[TSA PreCheck Touchless ID ](https://www.tsa.gov/touchless-id "Touchless ID")is now available at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in time for winter holiday travel. American Airlines is partnering with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for Touchless ID, and AAdvantage® members are eligible to opt in.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID enhances security screening by using facial comparison technology to verify identity more quickly and efficiently. Enrolled travelers can move through the dedicated lane at CLT’s Checkpoint 2 with ease, enjoying a smoother, more convenient airport experience. 

“We look forward to making your travel experience more seamless and more enjoyable,” said Jose Bonilla, TSA Deputy Federal Security Director. 

American Airlines Advantage members must opt in to TSA PreCheck Touchless ID via their AAdvantage® profile at [aa.com ](https://www.aa.com/homePage.do "aa.com")or on the mobile app, and upload the required information, including a valid passport. They will need to renew annually. 

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is available at 15 select airports across five airlines. Currently, only American Airlines offers it at CLT.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Arrives at CLT

Around 4,000 troops heading home for the holidays passed through CLT in mid-December as part of the annual Operation Victory Block Exodus 2025. 

The recruits arrived via 80 buses from Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC, the U.S. Army’s main Basic Combat Training center. 

CLT collaborated with the U.S. Army, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the USO Center—the busiest among over 250 USO Centers worldwide—along with many volunteers and sponsors, including HMSHost by Avolta and Paradies Lagardère, to facilitate troop movement over three days from December 16-18, 2025. 

The Airport’s Piedmont Room was decorated and served as a gathering area for recruits to “run the line” and pick up food, drinks, snacks, and other treats before catching flights to reunite with family and friends. Santa and Mrs. Claus even made a guest appearance!

“I believe it is meaningful to all of us in our way of showing gratitude for these young Service Members returning home on a break from boot camp,” said USO Center Operations Specialist Peter Amendola. “These fine young men and women are our future and have committed themselves to serve our country. The least we can do is give them a warm smile, a welcoming greeting and a snack for their return trip home.”

Airline partners included American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, Frontier, and United Airlines.

Troops Home For The Holidays 

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is decked out for the holiday season, and our “fit check” is all things festive! 

The terminal lobby and baggage claim are adorned with beautiful new holiday baubles and ornaments in blue, silver, and gold. CLT’s beloved reindeer brothers, Wilbur and Orville, look handsome as ever in the Atrium, while charming holiday doves greet everyone high above the entrance to Concourse E. 

More than 2.7 million passengers are expected to arrive and depart at CLT between December 16, 2025, and January 4, 2026. This is a 13.4% decrease compared to 2024. The busiest total-traffic days are forecast to be Friday, Dec. 26, Saturday, Dec. 27, and Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025. 

 While it may be “the most wonderful time of the year,” it can also be one of the most stressful times to fly.  

__Don't Wing It, Prepare to Fly__

Here are some tips to help you have a smooth trip: 

__Book Parking When You Book Your Ticket__

- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has plenty of parking options—nearly 25,000 spots—but about 17,000 are *online booking-only*, and spots fill up quickly during peak times and holidays. 

- Visit [parkclt.com](https://www.cltairport.com/parking/ "Airport Parking") to guarantee your preferred parking option and secure the best rates. For convenience, download the CLT Airport app to book parking and check shuttle and security wait times.  

- Guests can also sign up for the [Royalty Program](https://www.cltairport.com/royalty-information/ "CLT Royalty Program") to earn points and rewards.  

__Allow Extra Time__

- CLT suggests arriving at the terminal two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. During busy travel periods, you may need to allow extra time. 

- Plan to reach the parking lot 30 minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal, as you might need to take a shuttle bus from your location. 

- Consider alternate routes in case of traffic congestion. Use a navigation app to avoid trouble spots.

Holiday Travel Sparkles at CLT

What a historic year 2025 was for the Airport. After five years of construction, the Terminal Lobby Expansion was completed this fall, a crowning achievement for CLT. 

But within the past 12 months, there were also many other major highlights that landed top spots in the Airport’s history books.

Here’s a look back at 10 moments that defined CLT’s 2025.

The Airport marked a royal achievement on Sept. 17 – the completion of the $608 million Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE). The TLE adds 175,000 square feet of new space, plus 191,000 renovated square feet to the front of the terminal. Features include the Queen Charlotte statue as the centerpiece, two skybridges and underground walkways, pre-security concessions, 11 art pieces, a 146,000 square-foot steel and glass canopy, three checkpoints with 21 lanes, new escalators/elevators and modern ticket counters.  

2.	[__CLT Ranks Sixth Busiest Airport Worldwide__](https://www.cltairport.com/news/press-releases/item/clt-climbs-to-sixth-busiest-airport-in-the-world-in-aci-preliminary-rankings/ "CLT Ranks Sixth Busiest Airport")
Charlotte Douglas International Airport ranks the sixth busiest airport worldwide for aircraft operations (landings and departures), according to Airports Council International’s (ACI) 2024 rankings. That’s up one spot from 2023. For passenger traffic, CLT takes the seventh spot in North America and is 23rd worldwide. 

3.	[__Etihad Airways Announces CLT-Abu Dhabi Route__](https://www.cltairport.com/news/press-releases/item/etihad-airways-begins-clt-abu-dhabi-service-in-may-2026/ "Etihad Announces Abu Dhabi Route")
Etihad Airways - the official airline of the United Arab Emirates - unveiled plans on May 16 to operate four weekly nonstop flights from CLT to Abu Dhabi (AUH) (now starting in March 2026) using its flagship Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This will be CLT’s longest route at 15 hours, its first nonstop service to Asia and its first scheduled 787 service.

American Airlines celebrated its inaugural flight and launch of nonstop service from CLT to Athens International Airport in Greece on June 5. The event included Greek cuisine, performances of traditional Greek dances and a blessing of the flight by Greek Orthodox priests.

5.	[__Modern Aviation Arrives as New FBO__](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/general-aviation-at-clt-gets-modern-ized/ "Modern Aviation Arrives as New FBO")
On July 1, Modern Aviation became CLT’s fixed-base operator (FBO). The company now provides general aviation services, such as fueling, parking, ground handling, maintenance and passenger amenities for non-commercial aircraft, including corporate jets and privately owned planes. They also oversee 220,000 square feet of hangar space and 100,000 square feet of office space.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) contributed nearly $40 billion to the Carolinas in 2023 and continues to be a powerful economic engine, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Aviation and North Carolina State University. CLT also directly impacted North Carolina's economy with $36.6 billion (a 14.4% increase from 2021), generated $2.1 billion in state and local tax revenue, supported 167,045 jobs and created $15.2 billion in personal income. That amounts to 5% of the state’s GDP or gross domestic product.

CLT held its Triennial Disaster Exercise on Oct. 4 to practice and test emergency response skills. The scenario involved the simulated aftermath of an aircraft emergency and mass casualties. More than 400 emergency personnel, Aviation Operations staff, volunteer victims, evaluators and observers converged on Taxiway Sierra to take part. 

8.	__[Josh King makes top 8 of American Idol](https://www.cltairport.com/news/stories/item/from-idol-stage-to-clt-keys-finalist-returns-to-play/ "Josh King Makes Top 8 on American Idol") + [New Baby Grand Lands in Atrium](https://www.facebook.com/reel/1907462293429345 "New Piano in Atrium")__
CLT Airport volunteer pianist and singer Josh King finished in the Top 8 on “American Idol” before his journey came to an end on the May 5 episode. This was a massive accomplishment for King, age 25, who has played piano and entertained travelers in the Airport Atrium since 2018.

The Airport received a new Yamaha Baby Grand Piano in the Atrium on May 27 due to the wear and tear on the previous Yamaha piano that had been a fixture at CLT since Aug. 4, 2008. Fun fact: The Airport’s first piano was installed in 1995. CLT’s new piano features auto play, which allows songs to be played without a musician tickling the ivory keys.

The legendary rocker, Grammy Award winner and entrepreneur Sammy Hagar dropped by CLT June 24 to celebrate the opening of his newest Sammy Hagar's Beach Bar & Grill. Located on Concourse D, it serves a variety of food and beverage options daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Other concessions that opened in 2025 include: The Waterman Fish Bar(Concourse C), Charlotte (Atrium and Baggage Claim), Dunkin’ (Ticketing), Catawba Trade (Atrium).

The Fourth Parallel Runway hit a major milestone in November when crews placed the first lane of concrete on the actual footprint of the 10,000-foot runway.

CLT’s Top 10 Moments of 2025 

For the fifth year in a row, the CLT Aviation Department’s 2025 Angel Tree Giving Campaign is making holiday wishes come true for some area students.

This year, 33 students made their lists and checked them twice. The children have chosen various gifts they hope to find under the tree on Christmas morning. Their holiday lists included dolls, animal-themed books, music-playing devices, robes, jogging pants, monster trucks and purses. 

Recipients this year are from Ashley Park Elementary and CMS Homebound/Hospital Scholars, who are unable to attend school in a traditional setting due to their medical needs.

“With my son having a brain aneurysm in February, I was forced to leave my job, and the Angel Tree Program has helped relieve this financial burden,” said parent Shaniqua B. “It warms my heart to know that there are programs/people who care about their community and want to support families in need.”

“The Angel Tree program means support, hope and reassurance during a season that can feel heavy,” added parent Stephanie S. “Knowing my children were chosen reminds me that we’re not alone and that kindness still exists.”

Aviation staff members and teams signed up to sponsor students and donated dozens of wrapped gifts for delivery.

“By providing gifts and essentials to children and families in need, we help ensure that everyone can experience the joy of the holiday season,” said Jennifer Bartlett, CLT Aviation Spirit Committee Co-Lead on behalf of the group. “This is the most meaningful thing we do, as it reflects the true spirit of service, compassion and generosity that defines our committee.”

Angel Tree Delivers Wishes

As we close out the year, CLT would like to take a moment to thank our airline partners, federal partners, concessionaires, Aviation Department employees and many others. Each of you contributes to the success of our airport, whether we are hitting record-breaking passenger numbers or feeling the impacts of a 43-day federal government shutdown.

We sincerely thank you for supporting your coworkers, federal employees, and our customers and passengers. Your contributions haven't gone unnoticed. 

By coming together during the federal shutdown, CLT organized and led a comprehensive food drive and supported various initiatives. Your time and donations were crucial to the success of these efforts, including but not limited to:

- Food & Essentials Drive served over 600 federal employees with necessities, including canned and boxed food, snacks, household essentials, personal care and baby supplies, three days a week during two-hour blocks. 

- Women in Aviation and the CLT Spirit Committee coordinated food bank volunteers and received donations.

- 150 Aviation Department employees volunteered to assist TSA operations at security checkpoints, helping direct passengers and communicate TSA guidance to ensure continued efficiency.

- Crisis Assistance Ministry on-site partnership (Nov. 5-21) supported federal employees by providing intake for 61 individuals and processing applications to connect them with vital resources and services.

- American Airlines provided meals and gasoline for federal employees in partnership with Menzies, ABM and Prospect. 

- DaVinci Jets employees brought food and supplies to the office, and one of its Gulfstream 280 pilots volunteered to collect and deliver them, filling the entire bed of his pickup truck. In addition, DaVinci’s Director of Operations personally delivered donuts to the air traffic control tower.

- HMSHost donated one thousand $10 dining vouchers, 24 pizzas, $800 worth of baby essentials and five pallets of various items, including snacks and paper products, as well as additional discounts at all HMSHost locations.

- Our DBE partners contributed over 400 meals at Burger King, meals to more than 1,700 workers at Bojangles and Red Mango, $1,800 in canned goods, and a $500 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Lifting each other during challenges helps us grow stronger together. CLT exemplified this in October-November 2025.

CLT, Partners Offer Shutdown Assistance

The ancient Chinese tile game of Mahjong requires skill, strategy and luck. You could say it was a stroke of good luck or maybe even destiny that saved the life of the CLT Canine Crew’s newest therapy dog with the same name. 

Two-and-a-half-year-old “Mahjong” is an Australian Shepherd. His previous owner surrendered him to a rural veterinary clinic in the Missouri Ozarks because he was deaf. The dog probably would have been euthanized if it hadn’t been for a compassionate vet and her staff, who refused to put him down and kept him until a foster home became available. 

__Facebook Meet Cute__ 

Charlotte-area physician Sheley Revis discovered him on Facebook through the [Speak! Rescue and Sanctuary](https://www.speakrescue.com/ "Speak! Rescue and Sanctuary"), and “was instantly smitten!” Dr. Revis reached out to the foster mom and explained that she was seeking another deaf dog with a temperament suitable for therapy work, following the death of her previous dog, McGrady, also a deaf “Aussie” and a former Canine Crew member.  

(According to the American Kennel Club, breeding certain types of “merles” or “fancy patterned” dogs can result in recessive genes and potential deafness or blindness in about 25% of cases.) 

After a few video chats, Dr. Revis committed to adopting Mahjong and met with a volunteer in Tennessee to pick him up. Revis doesn’t play the game but has been studying Chinese for the past 4-5 years, which is how she chose his name. 

__Hand Signal Training__ 

Dr. Revis is a busy doctor at Novant Health University City Internal Medicine. In her free time, she trained Mahjong—and McGrady before him—using hand signals, similar to how hearing dogs are trained with a clicker and a treat. But instead of using a clicker to mark the desired behavior, she used a “thumbs up.” 

“The absence of sound makes them MORE focused on you as there are no noise distractions,” said Revis. “And if he is outside at night and I want him to come in, I use a flashlight.” 

Mahjong is now a proud member of the CLT Canine Crew, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in May 2025, and currently has 25 teams of dogs and handlers. Volunteers work two, two-hour shifts per month and interact with an average of 150 to 200 guests per shift, providing hugs, smiles and a soothing distraction for travelers and others. 

“I don’t love flying, so to have a little stress reliever just puts a smile on your face for a couple of minutes; it is very sweet,” said Newark-bound passenger Brad Deiter, who stopped to pet Mahjong. 

Flyer Mandy Bologna from Connecticut has fostered dogs with special needs. “And one of the things that really kills me is all of these dogs, no matter how confused and hurt they were, were the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met,” said Bologna. 

”CLT Canine Crew was and is the MOST fun volunteer activity I have ever done…I love meeting people from all over the world,” said Dr. Revis. “I feel that both dogs’ deafness has been a major asset given the hubbub at the Airport. I also like the idea of having people meet a friendly, well-adjusted, gorgeous dog, only to learn, ‘Oh yeah, he’s deaf.’ I can’t think of a better advertisement for the capabilities of special needs pets.”

A Winning Move – Deaf “Mahjong” Joins CLT Canine Crew 

Blue, silver and gold ornaments, bauble garland and gift boxes have arrived in the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE), helping to spread holiday cheer. 

The Airport’s new holiday décor greets passengers above the main doorways in Ticketing, on the luggage carousels in Baggage Claim and wrapped around wayfinding signage and Flight Information Display Systems throughout the TLE. 

The festive decorations join CLT’s reindeer (Wilbur and Orville) who made their debut in 2019 and 2020 in the Atrium and the Airport’s holiday doves that were introduced in 2023 at the entrance of Concourse E.

__Installation Process__

CLT’s holiday decorations were installed Monday, Nov. 17 - Thursday, Nov. 20. The Airport’s facilities team and vendors worked each night from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. “There are coordination meetings that begin in October so on installation night - in that five-hour window - everyone knows what to expect and everyone knows their role in finishing the display within that timeframe,” said Customer Engagement Manager Lauri Golden. 

When selecting the new décor, Golden and her team looked for decorations that would not impede passenger traffic, tie in nicely with the TLE, complement CLT’s existing holiday pieces and make its own mark. 

“We strive for CLT to be a different airport, to have its own identity,” Golden said. “We think that CLT is a signature airport, and this is one of the many ways that we try to achieve that by leaving a positive impression.” 

__Festival of Trees__

Passengers can delight in 23 artfully decorated trees and make a donation to help support local, underserved families. Each tree features a QR code indicating which foundation it benefits.

The holiday event also serves as a friendly competition among various Airport departments, partners and contractors that worked to decorate the trees. Passengers can vote for their 
favorite, with the winner receiving a trophy. 

“We’ve seen lots of smiling faces and compliments on how beautiful the trees look,” said Project Organizer Veronica Brannigan. “People love taking photos in front of the trees and our popular snow globe. The joy and excitement make the effort worthwhile!”

The “Festival of Trees” was created by HMSHost by Avolta, the Airport’s food and beverage concessionaire, and will be on display at CLT through Dec. 26, 2025.

CLT Delivers Holiday Cheer

The Thanksgiving travel season is underway with approximately 1.9 million passengers arriving and departing Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) between Thursday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Dec. 2. This represents a roughly 10% decrease compared to 2024. 

The terminal, however, will still be crowded. The busiest travel days are expected to be Saturday, Sunday, and Monday after Thanksgiving. Sunday, Nov. 30, will see the highest traffic, with an estimated 178,000 passengers passing through the Airport that day.

“The recent federal shutdown created challenges across the aviation system, but we do not expect significant impacts at CLT this holiday week,” said CLT Chief Business and Innovation Officer Ted Kaplan. “Our focus is on giving every traveler a safe and smooth trip.”

__Arrive Early__

Domestic passengers should be in the terminal at least two hours before departure, and international passengers at least three hours prior. Also, it’s recommended to check with your airline before arriving at the Airport for any possible schedule changes. 

__Terminal Lobby Transformation Complete__

This will be the first major holiday post-construction as the CLT Terminal Lobby Expansion is now complete.

The five-year project expanded the lobby area by 175,000 square feet and renovated another 191,000 square feet. Significant features include expanded security checkpoints with additional lanes, a 149,000-square-foot glass canopy, two pedestrian skybridges, state-of-the-art automated exit lanes, and a 16-lane curb front – all designed to improve passenger flow and safety.

In addition, new pre-security concessions have been introduced for shopping and dining, including Dunkin' (Ticketing), Charlotte News & Gifts and Queen Charlotte’s Kitchen (both in Baggage Claim).

__Concourse Renovations__

If flying out on Concourses D and E, you’ll notice renovations are underway for new flooring, seating, lighting and restrooms. Concourse D’s upfit will be complete next year, and Concourse E’s makeover will wrap up in 2027.

Travelers are strongly encouraged to book parking when purchasing their ticket, as demand is high during peak times.

Thanksgiving Travel Gets Its Gobble Back

Travelers passing through Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)  are probably familiar with the Canine Crew, the popular volunteer therapy dogs and owners stationed throughout the terminal and concourses. However, you may have also seen some other dogs at the Airport that you can’t touch – not because they aren’t friendly, but because they are hard at work, trained for a single purpose.

Ten K-9s are assigned to CLT — two Narcotic Detection Canines owned by the City of Charlotte and eight Explosive Detection Canines funded and owned by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officers, including three full-time detectives, serve as the handlers. The dogs wear outer vests marked “do not pet” and are accompanied by officers in tactical gear. 

__A Nose for Safety__ 

The K-9s patrol all CLT Airport property, including baggage, air freight areas and local mail. The Narcotics Detection Canines search for contraband substances and cash suspected of being linked to illegal activity. (International travelers must declare any currency over $10,000.)

However, TSA does not screen for cash or narcotics. TSA-trained canines only detect explosives. If Transportation Security Officers find a suspected large sum of cash or drugs, they must report the discovery to local law enforcement for further investigation.

“It’s a different side of crime that people probably don’t see every day because it’s out of sight, out of mind,” according to CMPD Captain Matthew Horner. “The reason that fentanyl or heroin or methamphetamines are getting into communities is through transit, and the only way we can attack the drug trade from that angle, unfortunately, is by trying to get those seizures.”

The Narcotics Interdiction Team is part of a Federal Task Force that works closely with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). 

Service calls requiring explosives detection typically involve unattended bags. “The TSA’s explosive detection K-9s are a great tool for us. They can come up and check a bag, know it’s safe for the officers to handle, and then get that lost item back to the owner,” added Horner.

__Mastery Through Practice__

The dogs and handlers must complete extensive training before being considered ready for Airport duty. While CMPD trains its K-9s locally at an off-site facility, the explosive detection canines and handlers train at the TSA Canine Training Center in San Antonio, TX. The dogs work with their handlers across a wide range of agencies in the transportation system, including here at CLT.  *(K-9s Pictured: Inox & Alvin)*

“These adorable working dogs have a keen sense of smell and are particularly trained to use their skill in detecting explosive compounds and helping their handlers ensure the safety and security of the transportation system,” said Greg Hawko, TSA Federal Security Director for CLT. “We test the canines regularly to ensure they maintain their excitement in detecting explosives, so we are very confident in their abilities.”

While TSA protects sensitive security information and does not provide statistics on efficiency or details about how the canines are deployed, “What I can say is they are very good at their jobs, and it should be comforting for travelers to know we have them and depend on them regularly,” added Hawko.

The K-9s even have their own Cutest Canine Contest featuring dogs nominated from Airports around the country, and a yearly calendar (available on the [TSA website](https://www.tsa.gov/sites/default/files/tsa_canine_calendar_2025.pdf "Canine Calendar")).

So, the next time you notice one of these hard-working pooches, remember they’re more than just watchful eyes—they are a critical part of our security team, working diligently to protect passengers, customers and Airport employees while serving as a strong, visible deterrent.

Communicating in various languages at CLT has gotten easier with the roll out of “I speak” buttons. 

The yellow buttons with black lettering are worn by multi-lingual Aviation Department and CLT partner employees. "They are wearing the buttons for passengers to easily pinpoint someone who can more effectively communicate with them in the language of their choice,” Accessibility & Equity Specialist Alyssa Evans said.

The Airport’s Accessibility & Equity team annually conducts questionnaires to gauge CLT partners and staff about any resources they may be using and recommendations to help address any needs at the Airport. The most recent questionnaire showed a gap in communication with customers who spoke different languages. “We have many people at CLT who speak different languages, but a lot of customers were using their family members and friends to translate for them,” Evans said.

The “I speak” buttons, which were first distributed in July, come in 29 different languages and read ‘I speak’ in whichever language the employee wearing them is fluent in. Those who speak multiple languages can be seen wearing multiple buttons. 

The languages currently included on the buttons are: Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Chuukese, Farsi, Filipino, French, German, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hausa, Hindi, Ilocano, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Malayalam, Mandarin, Pashto, Brazilian Portuguese, Portugal Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Tigrinya and Vietnamese.

“We want to improve the customer experience among all of our customers. I hope passengers will spot the buttons and see we are an inclusive airport that strives to make sure we can help them no matter what language they may speak,” ADA & Title VI Coordinator Ivy Williams said. Currently, 949 buttons have been distributed among different Aviation Department groups and partners. “Right now, we’re just trying to get the word out,” Williams added.

Parking & Ground Transportation Sr. Data Analyst Helen Pan proudly wears her button that says she speaks Mandarin. “I was born and raised in China, and Mandarin is my native language,” Pan said. “I saw the buttons as an opportunity to use my language to help passengers." 

She received her button this summer and has noticed the difference it has made in passenger engagement. “While taking photos in the terminal, a gentleman traveling for business saw the button and stopped to chat with me in Mandarin,” Pan said. "It's nice to have a button that tells people I’m able to assist them in a different language. I can better connect with our passengers and help them feel comfortable as they travel through CLT."

On a crisp fall Saturday morning, October 18, 2025, the pre-dawn sky was vividly painted with orange and pink hues — the perfect backdrop for making the CLT Runway 5K a memorable, record-breaking event. [race day video.](https://youtu.be/URubxEpiGb4 "race day video"))

Not only did this year’s race sell out in under three hours, $90k was raised for the Airport’s Opportunity Scholarship Fund at Central Piedmont Community College (increasing the total to over $300K since 2019). Scholarship recipients were at the finish line to hand out medals and thank the runners.

Since its inception, 20 students have received the scholarship (15 have graduated or transferred to a 4-year institution), and ten new scholars have been welcomed into the 2025-26 cohort. 

__Running With Purpose__

The event had 1600 participants, each with unique reasons for lacing their sneakers in the early morning chill. 

Some had overcome serious health issues, some were new moms working to get back in shape, and others had special connections to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) or aviation.

“We are excited to have 13 Kimley-Horn teammates running in the race,” said Amanda Gradoville, the Carolinas Region Marketing Team Leader. “We are proud partners to CLT, providing engineering and planning consulting services, and we’ve been working on several recent CLT projects, such as the North End Around Taxiway (NEAT) and the Fourth Parallel Runway Project.”

Hannah Schwartz of Indian Land, SC, has run the 5K several years, but this time she selected an outfit with a nod to female aviator Amelia Earhart. 

“I just love it, it’s such a fun race,” said Schwartz, whose father was a private pilot and flight instructor. “Where else can you be on the runway and see these planes? I just went down and saw the 777 and being that close and looking at the size of the engines and the landing gear, it was great!”  

__CLT Gives Back__

The Runway 5K is one of many ways CLT demonstrates its support for the community as a good neighbor. It provides participants with the excitement of running on an active runway and a new perspective of the airport. Two hundred five volunteers and 36 sponsors contributed to the event's success.

Several aircraft were displayed, including an American Airlines Boeing 777, an Airbus 321, and a DaVinci Jets Beech Jet. Runners were also treated to coffee trucks, a race pre-stretch from Charlotte Yoga, vendors and entertainment.

“A friend of mine did the race a couple of years ago,” said Cesar Gonzales, a triathlete from Miami. “She had great pictures; it looked amazing. So, I had it on my calendar and signed up as soon as it opened.”

Rhett Roberts and his father, Jeff, raced in wheelchairs to raise awareness for quadriplegic athletes and adaptive sports like wheelchair rugby.

“I’m here to support my son and all the adaptive athletes out there,” said Roberts. “It’s a great group of individuals that we come across in these adaptive sports, and you know sometimes they get forgotten about, but they are tremendous people and really great athletes in their own way.”

This was non-binary runner Ab McCarthy’s first-ever Runway 5K. “I run to prove that I exist,” said McCarthy. “Running has significantly boosted my self-confidence, and it has also made me louder.”

__International Reach__

In its 18th year, the Runway 5K has grown in popularity and size. In 2007, the race had only 500 participants. This year, ten of the 1,600 runners and walkers crossing the finish line traveled over 1,000 miles, including four from abroad.

Liron Baltrusch from Germany traveled to Charlotte after hearing about it from his brother Jakob, who lives in the Queen City. “The CLT Runway 5K was my first race, since I only started running this past summer,” said Baltrusch, who is training in Germany. “When he showed me pictures and told me about the Runway 5K, I was hooked.”

Theo Buncamper came from the Caribbean island of St. Maarten after seeing the race advertised in the CLT terminal. “ I had a great time running the CLT Runway 5K,” said Buncamper. “As a pilot based in the Caribbean, it’s easily one of my favorite races! There’s something special about running down the same runway I usually fly into. I can't wait to do it again next year.”

The race also drew runners from British Columbia. Glenda and Howard Graham learned about the race from their daughter in North Carolina. “We have four grandchildren there and wanted to join them in the 5K,” said Glenda. “We are 71 and 77, married for 53 years, and love visiting North Carolina and enjoying your incredible fall colors.” 

If you missed it this year, the good news is that registration for next year’s race will open on August 1, 2026!

Runway 5K Sets New Records

The players and action seemed completely real, like a scene from a movie — but it was just a drill. The scenario involved the simulated aftermath of an aircraft emergency and mass casualties. 

Approximately 400 people participated in a [Triennial Disaster Exercise](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0MsK-m1mP4 "Triennial Disaster Exercise") at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) on October 4, 2025, to test safety, emergency readiness and regulatory compliance.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandates this exercise every three years at commercial airports nationwide. It is a routine, pre-planned event scheduled years in advance.

__Playing The Role__

The simulation players included Charlotte Fire, CMPD, Medic, American Airlines and numerous other local, state and federal partners, who all responded to the scenario in real time. CLT’s Emergency Operations Center was also activated to coordinate resources along with a Joint Information Center to field media inquiries and disseminate information, and an Executive Leadership Team Policy Group.

Volunteers portrayed “victims” and used moulage—makeup that simulates injuries and wounds—to help test first responders' triage and treatment procedures during an aircraft accident response.

“This is really like a Super Bowl for the emergency management team,” said Kevin Wu, CLT’s Director of Operations for Emergency Services. “The key is to build and strengthen our relationships with our response partners. We are trying to get an honest assessment of where we are and identify any gaps to fix them and prepare better for a real-life emergency.” 

More than 40 evaluators participated in the simulation on the airfield and in other locations, observing and assessing the overall performance. 

__Lessons Learned & Long-Term Improvements__

The Triennial Disaster Exercise is part of CLT’s broader safety commitment, which involves regular tabletop drills for various scenarios to assess preparedness and improve response plans. 

Although planning this specific exercise took nearly eight months, it concluded within a few hours. Nonetheless, the lessons learned will have a lasting impact.

“So, we really get into the weeds on a very tactical and strategic level to determine what is going on, and then we evaluate it,” said Michael Tobin, CLT Emergency Operations Manager. “We never want to rest on our laurels; it’s always an improving process. Our plans are our plans. They are basically words on paper, which is good, but we always want to exercise and do something new to improve the process intentionally and with good direction.”

Long-term safety improvements already in the works include major infrastructure projects like a fourth parallel runway (scheduled to open in fall 2027) and end-around taxiways to reduce runway crossing risks and enhance operational safety. 

Tobin added that, regarding the next Triennial Exercise, “We look forward to 2028 and making that one even bigger, better, and more challenging. We’ll start putting our thoughts on paper and see what that brings us.”

Applications opened for CLT's Aviation Academy on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Sessions begin in January 2026.

The eight-week program offers an opportunity to learn more about the Airport and its important regional role. It includes tours of the airfield and the terminal, along with presentations from CLT and its partners. Since 2017, the Aviation Academy has graduated 208 students.

“The Aviation Academy is a chance for the community to take a deep dive into what makes the airport work,” said Melissa Treadaway, CLT Community Affairs Manager. “Participants get a real behind-the-curtain look at CLT and many of our partners, as they learn what the airport’s impact on the region and its economy, and what it takes to keep one of the world’s busiest airports running smoothly.”

A familiar face has returned to the new baby grand in the Airport’s Atrium a few times a week. These days, he’s gained pop culture status and is instantly recognizable to many fans.

Almost eight months ago, 25-year-old CLT volunteer piano player and singer Josh King made his national TV debut on “American Idol.” King finished in the top eight in Hollywood after competing against thousands of would-be contestants who auditioned for Season 23 of the popular ABC show. (Mississippi’s Jamal Roberts was voted the winner.)

“Usually they say something like, ‘We voted for you!’ or ‘What are you doing back here?’ and they ask me about my experience on the show,” said King. “It’s wonderful to meet the people who watched and supported me every week.” 

King says that while passengers, flight crews and Airport workers often stop for selfies or to live stream his music, many are surprised or even disappointed to see him back in Charlotte—and he admits that it is tough to hear. 

“They believe that appearing on a TV show instantly leads to sustainable career success,” said King. “However, the reality is that achievable, sustainable success in this field is much harder than most people believe, and I am trying my best.”

__Tips Defray Studio Costs__

King has been a CLT volunteer since 2018 and is one of seven talented professional musicians who perform regularly at the Airport.

He uses his tips to help pay for studio time to create demos he can send to record labels and producers. King explains that a solo recording session lasting just a few hours can easily cost $500 or more. “And to do the music the right way (as I want it to sound), it will cost a lot more in time and money, as I will need to hire session musicians and a producer who understands the authentic vibe I am trying to achieve.” 

The musician said he stays connected with his fellow “American Idol” alumni and even performs gigs with them (schedule found at [joshkingmusic.com](https://www.joshkingmusic.com/)). He credits Idol judge Lionel Ritchie as a huge supporter during the show. “Lionel told me I need to believe in myself, write good songs, and never give up.”

Following that advice, King continues to craft his bluesy piano and harmonica melodies while keeping his “appreciation” jar on the piano.

“I dream of being a recording artist leading a full touring band for my own big stage concerts,” he added. “I’ve had that dream since I was a little kid and have worked hard all my life to achieve it. I’m never giving up on that dream.”

From Idol Stage to CLT Keys: Finalist Returns to Play

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is American Airlines' second-largest hub and functions like a small city. It has 20,000 people working on its 6,000-acre campus, and in 2024, it welcomed 58.8 million travelers. 

So, it’s no surprise that the Airport has its own Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Division, one of fourteen police divisions in the city. There are 68 full-time personnel, including officers, K9 units, detectives, command staff and 29 hired-back officers (retired CMPD officers who return to work part-time).

__Patrols and Calls for Service__

However, the Airport’s police officers don’t only patrol on foot or in vehicles. The CMPD Airport Division also has a bike patrol that travels through the terminal, covering the ticketing area, concourses, parking lots, decks and employee lots. 

Typical calls include (but are not limited to) responding to an unattended bag, an unruly passenger, a disruption at a gate or on an aircraft and any property theft, crime or disturbance. CMPD also works closely with its federal partners at the Airport. 

“We want people to feel comfortable traveling, whether for vacation or business, we want them to feel comfortable with their families in the Airport,” said CMPD Captain Matthew Horner. “So, we spread out our officers as strategically as possible.”

__Reducing Response Times__

The CLT Bike Patrol began as a pilot program in January 2024 and was fully launched in April 2024. It now has seven bike officers. The Airport uses the police bike patrols to boost visibility, deter crime and reduce response times in the busy, ever-expanding terminal. 

“As CLT continues to grow in square footage along with staff and travelers, being creative in how CLT responds to incidents is very important,” said Michael Tobin, CLT Emergency Operations Manager. “With Medic on carts and CFD (Charlotte Fire Department) on bikes as well, CLT has taken the traditional response mode and made it more effective to suit our environment…the name of the game is to be efficient and quick when working within the airport environment for not only those who work here but also the traveling public.”

Depending on the time of day, bike officers can easily ride their mountain bikes through even the Atrium. However, navigating more narrow spaces in crowded areas with travelers, carry-on luggage and other obstacles can present unique challenges.

“If it gets impassable, we can park the bikes and walk the rest of the way, but we use the bikes as a force multiplier,” said Officer Travis Pardue, a retired CMPD Lieutenant who estimates he rides at least 7-10 miles inside the terminal daily. “Especially in bigger Concourses like Concourse A, we can significantly reduce the distance and improve response time.”

The bike patrol is proving effective. CMPD statistics show that, year to date, nearly every crime category tracked at the Airport has experienced double-digit decreases from 2024 to 2025. 

“I credit that to keeping our staffing at a high level and placing our officers where they need to be,” added Capt. Horner. “It’s just another asset we have at the Airport.”

Pedal Power: Bike Patrol Enhances Airport Security


Nearly two decades in the making, the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is no longer a vision or a construction site – it’s a reality. Planning began in 2008, construction started in 2019, and this month CLT celebrates completion of what CEO Haley Gentry calls “the most ambitious, most transformative project in CLT’s history.”

“It takes hundreds of companies and thousands of people involved in planning, design, construction and management of an effort this monumental,” Gentry said. “And that doesn’t even include the millions of passengers who experienced this arduous process with us. The TLE is the signature project of Destination CLT, the Airport’s $4 billion capital investment program, which also includes concourse renovations, Concourse A and E expansions, The Plaza concessions hub and a new Fourth Parallel Runway.

__By the Numbers__

Expanding the terminal lobby of the world’s sixth-busiest airport was a feat of numbers alone:

- __$608 million project__ – largest construction contract in CLT history
- __5 million man-hours__ from about 6,000 workers
- __175,000 sq. ft. of new space__, plus 191,000 renovated sq. ft.
- __146,000 sq. ft. glass canopy__ shielding passengers curbside
- __16-lane curb front__ to ease drop-off and pick-up congestion
- __11 new art installations__, including the iconic Queen Charlotte statue

The 15-foot, 3,000-pound statue of Queen Charlotte now commands the center of the lobby, framed by natural light, skybridges and subterranean walkways that improve passenger flow.

__Benefits for Passengers__

The expansion was designed with travelers in mind:

- __Security__: Consolidated from five to three checkpoints with 21 lanes, including 11 Automated Screening Lanes that process 600 more passengers per hour.
- __Baggage Claim__: Eight high-capacity carousels improve efficiency.
- __Vertical Circulation__: New escalators and elevators speed connections between ticketing and baggage claim.
- __Check-in:__ Modernized ticket counters enhance the customer experience.

__Why It Was Needed__

When CLT’s terminal opened in 1982, the Airport served 2.7 million local passengers. By 2024, that number had climbed to 9 million — a 26% jump since 2022. Overall, CLT welcomed a record 58.8 million passengers last year.

With 157 new residents moving to Charlotte daily, the old lobby could not keep up. At peak times, checkpoints overflowed into crowded hallways. The 175,000 sq. ft. of added space relieves congestion and gives travelers more breathing room.

“The project has transformed CLT,” said Chief Operating Officer Jerome Woodard. “Gone are the days of low ceilings, dark overcrowded lobbies and checkpoints bursting at the seams. Gone are the days when operations outpaced infrastructure and passengers waited outside just to enter. Today, CLT delivers a superior facility that has dramatically elevated the travel experience.”

__The Journey__

The TLE spanned six phases over nearly two decades. Early planning began in 2008, but before expansion could start, CLT had to relocate the terminal roadway, demolish two parking decks, and move the Queen Charlotte statue.

Construction began in December 2019. Key milestones included:

__Design Highlights__

The new lobby blends modern design with Charlotte’s character. Natural light floods the open space, anchored by Queen Charlotte’s Court. Rocking chairs, benches and colorful seating invite travelers to pause.

Architectural details reflect the region and city: scalloped ceilings echo Piedmont hills, a gold ribbon nods to Charlotte’s gold rush history, and the oculus skylight symbolizes the queen’s crown. Doorframe gingham patterns recall Charlotte’s textile industry, while shades of blue honor local sports teams.

Positive feedback about the TLE has not only been nationally, but worldwide. “Other airports are very interested in what’s going on at CLT,” said Architect Ben Goebel, Senior Vice President at Gresham Smith. “We’ve even had airports overseas asking about CLT’s signage and design.”

__Challenges Along the Way__

The five-and-a-half-year build wasn’t without a few bumps along the way. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and created uncertainty about passenger volumes. Steel shortages and social distancing required schedule adjustments.

Meanwhile, local passenger traffic surged faster than forecast, reaching 40,000-plus people on peak days in 2024. Lane closures and construction walls often greeted travelers, prompting CLT’s campaign signs: “Pardon our Royal Mess. We’re Building an Airport Fit for the Queen.”

Chief Infrastructure Officer Jack Christine credits extensive preplanning for remaining on time and on budget. “We never had to stop and change direction. That preparation was the key to our success. Every project has hiccups, but the team delivered CLT’s most complex project ever.”

__What’s Next__

The TLE may be complete, but construction at CLT continues. Renovations are underway in Concourses D and E, scheduled to finish by 2027. A new Fourth Parallel Runway is planned for 2027, and Phase III of the Concourse A expansion is in design.

“People ask me, when will the construction ever be done?” Christine said. “And my answer is, ‘I hope never.’ If it is, it means we’ve stagnated — not only as an airport, but as a community.”

CLT Completes Landmark Terminal Lobby Expansion

As the dust finally settles on the newly finished Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE), one of the most challenging parts was building the 146,000-square-foot steel and glass canopy, which had to be constructed over the busy upper roadway. The CLT Executive Leadership Team was clear in its directive to the architects and engineers: this is an airport first and a construction site second, so minimize disruptions. 

“A lot of projects are like expanding a living room or adding something on your back deck –  it’s something you can live with,” explained architect Ben Goebel, the TLE project executive with Gresham Smith. “The terminal lobby project was like simultaneously remodeling your living room, bedroom and bathroom. It was not something you could escape daily … so you have to work around those parameters, and we did the best we could.”

__The Overnight Shift__

Most of the canopy work was done between September 2022 and June 2023 during the middle of the night.

The 63 twelve-foot-tall trusses fabricated offsite by Charlotte-based SteelFab, Inc. (over 18 months) were brought in at 2 a.m. Sections were hoisted with cranes (the heaviest weighing over 47,000 pounds), then bolted and welded into place before the roadway reopened at 5 a.m. 

The Airport project was so large (combined with COVID-related supply chain issues) that it led to a local steel shortage. The overnight work also meant traffic into the terminal had to be rerouted while lanes were closed.

“The most significant challenges came when there was an outside factor that exacerbated the impact caused by construction,” said Jerome Woodard, CLT Chief Operations Officer. “Think a vehicle accident on the roadway, or what was more common, was inclement weather that either delayed, canceled or directly impacted the construction team’s ability to complete the nightly work. These situations caused operations to proactively coordinate nightly ‘go or no go’ decisions to close the roadway to facilitate the construction.”

__Design Reflects Charlotte Region__

The swooping canopy—with a free span of nearly 160 feet—also contains 2,462 panes of glass. It’s designed to symbolically extend Queen Charlotte’s Coronation Cape and guide the eye through the glass windows back to her statue in the lobby. 

Once inside the terminal, travelers will notice design elements and color choices that reflect:

- Textiles (such as blue gingham patterns over the entrance and exit portals).
- Sports community (various shades of blue). 
- Banking and mining (gold accents that nod to Charlotte’s financial and gold rush history).
- Aerodynamics and racing (ribbon walls and wayfinding).
- Agricultural landscape of the Piedmont (the ceiling pattern mimics rows of crops).

__Passengers React__

Predictably, the transformational Terminal Lobby Expansion—which took nearly ten years and cost $608 million—both amazed and frustrated travelers who patiently dealt with the construction and dust necessary to create “An Airport Fit For A Queen.”

“Charlotte is definitely a large city, so I feel like our airport now kind of matches that expectation,” said Charlottean Brittany Alston, who flew into CLT from Miami.

“It’s much more spacious and makes Charlotte look really good,” added passenger Amy Neaves, who arrived from Paris and is headed home to Hickory. “I remember when this was all boarded up, and you came down to ground transport or to get baggage, and it looked like a war zone for a good while. And I know it took a long time, but is it worth it? Yes, absolutely!”

“It’s a massive improvement over when construction was underway, but it feels like everything is moving really smoothly,” said fellow traveler Daniel Moore. “Going through Customs was quick and easy. It feels more spacious out front, too; there’s better flow all around.”

__Moving Forward__

In addition to the canopy, the TLE project relocated the Queen Charlotte statue indoors, expanded the ticketing area, added larger checkpoints and automated exit lanes, more baggage carousels, built subterranean walkways, widened the roadways and added extra concessions and art installations.

“I hope our local customers are happy with the final product and proud of the airport,” said Jack Christine, CLT Chief Infrastructure and Development Officer. “The different upgrades we have made from a technology perspective, and a space standpoint, make their journey easier and more efficient, and make the travel experience less challenging. And yes, it’s not always going to be perfect, but if we had the lobby that we had back in 2019, it would be miserable and not fun at all.”

Now that the TLE has wrapped up, renovations continue in Concourses D and E, and new projects are already on the horizon, including a new Fourth Parallel Runway scheduled to open in Fall 2027.

Shaping CLT’s Curbside Canopy 


It’s become THE iconic airport “photo op spot”—a beautifully framed cityscape, created by careful design and a touch of luck! 

If you're seeking a breathtaking view of the Queen City—especially at sunrise—look no further than the West and East pedestrian skybridges at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Since opening in July 2024, the two overhead walkways connecting the Hourly Deck/Rental Car Facility to the terminal lobby have become known for providing some of the best unobstructed views in town.

__Taking in the View__

“So far, I’ve only been here a total of three times,” said Justin Morales, whose family took a picture as they headed back to their car. “But I think it’s a beautiful skyline, especially at night and when it’s clear, it is really pretty.”

Passengers, media, professional photographers, and others often stop to take photos of aircraft and capture Instagram-worthy shots of Uptown Charlotte. One such person is frequent flier and North Carolina native Jeff Sykes.

“I’ve been in a lot of airports, and CLT’s come a long way,” said Sykes as he took a cell phone photo. “I have shown this picture right here to quite a few people. I think it’s pretty cool how the tails of the planes line up with the city.”

__Framing Success, One Photo at a Time__

The skybridges—each approximately 152 feet long and 18 feet wide—were designed to offer safety and functionality so customers would not have to cross an active roadway with eight lanes of traffic. However, they’ve also become a “stop and pause moment” on a journey into the busy terminal.

“With the existing orientation of the building, we were very lucky. We said, ‘let’s frame the Queen City itself,’ and what a better backdrop,” said architect Ben Goebel, the Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project executive with Gresham Smith. He is excited by how people have responded favorably to the walkways and the 146,000-square-foot glass canopy overhead. Goebel says the design draws inspiration from Charlotte's history and character, including the city’s signature summertime afternoon showers.

“We wanted to ensure we were protecting passengers and the public from the elements as they are loading and unloading the car,” said Goebel. “This is supposed to be the best first and last impression of the city and the last thing we want them to do is get on an airplane soaking wet. It allowed the natural light to come in and really gives a nice warm feeling.”

Labor Day is often the last hurrah for many before summer travel season ends and preparation for sweater weather begins. This holiday weekend, Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is expecting more than 856,000 passengers Thursday, Aug. 28, through Tuesday, Sept. 2. That’s an 6.6% decrease compared to last year, but consistent with 2023 numbers. 

Approximately 204,000 passengers will pass through TSA security checkpoints at CLT during that timeframe, which is just 2.4% below last year’s record-high, but almost 14% above 2023. 

__Don’t Wing It – Prepare to Fly__ 

With the increased traffic, passengers are encouraged to follow these tips to help ensure a smooth travel experience.

•	Be inside the terminal at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight.

•	Plan to reach your parking space thirty minutes before your desired arrival time at the terminal.

__Recent Airport Changes__

If you haven’t flown out of CLT in a few months, be aware of these recent changes. 

•	Checkpoint 2 became fully operational on March 26 and is the brand-new Primary TSA Pre-Check location. An estimated 204,000 passengers will undergo screening at CLT’s security checkpoints this holiday weekend. 

•	The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) no longer requires travelers to remove their shoes during the standard screening process, ending a nearly two-decade-old policy at all domestic airports.

•	TSA has partnered with CLT to launch a new program called “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease,” which offers expedited access for the U.S. Military at CLT’s TSA PreCheck (at Checkpoint 2). It includes front-of-the-line TSA screening. Service members must show a valid military ID. (Co-travelers can accompany them to the front of the checkpoint.)

•	TSA also offers two dedicated family lanes at Checkpoint 1 for those traveling with children 12 and under, as part of its “Families on the Fly” campaign.

•	REAL ID enforcement began for domestic air travel on May 7. Without one, you could face delays and enhanced screening at TSA checkpoints. If you do not have a REAL ID, check out a list of other [acceptable IDs](https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification "acceptable IDs"), such as a U.S. passport. 

•	When exiting the terminal’s secured area (areas beyond the TSA checkpoints) to enter Ticketing or Baggage Claim, passengers now have more options. Three new exit lanes have opened: Exit Lane 2 (near Chick-fil-A), Exit Lane 3 (near Jersey Mike’s) and Exit Lane 4 (located in the D/E Connector). Exit Lane 1 (west of Checkpoint 1) will open in early September.

•	Uber and Lyft ride-share services have relocated from the lower-level Arrivals/Baggage Claim area to the inner lane of the upper-level Departures/Ticketing area for both drop-offs and pick-ups.

__Construction Projects to Note:__

To the delight of many (CLT especially), the Terminal Lobby Expansion is scheduled for completion in September. The project adds 175,000 square feet of new space and 191,000 square feet of renovated space to the terminal lobby. 

Renovations are underway on Concourses D and E. Both are receiving new terrazzo flooring, ceiling tiles, light fixtures, signage, HVAC units, powered gate seating, fresh paint and updated restrooms. Concourse D upgrades will wrap up in 2026, and Concourse E will finish in early 2027.

__Provisions by Admirals Club Lounge__

American Airlines recently opened Provisions by Admirals Club℠ lounge on Concourse A (next to Gate A1). According to American, the space is “tailored to meet the needs of today’s traveler, offering quick access to personalized service and fresh food and beverage options, all within an intuitive, efficient layout.”

__Flights Arriving Soon__

While planning upcoming trips for this year and 2026, here are a few more destinations to book. 

American Airlines begins 10-day service to Albuquerque, N.M. (Oct. 3 – 13) for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The airline also will offer the following routes: Vail, Colo. (Dec. 18 – Jan. 5), Aspen, Colo. (Dec. 19 – March), Palm Springs, Calif. (Dec. 20 – April, Saturdays only) and Green Bay, Wis. (Nov. 2) for Panthers/Packers football game. 

Frontier Airlines recently announced three-weekly flights to Fort Lauderdale starting Nov. 21 and twice-weekly service to Detroit launching Nov. 23. 

Flights to Abu Dhabi begin next year by Etihad Airways on May 4.
