signage at TSA and TSA officers will also remind you of this restriction.”

__New Self-Park Option__

Beginning July 1, Express Deck Preferred will transition from valet service to a traditional self-parking deck. 

The name will remain the same, and reservations will still be made through online booking, and customers will have access to the shuttle service to and from the terminal. 

Valet service will continue to be available on Level 1 of the Hourly Deck. The [Valet parking](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/valet-parking-elevates-premium-services/ "Valet parking at CLT") space at CLT now features refined aesthetics and an enhanced experience.

__Loyal Airport Parking Customers Enjoy Rewards__

The Royal court of loyal Airport parking customers is quickly growing!

The [Royalty Program](https://www.cltairport.com/royalty-information/ "CLT Royalty Program") launched in September 2024, and by February 2025, more than 210,000 accounts had been created. 

Currently, the Royalty Program boasts 691,633 accounts.

Through the Royalty Program, loyal Airport parking customers can enjoy Royal perks and earn reward points when booking online via [parkCLT.com](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/ "parkCLT.com") or the CLT Airport App.

It features four tiers – blue, bronze, silver, and gold – and lets drivers earn points toward rewards when parking at any of CLT’s parking products. You’ll earn one point for every dollar you spend.

Each tier offers additional benefits – ranging from discounts and promotions to free upgrades, such as parking closer to the terminal.

Drivers start earning points once they create an account, register their vehicle, book online and park. Points are pending on a purchase until the exit time of their booking. After that, they are added to their Royalty Program account for future rewards.

- CLT suggests arriving at the terminal two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. During busy travel periods, you may need to allow extra time.
- Plan to reach the parking lot thirty minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal, as you might need to take a shuttle bus from your location.

- Connect with your airline or monitor the CLT Airport app for flight updates. Check in for your flight before leaving home and save your boarding pass on your mobile phone.
