CLT’s iconic “First in Flight” aviation mobile has moved to its new home on Concourse D.

The kinetic sculpture and clock tower, created by the late sculptor George Greenamyer (1939-2023), hung in the Atrium from 1997 until it was removed in 2025 for cleaning and relocation.

The move will improve sightlines, offer a view of uptown Charlotte and maintain public access.

“Over the years, the terminal has undergone numerous construction projects, renovations and expansions to introduce new amenities, services and concessions, all while supporting a growing number of travelers,” said Lauri Golden, Customer Engagement Manager.

“With these improvements, the opportunity emerged to relocate the mobile to a space that offers greater visibility of the sculpture’s many features as well as views of the Charlotte skyline,” added Golden. “Its new location complements the renovation of this concourse, which features a range of enhancements and upgrades—highlighted by the First in Flight mobile.”

__16 Flying Machines Featured__

“First In Flight” features four levels and 16 different flying machines that circle the clock tower, each representing a significant element of aviation history.

The handcrafted metal pieces feature the Wright Brothers Flyer, a steam-powered helicopter, a Dornier flying boat, the Space Shuttle, Charles Lindbergh’s “Spirit of St. Louis,” a Graf Zeppelin, a Douglas DC-3, and a paper airplane, inspired by a congratulatory letter from former CLT Airport Director Jerry Orr to Greenamyer, the selected artist.![First in Flight - Con D -6](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/3oSuc9ai96SGTSJ5uCsts8/9726f78cbf7146dae96a97096f86e396/First_in_Flight_-_Con_D_-6.jpg)

Atop the mobile is an analog clock featuring an employee in a US Airways uniform, a nod to the Airport’s hub status. (Piedmont Airlines merged with USAir in 1989 and later changed its name to US Airways in 1997.)

__Extensive Planning Required__

The relocation of the mobile onto Concourse D required extensive planning and collaboration among multiple Airport departments, including Maintenance, Airport Development and other key stakeholders and contractors.

Coordinating the installation with the ongoing renovation project was essential to ensure the artwork could be safely installed while minimizing impacts to Airport operations and construction activities.![20250922 053459314 iOS](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/4ugvndREDWnWAZ6Hxb4v7G/0a3adba4d788ef8c9acdcc4c8c100729/20250922_053459314_iOS.jpg)
*(Pictured Above: September 2025 removal)*

“The first phase of the project involved removing the mobile from the Atrium and transporting it to the Airport's art warehouse,” said Charles Tabor, CLT Exhibit and Amenity Lead. “Due to the size and complexity of the artwork, the removal was completed over the course of three overnight shifts.”

“While the mobile was in storage, it underwent a comprehensive restoration that included professional cleaning, repainting and the replacement of several mechanical components to ensure its long-term stability and operation,” added Tabor.

Charlie King, CLT Chief Maintenance Mechanic, has maintained the mobile throughout his 31-year career at the Airport and said there are specific challenges with a kinetic mobile.

“Years ago, we tried to start and stop the mobile at night and in the morning,” said King. “Eventually we figured out that it was better to leave it running at a low speed all the time, 24/7. That’s because it takes so much torque to start all four sections, and once it gets up to speed, it takes very little effort to keep it going because of momentum. We replace the roller bearings on a 6-month schedule.”

__Still To Come In 2026-27__

A new art installation by artist Lynn Basa is also coming to Concourse D. The metal wall sculpture, called “Terminal Velocity,” will be placed at two sites near gates D8 and D9. The installation should be completed by mid-November 2026.

Iconic Mobile Moves to New Location

The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB) at CLT has rolled out its best Bavarian blue-and-white decor and raised a stein this month for Oktoberfest.

The restaurant on Concourse D also features a new chef’s special menu for the fall celebration, with a little twist on traditional German foods.

The Giant Pretzel with Obatzda is served with a rich, creamy spread of beer, spices and herbs. Guests may also enjoy an Oktoberfest sausage board, traditional German Sauerbraten with a side of braised cabbage and potato salad and a Kaiserschmarrn Funnel Cake.

HMSHost by Avolta Chef Aaron Wilson said many customers have remarked that it feels like a little slice of Germany at CLT, and they should know. “Because the Munich flights on Lufthansa actually depart from gate D-12, we have people from Germany come through and say, ‘You know what, you are doing it right!’ So, I love that for us,” said Wilson.

OMB’s Oktoberfest runs through October 31. Prost! (Cheers!)

And if you’re interested in visiting the real Germany, CLT has you covered with nonstop flights to Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). Click here to book with any of our [airline partners.](https://www.cltairport.com/airport-info/airlines/ "CLT Airline Partners")

Oktoberfest Rules at OMB

Around the holidays of his sophomore year in college, CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine flew home from Daytona Beach, Fla., to Philadelphia. His grandparents bought him the ticket, which included a layover in Charlotte — a stop that would ultimately change the course of his life.

“I landed in Charlotte, walked through the Atrium and I said to myself, ‘This is where I want to be, I want work here, I want to be in Charlotte,'" he said. “After that, I changed my major to essentially get an airport management degree.”

Upon graduating from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 1996, he worked for a year at an aviation nonprofit in Washington, D.C. “I did not want to be in that at all, so I really focused my attention on trying to get an airport job. I really wanted to be in Charlotte, so I proceeded to call the Human Resources manager at the time, pretty much every other week to ask if there was a job posting yet,” Christine said.

Persistence paid off. An aviation job was posted. He applied and got it. Now after 29 years of a very momentous career at CLT, he’s saying goodbye.

Christine originally joined the Aviation Department as an administrative officer, working for both Planning and Human Resources. “I was in that position only about six months. Then the airport planner left, and I started assuming his responsibilities. I didn’t get promoted, just started doing what he was doing to help the aviation director,” Christine said.

More responsibility and later promotions – as Airport planner and chief operating officer - continued his way over the years until eventually he was named to his current role as chief infrastructure officer. “My career has been blessed by the opportunity for growth and the experiences I have had that have helped me become an airport executive.”

In his nearly three decades at CLT, Christine has overseen construction of the third parallel runway, Rental Car/Hourly Deck, Express Decks, concourse renovations, Concourse A and E expansions, East Terminal Expansion, Terminal Lobby Expansion and Fourth Parallel Runway construction.

As he begins packing up his office to begin his next chapter as Raleigh Durham International Airport’s senior vice president/chief development officer, for him there is no question what he’ll miss most about CLT. “I'm going to miss the people, I'm going to miss working with everybody here,” Christine said. “It is an amazing group of people that did what we did here, and they are what I am going to miss the absolute most.”

His career in aviation, however, had a slight twist from his original plans. Growing up in Philadelphia, he had dreams of enlisting in the Air Force and eventually visiting space as an astronaut. “Back then you had to have 20/20 vision to be a pilot, and I did have that when I got to college but then I lost it,” Christine said. “I really didn’t know what to do initially when that happened, but I just knew that I wanted to be involved with aviation.”

Looking back, some of his most cherished memories at CLT were when employees throughout the Airport lent a helping hand. “Some of the snowstorms that we've been through here, those were lasting memories for me. The 14 inches of snow that we got in 2004, the 12 inches we got this past winter, those were really impactful to the Airport, the operation and to the people working to keep the Airport open and operational,” Christine said.

He’ll also never forget the events of Sept. 11 and seeing first-hand how it changed aviation, riding on the first airplane to land on the Third Parallel Runway when it opened in 2010 and seeing the start and finish of the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE). “The lobby had to continue to be built while we used the existing facility every day,” he said. “So, in order to be successful in adding the expansion, it involved every group in the Aviation Department and our external stakeholders TSA, the airlines, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Charlotte Fire Department, everyone. Everyone who touched that building for five and a half years was either impacted or part of the development of the lobby expansion. That project was executed with minimal impact to the customer. Everyone working together and finding the path to get us from start to finish as it evolved was really a testament to this department and the people who work here. It was not just one group; it was everyone involved.”

After he leaves for Raleigh, Christine said he hopes CLT will continue to grow and evolve. The opening of the Fourth Parallel Runway, Concourse C expansion and creation of tunnels leading to the Atrium are some projects on the horizon for CLT’s future.

“I have been blessed to have been a part of this organization for nearly 30 years, and I’ve had a wonderful time and amazing opportunities. There were challenging times and hard times in there too but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t change a thing,” Christine said. “I’ve been blessed to be here, and it’s been an honor to serve this Airport, this community and this department for as long as I have. I will always cherish it, and I will miss it.”

It was hot, sunny and the perfect day to pull a nearly 100,000-pound jet 15 feet.

More than 20 teams gathered Sept. 15 on CLT’s airfield to put their strength to the test for the 2026 American Airlines' Jet Pull. (You can watch the [Jet Pull video](https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/email.publicinput.com/el/eyJzIjo1NTEyOTEzNywiaSI6IjI3NDU0MGY0LWE2YWEtNGFkYy04ZTg0LWU5NzdmN2Y2Mzg5OSIsImUiOjExNjc0NSwiYyI6MTA4MywidSI6NzIzMjE2OTQsImEiOmZhbHNlfQ__;!!HEEjagIHOpYt8A!6nkM_VYpDINkL3oRqWf1QvtgeW7denaZ7H8VoJkwoYfLXGNOZLvvUoFu44UWdaPg5eABPUirA8ZbZcCt5FKzFiI$ "American Airlines Jet Pull") here.)

In the end, Besco Power, Baggage Delivers won, pulling the Boeing 737-800 jet in 6.92 seconds across the finish line. Landing second was Team Prospect boasting 7.20 seconds.
Keystone arrived in third place, securing 7.45 seconds. The Aviation Department finished sixth with 7.73 seconds.

“Our team did a good job,” Administration Division Manager Angela Maynard said. “The time goes by really fast, faster than you expect. Next time though, if they host it again, we know what to do.” Maynard also served as the team captain for the Aviation Department team.

The event was the first of three planned to raise money for the American Airlines Family Fund, which assists active and retired American Airlines' team members. In the coming weeks, Jet Pulls will also be held at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Oct. 14 and at Miami International Airport (MIA) on Nov. 10.

Since 1999, the American Airlines Family Fund has provided more than 6,500 grants and $11 million in assistance to team members and their families facing unexpected hardships.

“It’s just a great way to bring people together; the team that pulls together wins together,” American Airlines’ Director of Customer Care Nisha Maharaj said as she watched the different teams compete. She, like many in attendance, cheered on not only her organization’s team but others as well.

Most participants jumped at bragging rights to proclaim to family and friends that they once pulled a jet 15 feet.

“This is a unique experience that hasn’t been here in a while and I’ve never done it before,” Community Engagement Coordinator Byron Ruff said as he waited for the Aviation team’s turn. “I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by.” After signing up for the event, he admits trying to prepare for the competition. “I worked out doing seated cable row exercises to get ready,” Ruff said. “The exercises didn’t help much though, teamwork and collectively pulling simultaneously is what gives you the ultimate advantage when pulling a jet.”

Director of Risk, Safety & Health Ella Moultrie came prepared. “I got my gloves,” she said. “I got my (safety) vest. I’m ready. Where else can you work where they let you pull a plane?”

Procurement Officer Drew Buckner, who was also on the Aviation Department’s team, has already started planning for possible future events. “Once you get started (pulling the plane) it goes fast,” he said. “It was a great experience and a great environment to do it in. I want to do it again and claim the number one spot for aviation.”

This year’s CLT Runway 5K on October 17 not only sold out in record time (about 15 minutes) but will also feature runners and walkers from 25 states and Washington, D.C. The oldest registered entrant is 86 years “young.”

Several are returning participants, while others, including Lauren Hickman and 11-year-old Nahum M., are first-timers.

The event will be a special one for the pair, who formed a bond in the classroom at Tabernacle Christian School – Hope Allen Center for Exceptional Children in Hickory, N.C.![Lauren Hickman2](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/6z0FMPDp2JDOWJjscEaHsy/7dbebe1ed56527c4109b9e143d134578/Lauren_Hickman2.jpg)

“Nahum and I have been talking about doing this run together for over a year,” said Hickman. “So getting the opportunity to finally do it is incredibly exciting for both of us! I can’t wait to cross that finish line with him.”

__Teacher-Student Teamwork__

Hickman is a special education teacher, and Nahum, a fifth grader, is her former student. He sustained a traumatic brain injury at age five and is now quadriplegic and nonverbal. Despite his challenges, Hickman says Nahum can express excitement through his face and arms.

“I sent him a video telling him we were officially registered, and he smiled from ear to ear and immediately got that arm swinging!” she said. “That was all the response I needed to know he was excited.”

The two are now officially “in training” and are practicing together for the 5K. Hickman will run the course while pushing Nahum in a special racing chair borrowed from the nonprofit group “Ainsley’s Angels.”![Lauren Hickman](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/3SlXnKr0mpV1CnfyheXZqi/bdcc0e04bcbac4ba06742ccb49d1c24e/Lauren_Hickman.jpg)

Hickman, who holds a master’s degree in special education from Liberty University, says she hopes their participation in the CLT Runway 5K will inspire others to participate.

“So often, people see a disability and immediately focus on limitations or what someone cannot do,” said Hickman. “My hope is that this race is a picture of what inclusion can look like: sometimes we simply need to remove a barrier, provide the right support, and give someone the opportunity to participate. Every person has value, gifts, and a God-given purpose worth celebrating.”

__On Your Mark, Get Set, Race!__

This year’s CLT Runway 5K will take place on Saturday, October 17, starting at 7:30 a.m. Since its launch in 2019, the race has raised more than $317,000 for Central Piedmont Opportunity Scholarships, which support students pursuing aviation-related careers.![Runway 5k 2025 Still Frames 1](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/1qaHgQxoqF5DjqRzucxDnm/bf762aeb39aca1c000b8f7aec780b8a6/Runway_5k_2025_Still_Frames_1.jpg)

Running With Purpose

The countdown is on!

CLT’s new Fourth Parallel Runway project is now exactly one year away from its scheduled commissioning in fall 2027.

The $1 billion project—which broke ground in 2023—will be designated Runway 1C-19C.

The 10,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide runway will mean increased arrival and departure capacity, reduced delays and congestion, improved safety and operational resilience, and support airline network growth while protecting long-term regional competitiveness.

__Redesignations Complete__

In preparation for the Fourth Parallel Runway, the Airport redesignated (renumbered) its three existing North-South runways, working overnight on three separate dates in May, July and September 2026.![Redesignation 4](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/4gOIyiBzYzQMRdtKxfZULP/2e2b81591170eedf349a87430d15dbe8/Redesignation_4.png)

This work included repainting the 60-by-20-foot pavement markings and replacing signage:

- Runway 18R-38L became 1L-19R
- Runway 18C-36C became 1R-19L
- Runway 18L-36R reverted to 18-36

The phased redesignations enabled aviation charts to be updated and pilots and Air Traffic Control (ATC) to adjust to the changes.

“The success was the result of the Airport staff and contractor combining forces for the night work that required many crews and partnering to mitigate the risks, while changing out signs and re-striping the runway in such a short window of time,” said Ashton Watson, CLT Director of Engineering.

__Digital Twin Sensors Installed__

The new Fourth Parallel Runway will also have a Digital Twin, making it a “smart runway.”

Nearly 2,000 sensors are being installed at multiple levels beneath the concrete, primarily at the runway's north end before paving is complete.

The sensors will provide a virtual replica of the runway, allowing engineers to collect data and track aircraft movements as they taxi, take off and land. This will help the Airport make real-time maintenance, operational and safety decisions.

The project is a collaboration between CLT and the UNC Charlotte Aviation Innovation & Research (AIR) Institute. Engineering students will work with faculty to analyze and archive the data to develop models and tools to meet FAA and airport research needs nationwide.

__Paving In Progress__

About 53% of the new Fourth Parallel Runway is currently paved. Here are a few other fun facts:

- 1,198,344 man-hours worked
- 6,523,397 cubic yards of earthwork (about 435,000 truckloads).
- 159,023 feet of pipe installed (or more than 30 miles). This would circle around I-277 in Uptown nearly 7X!![Fourth Parallel Construction 08-2026 007](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/PBZFFKKsnIbCDdobLGYaV/bdc00470eeeb77c3b0c890bf79b98ea6/Fourth_Parallel_Construction_08-2026_007.jpg)

__Still To Come__

Construction is underway on Fire Station 47, which is being built to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for the Fourth Parallel Runway. Its location at the southern end of the airfield will optimize response times and enhance safety by eliminating the need for responders to cross active runways.

The South End Around Taxiway (SEAT) remains under construction and is set to open in September 2027. It will connect arriving and departing aircraft between the western runways and the terminal ramp and reduce aircraft crossings between runway 1R-19L and the new 1C-19C. (The North End Around Taxiway (NEAT) was completed in Jan. 2025.)

“Only a handful of U.S. airports have the luxury of end-around taxiways: Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Miami and Charlotte,” added Watson.

CLT also needs to complete asphalt shoulders, grooving and runway and taxiway lighting, finish pavement markings and complete grading and seeding between paved surfaces (so water can drain off paved surfaces and slowly infiltrate back into the soil), build navigational aid (NAVAID) sites, install equipment, and test and commission each facility.

__FAA Flight-Check__

Once paving is complete (likely March 2027) and pavement markings are finished (June 2027), the FAA will flight-check the new runway to ensure everything is properly calibrated and begin final commissioning before the runway officially opens in September 2027. ![Fourth Parallel Construction 08-2026 008](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/2ASLnyV8ckGukqCaNjumPV/f17a2b55c35ce279abacc24bf5afefeb/Fourth_Parallel_Construction_08-2026_008.jpg)

Charlotte (CLT) will then join Denver (DEN), Detroit (DTW), Los Angeles (LAX) and Orlando (MCO) with four parallel runways.

Atlanta (ATL) and Dallas (DFW) have five parallel runways, while Chicago O’Hare (ORD) has six parallel – and eight total runways! (That's currently the most in the United States.)

The Fourth Parallel Runway: One Year and Counting

CLT is shaking up its beverage lineup with a new drink that’s not only a social media darling but also a popular, non-alcoholic premium option. Enter the Dirty Soda!

In August, HMSHost by Avolta—the Airport’s official food and beverage concessionaire—selected Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen to launch the Dirty Soda concept, a customizable drink made with a soda base, creamer, flavor options and toppings. A specialized drink machine measures, blends and aerates the ingredients.

“We actually have three different kinds of dirty sodas, two that are kind of fruity and the other that is coconut and vanilla,” said Paloma Schrauder, HMSHost zone leader. “You can also set the sweetness level – they can adjust it according to your preference.”

Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen was strategically chosen because it is pre-security, on the lower level at Baggage Claim and offers exposure to multiple customer segments.

“The concept is particularly appealing to younger passengers while also reaching the thousands of Airport employees who pass through the area each day, creating strong opportunities for awareness, trial and repeat business,” said Matt Wissman, HMSHost Executive Director of Operations.

In addition to Dirty Soda, Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen also offers colorful craft refreshers, boba chillers and natural energy drinks. The beverages range in price from $4.39 to $7.99. The most popular flavor is the blue raspberry boba with strawberry popping pearls.![Dirty Soda -11](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/22TmnZbRYKCNoiOX50mLqc/dd01de9852c369790cc446e78cee73cf/Dirty_Soda_-10.jpg)

Look for the Dirty Soda and refresher concept to expand to 1897 Market in the Atrium in the next few months.

__Bison & Bourbon Pairing__

CLT’s trend setting also extends to other Airport restaurants, as our concessionaires consistently work to keep their menus fresh and relevant.

A juicy Bison Burger paired with Maker’s Mark 46 Bourbon was a huge hit this summer at CLT. Customers could order the “chef’s special” menu offering at Whiskey River, Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill, OMB and 1897 Market.![Connoisseur-s Collection 8-6-25 (8 of 26)](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/3Yzu3tNe1n0ZxX3zAdEmQI/064c40c24750bc35b76ae9000197948a/Connoisseur-s_Collection_8-6-25__8_of_26_.jpg)

HMSHost by Avolta Chef de Cuisine Andrew Aiton came up with the idea of pairing Connoisseur Collection Spirits with one of his personal favorites – bison.

“Bison is one of the fastest-growing premium protein categories, driven by consumer interest in leaner, healthier and more sustainable meat options,” said Aiton. “I remember having my first buffalo burger as a kid growing up in Colorado, and I fell in love with the rich flavor profile.”![Chef Andy 11-18-25 (1 of 6)](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/2x2b8Wv9za9vcDZUGL8ANV/59d27e73d441c7c2bdc5c08091f2d50a/Chef_Andy_11-18-25__1_of_6_.jpg)

Chef Aiton is now looking ahead to the upcoming holiday season and a new pairing (possibly sushi and tequila) for another elevated guest experience.

“We are really kind of dialing in to see what the traveler of the future is looking for and then having creative options for them available throughout many of the different platforms we offer,” added Aiton.

__Oktoberfest Returns to OMB__

And if you’re a traveler looking for a taste of a German Biergarten right in the Airport, check out Oktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB), located on Concourse D.

A special limited-time menu offering seasonal favorites will be available through October and includes an Oktoberfest Sausage Board, Traditional German Sauerbraten and a Kaiserschmarrn Funnel Cake.

We’ll raise a stein to that! ![OMB Biergarten 11-19-24 (8 of 17)](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/3HdRqT0x8IZiMerjMhV90k/aedac248f0f2e71dc24591090a8dd063/OMB_Biergarten_11-19-24__8_of_17_.jpg)

Dirty Soda and Unique Pairings Keep CLT on Trend

Each year on September 11, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) holds a remembrance ceremony in CLT’s terminal lobby.

This year’s special event was much larger than in previous years to mark the 25th anniversary and included an Honor Guard procession and bagpiper, brief remarks from TSA and CLT leaders, and a moment of silence for the nearly 3,000 victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

Experience it in our latest video:[9/11 Remembrance Ceremony](https://youtu.be/6d7AHeyr5vo "Remembrance Ceremony")

“As an airport, we remember the profound impact that September 11th had on our aviation community, our airline partners, our employees, our passengers and the millions of people whose lives were forever changed,” said Haley Gentry, CLT Chief Executive Officer. “Here in Charlotte, home to American Airlines' second-largest hub, we remember and extend our deepest sympathies to airline team members, passengers, and crews whose lives were forever changed that day.”

CLT Acting Federal Security Director Jose Bonilla issued a recommitment to the TSA mission:

“Forged on an anvil of cruel necessity and bloodshed in the assembly, TSA was built urgently in a time of war to preserve peace,” said Bonilla. “From all walks of life, we came forward to serve at an agency built on innovation, patriotism, and steady virtue. We are firm in our resolve not to yield to terror.”

The ceremony took place in front of a historic artifact housed in the terminal’s east ticketing lobby, near Checkpoint 3.

The display includes a small piece of a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center ruins, along with a plaque honoring the lives lost, including first responders.![TSA 911 beam 9-9-2020 (1 of 1)](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/5f4TGQOAisBlAo8Pj3X5Cd/2350aa77870abfddd2e105b1ce29c62c/TSA_911_beam_9-9-2020__1_of_1_.jpg)![Steel Beam memorial](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/5x82sr5McSZCLjkAAFeEi0/a3e71a782e33c36451993650476e2841/Steel_Beam_memorial.jpeg)

When the terrorist attacks occurred on September 11, 2001, CLT was the 21st busiest airport in the world and the busiest hub for US Airways.

By comparison, it is now the world's seventh-busiest airport for aircraft operations and the second-largest hub for American Airlines. (US Airways merged with American Airlines in 2013.)

__Travel Drops Off__

In the weeks immediately after 9/11, air travel dropped off dramatically. Many people feared flying or travel in general, and airlines began reducing their schedules.

CLT temporarily lost several routes, including those to Montreal, Paris, and Frankfurt, Germany. According to news reports published in The Charlotte Observer from late September 2001, US Airways reduced its capacity by 23%, resulting in layoffs of about 1,700 employees in Charlotte.

In October 2001, the first full month after 9/11, CLT’s total passenger traffic fell 19% from the same time period the previous year. It took two years for passenger traffic and aircraft operations at CLT to return to October 2000 levels.

__U.S. Airways Hit Hard__

Charlotte-based journalist and author Ted Reed has covered the aviation industry for 35 years. He currently covers the Airport for The Charlotte Ledger.![911 News articles and Airport Update 9-3-26 (13 of 25)](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/1QAPJtitbV6SUJV4ItbTI4/ab443e67ffc2c6bf4e890e8a6fe63260/911_News_articles_and_Airport_Update_9-3-26__13_of_25_.jpg)

“The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks came just two months after the US Airways/United deal (proposed merger) fell through. The attacks exacerbated the problems of an already weak airline economy, bringing a sudden sharp decline in traffic that led to huge numbers of losses and layoffs,” wrote Reed.

“The domestic industry’s revenues fell to $107 billion in 2002, down from $130 billion in 2000, while domestic airline employment fell to 450,000, down from 520,000 in 2000. US Airways was particularly hard hit because 80% of its departures were on the East Coast, where travel fell precipitously, and because Washington’s Reagan National Airport, where US Airways was the dominant carrier, was closed for three weeks.”

__Creation of the TSA__

One of the biggest changes after 9/11 was the creation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the first new federal agency in decades. Nearly 30,000 workers were hired to screen baggage and passengers at the nation's airports. ![DSCF2024Old TSA](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/43guWUoaX8xm0eyxeLG3rU/9e25d503ce0a47b6884944c5224d913f/DSCF2024Old_TSA.jpg)
*(Pictured: TSA officer at CLT, Early 2000's)*

Before that, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directed airlines to provide screening or contract for security screening.

According to the official TSA website timeline, President George W. Bush signed the Aviation and Transportation Act in November 2001.

It required federal officials to conduct screening, required 100% of checked baggage to be screened, expanded the Federal Air Marshal Service and ordered reinforced cockpit doors.

In 2002, CLT had five security checkpoints and several baggage screening locations. Today, the Airport has three larger checkpoints with 21 total lanes and two in-line baggage screening locations, staffed by about 600 local TSA employees (Fifteen TSA hires from the original 2002 class remain at CLT today!)

“Through 25 years of continued evolution, passengers in the nation’s transportation system are safer and more secure than ever before,” said CLT Acting Federal Security Director Jose Bonilla.

“The Transportation Security Administration works diligently to remain steps ahead of the persistent and evolving threat, while also working to significantly improve the overall passenger experience. We fully recognize that security and efficiency are opposite sides of the same coin, and I think the trend and progress will continue through the next 25 years.”

__Other Security Measures Added__

CLT and the FAA implemented several other security changes in the days, months, and years that followed the 9/11 attacks, including but not limited to:

- Only ticketed passengers, airline-badged personnel, and airport-badged personnel are allowed through security checkpoints.

- Curbside check-in service was discontinued (although SkyCaps were available for baggage assistance).

- Vehicles parked in CLT decks were subject to inspection. Vehicles that could not be visually inspected were asked to park in surface lots.

- Knives and box cutters are banned from carry-on luggage.

In August 2006, TSA put additional precautions in place. The agency began requiring passengers to remove shoes to screen for explosives, and banned liquids, gels and aerosols from carry-on luggage (later amended to allow for 3.4 ounces or less).

__Goodbye to Goodbyes__

With advanced technologies like facial comparison and other enhanced screening capabilities, some of these policies have since been adjusted or eliminated (for example, the “Shoes Off” policy ended in July 2025).

However, the days of greeting friends and family at the gate, waving goodbye to loved ones as they board, or coming into the terminal just to eat, shop, or hang out are gone. They have been replaced by a “new” normal that still exists today.

The Following Weeks, Months and Years

Twenty-five years ago, on a crisp, sunny Tuesday in September 2001, the world changed forever. What began as a normal morning for operations at CLT quickly turned into days of uncertainty and chaos in Charlotte and around the world.

Immediately after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shut down U.S. airspace and grounded all flights, leaving the Carolina blue skies eerily empty for three days and CLT’s ramp and terminal crowded with planes and stranded passengers.

__Aviation Employees Respond__

“This was 2001, so we were getting faxes from the FAA about our current status and ‘here is what we are expecting you to do,’” recalls CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine, who was then the Airport Planner.

Former CLT Airport Director Jerry Orr instructed Christine to go to the former U.S. Airways ramp control tower to help facilitate gate space for planes currently waiting to land and to find alternative parking for planes already at the gates.

“I was telling the ramp manager, ‘Okay, park this one here, park that one there,’ and we were literally parking them catty-corner on the taxiway,” said Christine. “We had planes everywhere.” The airport had only 69 gates in 2001, yet on 9/11 it had about twenty diversions and nearly twice as many aircraft to park, with about 125 planes eventually grounded here.![us rear 2](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/5fZ1cFX2SQW2rnSUv7lHuw/81b59d2e793d78af1c4019ef5c4aeee8/us_rear_2.JPG) (*Photo: Charlotte Douglas International Airport, September 11, 2001*)

The FAA also wanted the terminal cleared; however, connecting passengers had nowhere to go. Rental cars were gone within an hour and baggage was piled up. Uber didn't exist in 2001, so if a taxi wasn’t available, strangers began offering rides.

CLT Chief Maintenance Mechanic Charlie King was working that day and watched the events unfold on a TV mounted above a soda machine. “Our Airport looked like an aircraft parking lot,” said King. “I remember the silence at the Airport and how eerie it was to hear nothing but silence during the day.”

David Neal was an Airport Operations Officer at the time, escorting a fuel truck on the airfield. “We had to bus passengers and flight crews from the aircraft that had parked on the hardstand and the former Runway 5/23 to the main terminal,” he said. “Without planes taking off, you could hear birds chirping.”

David Roberts was a new IT employee, on his way to fix a receptionist’s computer in the terminal when he learned what happened. “There was uncertainty, confusion and fear, but there was also a strong sense of teamwork and responsibility. Everyone understood that we were part of something much bigger than our individual jobs…everyone came together.”

CLT Concessions Manager Jennifer Long was interning with the Airport’s Public Affairs division under the current CLT Chief Executive Officer, Haley Gentry, who was Public Affairs Manager in 2001. Long recalls being at the Information Booth in Ticketing when she first heard the news.![Jennifer Long 2001](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/26Eafc61LYJZ8jzCfRHT02/40fc9c4dcebf32b6eb293f0856fbc63d/Jennifer_Long_2001.JPG) *(Pictured: Jennifer Long, Current CLT Concessions Manager, 2001)*

“The terminal slowly became a ghost town, and we partnered with the Red Cross to bring in cots that eventually lined the Atrium with folks who were stranded,” recalled Long. “I also remember bringing in piano players and musicians to help soften the mood and environment.”![dr flag](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/7fAvAeP7w7v77iuEL4l7cI/f3c0044864a2654df13ab29cd1aa72a4/dr_flag.JPG)

Added Gentry, “I remember sending employees to the grocery store to buy diapers and baby formula. “We were in full response mode for several days. I remember once I finally made it home, just being mentally and physically exhausted.” ![DSC01977](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/4HKQqQfIsBuf1AvLKfpJG7/32b4c094fcd5e9e3438a0e77a414c0fe/DSC01977.JPG)
*(Pictured: Haley Gentry, Current CLT CEO, Sept. 11, 2001)*

“During that night, I honestly couldn’t concentrate on my work duties,” recalled Inventory & Warehouse Specialist John Morris, who was a building maintenance supervisor in charge of floor care in 2001. “I was scared, worried about the future state of the world, the economy and even my work status.”

__Flights Resume__

On Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, very limited domestic flights resumed as stranded aircraft were repositioned. By Friday, Sept. 14, major carriers started ramping up partial schedules.

In a letter to Aviation Department employees, then Director Orr attempted to recap that week’s tragic events: ![911 News articles and Airport Update 9-3-26 (1 of 25)](//images.ctfassets.net/jaw4bomip9l3/6au026yArHVt5NvTgY3P75/d8cc27320df15744ca232edceb3b9c08/911_News_articles_and_Airport_Update_9-3-26__1_of_25_.jpg)

“It is unclear what the coming months will bring. Some of you will be asked to do different things than those for which you were hired,” wrote Orr. “I have said it many times – ‘An organization is only as good as its people.’ We will make it through this difficult time because of our people and their ability to remain focused on this mission. I appreciate your hard work, cooperation and dedication.”

CLT Remembers 9/11

CLT’s popular USO (United Service Organizations) Center celebrated its 20th anniversary of serving our nation’s service members and their families passing through the Airport.

Well over one million visitors—an average of 500 a day—have walked through the doors of the USO Charlotte Center since it opened in the terminal, making it the busiest airport center in the world.

These photos from the CLT Archives show the welcome ceremony and the first visitors on Sept. 1, 2006.

Today, active-duty, reserve, or retired military members and their families can stop by to relax, grab a snack, watch TV or even game.

“It’s been fun to watch it grow,” said Megan Nisius, USO Area Operations Manager. “And looking back at how many people we have served and the good things that we’ve done, it’s been interesting...I love hearing from guests that this is the best USO!”

__Two Decade Celebration__

The CLT USO Center commemorated its two decades in the upper level of the Atrium on September 1, 2026 with a cake and a small celebration for its partners, volunteers and guests, including Mike Skinner of Williamsburg, Va. This was Skinner’s first visit to the Charlotte Center.

“I’m a veteran, and my son and daughter-in-law are veterans,” said Skinner. “There are about seven of us in the family, and we’ve all served and volunteered at the USO. It’s terrific. We’re very grateful it’s here.”

Later this year, the CLT USO Center will relocate to the lower level of the terminal and hopes to expand beyond its current 3,000 square feet as it enters its next decade.

In 2025, the CLT USO Center hosted 154,239 guests and served 17,981 others through programs and support outside the center.

CLT’s USO Center is open 365 days a year, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is staffed by about 300 volunteers. For more information, visit [CLT USO Center](https://www.cltairport.com/airport-info/services-and-amenities/uso-lounge/ "CLT USO Center") or USO.org. A Valid Military ID is required for admission.

Summer is winding down, and many students are back in school; however, the upcoming Labor Day holiday period will still bring a significant increase in passenger traffic at the Airport and in the skies.

Over 920,000 total passengers are projected to arrive and depart from CLT during the holiday period (Sept. 2-8). The share of local passengers at CLT continues to grow and now makes up approximately 36% of originating passengers.

More than 4,400 flights are scheduled to depart over the seven-day period.
The busiest travel days are predicted to be Thursday, Sept. 3; Friday, Sept. 4; and Monday, Sept. 7.

__Don’t Wing It: Prepare to Fly__

Here are some tips to help you have a smooth trip:

__Book Parking When You Book Your Ticket__

- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has plenty of parking options—nearly 25,000 spots—but about 16,000 are online booking-only, and spots fill up quickly during peak times and holidays.

- Visit [parkclt.com ](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/ "parkclt.com")to guarantee your preferred parking option and secure the best rates. For convenience, download the CLT Airport app to book parking and check shuttle and security wait times.

- Guests can also sign up for the [Royalty Program](https://www.cltairport.com/royalty-information/ "Royalty Program") to earn points and rewards.

__Roadway Changes__

- New Express Deck Exit Lane Open: A new exit lane across from Express Deck Self Park is now open, providing a more direct route from the parking deck to Josh Birmingham Parkway, I-85 and I-485, eliminating the need to exit at Harlee Avenue.

- Road Section Renamed: CLT has renamed the section of Little Rock Road between Interstate 85 and Wilkinson Blvd. to N. Josh Birmingham Parkway.

The change is part of the Airport's effort to create a more cohesive passenger experience by providing travelers with a single, consistently named roadway from the interstate exit to the Airport campus.

__Allow Extra Time__

- CLT suggests arriving at the terminal two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. During busy travel periods, you may need to allow extra time.

- Plan to reach the parking lot thirty minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal, as you might need to take a shuttle bus from your location.

- Consider alternate routes in case of traffic congestion. Use a navigation app to avoid trouble spots.

__New Concessions Arrive & Lounge Construction__

- __Grounded In CLT__ – This handmade burger concept opened in July with a variety of burgers and other menu items, such as sandwiches, appetizers, salads, sides, soft drinks and a full-service bar. Conveniently located in the A/B Connector, Grounded In CLT is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

- __Capital One Lounge__ – Travelers may notice construction has begun on the new Capital One Lounge located on the mezzanine level of Concourse A near Gates 21-29. The 14,000-square-foot lounge is expected to feature expansive airfield views, locally influenced menus and dedicated workspaces. No opening date has been announced.

__Shoulder Season Adventures Await__

Shoulder Season encompasses the time of year that experts refer to as the “lull” or “dips” between an area’s peak season and its low season. Fall is a perfect example, sandwiched between summer and the Thanksgiving holiday. You can generally expect fewer crowds, lower airfares, and pleasant, mild weather. Don’t wait. [Book your flight now. ](https://www.cltairport.com/flights/ "CLT Airport Flights")

__Stay Informed__

- Connect with your airline or monitor the CLT Airport app for flight updates. Check in before you leave home and save your boarding pass on your mobile phone.

- Please review the TSA website for information on what you are allowed to bring through security. You can also text “travel” to AskTSA (275-872) or message us through Facebook Messenger, X (formerly Twitter), or Apple Messenger.

- Check the [CLT Airport website](https://www.cltairport.com/ "CLT Airport") and app for shuttle bus wait times and security checkpoint wait times.

Labor Day Holiday Closes Out Summer

American Airlines CLT hub was recently awarded the Second Quarter 2026 Customer Cup, marking the CLT team’s first win since 2022.

The award recognizes American Airlines’ top-performing hubs and airports for excellence in safety, reliability, baggage handling and customer satisfaction. The accomplishment was celebrated earlier this month with a special event hosted by the American Airlines’ team featuring food, music and a fun photo booth as team members gathered at the gate on the tarmac to mark the big win.

"Running an airline is the largest team sport, and I couldn't think of a better group to work with,” said American Airlines Aircraft Maintenance Technician Kevin Kramer. “Being able to work with all these people to restore serviceability to the aircraft and ensure that they are airworthy is really a privilege. I see how hard the maintenance team works and I know across the other departments they work hard too. To see the results in better performance and a performance that rises above the other stations is very satisfying."

The American Airlines team has 16,500 CLT-based members. From April to June, the hub served around 5.8 million customers on nearly 60,000 flights. The team also handled more than 4 million bags and have continued to significantly improve customer satisfaction ratings year over year.

In fact, eight out of 10 passengers reported being highly satisfied with their overall experience at CLT in the Airport’s latest passenger survey conducted April to June 2026. Nine out of 10 passengers also gave high marks to service at the security checkpoint, terminal facilities and getting to the terminal.

Throughout the second quarter of this year, the CLT hub achieved overall record performances in delay handling, boarding satisfaction and overall bag experience. These successes are attributed to more than one factor.

“Moving thousands of bags through an airport is a complex operation that depends on precision, coordination, and trust,” said CLT’s Facilities Director Scott Kincaid. “The strong partnership between American Airlines and CLT teams, combined with the scale and sophistication of our baggage-handling infrastructure, allows us to keep bags moving efficiently from check-in to aircraft. It’s a great example of how people, technology, and infrastructure work seamlessly together to deliver a quality travel experience for every passenger.”

This year’s Runway 5K may have sold out in record time (approximately 15 minutes); however, one lucky winner secured a pair of race registrations after the window closed by entering the CLT Ticket Giveaway and being randomly selected.

Winner Olivia Selner and her husband have made the CLT Runway 5K an annual tradition. This will be their third year participating in the event.

“We've been running it together since before we were married, and it's a race that means a lot to us, especially because my family has strong ties to the airline industry,” said Selner. “Last year, my brother-in-law, who is a pilot for American Airlines, joined us, making the experience even more special. Being able to run on the runway, celebrate aviation, and create memories together is what keeps us coming back every year.”

Selner added that watching planes take off during the race and getting up close to the aircraft on display along the course make it a unique experience.

“And of course, it doesn’t hurt that it’s a nice, flat course!”

This year’s 19th annual CLT Runway 5K will take place on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 a.m.

__Sweepstakes Winner Collects Runway Sign__

Susan Hawes from Charlotte was the winner of the Runway ReSIGNed Sweepstakes and picked up her prize at the CLT Center earlier this month, along with her boyfriend and flight instructor David Gill.

Hawes is a student pilot and a member of the Carolinas Aviators Network.

“I want it to go in a special place, of course, so I am just trying to figure out where it is going to go,” said Hawes. “I’d love to have a hangar, but hopefully we will have a garage one day and that would be a perfect place. A little bit of Charlotte history for sure!”

The sign became available after the redesignation of the former Runway 18C-36C to Runway 1R-19L, a change made in preparation for the Airport’s future Fourth Parallel Runway.

A total of 7,186 people entered the sweepstakes for a chance to win this unique piece of CLT history.

The Airport celebrated Aviation Week (August 19-25) by highlighting CLT's exciting offerings for passengers, aviation enthusiasts and the region, as well as recent expansion milestones and ongoing projects.

One of the most significant changes underway at our airfield is CLT's preparation for the new Fourth Parallel Runway, scheduled to open in fall 2027.

We thought it would be a good time to look back at the oldest operational runway (18L-36R), which marked the beginning of CLT’s airfield. It’s a full-circle moment, nearly 90 years later.

__A CLT Original Comes Full Circle__

- 1935-36: Runway construction underway.
- 1938: Runways 18-36 & 04-22 (later 05-23) commissioned.
- 1980: Left and Right were added to the 18L-36R designation after a second North-South parallel runway was built.
- 2026: Runway 18L-36R was redesignated, reverting to the original 18-36.

On Sept. 3, crews worked overnight to remove and repaint 63 surface-painted signs. They will also remove 108 sign panels, install 35 vertical taxiway sign structures and update signage at six vehicle service road sign locations.

__Historical Timeline__

The historical significance of Runway 18L-36R at Charlotte Douglas International Airport can’t be overstated.

It’s where Air Force One lands when it flies into CLT, because it can taxi to the nearby Air National Guard ramp. It also serves as the primary runway for general aviation and private aircraft.

Our easternmost runway is the oldest and busiest on the airfield. In 2025, Runway 18L-36R recorded 221,059 aircraft operations, accounting for 40% of CLT’s takeoffs and landings.

Built between 1935 and 1936, Runway 18-36 was one of three original runways (including former Runways 05-23 and 11-29) constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) at what was then Charlotte Municipal Airport. It measured 3,000 feet long by 150 feet wide.

“The story I was told was that the WPA started bringing the materials in on the railroad and literally pulled the stuff off, measured off what at the time was an acceptable distance and started grading and paving the runway,” said Jack Christine, CLT Chief Infrastructure Officer. “18-36 was the first one they started with because it was closest to the railroad, working from north to south.”

- In 1937, Eastern Air Lines began serving Charlotte Municipal Airport with two daily flights.

- By 1940, Runway 18-36 had been lengthened to 5,000 feet to accommodate Eastern Air Lines' fleet of ever-improving aircraft.

- From 1941 to 46 (during World War II), the U.S. Department of War invested $6 million in the Airport to create Morris Field, which served as a U.S. Army Air Corps base. A portion of that funding was used to convert the runways from clay landing strips to paved runways. They also lengthened and widened the runways for use by military aircraft.

- In 1964, Runway 18-36 was lengthened again from 5,117 feet to 7,787 feet to accommodate commercial jet aircraft and was narrowed back to 150 feet wide. (By then, iconic airlines, such as Eastern Air Lines, Piedmont Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines were serving Douglas Municipal Airport.)

- In 1978, the western taxiways were added.

- In 1994, the predominantly asphalt runway (by then renamed 18L-36R) got a 1,000-foot concrete extension at its southern end.

__Its current length is 8,676 feet (150 feet wide)__.

When the new Fourth Parallel opens, CLT’s original 18-36 runway will close for up to a year to undergo heavy maintenance because weather, operations and heavy aircraft have taken a toll on the asphalt, which is more challenging to maintain.

Back In Time: CLT’s Oldest Runway

Spring and summer in the South offer amazing weather; however, these seasons can also bring thunderstorms and lightning that can impact Airport and airline operations.

Earlier this summer, the Airport’s Lightning Detection and Advisory Program (LDAP) began using revised detection and alerting parameters.

The goal is to reduce weather-related delays for passengers, enhance ramp safety and improve operational coordination.

__New Lightning Parameters__

After consulting other stakeholders and airports, CLT conducted a safety risk assessment and revised its LDAP parameters to better align with national industry best practices.

Using a data-driven approach, CLT has increased the lightning proximity radius by approximately 1.4 miles from the airfield perimeter (edge), rather than from the airfield's center point. This means the inner circle will encompass more of the Airport’s property. The revision also removes “In-cloud lightning” from that inner circle.

__Updated Detection Zones:__

- __Advisory__ – In-cloud and/or cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 25 miles (previously 20 miles) of CLT's perimeter. Serves as a pre-alert.

- __Warning__ (Amber) In-cloud and/or cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 10 miles of CLT’s perimeter will trigger an audible alert and an “amber” light.

- __Alarm__ (Red) Cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 3 miles of CLT’s perimeter will activate alarm and put the ramp on “red.” *(__In-cloud lightning removed.__)*

- __All Clear__ (Green) No cloud-to-ground lightning detected within 3 miles for 10 minutes, or no total lightning detected within 10 miles for 10 minutes of CLT.

__Balancing Safety & Efficiency__

At Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), the Airport Operations Center (AOC) continuously monitors lightning activity and verifies automatic web relay alerts from Vaisala, a global lightning-detection sensor network used by NASA and other organizations.

CLT’s role is to advise on lightning threats, not to mandate stoppages. Individual airlines and stakeholders establish their own internal response policies.

The LDAP revisions were made to balance operational efficiency with the safety of Airport workers, airline employees and passengers.

“I’m sure everyone can understand the significant impact on the National Airspace System when an airport the size of Charlotte closes the ramp and is unable to accept or move traffic, whether that’s departing or arriving flights,” said Erick Hall, Airport Operations Center Manager. “So, we tried to reassess and balance that a little more.”

The process began after CLT’s largest carrier, American Airlines, provided data showing that 75-80% of ramp closures (2024-2025) were caused by in-cloud lightning (or pulses), not by cloud-to-ground lightning.

“There were instances when the ramp was closed for a period of time, and there was no cloud-to-ground lightning strike detected during the entire storm; everything was up at altitude,” added Hall.

Extended ramp closures beyond 30 minutes can trigger a ripple effect of flight delays, crew time-outs, and long “on-boards,” leaving passengers stuck on planes, potentially violating Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines and causing irregular operations for the rest of the day.

Hall warns that no matter the ramp's color, the advisory program is just that – advisory, not preventive. However, he says the new lightning parameters should increase awareness without causing unnecessary delays.

__Overlook “Light Stack” Coming__

A light stack (red-amber-green), like those used on the Airport ramp, will eventually be installed at the Airport Overlook as part of a lighting upgrade project to improve safety and keep visitors informed about ramp conditions and lightning detection.

Updated Lightning Program Could Mean Fewer Delays

July’s Noise Advisory Forum (NAF) brought together more than 30 community members interested in learning more about aircraft noise and long-term Airport planning and development. The July 8 meeting at the CLT Center was the third of four meetings this year.

Neighborhoods represented at the recent NAF included Berewick, Belmont, Southpark, Mountain Island Lake, Little Rock Crossing, Cooley Hills and the River District, as well as cities outside the Charlotte area, such as Fort Mill, S.C. and Lake Wylie, S.C.

The NAF was established last year to foster open and constructive dialogue between the City of Charlotte Aviation Department and impacted communities.

Mooresville resident and former Airport Community Roundtable (ACR) Board Member Kevin Vesely said his ongoing concern is that arriving aircraft descend too quickly and remain at low altitudes longer than necessary before landing.

“When you watch the planes land on FlightAware.com, you can clearly see they’re coming in at 10,000 feet, and then 3,900 feet, and they continue for 20 or 30 miles,” said Vesely. “When they come down like this, they go across all our neighborhoods and make noise.”

__NEPA & Possible Flight Path Changes__

Attendees at the July meeting also learned more about the Airport’s Master Plan 2050 and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which outlines how flight path changes will be evaluated with the addition of CLT’s new Fourth Parallel Runway.

The new 10,000-foot runway (1C-19C) will be used primarily for departures and will enhance overall airfield operational efficiency.

“We want to first avoid environmental impacts,” said Michael Pilarski, CLT Airport Planning Program Manager. “If we can’t avoid them outright, we want to minimize those impacts, and if that is still difficult, we will mitigate to the best of our abilities. And as the NEPA process unfolds, public input is a major part, so we want to hear from you. Having community interest is critical and very important to us.”

Possible operational changes could include adopting divergent headings—which would spread post-takeoff flight paths over a wider area—and eliminating the current two-mile turning restriction, allowing departing aircraft to turn sooner.

Public meetings are expected later this year. Community members are encouraged to watch for future announcements with details on meeting dates, locations and opportunities to participate.

The Airport will consider those comments and make recommendations based on the environmental assessment of the new runway, which is underway. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will then review those recommendations and make its own.

The Fourth Parallel Runway is scheduled to be commissioned in late September 2027.

__Improved Noise Complaint Form & Mobile Webform__

CLT has unveiled an improved [noise complaint form](https://www.planenoise.com/cltairportnoise/ "Noise Complaint Form") for those who need it. July NAF attendees also received the first preview of CLT’s new mobile webform – designed to make submitting and tracking noise concerns easier and more accessible.

CLT is one of the busiest airports in the world for aircraft operations, with more than 1,600 daily arrivals and departures to more than 190 destinations. The Airport plays a vital role in the Carolinas’ economy, generating an estimated $40 billion in economic impact and supporting 185,000 jobs annually.

Aircraft noise is a reality of any busy airport, and CLT recognizes that it can impact nearby communities, which is why CLT remains dedicated to transparent communication with the public.

__Upcoming Forum Dates & Topics__

October’s NAF will feature the next part of our ongoing educational series - how community members shaped the flight path changes being considered by the FAA.

All Noise Advisory Forums are held in person from 6-8 p.m. at the CLT Center (5601 Wilkinson Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28208). Snacks and soft drinks will be provided.

__UPDATE 8/1__: The 2026 CLT Runway 5K is officially sold out! If you missed out, we are giving away two race registrations to one lucky winner. One winner will be randomly selected at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 7 and notified via email. Enter the [Ticket Giveaway](http://bit.ly/CLTRunway5K_TicketGiveaway "5K Ticket Giveaway") here.

Race Day is Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 am.

“Community members began reaching out about registration as early as December 2025,” said Sterling Patterson, CLT Community Engagement Coordinator. “We love how popular this event has become among area residents and beyond.”

Last year, the race sold out in under three hours. This year, it sold out in approximately 15 minutes, showing the growing popularity and size of the CLT Runway 5K.

“We had such interest from our partners that we had to close our request for sponsors,” added Patterson. “In response, we are delighted to offer several new, exclusive packages, allowing even more organizations to join us at the Runway 5K.”

In 2007, the event had only 500 participants. In 2025, ten of the 1,600 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers who crossed the finish line traveled more than 1,000 miles, including four from abroad. Next year, the event will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The October 18, 2025, race was a record-breaking event, raising $90,930. Since 2019, CLT has raised over $317,000 for Central Piedmont Opportunity Scholarships – more than doubling the original goal.

The Runway 5K has been so successful that CLT announced an endowed scholarship at Central Piedmont earlier this year, the “Charlotte Douglas International Airport Scholarship Fund.” The endowed scholarship will support students pursuing aviation-related careers and ensure CLT’s charitable impact at Central Piedmont continues.

“The Runway 5K is one of our flagship events and demonstrates how we build connections between the Airport and our surrounding neighbors. It is always a favorite among our entire Community Engagement team," according to Patterson.

*Update*: As of October 2026, 44 students from Mecklenburg County have received CLT Airport Opportunity Scholarships.

Sold Out: Runway 5K Sets New Record

For the fourth consecutive year, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has been named North America’s most financially efficient airport among those serving more than 40 million passengers.

The prestigious industry award, presented by the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), is based on 2024 financial year data. The ATRS is a global academic and industry organization that evaluates airports worldwide, focusing on several aspects of airport operations, including productivity and efficiency, cost competitiveness, financial performance and airport charges.

“This recognition is a validation of our effort to support growth and opportunity for the residents of the Charlotte region!” said Michael Hill, CLT Chief Financial Officer. “When we operate efficiently, we keep airline costs competitive, which helps sustain and grow air service. That connectivity is a major driver of business activity, tourism and job creation across the region. It also means we can reinvest in infrastructure, which enables growth and supports existing and new jobs for our citizens.”

__CLT’s Economic Impact__

CLT is owned and operated by the City of Charlotte. It has an annual economic impact of $40 billion in the Carolinas region, which is about 5% of the state of North Carolina's entire domestic product.

Infrastructure projects, such as the recently completed Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) and the Fourth Parallel Runway project (on schedule to open in fall 2027), are funded through a combination of federal grants, passenger facility charges and airport revenue bonds, with no local tax dollars.

CLT is currently the seventh-busiest airport in the world for aircraft operations (arrivals and departures) and the second-largest hub for American Airlines. In 2025, the Airport handled 53.6 million passengers, with almost 35% of those passengers originating in Charlotte.

Hill explained that airlines base decisions on the strength of the local market, cost, reliability and long-term financial predictability.

A ranking like this reinforces CLT’s financial model and can be a game changer for bringing new and exciting destinations, and even new carriers, into the market.

“That matters because lower operating costs create value for the airlines and an environment which encourages growth and expansion, not only for our hubbing carrier (American Airlines) but for all airlines serving the Airport,” added Hill.

“An efficient cost structure also reduces barriers to entry for new airlines to initiate service to CLT, as evidenced by the introduction of new service by Etihad with non-stop service to Abu Dhabi earlier this spring. Financial efficiency also lets the airlines know they’re partnering with an airport that manages growth responsibly, which reduces risk for long-term route planning.”

__Conveniently Connecting CLT to the World__

The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance cites regional connectivity as the city’s greatest asset.

Charlotte is ideally positioned midway between New York City and Miami, and CLT offers more than 194 nonstop destinations worldwide, so you can go almost anywhere without the inconvenience of a layover.

“The level of air service at CLT is far beyond what can be supported by the local community alone,” said CLT’s Hill. “CLT’s financial efficiency is largely credited for the level of commercial aircraft operations and the number of destinations served with non-stop flights. This level of service is a key contributor to the region’s growth and provides tremendous convenience to our citizens who would otherwise need to connect through other airport facilities.”
