CLT’s newly completed Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) is not only drawing in passengers with its stunning design but also earning environmental recognition. 

The TLE has received Two Green Globes® certification for sustainability efforts during the project's design and construction.  

The award acknowledged TLE’s energy-efficient lighting design, HVAC system improvements to enhance energy efficiency and indoor air quality, and effective construction waste management systems. 

__Renovations Draw Rave Reviews__

Planning started in 2008. Construction began in 2019, and the TLE was officially finished in September 2025. The expansion added 175,000 square feet to the lobby space and renovated an additional 191,000 square feet.  

The $608 million project is the largest construction contract in CLT history. It’s also the signature project of Destination CLT, the Airport’s $4 billion capital investment program, which includes concourse renovations and a new Fourth Parallel Runway. 

__Green Globes® Criteria__ 

Administered by the Green Building Initiative (GBI), Green Globes® is a nationally recognized green building rating system that certifies projects based on clear criteria across seven areas: project management, site, energy, water, resources, emissions and indoor environment. 

Other CLT projects that have also achieved Green Globes® certification include Concourse A Expansion Phases I and II, Concourse E Expansion and TLE’s Central Energy Plant.

TLE Wins Environmental Certification

Each April, hundreds of job seekers head to Bojangles Coliseum to attend the annual CLT Job Fair. 

It’s an opportunity for attendees to explore careers with the City of Charlotte’s Aviation Department, Airport retailers and restaurants, various airlines and federal partners like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

__A New Path__ 

In 2024, Jhon Restrepo was among the job seekers. He attended three different job fairs and ultimately secured a position as a security operations coordinator at CLT, where he enforces federal aviation security regulations.  

His role includes inspecting access-controlled areas, investigating violations, reviewing CCTV footage and working with staff, vendors and contractors to maintain compliance. 

Restrepo was born in Colombia, South America, grew up in the Bronx, New York, and owned and operated a local logistics company that focused on deliveries throughout the East Coast and Midwest. He moved to Charlotte in the summer of 2019. 

“During that time, the logistics sector was under significant pressure as consumer demand shifted heavily toward online purchasing,” said Restrepo. “After the pandemic, I decided I wanted a career change.” 

__Valuable Career Advice__  

A friend told him about a CLT Job Fair, where he networked, had his resume reviewed, and received advice on how to better present his experience to connect with hiring managers. When his current role was posted, he applied, interviewed, and got the job. He started in August 2024. 

“CLT has an excellent recruiting team,” said Restrepo. “They are incredibly helpful in answering questions, offering guidance and generously sharing their time. Attending a job fair gives candidates direct access to that insight, which can make a significant difference in how they prepare and position themselves.”

CLT Job Fair Leads To Security Career

The police officer who built the Airport’s K9 program has officially retired, and even though he received the rare honor of a white CLT Airport rocking chair with his name on it, he won’t be relaxing in it anytime soon. 

Instead, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Sergeant Donnie Penix will continue helping law enforcement in a unique way.

Sgt. Penix was recognized in February for a 30-year career that included 15 years on the SWAT team, time on the fugitive unit, and eight years in the Airport Division, where he served as the first K9 officer and later managed the team.

“They created this position a while ago, back in 2018, and I had no idea what the Airport environment was and no clue about aviation,” said Sgt. Penix. “I know it is going to sound super cheesy, but working at the Airport will restore your faith in humanity.”

__First Line of Defense__

The K9 unit at the Airport works to keep the traveling public safe and serves as a first line of defense against narcotics and explosives, patrolling all CLT property, including baggage, air freight areas and local mail. 

Ten K9s are currently assigned to CLT — two narcotic detection canines owned by the City of Charlotte and eight explosive detection canines funded and owned by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). CMPD officers, including three full-time detectives, serve as the handlers. 

“In policing, we often get pigeonholed into the mentality that it is 'us versus them,'” admitted Sgt. Penix. “Here, people generally want to have a conversation with you, and the people who work at the Airport have been more than welcoming to me. We’ve kind of grown this thing together.”

__What’s Next__

Sgt. Penix says his next role is a passion project – working with the [Boulder Crest Foundation](https://bouldercrest.org/ "Boulder Crest Foundation") to teach mental health courses for law enforcement, first responders, military and veterans.

“The Airport has afforded me the chance to be part of a community that’s allowed me to grow and develop personally and professionally,” he said. “And that’s the part I am going to miss the most – being around the people.”

CLT K9 Unit Founder Retires

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine has been named the recipient of the 2026 Willard G. Plentl, Jr. Airport Professional of the Year Award. Christine received the honor at the [North Carolina Airports Association](https://ncairports.org/ "NC Airports Association") (NCAA) Conference banquet in Charlotte on March 19. 

The award recognizes an individual who exhibits leadership, a commitment to aviation, and has a positive impact on the aviation industry in North Carolina.

“Just being nominated is an honor, but winning the award is truly amazing,” said Christine. “Being recognized by my peers for the passion that I have for aviation, and especially CLT, is very humbling, and I thank everyone who had a hand in it. I love being a part of what we do and take great joy in helping others grow their own passion for aviation.” 

Christine has been a guiding force at CLT for nearly 30 years, starting as a planning assistant in the City of Charlotte’s Aviation Department. 

In his current role as CIO, he manages the planning, design, construction and facilities maintenance of the Airport’s 6,000-acre campus.

As an advocate for the aviation profession and workforce development, Christine helped establish the UNC Charlotte AIR Institute – a unique partnership with CLT to prepare students for Airport and aviation careers.

He also serves as an adjunct professor at UNC Charlotte, teaching courses on airport development and inspiring the next generation.

Christine’s active involvement with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) led to Charlotte hosting the SEC-AAAE conference in March 2025, showcasing the city to airport professionals from across the country. He also serves as a mentor for those pursuing their Certified Member (CM) and Accredited Airport Executive (AAE) certifications.

CLT Executive Receives Prestigious NC Award

Etihad Airways officially arrived at CLT on March 20. The Airbus A350-1000 flew nonstop from Abu Dhabi's Al Zayed International Airport (AUH) in the the United Arab Emirates, landing in Charlotte at approximately 11:42 a.m. EST.

The aircraft was greeted with a water cannon salute on the airfield.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is organizing a gift card donation drive to support TSA employees working without base pay since the partial government shutdown began February 14, 2026. TSA employees have remained on duty without pay, carrying the responsibility of keeping passengers safe and airport operations running smoothly.

Supporting TSA Employees at CLT Airport

CLT’s concessions lineup (managed by HMSHost by Avolta) just got a little hoppier, thanks to a new brewing company establishment and an exclusive new beer.

“First in Flight” Pilsner will be available on tap exclusively at Sugar Creek Brewing’s new location on Concourse A, which opened in late February. 

The draft was developed under the guidance of Sugar Creek’s co-founder, president, and native Charlottean Joe Vogelbacher, who is also a Master Cicerone — one of only 19 in the world. That’s a special designation for a professional beer connoisseur who has studied beer, passed a rigorous certification program and achieved the highest level of expertise.

“It took me about five years of studying for it, maybe a couple of thousand hours of studying,” said Vogelbacher. “And I am a licensed engineer, a college graduate, and really, it was harder than any exams I took in college!”

__Flavorful Finish__

Vogelbacher says CLT customers can expect a crisp and refreshing beer with a clean finish and all-American ingredients. “We get our hops flown in from the Yakima Valley of Washington, and our grains come in from Minnesota,” he added. “It’s crisp but still has some backbone and some malty sweetness and some hint of the bread crust, caramel and cracker, with floral hop aroma.”

The company’s trademark is “First in Taste,” and the beer’s name also pays tribute to North Carolina’s aviation pioneering history. Its location on Concourse A is intentional.

“If you look at where the Airport has graciously placed us, it’s right at the beginning of the Wright Brothers' path, which is really cool,” admits Vogelbacher. “So, you can trace that path, and we thought, well, you might as well have a beer dedicated to them while you’re tracing that path, so that’s where we came up with ‘First in Flight’ beer.”

__Locally Owned & Founded in 2013__

Sugar Creek Brewing was established in Charlotte in 2013 by Vogelbacher and co-founder Eric Flanigan. It currently operates in a renovated warehouse on Southside Drive near Uptown, with plans to move to Gastonia, N.C., to the former Cavendish Brewing Space in late 2026 or early 2027. 

They’ve been a CLT vendor for eight years, supplying beer to many Airport restaurants, and Vogelbacher said they are thrilled to have finally landed their own location.

“We’re excited to bring our handcrafted, expertly formulated Carolina beers to the patrons of one of the busiest Airports in the world and be able to put money right back into the Charlotte community.”

New Brew Exclusive to CLT


A new firefighting device has been put into service at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), developed entirely in-house and potentially serving as an innovative model for other airports in tackling parking deck fires, electric-vehicle fires or fires in restricted areas and surface lots.

It’s called “RAMP 17,” which stands for Rapid Attack Multi-Purpose, and while it may look like a typical pickup truck, it’s anything but.

This F-350 can be operated by a single firefighter and has been custom retrofitted with a 60-gallon compressed-air foam system, eight car-fire blankets (each weighing 65 pounds), hose couplings and fittings, fire extinguishers, a specialized EV undercarriage nozzle and an EV-safe plug.

It also features 32 individually programmable, dual-function LED spotlights for use in low-light or smoky environments, along with pop-out steps on the truck for firefighter access. The vehicle height is 6 feet 8 inches — just low enough to clear a seven-foot parking deck entrance.

“Before this, we didn’t have a vehicle at the Airport that could enter the parking decks and make it all the way through,” said CLT Fleet Manager Matthew Alexander. “We can now respond quickly and keep a fire contained to help get it under control fast.”

__Collaboration Project__

RAMP 17 was a joint effort between CLT Operations, Fleet Services/Facilities, Emergency Management and the Charlotte Fire Department. CLT Heavy Equipment Service Technician Master, Michael Hart, installed all the equipment and programmed the system.

CLT began evaluating the need for such a vehicle after a January 2024 tabletop exercise simulating an EV fire in a parking deck, which highlighted the increasing presence of EVs at the airport. 

CLT estimates that between 200 and 300 electric vehicles park each month in the Hourly Deck, Express Deck, Preferred and Valet. (The Airport also has 18 public charging stations on site in the Hourly Deck, with additional chargers in the Express Deck Preferred (EDP) accessible to both EDP and Valet users.)

Then, in August 2024, just seven months after the exercise, an accidental car engine fire on the fourth floor of the Airport’s Hourly Deck spread to three other parked vehicles.

That incident was nearly identical to the simulation (excluding the EV component) and underscored the prior challenges of fire response in parking decks.

“We would have to pull up with the fire truck, and they’d have to unload all of the hose, run it up the stairs, hook up the water to the standpipes and charge the standpipes,” said Charlotte Fire's CLT Division Fire Chief Justin Field. “You’re talking 10-15 minutes or more - by the time they get on scene, before they can actually start putting the fire out.”

“When somebody fully decked out in turnout gear, they’ve got an extra 85 pounds of gear on their body already, plus 65 pounds for the fire blankets, trying to go up four, five, six flights of stairs,” added CLT Battalion Fire Chief Kevin Rink. “This truck has eight of those blankets already on there and the extra equipment.”

Now, the RAMP 17 operator can arrive and immediately begin extinguishing a fire using the fluorine-free foam system to prevent flames from spreading to other vehicles. In an EV fire, batteries can take much longer to cool and may reignite.

__Cost Savings__

The customized RAMP 17 was built for approximately $130K, covering the truck, necessary parts and installation. (A conventional fire truck can cost between $300K and $500K.) However, there is currently nothing on the market like the CLT-created vehicle. 

“You can buy more of the brush truck type style, which has a 300-gallon water tank, a separate pump and engine to run that pump in the back,” added Alexander. “That’s what other Airports are using, like Los Angeles (LAX) and Miami (MIA).”

RAMP 17 can also be used on the airfield, ramp and anywhere on Airport property. It is a CLT-owned and serviced vehicle that will undergo an annual vehicle and safety inspection. 

According to Alexander, “CLT recognizes the importance of being prepared for any situation. While we hope to never experience an EV fire at CLT, we’re glad to know we have this tool to be able to respond quickly and efficiently.”

CLT Develops New Firefighting Tool


For Charlotte transplant Markus Lachenmeir, traveling is in his blood. He’s visited all 50 U.S. states and 56 different countries, and this spring he will add another destination to his list.

Lachenmeir is among the first passengers booked on the inaugural flight from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Abu Dhabi (AUH) operated by Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 

Etihad plans to operate four weekly nonstop flights from CLT utilizing its flagship Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The route was initially scheduled to start on May 4, 2026; however, strong bookings led Etihad to move up the start date to March 20, 2026.

__Inaugural Pull__

Lachenmeir said he began considering a possible trip as soon as the new route was announced last spring. “An inaugural flight is always a special experience, especially if it’s a huge one like this,” said Lachenmeier, who plans to connect with business colleagues in India, but not before enjoying a few days in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.

“Experiencing the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, visiting the Qasr Al Watan presidential palace and the Qasr Al Hosn Fort are on my to-do list, as is the Zayed National Museum (which opened in Dec. 2025) with its stunning architecture,” he added.

Lachenmeir was born and raised in Munich, Germany, moved to the U.S. twelve years ago and recently became a U.S. citizen. He works as a project manager in warehouse automation and robotics, including an early-career role at the Munich Airport.

“Being in that environment, surrounded by people from all over the place, and seeing what impact easy travel can have on people’s lives, made aviation and the airport even more special,” said Lachenmeir, who became an avid plane spotter here in Charlotte.

__CLT’s Longest Flight__

The 15-hour flight to Abu Dhabi will be CLT’s longest nonstop flight and also the longest for Lachenmeir.

“Twelve hours so far was the most, and that is really stretching it,” he admitted. “However, the Dreamliner is an amazing plane which is quiet and supports these long flights because of its higher air pressure and higher humidity onboard, just like the Airbus 350. They really are the most comfortable planes for a long journey like this.”

Etihad Airways said it identified Charlotte as a promising hub and a fast-growing city that would meet the demand for one-stop connections to the Middle East and beyond, especially to India and Southeast Asia.

CLT Traveler Books Inaugural Etihad Flight


It harkens back to the golden age of travel, and it’s quickly become an eye-catching piece of aviation history recently installed on Concourse E.

A rare section of  a Pan Am Boeing 727-227's fuselage, featuring the airline's iconic “billboard” livery and globe, is attracting the attention of many travelers, prompting them to stop and share photos on social media. 

“After recently moving here, it’s amazing to see not only the history of aviation but also the pieces of art as well!” said traveler Schon Loesch.

The installation measures 7 feet high by 14 feet wide and was restored and custom-fabricated for CLT by MotoArt Studios in Torrance, Calif. 

For many years, the plane (Registration N385PA, built in 1970) sat in storage at the Smyrna/Rutherford County, Tenn. Airport before MotoArt acquired several sections in 2023, which were then precision-cut and shipped back to the company’s studio. The goal was to maintain the aircraft’s authentic finish. 

“Some of the original panels were missing, and rather than replacing them with new material, we chose to install clear Plexiglass,” said Project Manager Kevin White. “It allows viewers to see the internal structure of the aircraft while maintaining authenticity. In areas where the skin had damage, we again used clear Plexiglass, not as restoration, but as preservation.” 

A 10-person team salvaged, fabricated, polished, crated, coordinated logistics and then shipped the Pan Am section via flatbed truck on a six-day cross-country trip from California to North Carolina so it could be mounted at CLT.  

While Pan Am began service to CLT in October 1983, this particular aircraft entered service with Braniff International Airways, then flew with Northwest Airlines, and joined Pan Am’s domestic fleet in March 1989. It remained in service until the airline ceased operations in 1991.

Yes, it’s the South, and no, we don’t usually face harsh winter weather. However, when two very different back-to-back systems hit the Carolinas, CLT was ready for both, thanks to extensive preparation and new equipment.

The first event, called Winter Storm Fern, impacted the Charlotte area on January 24-25, bringing ice, freezing rain and sleet to a large part of the country. The following weekend, January 30-February 1, Winter Storm Gianna dropped a historic 11 inches of heavy, continuous snowfall at CLT, lasting more than 24 hours.

Winter weather preparations began as early as last August, with teams and equipment on the runways and taxiways practicing formations and moving materials. 

“There’s the Blue Angels, and then we have our Snow Angels,” said Kevin Wu, CLT’s Director of Operations for Emergency Services. “The coordination that they have and the patterns that they take, it’s like clockwork.”

__New Equipment Clocks In__

CLT also recently took delivery of two new multi-function plows (a plow-broom-blower combination), three new dedicated front brooms and a new spreader truck. Approximately 60 tons of solid deicer were used during Fern, and nearly 120 tons during Gianna. 

The new equipment joined three vintage multi-function plows from Calgary and a liquid deicer already in the fleet.

For each weather event, CLT had 300 staff on site for the response, working in two shifts around the clock. This included crews on the airfield and behind the scenes, including in the Airport Emergency Operations Center, which served as the central hub for coordinating the storm response.

“When you get into the actual event, you are kind of having to make audibles and do things you didn’t practice,” said CLT Assistant Facilities Maintenance Director Scott Kincaid. “But since the team has the familiarity with each other and the equipment, it allows them to respond accordingly and be able to function seamlessly.”

All three of CLT’s runways were closed for six hours in near white-out conditions on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 3 p.m. to around 9 p.m. (Even our snow removal equipment had to be deiced!) Snow was removed, stored, and is still being hauled away almost a week later; however, CLT was nearly fully operational within 12 hours of each weather event.

__Safety First__

While weather-related flight delays and cancellations were inevitable, safety remained the top priority before, during, and after both storms.

“It was very methodical and professionally executed,” said CLT’s Director of Operations for Regulatory Compliance Joe Conklin. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to recover these runways and taxiways the way that they did.”

Winter Storm Recovery Mode

Winter Storm Gianna has exited the Charlotte region, but not before dumping 11 inches of snow at CLT.

The Airport was well prepared, with a 300-member snow team on site throughout the weather event, to clear the airfield, roadways and pedestrian areas. 

CLT deployed a fleet of specialized snow-removal equipment, including multi-function plows, brooms, material spreaders and liquid deicers. Contractors also assisted with loaders and specialized snow pushing. - CLT is beginning a gradual return to operations and all three runways are now open.

- Passengers might still encounter delays or cancellations as schedules are set by our airline partners, and flight crews and aircraft are repositioned.

- Passengers should check directly with their airline for the latest flight information __before__ coming to the Airport.

- __As of 3:30 pm Sunday, Feb. 1__, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint 2 is currently open for TSA Precheck and Standard screening, and Checkpoint 1 is open for Standard screening.

- Select retail, food, and beverage concessionaires are open in the terminal.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory that remains in effect until Monday, February 2, 2026, at 9 AM.

Snow Moves Out, Operations Move Forward

For the second straight weekend, CLT and the Charlotte area will experience winter weather. First, it was Fern, and now the Airport is preparing for Winter Storm Gianna. 

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that remains in effect from 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, until 7 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. Heavy snow accumulations and high winds are expected in the Piedmont of North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina.

Preparations for ice and snow events at CLT begin months in advance, with teams on the runways in equipment, practicing formations and moving materials. Nearly 300 CLT staff will be on site responding to the event. 

“It is like a choreographed dance with big equipment on the runways and taxiways,” said Scott Kincaid, CLT Assistant Facilities Maintenance Director. “We have an incredibly competent team, some of the best operators in the world, and I feel very confident we are ready to handle this storm.”

Kincaid said he expects this storm to mainly be a snow-pushing and brooming event. To accomplish that, CLT deploys a fleet of specialized snow removal equipment including plows, brooms, material spreaders and liquid deicers.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) welcomed nearly 54 million passengers in 2025, making it the second busiest year on record, despite a 9% decrease from record-breaking 2024.

That record reflected years of unprecedented growth in the region. 

International travel continued to be strong in 2025, down just 2% from 2024 and up 10% from 2023. CLT currently serves 43 international destinations and will begin nonstop service to Abu Dhabi, UAE, via Etihad Airways on March 20.

Passengers seeking a new place to relax and unwind before or after their flights will soon have another option at CLT. 

A Capital One Lounge is planned for the Airport and will be located on the mezzanine level of Concourse A, near Gates 21-29. 

The 14,000-square-foot lounge is expected to feature expansive airfield views, locally influenced menus and dedicated workspaces. No opening date has been announced.  

The Capital One Lounge will join numerous other offerings at CLT Airport, including: 

- American Airlines Admirals Club (Concourse B and Concourse D) 
- American Express Centurion Lounge (Concourse D/E Connector) 
- Delta Sky Club (Concourse A) 
- Provisions by Admirals Club (Concourse A, at Gate A-1) 
- The Club at CLT (A Connector) 
- USO Center (Atrium – upper level)

The USO Center at CLT is one of three Airport USO Centers in North Carolina and the busiest among more than 250 USO Centers worldwide. It is open 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is staffed by about 300 volunteers. 

The newest additions to CLT include the stylish Delta Sky Club, which opened in December 2025 and features 14,000 square feet and seating for 246 guests. 

American Airlines added Provisions by Admirals Club in Summer 2025 as a convenient “grab and go” concept for travelers with limited time who want a quick snack. American Airlines has also announced a Flagship Lounge for CLT but has not announced a timeline.

Trying to stream that movie while waiting at the gate? Need to download that photo or email attachment? It will soon be even faster and easier to access Wi-Fi at the Airport.

Wi-Fi at CLT is getting a $5.9 million boost – a complete overhaul and replacement of the existing public Wi-Fi system in the Airport terminal. 

Charlotte City Council has approved a three-year contract with GC&E Systems Group, located in Atlanta, GA. 

“Passengers can expect better coverage throughout most of the public-facing areas of the terminal,” according to Norvell Barber, CLT Director of Technology. “Overall bandwidth is increasing as well, allowing for faster connection speeds and streaming capabilities.”

__Usage skyrocketing__

To put the need in perspective, over a 90-day period from early October 2025 to early January 2026, CLT transmitted more than 579 terabytes of data to users of phones, tablets, laptops and other devices. (One Terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes)

“If you think about it in these terms, a typical hour-long Netflix show uses around 3 gigabytes for high-definition streaming,” explained Jason Varner, CLT Technology Infrastructure Manager. “So that’s around 333 hour-long shows inside of each terabyte. So, 579 terabytes of data are equivalent to approximately 193,000 hours of HD streaming. It’s a TON of data!”

During the same 90-day period, 91,168 unique devices connected to the public Wi-Fi network within the terminal.

__Last Update__

The public Wi-Fi at CLT was installed in the early 2000s and updated in 2012, ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. However, demand has grown significantly along with passenger traffic, which hit a record 58.8 million passengers in 2024.

Ongoing construction projects over the years, including the recently completed Terminal Lobby Expansion, have also created coverage gaps. “It shifts the walls and boundaries that the wireless signal must get through, access points get moved and it interrupts service,” said Varner.

The upgrades will increase the number of Wireless Access Points (WAPs) from 238 to approximately 300, allowing for more simultaneous connections.

__Work to start in 2026__

The project work will likely begin in 2026; however, completion will take a few years, with a phased approach.

“We are mindful of not wanting to interrupt passenger flow and experience,” added Varner. “Certain aspects can only be done after hours, and there is only a small window of time between midnight and 3 am when there are no flights.”

Public Wi-Fi will remain free for CLT passengers, with an End User License Agreement (EULA) that users can accept by clicking.

Stronger Signals Ahead: CLT Set to Boost Public Wi-Fi

A new fee will take effect soon for travelers who still lack a REAL ID.  

For passengers without a state-issued REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID, such as a Passport, __TSA will charge a $45 fee beginning February 1, 2026, to verify identity at security checkpoints.__ The fee will offset the cost of security and technology.  

- The modernized, alternative identity verification system, called TSA [Confirm.ID ](https://www.tsa.gov/tsaconfirm-id "Confirm.ID")will be valid for a 10-day travel period.  

- Passengers should go to [pay.gov](https://www.pay.gov/public/form/start/1820857221 "pay.gov") in advance and bring their receipt and any form of ID to the security checkpoint. 

“Identity verification is a critical layer of security,” said Greg Hawko, TSA Federal Security Director for North Carolina. “The vast majority of travelers provide acceptable identification, and we are responsible for ensuring every passenger is who they claim to be and conduct security screening accordingly.” 

REAL ID enforcement began in May 2025, and according to TSA, 94% of airline travelers now arrive at U.S. Airports with REAL ID or an acceptable form of ID. 

__TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Lands at CLT__ 

[TSA PreCheck Touchless ID](https://www.tsa.gov/touchless-id "TSA PreCheck Touchless ID") is now available at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). American Airlines is partnering with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for Touchless ID, and AAdvantage® members are eligible to opt in. 

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID enhances security screening by using facial comparison technology to verify identity more quickly and efficiently. Enrolled travelers can move through the dedicated lane at CLT’s Checkpoint 2 with ease, enjoying a smoother, more convenient airport experience.  

“We look forward to making your travel experience more seamless and more enjoyable,” said Jose Bonilla, TSA Deputy Federal Security Director.  

American Airlines Advantage members must opt in to TSA PreCheck Touchless ID via their AAdvantage® profile at [aa.com](https://www.aa.com/homePage.do "aa.com") or on the mobile app, and upload the required information, including a valid passport. They will need to renew annually.  

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is available at 15 select airports across five airlines, but will expand to 65 airports in spring 2026. Currently, only American Airlines offers it at CLT.

CLT soared in the new year with new routes, plans for new art and ongoing construction of a new runway – the only one currently under construction in the U.S. 

The $608 million Terminal Lobby Expansion was completed in September 2025, and the fourth parallel runway is approaching its halfway point, with a scheduled opening in fall 2027. Runway redesignation will begin in May 2026.

__Concourse D-E Renovations Progressing__

CLT’s busiest concourse—Concourse E—is currently undergoing exciting renovations. Expect new Terrazzo flooring, gate renumbering, updated wayfinding signage, improved flight information displays, and new moving walkways to enhance passenger flow and shorten walking distances (scheduled for completion in March 2027).

On Concourse D, restroom renovations are underway, along with electrical upgrades, ticket-level renovations, and new carpeting (scheduled for completion in late 2026).

__Parking Rate Increase__

Passengers parking at CLT Airport will see added amenities in the new year, including expanded services and facility upgrades, along with a slight rate increase – the first since November 2023. 

The [new rates](https://www.cltairport.com/news/press-releases/item/airport-parking-rates-to-increase-march-1/ "New Parking Rate Schedule") will take effect on March 1, 2026. 

Dynamic pricing applies to all reservation-enabled lots and decks and will vary based on demand and the time of year. Currently, approximately 17,000—or about 65%—of CLT’s 25,000 parking spots are available for online pre-booking only.

__Royalty Program Grows__

__New Artwork & Relocations__

The iconic “First in Flight” aviation mobile will make its “re-debut” on Concourse D before the end of 2026.

The kinetic mobile, created by the late sculptor George Greenamyer (1939-2023), hung in the Atrium from 1997 until it was removed in 2025 for cleaning and relocation. The move will improve sightlines, offer a view of uptown Charlotte and maintain public access.

Additionally, eight to ten new murals will be installed in the terminal throughout the year, along with a new metal wall sculpture at two locations on Concourse D as part of the ongoing renovation. The rotating murals will feature new art and artists at various stages of their career development.

Visitors can also look for a new installation of artwork on glass at specific locations on Concourse E and additional sites in the terminal. 

__Expanded Holiday Decor__

CLT’s new holiday décor was a hit in 2025 (featured in [The Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2025/11/28/airports-christmas-decorations-trees-displays/ "Washington Post") and on the Today Show) and will expand in 2026. 

The popular blue, gold, and silver garland baubles displayed on the flight information screens and baggage carousels delighted travelers, along with the always-popular reindeer – Wilbur and Orville in the Atrium, and the Peace Doves located on the D/E Connector and in the Ticket Lobby at Checkpoint 3.
